      @@Jpgaps Actually they make headers for both NA and boosted applications and most factory cars start with a basic exhaust manifold but that's neither here or there, the joke is a play on the words heads and headers and common phrases in the car world; typically a person running virtually no exhaust system would have open headers and nothing else past the header collector, in this case there is literally no component to the exhaust system at all. So when he states he's running "open heads" the guy thinks he meant to say "open headers" but he actually wasn't mistaken and is quite literally running his engine with open cylinder head exhaust ports.

    • @archygrey9093
      @archygrey9093 3 роки тому +58

      @@jankington216 Its not back pressure thats needed for scavenging, its narrow exhaust pipes. Back pressure is just an unwanted side affect of that.
      Basically narrow exhaust pipes means the exhaust gas will be forced to travel at higher velocity so it exits the tailpipe while still warm, hot gas moves much easier and quicker. Also the higher velocity of gas aids in the scavenging effect.
      Having an exhaust pipe too wide gives the gases time to form plugs of cool dense air thats hard to push out causing small loss of power from back pressure funnily enough. As one plug is pushed out another is formed, you can sometimes hear it as a "choof choof" sound at the tailpipe of a small car with a big exhaust, you will also probably notice the exhaust gas is not very warm.
      Can't go too narrow either, or the back pressure will be too much, the optimum width of the exhaust pipe is dependent on the size of the engine and the rev range you plan to use it at.
      Keep in mind changes in back pressure will affect tuning especially for carburetored engines, you can re-tune to match the new exhaust but thats probably where the myth that you need back pressure comes from, since some poeple probably decreased the back pressure, found it ran like shit and blamed it on lack of back pressure, rather than lack of tuning.

    • @FuttBuckerByMutt
      @FuttBuckerByMutt 3 роки тому +22

      @@jankington216 You want vacuum not back pressure. The phenomenon is misunderstood on why a engine runs better with manifolds or headers. You want low air pressure in the exhaust so when the exhaust stroke happens it gets sucked out of the cylinder. If you had back pressure your car would run like dog shit. More efficient engines have scavenging, but that has more to do with your cam than exhaust. If your engine relied purely on your piston to push the air out on the 4th stroke it would hardly run because not all the exhaust is leaving the chamber. In most modern engines for a very brief moment the intake valve and exhaust valve are open at the same time. As the exhaust valve is near closed the intake valve will open to push the remaining exhaust gases out using the intake air because in that time period the exhaust has lost most of its vacuum and the piston is near tdc. This is more apparent on turbo charged cars that have been modified and have a 2-step. That fire that shoots out of the exhaust is caused by this, but obviously this is an extreme case. What most people don’t understand about engines when learning about them is that the 4-strokes are not completely separate functions. Each stroke helps the next one and sometimes for very brief moments the are occurring at the same time
