Our country's history of slavery should be acknowledged and condemned, BUT the gator bait chant was created less than 30 years ago, by a proud gator who was also a former black football player! This chant was never meant to reference African American babies who were used as alligator bait. This ban is a mistake on UF's part.

I doubt the person that coined the phrase “Gator bait” had racist intentions. However, the phrase has racial undertones and that can’t be ignored. That phrase was used in a racial way in the past. I’m all for tradition, but not if it honors a past as ugly as that, whether intentionally or not. Ignorance is not justification.
