A very stodgy performance. The second movement in particular limps along ('semplicemente' for Haydn means 'artlessly'). The repeats are missing here, and the horns are played an octave too low.
I can cope with the slower tempi, largely because I like to hear different approaches; the loose understanding of Italian directions though is a widespread issue as many are mis-interpreted through a 19th century prism - you make a good point. It is good that the orchestra is playing this magical, but relatively unknown symphony of 1774, though it might have been better played complete, rather than only about half of it. I have commented elsewhere about conductors playing fast and lose over repeats - it is unacceptable; you cannot take a conductor or orchestra’s interpretation seriously if they do not understand that by ignoring da capo markings they have unbalanced both the movement and the whole symphony. The da capo marks are instructions, not optional take-it-or-leave-it suggestions.

Thank you for response! Oh gosh! Are you the very one Schoolmaster, aren't you? :-) Nice to hear from you! :-)

Complete sense of humour bypass.
