  • This video demonstrates how to create layered designs using LightBurn for your laser engraver. Using one simple piece of clipart to design a multilayered project. Use $2 of materials and some scrap. Along with a used frame from a yard sale and create a $20 item to sell.

At 2.03 you changed your image to one of the line modes. How did you do this. I am only familiar with the trace option and your way looks much better.

Using Lightburn it is simply changing it from a fill mode to a line mode in the cuts/layers editor.

    This is very confusing. 😮

If this was confusing, the 8-layer design I talked about in today's live might really blow your mind. OR it may just be this was one of my earlier videos and I was still figuring things out myself and I didn't do the best job explaining things. But I have documented my entire learning curve on Lightburn here on UA-cam and this was one of my earlier videos.

For a guy just stumbling along. The finished work looks pretty darn good. Maybe I’ll get there someday…..with your help of course.

Thanks, Steve. About to dive into the xtool any day now-trying to learn as much as I can until then-you’ve shown me more that I’ll be able to do. Greatly appreciated!

That's the wrong attitude. I didn't know ANYTHING about lasers or LightBurn until June 2022. I am where I am with my abilities in just four months. I still have a lot to learn and a lot to share as I learn it. Thanks for watching and stay tuned.

I appreciate the time you took to watch (and subscribe, I hope). I enjoy sharing as I learn. There may be better ways to do what I do. And often viewers will share a better way in the comments. I greatly appreciate it when they do. I do believe this channel is and should be mutually beneficial. Thanks again for watching.

You had to go deep in the closet to find that video. It was in my early days of Lightburn and UA-cam. Glad you liked it.

I didn't find what I was looking for but every time I watch your videos I learn more than one thing and thats a good thing.
What I was looking for is a way to use sub layers so I can do more than one operation at a time. Like if I was doing a clock with the numbers on the outside and a graphic on the inside. How would I be able to do the numbers and the graphic in the middle instead of the laser burning side to side all the way up to burn the numbers, skipping the space in the middle, and than coming all the way back down again to do the same motion again with the graphic. Seems like a lot of wasted time.
Anyway, what is the difference between "Weld" and "Group". Seems like the same outcome to me?

I like the way you're thinking. So many people do not consider the nonessential travel of their laser. My next video will be discussing it, so stay tuned. Sublayers in Lightburn do not work in the way you are hoping they would. The laser is going to complete each individual layer and sublayer completely before starting the next. You can, however, cut down down on wasted movements using other features and techniques. Search my playlists for videos discussing different "fill" techniques. "Fill vs Offset fill vs Flood fill" is one of them. Then, you have the ability to change the fill method. Fill as groups, fill individually, etc. Those options can also save time. But they can sometimes produce undesired outcomes. I have videos on these options as well. I've found the best solution to save time on traversal moves is to segment a design that would otherwise require a lot of wasted movement. It takes a couple of minutes to set up. But on a design that you may be repeating regularly, it is well worth the extra time in the design process. An example of how I segment a design can be seen in the description of my "Stash Box" on my website hobowithwood.com. You might find it fruitful to watch. My next video will be addressing all of the questions you've posted here. Including the difference between group and weld. That one is easy. When you group 4 objects, it becomes a group of 4 individual objects. Click on one, and you select them all. When you weld 4 objects, they become one individual object. You can group many objects regardless of location in the design. You can only weld objects that are touching one another. Hopefully, that helps a little. Be sure to tune into the next video. It's going to be a lenghty one full of suggestions that are going to address all they things you're asking about. Thanks for watching.

      @@HoboWithWood
Yes on welding and grouping I figured that out. But why weld when you can just group? On that aspect of it I still don't understand the point of the programmers making a weld button which means there has to be an advantage of one over the other and that is what I don't know.
It's like the difference of a black racing tire and a purple racing tire. Whats the point of making a purple tire if there is not an advantage over the black racing tire?
I just want to understand the advantage of one over the other. Maybe there is no advantage? I dunno.....

    • @HoboWithWood
      @HoboWithWood  Рік тому +1

@@iwannaapple7190 There is a HUGE advantage of a purple racing tire over a black one... the burnouts are so much cooler. I'm going to try and go over most of this exact content in my next video, it's actually already in the works. But this dialogue will make sure I don't forget to cover something, so I appreciate it. Let's say I am creating a border using the array tool that is made up of 30 individual shapes. The array was generated with no space between the shapes. In fill mode they appear to be one continuous design. They are not. The are 30 individual shapes that happen to touch each other. When in engraving, depending on the settings used, it may try to fill each of the 30 individual shapes instead of filling one continuous design. This could create irregular burn patterns, excessive time and other issues. Grouping allows you to make changes to certain parts of the design as a group. For instance, if you wanted to have a different LPI or scan angle on a particular group of shapes, you can select the shapes, group them, regardless of their proximity to one another, and put that group on it's on layer and make the desired changes with one setting. Does that help?

A local Jeep club holds an annual fund raiser for local cancer charity organization. I donated one of my wooden purses for their silent auction. The invited me to setup and sell my wares. It was my first and last car show. Not the best venue to sell my goods. I did sell most of my Jeep creations, but little else. I used to off-road, but in a long time.
