HOLY SHIT THIS BAND IS SO GOOD!!!! Especially after you've listened to the songs a few times and learn all the corners, nooks, and crannies that make them so good. I'm only familiar with their second album, but I'm sure I'd love Tibetan pop star if I listened to it, along with the rest of the first album, a few more times.
Heard this live and immediately went out and bought the album. It has some really REALLY good moments, and a few just okay moments. But lots of things that will get stuck in your mind for days. Definitely worth a listen on Spotify, and easily worth the price of the album.
Cmonkey1980 spotify is the best thing ever. i got here from listening to Lemuria who i just discovered from Swearin' which i just discovered from Speedy Ortiz. its just great. i like this girls voice. its very different. i like how its beautiful and then really raspy.
miked4309 Yeah, me too. It was definitely her voice that caught my attention, though I do enjoy the music as well. I'm curious where they go from here. Going to go check out those other bands you mentioned. Have a good one!
miked4309 yes me too love The Joy Formidable and like Courtney Barnett, Lemuria, Lemolo, Warpaint, Betty Blowtorch, Wolf Alice, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Anouk, Beth Hart, Mammùt, Au Revoir Simone, Soko, Aella, L7, Sleater-Kinney, Ni Voz Ni Voto and Panyoba(from my country Perú) etc
Piero5711 nice. i must admit i i have heard of a lot of those bands but not heard the music. courtney barnett has some great songs. i love L7..saw them a bunch of times. I used to be really into Sleater Kinney. other female fronted bands i lvoe aare Giant Drag (my avitar), Juliana Hatfields bands (all of them) the breeders. Babes in Toyland, 7 Year Bitch, Bikini Kill. Magnapop. the list is very long. cant think of them all LOL
i discovered this band through the guitarist joe was in a very different band called algernon cadwallader that i like very much. hes an excellent guitarist and has brought his talent nicely to this band
No shit!?! I always wondered what happened to them. Feels like everything is coming full circle now, wow. Thanks for that tidbit. Made me happy just to hear literally ANYONE ELSE mention Algernon Cadwallader.
same.. they popped up on random Spotify playlist and i would usually not be interested and skip.. "Get Disowned" came on and for whatever reason I didn't skip. when she gets to the "Pokono mountains in the sixties" line i was hooked
as much as i am a fan of frances tearing her vocal chords apart to do the earlier shows, i'm so fucking contented to hear her singing in a tenor that doesn't actually cause long term damage. special creature.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I knew you'd guys blow up after I first heard that live video of "Bruno Is Orange" and I'm glad that other people thought you would too! I love your music! Y'all are the best!
I was wondering why she sounded so reserved while speaking, and then she said the swearing thing and I thought "oh, that makes PERFECT sense." Also, her voice is so shot. I love it!
Wow, now I respect him even more, Hop Along is probably my second favorite band and I just listened to 7 full modest mouse albums in the last month (I knew almost nothing about them two months ago). This is A Long Drive for Someone With Nothing To Think About is an incredible album.
Informal poll: who else here is a metalhead who can really appreciate her awesome voice while all of your friends/coworkers think she sounds like a dying cat?
My gf is really bad with dead animals and loves dogs and I get Sister Cities stuck in my head SO OFTEN it's a huge problem. I have to change it to "you know I had to pet that dog" whenever I sing in the shower if they're within earshot
Luis David Jimi Hendrix did the same thing. It could be that the songs require different tunings from the guitar (my ears aren't that great to say for certain), but Jimi's reason was because he just wanted to make sure he was in tune. Some guitars stay in tune and some just don't for reasons such as bridge, strings, nut, pegs, and just how hard you trash on it. It's just easier to tune before hand than to tune mid-performance.
Luis David i saw the band NO JOY and they did it too. theeey tuned and played with the pedals between every song and there was some feed back and noise the whold time and then they went right into the next song. it was very cool.
Tiago Barboza Honest question: I never liked Nirvana that much, though I frequently hear they get compared to Hop Along. What songs or what part of their material in general do you think I could enjoy the most?
+Pizzapaner I mean to each their own I guess, but concerts liek this are so much more enjoyable when teh crowd is into it. Symphony music is very calculated. Its understandable that keepign quiet and just listening is better because you get all the music. Rock is raw and imperfect. You dont listen to the music so much as feel it and theres no better way to feel it than in a crowd of people feeling it too and showing it.
Her voice is like silk and shrapnel all at once. Love this band.
Silk and shrapnel should have been their band name. That's so good
Painted shut is (in my humble opinion) the best Rock album of the last decade .
Just discovered Hop Along thanks to Frances' solo venture. What have I been doing with my life? So good.
Welcome

other than being overall awesome, I want to point out that this band's guitar tone is OFF THE CHARTS
Thinking the same thing. The FEEDBACK sounds better than anything I've ever been able to make 😂
@@louisroberts7606 for real! they have it so dialed.
A proper tele.
Props to Joe Reinhart, he also played in Algernon and is a guitar genius imo!

It took me about 4 tries to get into this band, and i finally get it
Her voice got me hooked on first listen
same.. they popped up on random Spotify playlist and i would usually not be interested and skip..
"Get Disowned" came on and for whatever reason I didn't skip. when she gets to the "Pokono mountains in the sixties" line i was hooked
One time my little sister said that indie music was indie because it isn't easy to love, but when you do you really do
saw them with waxahatchee and title fight a while back... what a great night
Daniel Perez aw man what a sweet lineup
Wish I were there!
wow awesome line up
as much as i am a fan of frances tearing her vocal chords apart to do the earlier shows, i'm so fucking contented to hear her singing in a tenor that doesn't actually cause long term damage.
special creature.
Agreed. She seems to use the raspy/screechy parts more for emphasis nowadays. Which I am a big fan of.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I knew you'd guys blow up after I first heard that live video of "Bruno Is Orange" and I'm glad that other people thought you would too! I love your music! Y'all are the best!
waitress at 9:48 very crazy its a wonderfoul song. Congratulations to Hop Along. ThanKs for Kexp...
+Alice Edson my favorite from painted shut
Love love love love love this band!!!! Been listening to them for awhile now! Really good stuff from them!
This is incredible. I must see them live
She's intimidating in her delivery, very sweet when speaking to audience.
Such an amazing band. I love Joe's guitar style especially
he was in another great very different band called algernon cadwalladder i recommend...but you probably kno?
I feel like deserve a better crowd than this. Love the band. I like watching the live shows where everybody sings along to Tibetan Pop Song
God this is so good. This is the best shit to come out since the Breeders Last Splash.
Fantastic Performance from a fantastic young band...
I just saw them in St. Louis. Incredibly tight, and I almost broke into tears as soon as Frances started singing. I hope I get to see them again soon.
I love her raspy snarl!
or snarly rasp. either way, it's good.
same, cant get enough!
This crowd barely notices that theyre witnessing greatness. What a shame.
seen a number of performances with that same phenomenon...Zeppelin Danmarks Radio for one
You don't know how the crowd is feeling, dude. Assuming that is weird af lol
God, they sound tight!
God, this performance is soooo good, can't stop repeating it. A shame it's only about half an hour.
Completely fantastic performance. Thanks for the video!
I was wondering why she sounded so reserved while speaking, and then she said the swearing thing and I thought "oh, that makes PERFECT sense." Also, her voice is so shot. I love it!
My favorite band. Hands down.
Wow I have a Hop Along song on my old Myspace page lmao didnt know they got so popular since then
Amazing performance!
I love you Hop Along!
love this band
Just saw their final tour date in TO. Awesome Band! If you have a chance see them.
Man, I love their new guitarrist, his style is the perfect match for Frances voice.
+Walter Olivero Christiansen if you haven't already, check out his previous band - Algernon Cadwallader
thistownneedsmusic Oh my god! I know that band, got one of their albums, didn't even noticed he was in it.
I love you Hop Along
i wish the camera would focus on the entire band instead of just one person at a time because i really would love to see everyone in their whole
that's just how KEXP does things. i used to wish the same til i realized it wasn't gonna happen.
Only a couple seconds into the video, but that's a really unique voice I'm hearing
Dope setlist.
I love them so damn much, we're lucky. I give thanks to Frances, t'was my favorite name even before you
It's like if Joni Mitchell went electric but also blew out her vocal chords in the best way
Her performance with Weezer brought me here, and man, how glad i am!
Woah! You’ve just taken me there, cheers!
One of the many good things Isaac Brock did for me was turn me on to this band. Best opener I've seen
+Eduardo Alva Isaac Brock is the lead singer of modest mouse
Wow, now I respect him even more, Hop Along is probably my second favorite band and I just listened to 7 full modest mouse albums in the last month (I knew almost nothing about them two months ago). This is A Long Drive for Someone With Nothing To Think About is an incredible album.
TALENT!
Informal poll: who else here is a metalhead who can really appreciate her awesome voice while all of your friends/coworkers think she sounds like a dying cat?
:)
Not a metal head, but definitely the rest is true lol
cant say that im a metalhead, but my mom thinks the exact same when she heard her singing tibetan pop stars
I love you Hop Alone
Ok, I'm hooked
that G&L is so beautiful
good sound !!!
Tibetan Pop Starts at 14:00
Fan of the record more than live
She sounds like Shannon Hoon,i like her and the band.
I am so annoyed that their fan base is mostly cocky straight dudes calling Frances "a female [insert male grunge lead]". UGH
17:10-17:35 hits haaarrrddddd
I wish JB would form a band with them. that'd be cool.
The Knock is so good. The song is about Jehova's Wittnesses.
Is that confirmed somewhere?? That's hilarious
the best
i got my new earphones and im fucking listening to this
Is that Shaun White on the drums?
+shrimpsandwhich no, is the brother from lead singer!!
My gf is really bad with dead animals and loves dogs and I get Sister Cities stuck in my head SO OFTEN it's a huge problem. I have to change it to "you know I had to pet that dog" whenever I sing in the shower if they're within earshot
It's darkly funny and sweet that you do it
What happened to guitarist on right?
The timestamps are kinda off :(
I like it :)
I'd totally marry Queen Anslais
Female Shannon Hoon?
wow...I can dig that. Nice call.
This band rules...Its just the bass in the mix is up too loud.
Great, great, great.. no.. I wanna hear Sally! D: pls!
Wow... ads in the middle of songs now. Google: Driving everyone to adblock.
That's not Google that whoever uploaded the video choosing to put it in that spot
lol that was beautiful :3
Amazing but the mics a little low
Anyone gonna comment on how tight the drummer is?
Take my money now!!!!
her voice seems the jane's addiction's singer one
Drummer makes great job behind, but camera barely shows him. Pity
It's nice and different to hear a female voice used like this. It gives me grungy flashbacks.
Fucking badass!!!!!!!!!
If J Mascis was a chick.
crowd of #jazzdads do not appreciate
Except for 4:46. They appreciated that.
God, I'm so white. Been a while since this kind of shit sounded good to me. I would stare at the ceiling to their studio recordings.
Who the fuck puts an ad in the middle of the song
Great performance but the mixing could use some work.
Love the album, but not the quality of this video.
Great voice, btw. She sounds like Tom Waits' ittle grand niece. ;-)
Why she tunes her guitar between every song?
Luis David Probably because the songs were in different tunings.
Luis David
Jimi Hendrix did the same thing. It could be that the songs require different tunings from the guitar (my ears aren't that great to say for certain), but Jimi's reason was because he just wanted to make sure he was in tune. It looks like she had a pretty aggressive right hand technique. That can make a guitar go out of tune.
Ok sound guy cut 125Hz some, like 12 dB.
crowd is DEAD AS HELLLLL they didn't deserve that
I hear woman Cobain
Two fucking ads??
This is like the female version of pearl jam
its like two gallants but with a girl.
Sound guy is not doing this band justice,
Female Kurt ._.
Tiago Barboza That's what I was thinking!
Lol that voice...
Tiago Barboza shes a better singer than him by a very, very large margin
Tiago Barboza Honest question: I never liked Nirvana that much, though I frequently hear they get compared to Hop Along. What songs or what part of their material in general do you think I could enjoy the most?
Swdoc Dvmee Kurt was a way better
My ears are bleeding!
bearsandvodka And you love every second of it!
Awful crowd.
+Mateus Murozaki I don't see what's wrong with sitting back and enjoying wonderful music. Crowds at symphony halls do the same thing.
+Pizzapaner I mean to each their own I guess, but concerts liek this are so much more enjoyable when teh crowd is into it. Symphony music is very calculated. Wtf you talking about!? 15:16
female kurt vedder
Holy hell, do people actually classify that as singing?
yes. i am one of those people.
just a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy etc etc etc Zzzzzzzzzzz
I've had poop that sounded better.
duhtoff your poops must be fucking biblical
Hmm, that raspiness in her voice is gross.
I love you Hop Along
I love you Hop Alone
I am so annoyed that their fan base is mostly cocky straight dudes calling Frances "a female [insert male grunge lead]". UGH
EXACTLY!!!!
I love you Hop Along
