I wouldn't say they just let Silent Hill fade into obscurity. Konami got out of developing Triple A games entirely. Just about everything that isn't a pachinko machine, a mobile game, or PES soccer is no longer in their business. Silent Hill created an absolute ridiculous buzz for a new installment with PT. Konami is still willing to license out existing IP's, and there have been talks with Sony. Konami was also doing very badly for a while before leaving the Triple A development industry. They have been turning great profits doing what they are doing for a while so they may eventually be willing to revive the series.
