No, from what we know now, it's going to be closer to 1:33:1. It's going to look like 4:3 on your TV. Like when you watch something older that was made for the old box set CRT TVs.

The dark knight trilogy blu-eat set has the the full IMAX image scenes for the two films on a separate disc and it is great to see the full scope of what was shot. It is pillar boxed to preserve the scope of the photography and seeing the jokers shows the whole scene is so neat in that iconic opening scene from the dark knight. IMAX is such a waisted experience on today’s physical formats. The image is never shown fully on any imax movie since the amount of image is so vast in the change of aspect ratio; it is interesting that in the dark knights case you loose so much image in the way it is used in the movie that seeing the full IMAX scenes uncut as they presented them as the feature is mind blowing at how more impactful they are as unedited to fit with the aspect ratio changes.

Thank you for clarifing this subject for all of us movie lovers. I've seen old great movies brought to tv totally destroy the story line thru changing the aspect ratio and cropping. It's like colourizing, a terrible fate.
Okay, this DOES make me feel better. While I prefer the 2:40 aspect ratio because I love widescreen, 1:66:1 DID look a lot better with less side bars than the 1:43 that I expected.
For Infinity War and Endgame the directors were asked why the movie wasn't home released in IMAX aspect ratio and they said it had to do with IMAX themselves. They didn't want to release it like that for home release. There's a whole lot of technical, financial and logistical reasons. Also I think IMAX was asking what Disney probably wasn't willing to pay for, for IMAX release. I'm not sure. It's complicated and not very well known. A lot of the information is speculative since not much was confirmed. It seems the directors themselves don't know all the reasons. I'm just happy I got to see it in an IMAX theatre. An unforgettable experience.
I hope the DVD is in 1.33:1 like the trailers so we can get the full aspect ratio when played on a CRT. I still use a CRT for retro games and older movies not on Blu-ray or Digital HD. Also, I want an option between the coloured and black-and-white versions as rumoured. But an isolated score audio mix which has no dialogue and sound effects but only has Junkie XL’s score would be great. All this put together would make the Snyder Cut the biggest, most epic black-and-white, 4:3 old-timey silent film of all time, even if it’s far from being the longest silent film (1928’s Greed was originally 8 hours long before getting trimmed down to a quarter of that, and the remaining six hours are now lost media).

Screw the people who hate the 4:3 aspect ratio for _ZSJL!_ I mean, I get it. 2.39:1 and 1.85:1 are what many associate with cinema and many think 4:3 is just cropping in on the image via pan & scan for a movie was finished in widescreen. But when I found out that in _ZSJL_ wasn't pan & scanned and that what we were seeing *_IS_* the whole image, I was blown away by how good it made the movie look. It gave it this bizarre yet bold sense of scale. And I tried cropping it to 1.85:1 and 2.39:1 as an experiment and it just didn't feel the same and I didn't like it.
Ooooohhh That explains a lot...I was afraid the cropping on my TV would be atrocious, but this has calmed me down. But the moment you put the screenshot on the 2.40 aspect...WOW. In my opinion, Snyder should have kept the ultra wide aspect ratio he used in BvS. Those black bars on top and bottom are synonymous with epic scale movie experiences in my book.
I think it's something you'd get used to after a few minutes. However, if it really bothers some people I'd recommend just doing a custom picture size on your TV. Increase the width and height the same percentage until the sides are at the edge of your TV and the picture fills up the entire screen. The picture will be cropped on the top and bottom making it basically a 1:85:1 aspect ratio. You may lose a fraction of quality but on a 4K TV you probably wouldn't even notice it. I tried it with the trailer and it still looks really good and you don't lose any crucial parts of the picture at the 1:85:1 aspect ratio. I'll watch it for the first time as Zack intended and then my try doing a custom size to 1:85:1 to see if I like it more or less.
Yeah I think I'll do the same. Watch it first how Snyder intended it. Second time I'll use the zoom function on my TV. Just hope not too much is cropped out. When I played the trailer darkseids head was cropped out a bit.

Honestly feel that it is a baffling decision that he decided to release the movie with this AR especially for an epic superhero movie. Really good video. Good to see someone sharing the correct kind of info about this stuff in relation to such a high profile movie. One thing I would say is that it would've been even better to use animated transitions between the ratio shifts, just to make it really clear for people who still aren't grasping the point. That way it would be very clear that the left and right isn't being cropped at all, only the top and bottom. But regardless, great video.
Dave Hogan I watched it last night, would have liked it better if it was in widescreen. This is like going from fiber optic internet to dial up service.....just because someone prefers slow internet.....Zach needs to get over himself and release a widescreen version too
Having now watched the film in his 4:3 ratio, i must say that it looks awful. Just what I want from my 4 hour blockbuster superhero movies...... to look like a tv show from 1985. All the black edges (almost HALF of my screen) look great on my widescreen tv. SMH!!! What an idiot!!! Another reason Marvel films are leaps and bounds ahead of DC. Maybe "The Batman" can get it right.
the problem is TV manufacturers settled on a compromise between 4:3 and 21:9 and came up with 16:9. Instead of going straight to 21:9. Had they gone to 21:9 then we'd not have these aspect ratio issues such as black bars top and bottom of the TV.. We'd see the full frame of the image on the TV.
i don't know much about aspect ratio shit, but in some scene in a cinema aspect ratio movie its more wider in left and right than HDTV or 1.33 aspect ratio, so why dont zynder shot the entire footage with more further or wider ? and edited with HDTV, imax, cinema or common aspect ratio ?
I’ll take the unpopular opinion, and while this 1.33 aspect ratio would look amazing in an IMAX or any theater in general, you get the tall big image. However, while we do get more image info, as our TVs are horizontal the black bars at the left and right will be considerable, and while the image will have more info up and down, it won’t look taller on a TV. It’ll look box’d up and it might feel like you’re missing info on the sides (specially on smaller tv screens). I will watch this first with the 1.33 ratio but it would be great imo if they have an option to switch between 1.33 to 1.66 or even 1.78

YourMovieFix indeed it is. It wasn’t really advertised that much and that is the only release that contains the films in that AR. I encourage you to search on UA-cam and you can find some scenes from that version.
There's tons of reason to not film it in widescreen. Tight aspect ratios like 1.37:1 can convey certain emotions, claustrophobia, display the action in different ways, etc. It's a tool like any other aspect ratio.

Aspect ratios can also be used as a narrative tool. For The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson used three aspect ratios to denote which timeline we were in: 1.37:1 for the 30's, 2.39:1 for the 60's, and 1.85:1 for the 80's. Like I said above, aspect ratios are a tool and while Snyder had the ability to shoot in 16:9, he didn't want to and he doesn't need to. Movies, for the most part, aren't made with your TV in mind. They're made for the cinema.

Well the trailers have been 1.33. So its a bit confusing as IMAX tends to play at 1.43. So the final version that we all see is going to be one of those. If it played in an IMAX theater it would be 1.43. It just depends what the master distribution copy will be.

And if you like the image to fill the screen, you will either be cutting it on top and bottom or on the sides. The issue I have is why don't studios release different versions people could get according to their screen and preferences? And in case with digiral versions, those could adjust automatically. I believe most movies are shot in a similar way like here, the original image always gets cropped. And, for example, on Blu-rays and DVDs the movie is only 2.35:1, and then you discover that on some streaming service it's shown in open matte.

The fact that if you watch this on your TV, we are getting fewer pixels than if he’d framed to 16:9. Since the vast majority of the movie is composited images, there’s little reason he couldn’t have done a great 16:9 version. We are not going to see this on any movie screen. It’s a TV product. A appreciate that you are seeing a larger field of view, but it’s smaller on our TV as a result. I know most cinematic movies aren’t 16:9. But this is not a cinematic product. It’s a TV movie. It’s being released on HBO on TV.

It’s a TV project. I want it framed for my TV. Unfortunately, not even all TV shows have the good sense to do that, like the Star Trek shows. We all have 16:9 TVs. Is it too much to ask that products that are produced specifically for that format actually use every pixel?

Would you also suggest that no one shoot B&W anymore because we have colour TVs? Films come in all shapes and sizes and have done for over 100 years. Aspect ratios are a tool like anything else.
I really want Marvel to release both Infinity War and Endgame in their IMAX aspect ratios on Blu Ray and 4K eventually, as those were all completely shot on IMAX. I'm glad WB has done this with Dark Knight and Aquaman home releases just because you get so much more of the action at the top and bottom. Marvel should take advantage of this as well, they clearly have the resources to do so.

Content was made back then for the average TV that was 15-20 inches. This was filmed for an IMAX screen (and framed with 1.85 in mind) so the shots will actually feel wider and more open.
@@YourMovieFix i have a 75 inch tv infront of me. I watched the trailer on my tv and it still felt claustrophobic. Remember the 110inch tv back in the early 2000's, where it was this massive huge box shaped thing with terrible image? This movie will fill those screens perfectly. I 100% hated the trailer. Not because of the actual movie, I think it is going to be great, but I constantly felt off, and after the 3rd watch I realized why. It just feels like everything was squeezed into a box.

@@ARBLACKx Yeah, the top of Darkseid's head was the only significant thing I noticed being cropped out. The rest seemed fine. I'm sure Snyder still filmed it with the 1:85:1 aspect ratio in mind for regular theaters and televisions. I'll watch it both ways and see which one I like more.
@@kelex12 i wish he gave us an option to choose what AR to watch it in. Honestly feel that it is a baffling decision that he decided to release the movie with this AR especially for an epic superhero movie. Like imagine watching The Dark Knight Trilogy (especially the IMAX scenes) or Infinity War/Endgame at home with the 4:3 ratio. We left the box square TVs behind for widescreen ages ago.
@@ARBLACKx I agree. There should be a choice to choose which aspect ratio you want before the movie starts. Hopefully they will do it on a blu-ray release. If not, at least we can change the picture size to a 1:85:1 ratio. I understand his version is giving us more picture on the top and bottom but most people don't care about that. It works on an IMAX screen but on our home televisions it's not as appealing. Like I said, it will be interesting to watch it like that once but I wouldn't watch it like that every time.

Really good video. Good to see someone sharing the correct kind of info about this stuff in relation to such a high profile movie.
One thing I would say is that it would've been even better to use animated transitions between the ratio shifts, just to make it really clear for people who still aren't grasping the point. That way it would be very clear that the left and right isn't being cropped at all, only the top and bottom.

Having now watched the film in his 4:3 ratio, i must say that it looks awful. Just what I want from my 4 hour blockbuster superhero movies...... to look like a tv show from 1985. All the black edges (almost HALF of my screen) look great on my widescreen tv. SMH!!! What an idiot!!! Another reason Marvel films are leaps and bounds ahead of DC. Maybe "The Batman" can get it right.

Zack enjoyed the 1,43 aspect ratio on BvS yet full frame has never been realesed, we only have leaks of a 1,78 version that isn't on the blurays.

the problem is TV manufacturers settled on a compromise between 4:3 and 21:9 and came up with 16:9. Instead of going straight to 21:9. Had they gone to 21:9 then we'd not have these aspect ratio issues such as black bars top and bottom of the TV.. We'd see the full frame of the image on the TV.
The confusion most people are running into is remembering how old square tv's cropped the image. But this is kinda the reverse of that
i don't know much about aspect ratio shit, but in some scene in a cinema aspect ratio movie its more wider in left and right than HDTV or 1.33 aspect ratio, so why dont zynder shot the entire footage with more further or wider ? and edited with HDTV, imax, cinema or common aspect ratio ?

It's movies like Snyder's JL that make me wish i had a projector.
I’ll take the unpopular opinion, and while this 1.33 aspect ratio would look amazing in an IMAX or any theater in general, you get the tall big image. However, while we do get more image info, as our TVs are horizontal the black bars at the left and right will be considerable, and while the image will have more info up and down, it won’t look taller on a TV. It’ll look box’d up and it might feel like you’re missing info on the sides (specially on smaller tv screens). I will watch this first with the 1.33 ratio but it would be great imo if they have an option to switch between 1.33 to 1.66 or even 1.78
16:9 TVs are specifically designed so you get the most real estate when watching 4:3 or 21:9 content.

YourMovieFix indeed it is. It wasn’t really advertised that much and that is the only release that contains the films in that AR. I encourage you to search on UA-cam and you can find some scenes from that version.

There's tons of reason to not film it in widescreen. Tight aspect ratios like 1.37:1 can convey certain emotions, claustrophobia, display the action in different ways, etc. It's a tool like any other aspect ratio.

@@rpggaming1976 Go watch The Lighthouse and tell me the shots don't feel cramped. Or for the inverse, go watch Lawrence of Arabia and tell me the shots don't feel vast. Aspect ratios can also be used as a narrative tool. For The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson used three aspect ratios to denote which timeline we were in: 1.37:1 for the 30's, 2.39:1 for the 60's, and 1.85:1 for the 80's. Like I said above, aspect ratios are a tool and while Snyder had the ability to shoot in 16:9, he didn't want to and he doesn't need to. Movies, for the most part, aren't made with your TV in mind. They're made for the cinema.

Well the trailers have been 1.33. So its a bit confusing as IMAX tends to play at 1.43. So the final version that we all see is going to be one of those. If it played in an IMAX theater it would be 1.43. It just depends what the master distribution copy will be.

Wow... I totally rather this aspect ratio than that ridiculous 2.4. I rather to have little black bars on the sides than up and bottom. I kind of hate that 2.4 aspect ratio. I just hate that we lose that much image on our tvs.

And if you like the image to fill the screen, you will either be cutting it on top and bottom or on the sides. The issue I have is why don't studios release different versions people could get according to their screen and preferences? And in case with digiral versions, those could adjust automatically.
I believe most movies are shot in a similar way like here, the original image always gets cropped. And, for example, on Blu-rays and DVDs the movie is only 2.35:1, and then you discover that on some streaming service it's shown in open matte.

Because you'll get more out of a TV screen using 1.66 than 1.43. It's a nice in-between.

@@sanam511 Zack shoots on film camera not digitally (as Joss Whedon did with the JL reshoots? He shot digitally instead) along with "film grain" i don't think details are lost too much y'know.

The fact that if you watch this on your TV, we are getting fewer pixels than if he’d framed to 16:9. Since the vast majority of the movie is composited images, there’s little reason he couldn’t have done a great 16:9 version. We are not going to see this on any movie screen. It’s a TV product. A appreciate that you are seeing a larger field of view, but it’s smaller on our TV as a result. I know most cinematic movies aren’t 16:9. But this is not a cinematic product. It’s a TV movie. It’s being released on HBO on TV.
Just release it so it fills everyone's tvs fully since this is a TV release and not a cinema release. This seems silly.

It’s a TV project. I want it framed for my TV. Unfortunately, not even all TV shows have the good sense to do that, like the Star Trek shows. We all have 16:9 TVs. Is it too much to ask that products that are produced specifically for that format actually use every pixel?
@@bcbock Yes, it is too much to ask that. Filmmakers are going to make their film however they like to fit their vision. Would you also suggest that no one shoot B&W anymore because we have colour TVs? Films come in all shapes and sizes and have done for over 100 years. Aspect ratios are a tool like anything else.
I really want Marvel to release both Infinity War and Endgame in their IMAX aspect ratios on Blu Ray and 4K eventually, as those were all completely shot on IMAX. I'm glad WB has done this with Dark Knight and Aquaman home releases just because you get so much more of the action at the top and bottom. Marvel should take advantage of this as well, they clearly have the resources to do so.

This is basically almost the same as those BS tv's we had bad in the 80's. This aspect ration feels claustrophobic. Everything feels squeezed into a box. This is crap!!!! Our see the world in landscape and not in a box. This is going to be so annoying
Content was made back then for the average TV that was 15-20 inches. This was filmed for an IMAX screen (and framed with 1.85 in mind) so the shots will actually feel wider and more open.
@@YourMovieFix i have a 75 inch tv infront of me. I watched the trailer on my tv and it still felt claustrophobic. Remember the 110inch tv back in the early 2000's, where it was this massive huge box shaped thing with terrible image? This movie will fill those screens perfectly. I 100% hated the trailer. Not because of the actual movie, I think it is going to be great, but I constantly felt off, and after the 3rd watch I realized why. It just feels like everything was squeezed into a box.

@@YourMovieFix i tell you, I am beyond excited for this movie. Affleck is the best Batman ever, and they messed him up so badly in Justice League. Zack is bqck and Ben will be the batman we love. I truly hope they release this to fill the entire screen. I don't want to sit there and have this great movie spoiled by a silly thing like the aspect ratio. I have terrible ocd, and if something bothers me, I constantly focus on that one thing and forget the enjoyment of the whole thing. Those black bars will be the thing that distract me the entire time and I will miss out on a great movie
