One thing I learned in public speaking -- you wish that politeness paid off when giving a speech. Actually,... in reality.... politeness invites the audience to look down on you. When giving a speech, don't start off really polite. That's just one example of how reality is not logical.
Probably it doesn't work because many people are not doing it authentically. They act polite misleadingly while feeling not that good against them at all, and people sense the energy. Natural>tactics.

Good stuff... what's funny is even if you get some of these things wrong you can still get good results here and there just by putting the effort in and interacting with people. But if you want to optimize then everything you said helps a ton.
