I love the lore of psychonauts. It has some real interesting stuff and cool concepts, but it also doesn't take itself seriously at the same time. Like the town of Shaky Claim (one, a great pun) It specialised in nail production, merely so Linda's battle had a reason for the abundance of them.

@@aaqka The pun is based on the phrase 'Shaky Claim' which means for something to be disputable, and to not be legally binding/ fact checkable.
For a town to be on a shaky claim, it would be that their residency is disputable, like they stole the land from the native people or something similar.

One thing to note is that you do actually get psychic powers from the inmates. Boyd has clairvoyance, and Edgar has the confusion bomb. In other words, the psitanium might have actually given them psychic abilities.

Could be fanfic fuel for the latest batch of psychonauts trainees, the thorny towers residents and how they cope with being offered a place in the psychonauts after discovering on accident when they return to the civilians lives they had before being institutionalized that they have psychic abilities
Afterall it wouldn't be the first time when a civilian psychic is recruited by psychonauts as hollis can attest to

@@noisyphilosopherkrk522 I had actually thought that the last residents of Thorny Towers would've actually been brought in to the Motherlobe some time after the events of the first game, and possibly given jobs as a result while they themselves learn how to safely use their psychic abilities.
Boyd Cooper would become the Motherlobe's Chief of Security. He's already well-suited for the role, and on the side, has taken his conspiracy theories and general ramblings and turned each of them into best-selling books, with his most successful being "The Milkman Conspiracy" Series.
Gloria von Gouton, now retired from professional acting, has taken up a new, more "quiet" job at the Motherlobe, teaching the new recruits how to create effective disguises when performing undercover investigations. When she isn't teaching her students acting and proper disguises, she can be found enjoying Helmut Fullbear's Psychodyssey with other Psychonauts
Edgar Teglee serves as a fitness coach and art teacher at Whispering Rock, but during the off-season will assist Boyd with night patrols. He's considered a gentle giant by the campers and younger Psychonauts, but isn't afraid to jump in to protect the kids as the Bull.
Like Edgar, Fred Bonaparte joins Milla and Sasha as a counselor at Whispering Rock, while at the Motherlobe he can be found at the bowling alley or helping others, usually Ford Cruller

The only problem I have with the timeline of Psychonauts is that, for the most part, none of the Inmates, well maybe with the exception of Gloria, seem to be old enough to have been at at the asylum when it closed down, which according to the timeline was in 1925, about 55 years ago. They’d all have to be over 70 years old, but Boyd’s and Edgar’s mindscapes hardly match that of someone from that era… At all. Particularly Boyd’s. Not even Loboto or Shegor seem THAT old.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  3 роки тому +112

I 100% agree. That is the biggest issue I have seen with the timeline. the major theory I have heard is that Oleander and Lobato moved into the ruins of the original Thorney Towers and either operated it off the books or restarted it under new management. Either way this part of the history was never explained and is frustrating lol.

    • @Rzulf4

Some say that psitanium considerably slows down aging, but this still doesn't make sense seeing that Boyd seemed to be a former mall cop and Edgar was a high school wrestler, both of which implied they were outside the Asylum in the 80's-90's. Edgar's graying in places, sure, but it just as well might be stress and psychological trauma. Gloria and Fred seem to have been in there much longer, however.

Who to say they incarcerated in thorny towers
They could've been from other other asylums and 'requisitioned' by oleander on 'official psychonauts business'
I could imagine the psychonauts being intertwined with the mental healthcare system where they help with patients in their recovery via careful mental modification and use this to train agents in how to do things
The asylums probably assumed oleander was going to use them to train the whispering rock campers only to discover oleander had a very different purpose in mind later
One can only the legislative s***storm that ensued for both parties in order to make sure something like that didn't happen again, would explain some of miss Hollis stress in psychonauts 2, it ain't just budget cuts but the issues caused by oleanders scheme

@SuperStoryMode The problem with this is that if you attempt to set fire to anything in the near proximity of Fred, he’ll comment that everything is fireproof, as many of the inmates that used to be there were fire starters.
From this comment alone, we can assume that Fred and Crispin have always been at Thorny Towers.
Doesn’t confirm anything for the other inmates though.

My take on this is that the timeline as shown in the game is wrong in-universe--either by mistake, or the dates were deliberately changed to hide shady stuff, like the fact that the residents of Thorney Towers were never rescued--the town was just flooded and the remaining citizens were left stranded there. The timeline that was written was deliberately warped to make people think the asylum had been abandoned ages ago, so no one could possibly still be there.

I have found something in control that I think is worth taking a look at. Just before the mail room that has the boss fight with the floating telekinetic hiss boss, if instead of going through the doors, you go up to the next floor there is a dry erase board with a whole story written on it. At the end, it seems that Dr. Darling does not know who wrote this, but has would like for them to meet in his office. The story talks about golden helmets that take you to other worlds and things getting weird but then they get used to it, and even turn on those with the helmets. You have to aim your gun to even read it, with so much writing is so crammed into the space. It's near an audio player of a radio station.

What actually causes psychic powers in the game? Ford Cruller mentions that Psitanium focuses and amplifies 'psychic waves,' but no further explanation is given for why some individuals (and animals) have these 'waves' while others do not. Also, no explanation is given for how these powers are expressed.
My personal hypothesis: I think that psychic powers are caused by electrical impulses in the mind that are somehow released as energy (by some overdeveloped organ or mutated gene, I bet). I also think that Psitanium 'amplifies' these waves by introducing radiation or some other form of stimuli that continues to overdevelop or energize this energy-releasing ability.

As far as I know that topic hasn't been explored in the game. Maybe in Psychonauts 2 since some of it takes place in the psychonauts headquarters.

From what I understood, psitanium didn't make unstable people more unstable, but that normal people would start to develop mental health problems, thus the tower to deal with the increased number of patients.
It also didn't help the asylum's case it started receiving people from outside the town to treat people.
In the end, the town got destroyed and the asylum abandoned.
What's weird is that the asylum got closed 30+ (40 or 50... I can't remember) years before the events of psychonauts.
I might have that information wrong cause that would mean the residents of the tower been there... for a long while.
But yeah, if you are a person with psychic abilities, then the stone increases your aptitude.

Ford Crueller did mentioned that Psitanium makes psychics more psychic, but also made unstable people more unstable. The tree trunk in the parking lot has the timeline of events for the area. It closed in 1925 and the story takes place in 1980. Honestly this timeline of how the patients got there still confuses me.

I think my favorite aspects regarding the counselors is the fact that they _do_ all have their own fair share of struggles and complexes-as nearly all adults do, no life is without trauma in some form or another. You could very easily see a plot focusing on Milla as a villain, with the psitanium amplifying her protective tendencies to a dangerous level. Or with Sasha, turning his desire to have things under control into an Orwellian scheme.
However… those two have matured healthily. They turned their past struggles into a productive direction, “moved on” while not suppressing and bottling up.
Oleander never found resolution with his traumatic childhood. Instead, he buried it under his machismo and warlike persona (itself a lie after his failure with the military). They all had their share of trauma, but he was the only one who had never resolved it-making him the prime victim for psitanium poisoning.

I think you got confused by the fact it's followed by an "S" sound in the "Psychic Summer Camp" part of the name.
