The short comment is that yet again, this conductor and orchestra have uploaded another fantastic performance of a wonderful Haydn symphony; the standards reached are comparable to the very best found anywhere on UA-cam (and live in the concert hall). Everything is a triple plus: perfect tempi, split violins, orchestral balance, interpretation, da capo repeats, the shaping of the music - all this, and so much more, are simply perfect. I was particularly impressed with the precision and highly skilled ensemble playing in the Prestissimo finale, and also the way in which the fragmentary slow movement, like the rest of the symphony, so completely un-Mozartian, was moulded into a very satisfying whole; sometimes something of a challenge for an audience expecting Mozartian style ‘tunes’. Also loved the bounce in the Minuet; is this the first ever Viennese waltz ? Hidemi Suzuki clearly has a deep understanding, knowledge and love of the composer which shines through these performances; this enthusiasm is evident in the players’ performance. In summary: a fantastic performance of a fantastic symphony which is full of the most original, fascinating and lovely detail - make sure you listen more than once.
I like how the laughter section (descending dim seventh) is given to just the first violins. Very commendable performance of a first rate and underperformed symphony!
Good point - the split violins help enormously which is what Haydn (Mozart and Beethoven as well) would have expected; it’s strange how so many orchestras today use the more modern lay-out of both 1st and 2nd violins massed to the conductor’s left with all the bass to the right.
Well. Since the 13 comments prior were obviously by musicians, I'd just add the camera, lighting work also is fine. Fine being better than awesome, fabulous, 110%; which doesn't exist. Sew their cut my hair!
You make a good point, if these performances are going to be filmed, then they should be done professionally and well as it enhances enormously the enjoyment - and understanding - of the music, especially if you can actually see what’s going on when musical ideas for example are passed around the orchestra.
Haydn est toujours intéressant. Cette symphonie peu connue est une merveille.
The best half hour ever! So wonderful! Haydn’s music is a blessing to the human spirit!
Haydn's originality and invention never fail to surprise and entertain me. What a genius! Fine performance.
Me too! Amazing.
Fantastic performance of this too infrequently played masterpiece
Totally agree. Fantastic Symphony!
Absolute the most beautiful and impressive performance on You Tube of this marvelous symphony ! Thank you !

Elaine Blackhurst You are so right! Such delight!

For such a small orchestra. They make a big beautiful sound great really. Great.

Really nice. Great for such a SMALL SYMPHONY. BRAVO. BRAVO
Haydn never gets his do. A masterpiece, finer than many Mozart symphonies.
shnimmuc This one requires such precision and strength combined.
Fine performance!
