I think Ceaser's death acted as a bit of a turning point for the series. It was the first major death where the character who dies doesn't get to say goodbye to the other characters before passing
Not really he gave his goodbye to Joseph by screaming before getting crushed which Joseph heard. It doesn't help that Caesar's death only happened because Caesar got triggered at Joseph for no reason.

I don't know why I didn't realize how fitting Giorno's reaction to his win against Diavolo is. He lost two people he cared about, and also Abacchio, within the span of a few weeks.. at the age of 15. The youngest JoJo, and he goes through the roughest shit. And when it's over He's stunned that he's even alive. His first mentor. Dead, and technically by his own hand.
I'd argue Danny was the first major death in JoJo because not only did it act as a reason for us to despise Dio but also represented the death of Jonathan's innocence.
Fr tho, the second he started talking, I wanted him to stop, he was so happy about what he would do after but it was so obvious what was about to happen.
@Kakatte Koi! Are you saying Dire isn't a major death? He invented the Thunder Cross Split Attack! The perfect mix of attack and defence! It's the perfect stratagem!
Narancia's death is even more tragic when you think how much he wanted to go home, but died far away from it, not only physically but spiritually as well. He couldn't die in his own body, the home of his soul. This makes Giorno's promise to bring him back home hit harder than it should. Specially when we see the orange vines growing around him. Rest in peace, you magnificent bird.

Not to mention its a very meaningful death. Though its brief and Danny wasnt really a character, it was a perfect way to showcase Dio's cruelty. How far he'd go to hurt Jonathan. Of course its Dio kissing Erina that actually pushes him over the edge. Rip Danny.

One of my favorite minor antagonists death in part 5 was Illuso's. He had just stopped Purple Haze, and was about to shove the stand's arm into the mirror, he has a relief moment as he sees the light of victory right in front of his eyes, only to realize the light was from a train about to crush him. As he sees the capsule break all of his hope dissappears and turns into confusion, desesperation and sorrow, as he questions: Why? He had escaped the mirror, he sacrificed his arm, but he then realizes he was just delaying a gruesome death. His metabolic functions stop, all has dissapeared but pain & as he loses his face to Purple Haze's beating, he is left unrecognizable, and after all members of his team pass away, he is forgotten entirely, leaving nothing behind but a dark past, a murder case that will never be solved, and a life full of bad decisions. Edit: Wow, 191 likes, i'm glad y'all enjoyed my breakdown of Illuso's death. As always, stay fresh cheesebags!
Johnny, The Tormentor What's even worse is that somewhere(I think in the Purple Haze light novel), it states that before his death, Illuso regretted every bad decision he made.
@@kaedenle except for the fact that the dead relative story is within the manga and not the anime. The anime was the one who made Fugo a sexual assault victim. Manga > Anime when considering canon
Kars is basically functionally dead. Though tbh I wonder what would happen if he landed on a planet that happened to be capable of supporting life. Would he leave hibernation, or would he be so mentally broken that he'd just continue to be a statue? These are the real questions.
Felt even worse in the anime, because after waiting for a week crying over polnareff "death", you are happy to find out he was saved just to then remember iggy was gravely injured and see him die. A literal rollercoaster of emotion.
@@collax2613 For me, OVA felt WAYYY worse to me than the Anime I mean it's just the expression and face he made when he died, it felt even worse knowing that he was clueless.
Narancia is a character I didn't really care for back when I read the manga, but I've grown to like him so much more since the anime adaptation started airing... It's gonna be really rough to see his dead animated.
Across the parts I've seen I have to say I feel as though the best death had to be Shigechi's in part 4. It's an incredibly good combination of both types mentioned, you watch him struggle to get away from Kira, severely injured, and when it reaches the point where he believes he's safe it's suddenly turned on its head, and he's blown out of existence. It's equally slow, painful and tragic, but also manages to simultaneously be instantaneous and unfair. On top of that it's balanced with seeing his great change in character being suddenly cut short, with Shigechi being introduced as this selfish brat, and then growing in such a short time that his last thoughts and intentions are of protecting his family and town. He's a character who in no way deserves to die or has anything that would make him a more likely target than any of the rest of the cast, he's just a child even, and he's killed by sheer bad luck, making it incredibly tragic.
The series' many deaths make us appreciate every character as they could go at any time in any chapter. So I guess that means we should really be *Grateful* about these *Deaths*
Honestly, both Iggy and Kakyoin’s deaths were probably some of the ones that hit me the hardest, Kakyoin being my second or third favorite JoBro, and Iggy just being a fantastic character. But the deaths fit their characters. Iggy’s whole arc is about him originally not caring for the Crusaders or anyone really, but then after the Pet Shop fight, he does care. And thus, sacrifices himself to save Polnareff’s life against Vanilla Ice. And Kakyoin wanted his honor back for being lied to by DIO, and is so close to winning against him, but DIO could stop time. But even after he’s donuted and crashes into a waterfall, he still wants his friends to win, so with his dying breath, he gives Joseph a message through his final Emerald Splash. Iggy dies caring about his friends, and Kakyoin dies still believing in them.
You said how Araki turned death into something more cruel and realistic, but he did also do so with another part of the story: The relationship and conflict between the opposing parties. 1: Jonathan is the perfect Gentleman, while Dio is the Enemy of Mankind. 2: Again the opponent is an Enemy of mankind, but Joseph is not as purely good as Jonathan. 3: This time, it's a delinquent Jotaro against a reawakened Dio, who doesn't seem to want to destroy humainty anymore, but is still definitely a threat to our society. 4: Now it gets interesting. Our Protagonists are slightly delinquent, a bit more "good" than Jotaro, but for the first time, the enemy is a human. A Psychopath. but a human nonetheless. 5: Gang Members against Gang members, so basically both sides are criminals. As you surely noticed, which each part, the distinction between Good and Evil becomes less clear, as both sides get closer to each other.
Part 7: People with good intentions who tries to do good things vs A dude with good intentions that does bad things In part 7 you can even make a case that the villain had better motives than the heroes, but made bad choices
zen0524 Well yeah he feels terrible about ruining his brother's life and wants to make up for it and basically goes insane in achieving heaven. Poor Pucci
Yeah, I was crying as much as Narancia was. I wasn’t crying like how i usually did-silent-but as soon as these deaths came on, i bawled like a baby, like I just lost a friend all of the sudden.
As soon as abbachio died and Narnancia asked if they were just gonna leave him there I had to skip the rest of the episode and spent the rest of my life fucking crying
i absolutely love this video, it really made me understand why deaths in JoJo's generally hit me much harder than from any other work of fiction. great work man
spoiler for those who havent read part 6: I think jotaro's death was really interesting. From his introduction, he's been viewed as a total badass who cant possibly lose, completely demolishing all the enemies that get in his way and defeating dio with a somewhat asspull-ish revelation of being able to use time stop and throughout parts 4 and 6, hes still established as one of the strongest characters as we see how the others react to him and fear him. however in part 6 we start to see some weakness in our badass, now he has a daughter that he needs to protect. In his fight with Johngalli A and Pucci, its foreshadowed that his greatest downfall would be his carelessness when trying to protect those he loves. to protect jolyne from johngalli's bullets, he put himself in a situation where pucci could attack him, telling him the words "you were one step too late". later, at the end of the part, jotaro once again hears those words when he tries to protect jolyne from the thrown knives, triggering his PTSD and distracting him, leaving him not enough time to kill pucci in his time stop. His character arc in really neat, in part 3 he was your typical cool and unfazed protagonist, and although its hinted that he does have a caring side, we dont see much of it. fast forward to the end of part 6, as pucci stated, "your daughter is your weakness", a detrimental realization that killed the majority of the main cast.
I just finished part one yesterday, and i enjoyed (mostly because i didn’t excpect it to be only 9 episodes, and it had faster pacing then expected) I’ll be back to watch the rest once i catch up. To people who have not seen part 5 like, you can safely watch until 10:20 Only spoilers for part 1 are present. I look forward to see what part 2 has in store for me.
I think he means mechanically uninteresting. Zeppelli was awesome as a character, but he wasn't exactly novel or groundbreaking, and his status as a mentor basically sealed his fate from the start.
Another thing that made Narancia’s death so heart breaking, was that right before he died, he finally started to dream and think for himself. He had always just followed orders and never really thought for himself. The moment he finally starts to dream, and finally has something to fight for other than the loyalty to his team and simply because he was told to, he was killed off screen and so suddenly. He never got to see his own dreams through, and at such a young age. Too young, in fact, he barely even got to live his life.
I thought the main reason Narancia died was because in the panic of switching bodies, Diavolo wanted to get rid of who he thought was the biggest threat - Giorno - but Narancia was just the unlucky guy in his body. Still no thematic reliance but also reinforces again how Diavolo would kill without a second thought ("hey, what if this isn't Giorno?") to protect himself.
This really just got to me on how crazy it is they changed up with death or defeat in the JoJo series, such as: Part 1 & 2: Emotional Deaths(Ex. Jonathan, Zeppeli, Caesar) Part 3 & 4: Forfeiting/Retirement(Ex. Usually ends up with opponents cowering away or forfeiting surviving their battles with punches or knockouts) Part 5 & 6: Brutality and Lethal Deaths(Ex. Giorno causing Polpo’s death, Sorbet/Gelato’s death, Abbachio, Narancia, Diavolo, and entire JoJo cast of Part 6 dying at the end) Really interesting of how Araki changed up the acts of deaths and fights throughout the series
Dude this whole video is like....striking a nerve. Both in terms of remembering these characters deaths and just the reality that we’re all going to die one day and it’s not going to mean anything. A video is definitely done right when it’s giving me an existential crisis lmao, great video my guy.
I think what made Jonathan's death more impactful was Dio's reaction to his death and how it caught him off guard. It was as if Dio viewed Jonathan as an immortal, unable to die, and overcome any and all obstacles in his way. It was like a kid finally realizing the meaning of death and understanding it for the first time.
His death was really a shocker to me. Never thought he was gonna die like that. (Too bad we're gonna have to go through a hiatus before we know what happened to you know who)
I like this, but I think it will be better if you also talk about the Rolling Stones arc. Because... you know what happened there. Also the way it's actually the last arc in Vento Aureo (well, epilogue if I remember correctly) makes it hit so hard. Edit: The arc is called Sleeping Slaves, my bad.
How death evolution works in Jojo, but summarized: Killing a dog --> Killing several Dogs --> Forgots to kill the rock dog in part 8 --> No more killing in part 9.
Bruno is a good example of a "fake out" death, because it doesn't take time to set in the death before it reverses it. When Avdol dies the first time, it's already set it stone, and by the time he's back, we already got over his loss. Also because Bruno had a good reason to come back to life, with Giorno's ability, and Avdol's is shit lmao "Nah bro the bullet didn't hit me, I just fell asleep"
I hadn't been that scared of King Crimson until narancias death, he'd just explained his goals and wishes and what he wants to do after this and go to school, when all of that was cut short in a single moment. Years of dreams can be cut off in what feels like a single moment and that's what made me realize how terrifying king crimson is.
While I agree that death felt the most realistic in part 5 until that point, fate is still a very big thing in JoJo. And while Abbachio and Naranchia die relatively quickly and seemingly without progressing the story, we know they died because Mista changed fate by stopping Rolling Stones. It's also the reason why Bucciarati is revived and why Diavolo is beaten at the end. Death is heavily bound to fate in JoJo and most things happen for a reason in the series.
Well this gave me a much better understand of why Narancia's death makes me feel so much more bitter than others in JJBA. Partially it was how much I liked his character but understanding that it didn't contribute anything and that it truly was meaningless makes perfect sense of why it's just so damn sad. Good video.
PART 6,7 and 8 SPOILERS My favorite death would have to be jotoros. When i first read it I thought jotaro saving jolyne was stupid because pucci will just immediately kill her. Now i feel that It was touching that even in that situation he was hopeful that saving jolyne would work out. My least favorite would be johnnys. Why did araki feel that was nessesary to kill him? Oceaniz what is your thoughts on it?
@@messyroommate6691 yeah they are pretty similar, its just that johnny having a shitty life makes it alot hurt more (jotaro and joylne also kinda got revived at the end). Idk i just wanted johnny to have a better life.
Johnny is the Steelball version of Johnattan. He was going to die no matter what. Remember what Pucci said about Gravity? Weird shit happens will always happen to stand users that's how the world works.
I dont think a death being realistic necessarily equates to how well written it was. Abbachios death was phenomenally written because of the way it tied up his character arc, not because it was "instant" or "had no function". Narancias death on the other hand, much like Avdol (except arguably even worse), simply didn't have much of an impact on the reader due to how sudden (or realistic) it was. We don't get to properly process his death so by the end, it didn't really mean anything to us. If the actual characters dont have time to lament Narancias death due to the danger at hand, why should we? The reason the first two deaths were not good in Phantom Blood was simply because we werent invested in the characters, it is really as simple as that. Jonathans death on the other hand Id argue is still one of the greatest death scenes in the entire series right up there with the likes of Gyro and Abbachio.
I'd have to disagree. I thought Narancia's death was done really well. I love how moments before it happens we get a monologue of what he plans to do when everything is over and we have some nice hope, then it happens and even us the readers are left confused. You do get to see the characters lament the death, especially Giorno noting that his body is an empty shell and all he can do is return his own soul into it, plus turning the body into flowers. The reason no one completely stops is cause they know Diavolo is on the move and letting their guard down will result in another loss. Narancia was one of my favorites so this scene really hit me.
AFAIK Avdol was supposed to die when he got shot, but fans asked Araki to bring him back and so he then died like that the 2nd time. I dont remember where I read it though.
I agree and disagree because Abbacchio's death may have been approached more masterfully, I think it was so beautifully done, but it didn't sadden me nearly as much as Narancia. I belive it depends on how much you are connected to the characters which decides our feelings towards them when they die. The way the death is handled can only amplify the emotion
I actually have a different reason why Jonathan’s death makes me feel sad (which I didn’t feel until reading Part 3). It was because (in the story) his death is useless. Jonathan died to stop Dio, but Dio came back even stronger than before in Stardust Crusaders, so his death was essentially meaningless. HE DIED FOR NOTHING. Correct come if I’m wrong, but I don’t think you see many “pointless” deaths in anime, so for me at least, that cut deep.
Also the fact that Dio gave life to his body in a messed up way makes it feel disgusting. Which makes Jotaro Wrecking Dio much more satisfying for the viewer
He did not die for nothing. Jonathan spent his last few moments in-between choking in his own blood a) making sure Erina would survive b) blow up the boat so that he and Dio sink and perish... the second part did not entirely work due to Dio's luck BUT in the entirety of part 3 his desecration allowed the Joestars to access their stand abilities AND his body was resisting Dio, downgrading his physical prowess and vampire powers (hence Dio's reliance on The World ...). So no. Jonathan pretty much gave his children the right tools to wreck DIO, even implicitly...
Why ya gotta do phantom blood like that, it is my favorite part, and that aint changin, and Jonathan is best boy, he deserves a hug...also Part 1 introduced speedwagon
I agree with pretty much all you said, but im still torn on Narancias death. I get your point, and thats realistic, but he was my favourite with Mista and his death was way too sudden for me. I would have prefered Fugo to die this way, but not my boy. If it was the intention of Araki to hurt his fans, he accomplished it.

Yes, no one should discuss anything further than what is animated, without babysitting those who haven't read a 30 year old work in it's entirety in a place where discussion of all things jojo is definitely meant to occur. It's strange. My dog died very recently due to having cancer and he would have suffer either through treatment or through cancer so my mom decided to have be put down to end his suffering. The description of how death was sudden and unfair really helped me in a way. It brings comfort to know that I'm not alone dealing with grief and that people very much understand its pain. Thank for for helping me not feel alone in this world.
Abbacchio's death hurt me man. Don't you just hate it when you have a jerk character that you hate at first, then they grow on you a bit, and then die. That's how it was with Abbacchio and Caesar. I swear I flooded my house with tears.
Well, Narancia’s death does have two possible uses: to remove his powerful ability from the team’s arsenal, and to return Giorno to his original body. Though, I do like how his death was explained in a functional way within the story- because the enemy didn’t want him around due to how much of a nuisance he was to them- and yet basically served no real functionality from a large cause-and-effect standpoint. His death hit me hard. I remember reading how he wanted to go back to school and resume life after it would all be over. His optimism hurt for me because I already knew he was gonna die (I’m stupid so I got it spoiled), but it hurt even worse when I realized how sudden his death was. He didn’t get to pursue a real education like he wanted to. He didn’t get to celebrate victory with everyone else. *He didn’t even get to say goodbye.* I’ll continue with some other thoughts as a response to this.
Of course we gotta talk about Caesar’s death. It was powerful, noble, moving, while still being functional. Caesar was a big dummy-head for wanting to fight the Pillarmen head-on, and he was quite arrogant at times. He came to accept his death, at least enough to throw the baton to Joseph. It’s as if Araki is restating something that could be interpreted from William A Zeppeli’s death, but this time more effectively- **fate is cruel.** Seeing Lisa Lisa break down was the final blow that made me cave in. Maybe it’s because of how strong she is, always being a bit hard on the boys during training and setting an example for how powerful they can become. As Wamuu drove home, Caesar’s death was one of great honor. Though he pledged to be the one to end it all and avenge his forefathers, he came to terms with his own downfall. In his last moments, he threw away his usual pride and carved his legacy by becoming a support for his friend. His final pride was being a team player, an unfortunate sacrifice for a greater cause, and I think that’s beautiful.
To me, part 3’s deaths weren’t consistently good or bad. I’d say for the most part, they were powerful and very emotional. However, there are some flaws to them. Let’s start with Avdol. I felt that his return was kind of... not cliche, exactly. Sort of... unrealistic, even with the excuse that they wanted to trick the enemy into believing the Crusaders lost some power. Now, when he died for the final time, it was kind of sudden as well. But what happened was that he sacrificed himself for the second and final time. I believe Meti covered this in a video? Avdol, despite saying to never turn back, making a pact for everyone to focus on their own survival, couldn’t bring himself to do nothing as Polnareff faced certain death. He was a mentor even in his last moment, as Polnareff realized... uh... lessons. My brain is starting to fry. So strangely enough, Avdol’s death didn’t make me cry. However, Iggy’s... oh god. It hurt so badly. I don’t really see Iggy’s death as a plot device except in the fact that it drove his character home and melted our hearts... painfully, as if it were with acid. Polnareff had already lost Avdol. Now he loses someone else, but even worse, he began to realize how little he had cherished him at all. Iggy was shown to be rude, cold, selfish, and not very friendly to anyone at all. He and Polnareff had a conflicting relationship. So why, why did Iggy give himself up for the sake of someone else, especially Polnareff? Because deep down inside, he never hated him. The absolutely horrifying and perilous nature of Part 3’s journey truly shows itself here, when all that could’ve been is lost. Kakyoin... oh boy. This death was really painful. He didn’t get to say goodbye to his parents, and he left so much behind. But now that I think about it, he didn’t really say goodbye to the Crusaders. His final message was a crucial contribution to their last remaining members’ victory against DIO. The only thing that I’d really complain about is the fact that he survived for an unrealistically long amount of time, and conveniently just long enough to realize DIO’s ability and then act to warn the others. Ah yeah, and Joseph’s resurrection was uh... kind of BS. But hey, glad to have him back. If only EVERYONE ELSE COULD’VE BEEN SAVED!!! .°(ಗдಗ。)°.

The problem is that most ppl hate shigechi

As you surely noticed, which each part, the distinction between Good and Evil becomes less clear, as both sides get closer to each other.
and then part 6 prisoners against a priest with a so-called fucking pure motive

spoiler for those who havent read part 6:
I think jotaro's death was really interesting.
I just finished part one yesterday, and i enjoyed (mostly because i didn’t excpect it to be only 9 episodes, and it had faster pacing then expected)

Greto daze
Narancia’s death was absolutely soul crushing, he was my favorite character from part 5 and he died in such a tragic way
I thought the main reason Narancia died was because in the panic of switching bodies, Diavolo wanted to get rid of who he thought was the biggest threat - Giorno - but Narancia was just the unlucky guy in his body.
Still no thematic reliance but also reinforces again how Diavolo would kill without a second thought ("hey, what if this isn't Giorno?") to protect himself.
Yeah I thought the same
nope, diavolo killed narancia deliberately because of his radar stand
Boi Araki thought while writing stone ocean that it would be cool af if they just went overboard with the oofs
how araki writes death is one of the best things of jojo tbh.
This really just got to me on how crazy it is they changed up with death or defeat in the JoJo series, such as:
Part 1 & 2: Emotional Deaths(Ex. Jonathan, Zeppeli, Caesar)
Part 3 & 4: Forfeiting/Retirement(Ex. Usually ends up with opponents cowering away or forfeiting surviving their battles with punches or knockouts)
Part 5 & 6: Brutality and Lethal Deaths(Ex. Giorno causing Polpo’s death, Sorbet/Gelato’s death, Abbachio, Narancia, Diavolo, and entire JoJo cast of Part 6 dying at the end)
Really interesting of how Araki changed up the acts of deaths and fights throughout the series

Dio's reaction also to me, sad. Because for the first time he actually felt worried about Jonathan like a brother but it was too late
Your accent and pronutiantion is lovely

It was the most crushing for me too. His and gyro's deaths
i came here for an analysis and i ended up having an existencial crisis
still good vid
Narancia's death was meaningful and purposeful. It lead them to realize that Diavolo is one of their bodies...
Good video.

Johnny is the Steelball version of Johnattan. He was going to die no matter what. Remember what Pucci said about Gravity? Weird shit happens will always happen to stand users that's how the world works.
Oh great! Thanks for reminding me of the sadness of those part 5 deaths
You spoiled my best friend about Gyro and he's in tears 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

AFAIK Avdol was supposed to die when he got shot, but fans asked Araki to bring him back and so he then died like that the 2nd time. I dont remember where I read it though.
I agree and disagree because Abbacchio's death may have been approached more masterfully, I think it was so beautifully done, but it didn't sadden me nearly as much as Narancia. I belive it depends on how much you are connected to the characters which decides our feelings towards them when they die. The way the death is handled can only amplify the emotion
"People,just,die."
The most truthful words anyone on this damn planet has ever said.
@@linusmota9712 Not only that, but Jotaro also split Dio up the middle the same way Jonathan did
As much as i hate DIO, i gotta admit i feel bad when he was "crying" in pain.
So is Joseph, Jotaro, Josuke, Giorno, and Jolyne considered "nothing"?
THANK YOU for chase, not what I'm here for but still, a pleasant surprise.
Why ya gotta do phantom blood like that, it is my favorite part, and that aint changin, and Jonathan is best boy, he deserves a hug...also Part 1 introduced speedwagon

the Narancia remembered me the Avdol from Stardust arc, so unpredictable and shocking
So sudden and reminded us how sudden death is.
Out of all anime death in jojo is symbolic and beautifully written like in Cesars “His body may be gone but his soul lives on Rest In Peace Cesar Zeppeli “you will be missed you handsome devil
The characters start talking about the future
Anime fans/watchers: oh no
Character: dies
Anime watcher: oh no
It's strange.
I was wondering why the deaths in golden wind hit me harder than all the other parts. Thanks for making this video
*He didn’t even get to say goodbye.*
I’ll continue with some other thoughts as a response to this.
It’s as if Araki is restating something that could be interpreted from William A Zeppeli’s death, but this time more effectively- **fate is cruel.**
Seeing Lisa Lisa break down was the final blow that made me cave in.
If only EVERYONE ELSE COULD’VE BEEN SAVED!!! .°(ಗдಗ。)°.
Absolutely fantastic analysis. Instantly subscribed. Keep it up
*me before watching the video* : "I'm ready, I'm not gonna tear up when he mentions Abbacchio"
