Melinda, you are one of my heroes. I have been watching and rooting for you since day 1, and am thrilled to see the success you're creating. You are the one person I think I relate to the most in our field. I am still in-house + moonlighting, trying to figure out how to transition to freelance full-time and offering more strategy, and between watching your own self-discovery and Chris' amazing coaching, I walk away from this video with some clear actionable steps to start making progress in my pivot. The exact question I have been wresting with lately is how to attract my ideal client (and how to figure out who the heck that is), so this video is right on time, per usual. If you had a UA-cam channel I would expect that I'd consume your content as religiously as I do @thefutur. I will become much more familiar with your website, and if there's a better place to glean your wisdom let me know. Thank you for your courage and commitment to your journey, you are an astounding inspiration. I would also like to say thank you to Chris and The Futur crew. This reflection on Melinda's impact stands as a testament to your educational framework.
Wow, thank you Gabriel. So kind of you. I do post videos on UA-cam once in a blue moon, but I consistently write a weekly email that goes through all my thoughts, learnings, and progress. If you're interested, here's the link to sign up for it: bit.ly/melindalivsey I can't thank you enough for your kind words and encouragement. It keeps me going!
Loved this episode >> It deserves so much more and it resonated so much deeper than what a comment like "loved this episode" actually yields, but as I am still in the process of figuring out what it means for me, brain resources for articulating a meaningful and well structured comment are limited. Despite this and my intolerance for comments that aren't thoughtful nor add value to a convo, the fact that I felt the urge to leave a brain fart anyway, should speak to the profound effect it had. I can definitely say that something shifted for me within. 🙌🏻
@@melindalivsey1 love watching your progress. Between you and me (and whoever sees this) maybe it would help if you looked at making videos like you'd be making it for your kid or kids. Even if you don't have any i truly feel its a cool way to teach because if you can teach any subject to a six year old, you know the subject well :). I hope that helps build your courage to share your message morw. Good luck! Let me know if this helped or not.
I love what Chris said at the end about how people falsely believe that working with a big-name client or on a high-visibility project will bring fulfillment. Fix the inside and you fix the outside, love it.
OMG... Thank you guys, I've almost got it wrong by repositioning my business because of what I discovered from Fabian. Because he writes to target the decision makers, I also started doing the something similar. Now Chris is like "Unless you're an awesome write and someone who goes on TED, The people who makes the decisions have little or no time to find you. So there's a big chance that the creatives under them would be the ones to recommend you if you produce quality contents." Now I get a clearer picture of what I'm supposed to do. Thank you guys!!! ❤️
This series is so enjoyable. Hearing your comment about "I'm now creating art" (The Futur) is so true. Blind and client work isn't art, it is a service and solving a problem. These videos and this content and your insight shared with the masses is art. Love it 👌
If the entire Futur channel was just you and Melinda talking I'd be a happy man! Also that bamboo seed analogy was fantastic, you really are a man of great analogies Chris.
That phrase, “those who can’t do, teach” is absolutely antiquated. It’s from a different time. Today is, “those who can do, do it all” which in a way, is worse. We’re required to lift everything because we have access to the tools to do it. Daunting is the reality of the modern creative upstart.
The part about not getting stuck on a plan before daring to try something new was such good timing. I've been procrastinating my plans for so long, because of what Melinda said: not knowing where to start, what the first step should be, also not being sure if it would succeed, I'm even afraid people will think I'm crazy. I always thought I need solid plans and checklists to follow. So thank you so much Chris, for the insight to have a direction and get started, try it, get feedback and adapt :) This insight is finally setting me in motion!
I’m digging the blue and orange light. Over thinking things in business can be a momentum killer. It’s important to learn, do and repeat. That’s the approach I’m taking. I’m in the very early stages of growing my business but I’m excited for the process not just the results.
I just realized why I like listening to Chris so much, he's direct in a disarming way but also nurturing and empathetic. Reminds me of the best teacher I've ever had :D
As a new (1.5 years of exp) web developer and as somebody teaching themselves Illustrator/Photoshop/After Effects to get into the graphic design/branding/identity field, these videos are incredible and I thank you both for continuing to share your journeys and your advice/growth. I have come a long way since making this career change, and I am more excited than ever to see where things can go, and I appreciate that you give back in the form of your knowledge and your time. It is an incredibly generous thing to do (even if it helps your metrics :P )
The last part about plans was gold. I used to think that you need to have a great plan to be able to move forward. No plan, no progress. But I love the idea of progress or plans. I'm embracing it right now because I'm pivoting to becoming a brand strategist and my thoughts are all about what I need to do, what do I need to have, who I need to be connected to, etc. It reaches a point where it's overwhelming and the classic Analysis Paralysis happens.
Solopreneur here and what you do is very helpful and mindblowing. I searched for channels about branding that's NOT about design because branding is way bigger than design. This was the channel that seemed to kind of fit. Now I'm happy I subscribed because the info is getting more and more valuble to me.

So in the novel writing universe, authors are usually grouped into two types. Plotters and Pantsers. Pantsers are those who sit down without a plan or a plot in mind. They just have an idea and they start writing, flying by the seat of their pants, waiting to see how they are surprised along the way. Plotters are those who map out every detail ahead of time. Every event, every decision or turning point from beginning to end. They have a formula and they sit down to write the words that will flesh out that formula. Neither of these is technically better than the other. There are successful authors from both camps. However, there is also a middle ground. Sometimes called the Plantser. Someone who sits down to write with a rough plan, an ending in mind, maybe a few major steps along the way, but with plenty of room to make major shifts as new ideas and inspirations come out of the act of writing. That is my favorite way to go about writing, and, really, life. I set out with an end goal in mind, and an idea of some of the things that I think need to happen along the way, and then pivot as needed, maybe even go back to the beginning and rewrite or edit, because the end should always reflect the beginning :D PS - so nice to see Melinda back on the Futur. I would say the reason I like to watch vids with Melinda is that she is highly relatable. She comes from the logo design space and I do web design, and she is further along the branding path than me, but other than that I feel like I could be looking in a mirror. She often says the same things I am thinking and seems to have the same doubts and aspirations.
i guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my password. I love any tips you can offer me
This is so by far the best episode I've watched on the futur...it's like the content keeps getting better and better....Thanks Chris for sharing.. I totally saw myself in all you said... Thanks Melinda for being so open and relatable... can't wait for the next one
This is going to take another viewing for everything to sink in... maybe a couple more. So deep and rich in the information I want/need to make sure I understand it and can implement it into my situation! Thanks, Chris and theFutur!
At around 38:00 your "most controversial comment" you put your finger on a struggle I've had for decades - graphic design or art or art in my graphic design - and I too, cannot, or will not, escape being an artist and at that level, you are correct - the work for clients seems trivial. I have never had one client's work consume me for ten or twelve years, but the work I do because I love it - has consumed me for more than two decades. Congratulations on acknowledging you are an artist! I listened to this "comment" three times. Great advice for Melinda.
Chris you have so much wisdom and I’m grateful for you creating this space! This is my 2nd year full time and you are continually the voice that makes me think more high level. And Melinda, you are goals! I am finally transitioning into brand strategy and just so thankful for you sharing your journey!
This was probably my most favorite episode ever!!! Chris made me cry--I was touched by his words, seriously deeply moved and could relate to it all, every single word. Thank you, thank you for sharing such heartfelt, honest, and thoughtful wisdom! Watching again--so many good notes! P.S. Loved the orange light and I too see Melinda an innovator! Woohoo! :)
I love how deep you guys go into what truly drives us... funny enough I was watching Tony Robbins right before this and thought just before you mentioned him....hey I recognise this! :D I think so many people get caught up in what they're 'supposed to do' as designers... and its one of the many reasons I didn't enjoy graphic design at Uni... I finally have a better understanding of what drives me! and I can't thank you guys enough for the valuable content you share... I truly believe one day you will change the way design is taught.
Chris you're right when you speak about having very little competition in the realm you occupy on UA-cam because no one comes close to giving this much value. Feel like I'm getting a university education and a business mentor with The Futur. **10/10 Content** - - - > You can trade this coupon for a free drink from the bar when I'm next in town
Diggin the lighting, kudos to the production team. Maybe the lights can change depending on the topic (or guest), just a thought. This channel is a gold mine.
Hello Mr. Chris.... Its inspiring to listen to you.....i just find that you speak all that I believe or analyse in understanding life. you talk similar to Sadguru.... whom I listen to understand what life is all about.....I understand emotions, connections, vibes.... but never found anyone who speaks this for a business....usually, people say to keep aside your emotions and be practical.....no one answer this... why not to be practical with emotions..... Thank you for taking initiative in forming THE FUTUR
Hey Chris & the Futur team! I’ve been binge watching this channel for a while. And watching this video has my mind spinning! I really resonate with what Chris said about how human mind is meant to do more than just providing a service. And for a long time I’ve been battling this out and telling people that I wanna do more. I’m a photographer, and I love telling stories to help people see different perspectives. And I’ve been trying to do that through my social media and now I have a website and I’m trynna grow that space. I wanna document stories that matter. I wanna change the world. I wanna tell stories that uplift the unheard and bring justice to the environment and to socially oppressed communities. I’ve been stuck in this trynna-make-money-to-survive cycle for so long. And I finally decided that I’ll earn money through my natural skill and experience, ie, social media marketing. And I started watching this channel so I can up my communication game with clients. I was in a bad state for this whole month because I felt like I’m leaving my dream/passion behind. I wanna do more. Rise above. Tell stories. But I need money to survive, help my parents out, and travel to document those stories however small. How do I balance the two? How should I divide my time? I was thinking getting my smm business up and running which I can then convert into an agency so it practically runs itself in some way which leaves me time to do the things I want to. Am I thinking in the right direction? On the other hand I feel I’m putting my passion for later. And that later may never come. I’m so scared I’m gonna fail and die without doing these things. Idk if you’ll ever see this. But I’m grateful I get to learn from you. You’ve helped me so much. I’m so so so thankful.
Wow, Chris and Melinda. I really can't believe how you guys enter our mind and read it. I have been feeling like hitting the roof with the sort of work I am doing and the earnings. Although I am a full-time freelancer for the last 4-5 years, @Melinda I really want to join you on your journey and learn a lot from you. I have been watching and following Chris (he is the master) videos for over a year now but following your footsteps will be amazing too I am sure. When you are starting coaching? :)
43:00 Not everyone wants to be an artist. There are people who genuinely enjoy gardening, raising animals, fixing equipment, building vehicles, architectural construction, cooking, etc. There are also people who don't have a specific money-making talent along those lines. The things they enjoy are purely recreational (like watching TV or playing basketball with their friends) and they don't mind doing manual labor (namely b/c it pays and they can). So, theoretically, at least, I think that everyone could pursue their preferred skillsets and, once upon a time, those skills would have been traded, either in terms of labor or in terms of the finished product. For instance, as Chris says in another video, a fisherman might trade fish for a woven basket. Likewise, a person who repairs a building might trade labor with someone who makes soaps. A person who farms might trade produce (or labor) with someone who bakes. I think there will always be people who enjoy physical labor, in one form or another, and some of them are also creatives.
This is probably my second comment on a video on youtube, I'm mostly the quiet observer who just sucks in the knowledge and leaves, but I just had to share my impressions. It's not particularly this video that inspired me, but all I've seen so far. Maybe inspire is not even the right word, I'd say resonate, teach or felt like a designer's fuel. So, as I am watching your videos, I'm thinking I have to meet Chris someday and learn a little in person. I live in Macedonia( you have fans even there! ), but I'm super curious ad ambitious, so if you ever, ever have any international internships in your company, I'd totally apply constantly. So, please spam away if something comes up!
The part when Chris uncovered that Melinda isn't "living up to her potential" or doing what she loves hit me hard. I happened to be in the same predicament I started a business to help finance my pursuit of what I really love to do and got lost in building a successful business that I haven't delivered enough time and energy into what I love and this made me feel so disappointed with myself. Even though now I'm aware I am terrified to stop the business that I've been running for 6 years to pursue my dreams because I don't have the capital to do so.
The Futur's content is so on point with where i am right now - it's like they're reading my mind! Now I have to find a way to apply it before the robots get me!!!
Side-note: I have heard a psychologist 6 years ago talking about leading in the everyday-basis. He said we all want to lead, to tell what to do, but not all of us can do that. Due to his words: look at the Roman Army back in the days. Or any army nowadays. They have thousands of people and only one Cesar. Due to his words people want to be leaders instead of being the best soldiers of the world an successful on their ground. / EXCEPT YOU TRULY BELIVE IN THE WORDS: WHETHER YOU THINK YOU CAN OR CAN NOT, YOU ARE RIGHT. - Then welcome to the Dojo :D / And I must to admit this is due to the words of a psychologist, and they can be ignored... Anyway, I understand both of your points but seeing a Grand Canyon between the personalities. It is great and entertaining that Chris pushes Melinda to the way and path of a "leader", but be careful please! :) We need her back! :) "Nobody told me it’s impossible, so I did it."
My god Chris ! I felt that your weren’t just talking to Melinda but you were talking to me as well! Because I too want to do something greater where I can help people, not just talking orders. It makes me happy knowing that I truly have helped shape someone’s life for the better, which I believe is what I’m meant to do. Right now, I am struggling to figure out what my first step is to getting to where I want to go. Lol am I the next Melinda? 😆😉
There was a lot I agree with here, but one thing I didn’t: every person has a different thing that fulfills them. Whether that is brand consulting or teaching others how to do that. Another example: having a family may fulfill one person where it drains another. Now, I’m with Chris here what he is doing resonates with me and my goals. However, I can see if it may not with Melinda. Everyone has a different fulfillment level and calling. Tony Robbins speaks about this.
hi wolf. all I can do is share what I know. Melinda will find what works for her. but that doesn't mean we shouldn't question our own BS (Belief System) form time to time. so many of us take what we believe as the only way to do something. I'm here to shake it up.
The Futur ooo yea I whole heartedly agree, question everything. It is a way to make things stick and find what works for “Me”. That is why I the young Jedi needed to question you Yoda on if you were being empathetic to her wants or if you were shadowing your own onto her? Bottom line, love what you you do, and no doubt you got Melinda thinking about it also. Now did I get you thinking too?
At first I thought that Chris didn't understand that she's a different person from him and may want different things and he thinks everybody would want what he wants but then he did mention how he wants to change the conversations we have with ourselves recognizing she does have a conversation with herself that is different than his but that's what he's trying to change.
Great session (as always). I especially like the part about having direction and momentum instead of very detailed planning. Somehow I feel lighter now :)
this is probably the only time I have different pov on this, trying to use the wants and pains of creatives and designers to attract clients, is going to dilute your message. I'm not saying its not a good thing that other creatives are attracted by your brand and dig your content but you have to do a balancing act here. You need to understand exactly what that part your clients, think, meaning ask them what was the most single biggest challenge they have, or what was the impact you had on them, use your facilitation skills to go in and mine for insights of what your clients think of you. Extract the info and then start writing content off of this direct data. The best data is the one directly from your clients everything else is second. another thing content marketing is a long game if you're not constantly calling up doing outreach forget about a client finding you based on only your work, especially if you work b2b. this is for people who think that purely content marketing or SEO is going to bring in clients, its always, always a supplement to your direct outreach strategy as for the other things as disruption, i agree its not a buzzword anymore its becoming a reality , but your right not yet , so you have to take action no matter how the market works, that is the definition of adapting and pivoting, when you dont have all the info you need yet you start anyway good vid though
I always appreciate your thoughts, Mario. It all depends on what one's own goal is and what "art" they want to make. If I purely wanted to bring in clients, then your route is definitely the way to go. But I'm looking to grow into making and creating things that bring me joy, with money, clients, and projects as a byproduct.
I feel so sad but proud of myself at the same time. I'm starting teaching Spanish and I got my first student and then she said she really liked my job but my fee was a little high...then I recommended her a teacher with a lower rate since she's traveling to Mexico next month and needs to practice. Anyway, I'm young and still figuring out how to put my life together. *Cries a little bit.
Soo according to Melinda it is ok to , Do some initial free workshop with clients for expirience and exposure! I just offered to do some free work and I was feeling bad about myself.
More knowledge than we ever deserved. Wonderful pointers Love the lighting setup, however Chris we need some extra soft light on you, you're almost hiding! Feels like you were luring Melinda to the Dark Side. V

Thanks Ingrid!
Great advice for Melinda.
thanks Howard.
Chris you have so much wisdom and I’m grateful for you creating this space! This is my 2nd year full time and you are continually the voice that makes me think more high level. And Melinda, you are goals! I am finally transitioning into brand strategy and just so thankful for you sharing your journey!
Thank you
Such deep insights. And Melinda has such beautiful eyes!
One more helpful podcast from The Futur! Thanks guys! Btw, I love the cinematic warm/cold lighting with a black room, it rocks, keep on!
Thanks for watching, Denni!
Woohoo! :)
thanks for sharing Donaji. didn't mean to make you cry.
Thank you!!!
This is gold! I will be watching this over and over.
The information Chris gives out for free is priceless
True, My Lama Guru Always Told me YOU WILL FIND WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR.
Why is it that Chris has a way of reinventing my mind every time 😫
Hehe
Lighting is great, teal and orange! 👌🏻 Melinda you can do it, just keep being you
Thank you!
Creating Community (giving it away) vs dated templates of competitiveness - good school of thought.
I want more of that! Would love to hear more of how to keep doing what you love and believe in and how to serve it to the community to inspire others.
I love this Melinda journey episodes
I watch one episode each day cus of how relatable they are
Thank you
Oh yes another Chris Do and Melinda design of business session!!
:D
Melinda Livsey thanks for the love. Following you goes all over social media, and finding the content helpful ~ Jason
Thanks for this guys! I love this discussion and coaching. All the Best Melinda!
Chris you're right when you speak about having very little competition in the realm you occupy on UA-cam because no one comes close to giving this much value. Feel like I'm getting a university education and a business mentor with The Futur. **10/10 Content** - - - > You can trade this coupon for a free drink from the bar when I'm next in town
sounds good.
Bravo Chris, thank you once again for your advice.
Diggin the lighting, kudos to the production team. Maybe the lights can change depending on the topic (or guest), just a thought. This channel is a gold mine.
We plan on doing this.
Hello Mr.
Thank you. High compliments.
What happened?
Awesome !!!! love this episode... very deep and so mind blowing... Thank you Chris
Hi Manish! I do send out a weekly email of my progress. You can follow along at bit.ly/melindalivsey and I actually do offer coaching too. :)
Simply Gold guys! Continue to change the game.
Thanks Chris
Great video...loving the lighting 😉
Let there be Light ... Love the lighting on Mr Do the color of the futur!
Wow Chris' last words were just mind blowing! To fix your inner part - wow!
appreciate it.
I think there will always be people who enjoy physical labor, in one form or another, and some of them are also creatives.
the blue and orange was the first thing I noticed. i dig it.
That orange blue-greenish lighting looks damn good.
Melinda was going to the classic “if everybody is an entrepreneur, who is going to be the employee?”. Classic 60-70s parents question 😂
Haha yeahhh
The part when Chris uncovered that Melinda isn't "living up to her potential" or doing what she loves hit me hard. I happened to be in the same predicament I started a business to help finance my pursuit of what I really love to do and got lost in building a successful business that I haven't delivered enough time and energy into what I love and this made me feel so disappointed with myself. Even though now I'm aware I am terrified to stop the business that I've been running for 6 years to pursue my dreams because I don't have the capital to do so.
So proud of everything you’ve accomplished! Nothing but up from here 😉
The Futur's content is so on point with where i am right now - it's like they're reading my mind!
Now I have to find a way to apply it before the robots get me!!!
watch out for them robots!
I love the lighting on this one.
Thank you for the Bamboo seeds metaphor🌻
Side-note:
I have heard a psychologist 6 years ago talking about leading in the everyday-basis.
"Nobody told me it’s impossible, so I did it."
This advice 45:00 after is literally what’s starting to happen right now.
you're my design and business corner of youtube
thank you guys :)
Thank you.
I love the blade runner light experiment! Looks so good. Thanks for this wonderful episode.
Thank you Zuni. Did you get your core update?
I like looking through these comments and seeing everyone's cool logos. Makes me realize mine needs to be updated.
Blue and orange light ftw!
Go for it Lisa! Hope so.
Love the light setup in your studio Chris
Thank you.
Chris Do, the artist.
Haha. Right?
Loving this Melinda :) considering taking my business in the same strategy direction
Its almost hard to look at Melindas screen after seeing Chris great cine lightning lol, cant wait to see this ep.
Haha quite a stark difference.
Yeah that's true.
hi wolf. all I can do is share what I know.
The best data is the one directly from your clients everything else is second.
another thing content marketing is a long game if you're not constantly calling up doing outreach forget about a client finding you based on only your work, especially if you work b2b. this is for people who think that purely content marketing or SEO is going to bring in clients, its always, always a supplement to your direct outreach strategy
as for the other things as disruption, i agree its not a buzzword anymore its becoming a reality , but your right not yet , so you have to take action no matter how the market works, that is the definition of adapting and pivoting, when you dont have all the info you need yet you start anyway
good vid though
I always appreciate your thoughts, Mario. It all depends on what one's own goal is and what "art" they want to make. If I purely wanted to bring in clients, then your route is definitely the way to go. But I'm looking to grow into making and creating things that bring me joy, with money, clients, and projects as a byproduct.
@@melindalivsey1 right this from my experiences, i think your past the point of clients being your only goal, but you still need to keep them in mind
The lighting is on point!
Chris got some epic lighting going on!
About the workshop, really great idea. Thank you. How to search for the clients?
So much truth to this. seriously.
Chris looking dope as hell with that lighting!
This. was. fabulous. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!

I just offered to do some free work and I was feeling bad about myself.
And again, Gold.
Killer cinematic lighting :)
Thank you
BRILLIANT VID!
More knowledge than we ever deserved. Wonderful pointers
Love the lighting setup, however Chris we need some extra soft light on you, you're almost hiding! Feels like you were luring Melinda to the Dark Side.
V
Haha. I am.
Lol he totally is!
(Vader voice) _You don't know the profitability of the Dark side of the Force._
Can you guys start using sound leveling? I currently have to choose between not hearing Chris or bleeding ears. My ears will be very grateful!
Sorry
