What is all the nonsense in some of these comments? This era in Australia was total magic. These bands, The Twilights being in the top 5, were such a blessing for young Australians. Thank you guys! Great music and performance!
in 1966 i was a a 17 year old going to IMPACT, a sat night dance at Dandenong Town Hall. ,Every sat night a group would play live music, all the top acts going in aust.at that time. On all occasions us kids would dance to the music, EXCEPT the night when the TWILIGHTS played. Such was their pressence and sheer musicianship that the whole place just stood and listened to their whole set. That had never happened before. They were that good.
I was a 17 y.o. drummer in a crap band in the first (1966) Hoadleys Battle of the Sounds, which these guys won. Before the show, I heard them practising their vocals backstage by the boxing ring, and immediately thought "can I go home now?". They were H-O-T (and we were not) ...
Gentlemen, please relax. During the '60s Australia had a population of about 10 million compared to the US of over 250 million. We produced a few strongly original bands (The Easybeats, The Loved Ones, Wild Cherries, Masters Apprentices et al) in the '60s compared to the 50-100 from the US and UK. It's a relativity thing. White British & UK bands copied from black US R&B and blues artists and Oz artists copied from the white versions. So credit where credit is due...
The band scene was really hot in Melbourne in the 60's there were scores of dances where all the good and not so good bands played, the pubs were shut and everyone went to the dances to see the Twilights etc.
Just saw Glenn Shorrock live tonight, and am still pumped. Found myself looking up old clips and came across this. My three best friends and I did a go-go dance to this great record at our end of the year school concert in 1966. Aahh what memories!!!
I love it. The Twilights were one of my favourite bands back then. No one could top Billy Thorpe though (RIP). I still remember the day that the Twilights performed on the show hosted by Billy -'It's All Happening' in 1966 and Peter looked into my eyes. I thought I was going to melt. Where are you Pete? My eyes have never felt the same. OK, a long time has passed but this still sounds great.
My god, Glenn, you look so damn young ! But then, I guess that I, too, once looked that spritely (I'm now 54, but was born at the right time, and STILL rocking on to this day !). Seriously, The Twilights were one of my very favourite 60s Oz bands. Their line-up was PACKED with artistic & creative talent - way beyond the most obvious success story, Glenn Shorrock. They seemed to have hit after hit in their time. Superb film clip too - I remember it from early TV shows back in those days.
If you love this, like i do, go check out the Newbeats', "Bread and Butter". Same era, same tempo, movements, sound. Another great song from the sixties.
My uncle's band came in runner up to the Twilights in a battle of the bands comp...l believe he said this was the song they played. Would've loved to witness that.
Great song! I had to do a double take at Glenn Shorrock. His button-down shirt and hair style are EXACTLY like how high school boys wore them when I was in high school from 1978-1982. This is like seeing a time-traveler!
In the interests of accuracy I've changed the video description to state that The Velvelettes version peaked at #45 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1964. I think you're right about the difference in feel between the versions but I like The Twilights' rockier arrangement.
The Velvelettes were next t the Contours (Do You Love ME). as two of the most underated Groups to come out of Motown in the early 1960's. The performed this Song on a Show Called "Where The Action Is" in the 1960's, which was like an Outdoor Version of American Bandstand. It was also covered by The Blossoms who were the "backing" Group on Shindig that Darlene Love also moonlighted on who was the actual "Lead" Vocalist on He's a Rebel.
This was actually done by The Velvelettes who were next to Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, Mabel John and The Countours the early acts to record for Motown who were overlooked and forgotten in The Motown Story. Also it was performed by The Blossoms on Shindig who were the backing vocal group and they (without Darlene Love) worked with Elvis Presley on His Comeback Special in 1968.
I wish they had kept to original material. I saw them in Feb 1966 on the Rolling Stones show. They did "If She Finds Out" I went out and bought it. "Its Dark" is another superb song wasted as a B side. "Young Girl," "Cathy Come Home" "The Way They Play" all good originals.
OMG I used to watch them at Biting Eye, Ltle Bourke St Melbourne, nearly every time they played, great venue for bands in the 60's as well as Le Chateau
Thanks for the info- I knew the original song when it first came out in the early 60's, but didn't know the name of the group that recorded it. I actually like this bubble gummy version, but I have varied tastes in music.
Flashback egad. turned 14 in 66 and fell in love with Gayle O;Bryan, end of year class party we played this till the record just about died and all the kids kept dancing to it. Still love it and so do the old school mates! Barely played a Beatle or Stones song all night. Maybe us western suburb kids knew what was reallly good?
I’m so glad to ave rediscovered this absolute gem. I grew up in the late 70s and early 80s listening to this song on the radio. What a great sound and song, I recently discovered that this was originally from an Afro-American Female group a couple of years earlier. Both the original and this version are awesome. I love them both.
The Twilights prided themselves on getting Beatles Albums here b4 anybody else & loved the fact that they could play note for note in concert b4 many of the audience knew the songs. They used to do a complete Sgt Pepper show
.....They were that good huh, the Beatles seemed incapable of performing live after mid sixties . I've known only one good band that did covers better than original artists .
This is a very nice cover of the Velvelettes hit Needle in a haystack. Glenlyons98, I don't agree that this was a minor hit in the US for the black girl group the Velvelettes, as written in your description. This was a major hit in the US for this group. With the Velvelettes hit, I can feel what they're singing..singing like they know what they're talking about, unsure about the Twilights, but again, I do like it. Thank you for posting.
This version is new to me, and I love it! I apologize for the US jerks whom seem to think they can't love the Velvelettes version and this one too, I'm a big LRB fan, so finding the Twilights was a great treat.
Pfft! This version is way better. Velvelettes lead singer is shaky and doesn't have conviction. Twilights singer sings it like he means it regardless of color. Ethnicity aint got "nuttin" to do wit it...
While I absolutely adore this song by this band and this particular performance, I wonder just how many young Australian men were drafted under such a banner and amidst such an atmosphere to go off and fight and possibly die in Vietnam? I’m no cancel culturist but I would like to honour our war dead and life effected while I enjoy such a wonderful song and performance.
Back in the days when a disco was a discotheque and if a female said yes to your question of will you dance with me you fell over in shock. Especially if she was slim and reasonably good looking. I usually got the larger acne riddled side kick and Terry got the lead female of the set. Was the GoSet magazine 10 cents back then? I devoured that paper like it was the gospel. Thanks to the posting person.
You mean "their Version the original of course being done by Martha & The Vandellas. This Song was actually done by The Velvelettes who were next to The Contours two of the most overlooked Groups at Motown.
100xs Times better, crapola jack, these blokes were playing at dances and pubs and appealed to many in Oz without the hype and glitz of recording company money behind them, take it as you see it, a group of musos making happy music.
You're comparing a female band to a male garage band, pretty dumb pal, anyway Glen Shorrock went on to lead LRB and had a number of hits in your backyard so where are the velvos now?
Do a deal with you jack, don't come and check out Oz bands and I won't bother with the yank ones, coz I really take offence to your rubbishing our 40 year old bands, note bands not girlie groups.
What is all the nonsense in some of these comments?
This era in Australia was total magic. These bands, The Twilights being in the top 5, were such a blessing for young Australians. Thank you guys! Great music and performance!
They were a hoot. So glad to have lived through those times.
in 1966 i was a a 17 year old going to IMPACT, a sat night dance at Dandenong Town Hall. ,Every sat night a group would play live music, all the top acts going in aust.at that time. glenn shorrock has always been brilliant no matter which band hes in
All these bands the Masters ,Valentines had this fantastic vibrancy
Australia should get more credit for the bands They have, alot of underrated, Great Bands come from down under. .
Great song Great band saw them many times at Sebastian's and Victoria and Albert
Bloody love this version. 1966, what a year!!!!
That was the year they brought in decimal currency - dollars and cents after it was pounds, shillings and pence.
Hell who cares who did which to whom in what order - this is a great track and if it doesn't get people up to dance I'd give up.
Great little story, puts all of us right there.
Top memory Ray!
Ray Moon What a great memory. Yeah, these guys had talent.
...... and to top it off they were huuuuuuuuuuuuge Beatles fans.
Awsome 👌🤘great Aussie music

Who's watching this from outside Australia? I'm interested in your opinion if you are in your '70 or older.
I love it. The Twilights were one of my favourite bands back then. No one could top Billy Thorpe though (RIP). I knew the Twilights before they were famous. Aren't they just GREAT! Love this song, and all the others they did. P.S. I am 60 this month.
Thanks guys. Make me wonder how Whitney & others(Smokey, Johnny M...) Would sound (vibes).,
I absolutely adore The Velvelettes R'n'B version but this is a great rock and roll cover of "Needle In A Haystack". Thanks for posting.
One of the best songs ever .U go Glenn 🤠👌😎love it try not to dance or smile..shadoop
I've always loved this classic from a great Aussie band. Rock n Roll's finest
Gawd this brings Back Memories of the Dances held at the Blacktown Town Hall every Saturday Night..
Great Stuff

Never heard this Song before, I Like it, I'll put it on My playlist. It's a bouncy tune!!!
Very cool. Edgy.
Wow, memories, saw them in play in a venue just off St. Kilda road in Melbourne, there were great
I was probably there (Opus)! They were the real deal. Fabulous

I also remember seeing the Twilights at the Oxford Club in King William St Adelaide in 1966.

They were packed out

Just before I was born but love it :) Spinning the original 45 vinyl now :) Hey hey hey! :)))

In 1966 I had exactly the same Guild Starfire 3 as Terry Britten is playing in this clip!
Look at Mr Shoerack dancing away! He can’t stand still at all and is all excited.
great sound
Thanks for the info- I knew the original song when it first came out in the early 60's, but didn't know the name of the group that recorded it. I actually like this bubble gummy version, but I have varied tastes in music.

Frank (The Twilights) and Judy Barnard were such good friends - we even had a hot dog caravan - such fun back in the day
Great cover of the Marvellettes.
Shorrock was always a great singer
This is a very nice cover of the Velvelettes hit Needle in a haystack. Glenlyons98, I don't agree that this was a minor hit in the US for the black girl group the Velvelettes, as written in your description. This was a major hit in the US for this group. THAT guitar is what I'm gettin' next.
Such a great band.
GREAT, GREAT BAND , nothing more to be said
This version is new to me, and I love it! I apologize for the US jerks whom seem to think they can't love the Velvelettes version and this one too, I'm a big LRB fan, so finding the Twilights was a great treat.

Thought I recognized that voice
I grew up with guys and I am fromAustralia
While I absolutely adore this song by this band and this particular performance, I wonder just how many young Australian men were drafted under such a banner and amidst such an atmosphere to go off and fight and possibly die in Vietnam? Just got a hold of their first selftitled LP today - can't wait to clean it and fire up the record player.
There is more truth in this song than we give it credit for haha
Wow 12 years ago :O
jeez look how young Glenn looks
And of course Terry Britten went on to write some memorable songs (think Cliff Richard, Tina Turner ...et al)
THIS is some good SHIT I TELL YOU ...REALLY GOOD!!!!!!!@
Ah, yeah-sweet!!
❤️❤️❤️
they look very eager!
Love thus version reminds me of the who's heatwave
You mean "their Version the original of course being done by Martha & The Vandellas. This Song was actually done by The Velvelettes who were next to The Contours two of the most overlooked Groups at Motown.
Yes their version. I also like "in my lonely room" by Martha reeves plus the version by the action a UK mod band from the 60s
cool
HELP🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗Can't find the Twilights song 'Always' does anybody know it?
😊
Take that, women.
I agree. Who needs this?
Tight pants will get you this key …. She roots, sheewawa, 😂❤
Sounds like the Hollies.
What others sang this song ?
"Goolang goolang..." Cool.
Glenn Shorrocks with hair.
Someone should of woken these guys up with LSD. LOL,
Groovy! Did anybody mention general Beatles influence? ( ;
100xs Times better, crapola jack, these blokes were playing at dances and pubs and appealed to many in Oz without the hype and glitz of recording company money behind them, take it as you see it, a group of musos making happy music.
Not a patch on The Velvelettes.
Just as well they weren't trying to be then.
Nah...this version has got some backbone.
I thought these guys were a gas live and sharrock well look what happened to him .
You're comparing a female band to a male garage band, pretty dumb pal, anyway Glen Shorrock went on to lead LRB and had a number of hits in your backyard so where are the velvos now?
don't subscribe to me cos i havent got a video camera
Wonder what our music in the 60s would have been like without 10 pound poms lol no offence intended
Do a deal with you jack, don't come and check out Oz bands and I won't bother with the yank ones, coz I really take offence to your rubbishing our 40 year old bands, note bands not girlie groups.
Sly, thick and shy…
Crap.. New Zealand bands superior... Tom Thumb.. Dedikation Dave Miller Set.. Larry Morris... The Avengers.. The Fourmulya...
Cool!!
brilliant
So much of this wonderful music and its musicians forgotten
