Great review. When I was looking for an EV, I found both the interior and exterior looks of the ID.3 a bit bland. As soon as I saw the Born, I knew it was much more 'me'. Happy with my choice, after a couple of months - averaging around the 4 mark and love the driving characteristics. I would agree with the comments about haptic buttons though!
Hallelujah, at last a common sense objective review of the id3 and Born, without all the opinionated anti VW rhetoric. Thank you Richard for a useful comparison. As an id3 owner of 22 months I almost entirely agree with your pros and cons, our vents are at crazy angles though. For anyone undertaking a lot of night driving, id3 matrix lights are untouchable, all cars should have these. I have also regularly used an MG5 and interestingly found the miles per kwh to be similar, averaging 3.5 to 4.1, winter and summer, but with the id3 slightly ahead, also delivering a more sophisticated comfortable drive, in my opinion. MG are great value for money workhorses, You get what you pay for. We have really enjoyed the experience with the id3 but we are hoping to change to a Renault megane etech, drove one last Sunday, would like to see you review this soon. The main reason for the change is towing capability, it also has great Google software. And before the MG fans start shouting MG4, 500 kg towing capacity is not worth the expense of a towbar. You get what you pay for.
I appreciate the point on the matrix headlights; however, they are no longer available due to the chip shortage. You can also only get the ID. 3 in the life 58kWh spec for the time being from factory, whereas the Born has 3 specs, two battery sizes, and an E boost option. Therefore, the Cupra wins it for me due to the better interior (I have owned both cars). Must say the review is great Richard 👍🏻
You make a good and valid point about lane keep assist, I've lost count of how many times it's tried to push me into oncoming traffic on narrow country roads. I also think the regenerative breaking settings should be retained when the vehicle is turned off.
Even though I had heard that the VW is not so great when it comes to their software, Richard's wife still chose the correct car for the family situation. I feel that the review gives me a certain incontestability to be confident anywhere I would choose to venture forth. Another Superb review from RSEV... Note these cars are not available in Canada or the USA but we do need some competition over here too...
I have tested both several times and I came to the same conclusion as you do,- namely that the ID is more quiet and in my opinion 20% better car. I ordered mine in December and got it 3 weeks ago and I am super happy🙌🏽🙌🏽
The lane keep assist on my Evoque can be switched on or off from a steering wheel button and it remembers the setting next time. It also only comes on when you go above 40 mph - seems a good solution to me. 🙂
ID3 is the car I'd choose for the highlights pointed out. As for the rear windows getting dirty. The solution is easy. Clean the car often, I see so many dirty cars on the road yet a simple car wash would make a difference.
Recently started watching the channel, have a Born arriving soon (at the port last week!) And have watched all the reviews, nice to see someone pointing out flaws and nitpicks but not harping on about them for ages!
In terms of looks, I think the ID.3 has started to grow on me. The Cupra just seems too overstyled on the front for my liking, whereas I think VW went the opposite direction and just smoothed things out a bit too much. If I had to pick one (which I probably wouldn't as I'd probably go for the MG4), I'd pick the VW
I’d definitely be lining up those vents my OCD wouldn’t let me leave it, I definitely prefer the Cupra styling and think I’d get used to the steering wheel with time.
Great review ! I was actually expecting a slating of the iD3 but you’re right the matrix headlights are reason enough to choose the ID3, our Max does have adaptive damping ( DCC ) we’ve had ours 14 months now and still love it .
And how many Keiths have you had saying "where can you go in that?! I couldn't be bothered stopping. My Skoda Octavia diesel does 500 miles" yes but you yourself Keith can't go 500 miles without at least a few breaks AND probably only drive 500 miles once a year when going on holiday. And, you have to queue at petrol stations all the time. Drives me mad! (Coming from a guy with a V8 Range Rover! I'm totally sold on electric vehicles and like the Born and ID3. I just can't afford one yet otherwise, id be straight down to the showroom)
I straight swapped my 12 months old 14k miles max for a V2 E-Boost a month ago. I dont know if the Cupra having the newer parts and coming as standard with V3 software but its more efficient and the ride, brakes and performace is much better. Matrix LED lights are great when the lights are clean but otherwise people flash you, Born has auto dipping LED lights. If they added profiles to the ID3 so you could set the suspension / seats to your requirements it would be fantastic.
ID3 lane assist activates above 40mph, not at all speeds. But yes I agree it would be better if you could turn it off permanently:) The lack of Aircon in the back is a fair comment to. Problematic with our kids sometimes - makes it important to remember to precondition it, when I find it doesn't take long to cool the whole car.
Nice review and comparation between the born and id3. The ID3 is in my opinion a bit to plasticy and the software is still not good enough. Hope the facelift 2023 will be a bit refined.
Going into the cars management via the obd port you can switch off permanently the lane keep assist and you can still switch on in car infotainment but when you switch off the car and back on the LKA will be OFF!!
Very interesting vlog and comparison. Personally I do generally like seat stuff out of the VAG best. My leaf has stuff that resets each time. So did the ioniq. It is annoying. And like you say I’m sure they could sort it. Oh and the air vents. Sooooo low down I do like air on my face at face level. As for the vents being inline ? Lol mine are all different 😂. Soz. Best wishes.
I had a Skoda for two months, infotainment was crap. But on the steering wheel it had a little wheel (for lack of a better word) for volume up down and could click it to pause, worked well. Has the cupra got the same? A pause button, skip button , volume controls and a max blower button must be easy to find/press. What’s it got?
I think the lane assist being at least two button presses deep in the menu is now the regulations on all newly designed models. Has to default to be on too everytime you restart…..it’s infuriating but it’s not specific to these cars. The Tesla doesn’t have this because the it’s not a brand new model it’s a refresh. Model Y was designed before the legislations came in. Adaptive suspension is an option on the id3 and standard on the Max model. The comparison on efficiency would be more accurate if the ID3 was on the 3.0 software that all the Borns ship with. Great comparison video 👍🏻
I’ve ordered an eboost 58KW Born. Should be arriving in January. Looking forward to it. I think there are definitely some pros to the id3 but I just can’t take the styling. Not for me. It seems like a good software update could fix a lot of issues. Sadly doesn’t seem like they are addressing them. I’ll keep my fingers crossed but won’t hold my breath.
I think you are “annoyed” by far too much things…. I just cannot understand all this amount of “hate” for the steering wheel buttons. Yes, they’re different, so you just need a bit of time to get USED.

i have id3 and i tougt that steering wheel controls on that car are most annoying in the world but aparently Cupra has found away to make them even worse
All in all I prefere the design of the ID.3 over the Born. The Born looks like a Peugot to me. But as a tall person the armrests in the ID.3 are horrible. It is located to close to the body. I've got a better chance using the passenger sides armrest, than the driversseat one. The Born had a much better armrest for me. Even my wife whos only 175 liked the Born armrests better than the ID.3. The Born we tested handled better than the ID.3 as well.
With American States, and now countries (Australia), starting to ban the sale of petrol cars by 2030-2035, do you think the sale of new petrol cars will start to stall soon? Because people within a few years are likely to be buying a new car with potentially no resale value. I think people will at some point go for cars that they don't mind having to scrap when the time comes. But also, I don't think the 2nd hand market for EVs will be attractive, because there is a fair chance that they only come on sale if the battery is less good at holding a charge or the motor is degraded enough that it has over heating problems. Both even when EV is in mass production I suspect will still be too expensive average Joe.
You’re years behind my friend… Already combustion cars depreciate more. No one wants them. I get asked to take a Range Rover in p/ex every day, but I don’t want them. Eve are better to drive. Cheaper to run. Better for the environment and especially local air quality. Last longer. Much simpler. Can be powered by the sun for gods sake. We’ll be laughing at how we managed to run complicated oil burners in a few years. Demand for Evs has rocketed because they are good and the sceptics are realising that. My business has thrived off the back of selling used Evs. Older or newer, they are simply better
Like you, there are things I'd go for on the ID3 and things on the Born. I like the looks of both, possibly slightly prefer the ID3. The black strip at the base of the windscreen is a little awkward, maybe go for a black one to hide that. The question is, I suppose, is it easier to get an ID3 and fit the suspension and steering from a Born, or get the Born and fit the steering wheel from the ID3. I'm joking of course. In reality, I'll be waiting until one of them comes into my budget and that will be the one! On the subject of OCD. I don't think I suffer with it as much as you and would probably not have noticed the vents until you pointed them out - thanks! My mild OCD kick in over stick on fakery such as mock carbon fibre!
Love the video Richard, great comparison. I drive an ID.3 Pro Performance and I love it. Can I ask where you got the front splitter and rear spoiler? They’re very subtle but do make a big difference. I enjoy your very honest videos, keep up the great work👍🏻
Is the road noise down to the types of tyre used as the cars are built on the same production line in Germany ? Everything has been mentioned in other reviews and I agree the missing rear air vents are a cost cutting exercise by VW group that is a shame. Perhaps a company will look at an after market rear air vent as I have an idea that might work using existing parts available on the market. More after market body parts and alloys would be nice for the Born as the ID3 cars have nicer alloys.
Both are poor choices due to limited range especially in the winter. Looking ahead why worry how much charging will cost from October onwards and possible power cuts buy an ice and save thousands of pounds.
In the winter my Tesla is preheated & defrosted before I even walk out the house, plus even with the new price cap from October it will still cost a third of the price of running an ice car with comparable performance. But each to there own & I guess you like being stuck in the past.
I definitely agree that we should be able to switch off the steering assist on minor roads. It can be really dangerous when driving on narrow country roads. My fiat 500 was trying to steer me into oncoming traffic. Really scary!
usually the id3 and cupra are just compared to the other electric competition. As a consumer I think the comparison should be about the car I’m coming out off vs the car I’m potentially going into . For example the id3 should be compared to the golf and the cupra born should be compared to the Leon . There’s next to nothing in comparison with these 2 cars , only the finer detail like comparing a golf and a Leon , which is fine but are they better than the cars they replace ? that’s what I want to know .
I don’t have a golf or a Leon because I wouldn’t want either if I had the privileged choice. They’re not the same cars so can’t really compare directly. I’ve done videos on petrol and diesel cost v electric and that’s the best I can do. What’s better to drive? Electric What’s better for the future? Electric What costs less to run? Electric Etc
Ive never noticed the vents. Thanks! I now need to un-notice them. To turn off he beeping when you press buttons "Cupra button" (bottom left) "sounds" then "Settings" its listed with a toggle on/off next to it.
Hi Richard, thanks for another very informative video. I really do like the authoritative and authentic presentation of your reviews as someone who has a huge experience of EVs. Road testers do not always highlight the strengths, weaknesses and practicalities of living with an EV on an everyday basis. I currently drive a BMW i3s but currently looking for an EV for longer distance use and with better range - my car is a 94ah. Whilst I admire the Tesla M3 I cannot connect with it emotionally and I following £10k of price increases this year it no longer delivers value to me. I am very interested in the Renault Megane E-Tech so am looking forward to an early review from yourself and how I compares with the Cupra Born and ID.3 - which I guess are it’s most direct competitors. I feel that the interior quality and ambiance of the interiors of all are going to be a let down compared with my Lodge interior i3 which also benefits from a glass sunroof. It seems that most new cars, Model 3 excepted, are quite gloomy inside - with a predominance of grey and black. I hope that you will have an opportunity to review a Megane shortly as I believe demonstrators will e arriving at dealers at the end of the month.
It is the small annoyances which make or break anything. I am glad that you pointed out the air vent and steering wheel issues because these things do matter to me too.
i wish there was an estate version of the ID.3; real frustration that everyone thinks if I want something good for family holidays I will be wanting an SUV. and while the ID.3 is bigger than our old golf, i want more boot space. it's not anywhere close to our 2004 VW Touran MPV built on the golf chassis
@@RSEV ID.4 is exactly the kind of SUv i don't want. I've encountered them in enough in Bristol to know they seems to block all light nearby, and are wide. I haven't checked out the ID.5 yet, maybe that is better. oh, and Buzz is (a) even wider and (b) even more expensive. pity
Been driving my cupra Born 58kWh for about 2 months now, totally agree on all the annoyances. u forgot about the audio tho, most cars dont get rear speakers as standard! And no lining in the door pockets.. Haptic buttons u get used to, lane assist i was thinking the same thing! Why not have the option to activate it from like 100km/h? It does that automatically from 60 km/h. Also notice the road noise, running continental wintertyres tho. What do u think the ID.3 has different in which makes it quieter? Currently upgrading my audio and installing a liner in the doorpockets. Looking for other upgrades to reduce road noise. U have any suggestions?

My business has thrived off the back of selling used Evs. Older or newer, they are simply better
Definitely the id3 for me.
Would be great to see this updated.
Cupra born easily the better one
Love the video Richard, great comparison. I drive an ID.3 Pro Performance and I love it. Can I ask where you got the front splitter and rear spoiler? They’re very subtle but do make a big difference. I enjoy your very honest videos, keep up the great work👍🏻
Lining up air vents slats? Strewth. Almost as bad as people moaning about old VW Golf volume control mark moving round, not staying vertical!
Completely agree about lane assist. My Ford stays off or on whichever way it was last time in the car. The Skoda had that ‘on as default’ issue too.
Richard can you do a review and test of MG4 for the price 25k it will shake up other manufacturers
also Renault Megan E Tech looks good for 40k
Both are poor choices due to limited range especially in the winter. Looking ahead why worry how much charging will cost from October onwards and possible power cuts buy an ice and save thousands of pounds.
Yawn. “Buy an ice”. Change nothing. Pollute the world.
Seriously, you’d still be on horse and cart if the world was like you
In the winter my Tesla is preheated & defrosted before I even walk out the house, plus even with the new price cap from October it will still cost a third of the price of running an ice car with comparable performance. But each to there own & I guess you like being stuck in the past.
I definitely agree that we should be able to switch off the steering assist on minor roads. It can be really dangerous when driving on narrow country roads. My fiat 500 was trying to steer me into oncoming traffic. Really scary!
I quite like the look of the Cupra. But it has the vw infotainment DNA which is utter garbage and the haptic touch crap
That car is actually cute compared to the CUPRA 🧡
However think CUPRA is for me in a way
usually the id3 and cupra are just compared to the other electric competition.
Electric
What’s better for the future? Electric
What costs less to run? Electric
Etc
I would buy the MG4 in fact I just have, and I have to say the dash on ID3 is crap much prefer the MG4 dash
Ive never noticed the vents. Thanks! I now need to un-notice them. To turn off he beeping when you press buttons "Cupra button" (bottom left) "sounds" then "Settings" its listed with a toggle on/off next to it.
Cool thanks will switch that off!
I dont like neither of them, especialy the interior,to old fashion
Cupra vents would deffo bug me as I also have OCD & agreed on stereo controls they also would be rather irritating.
We have ordered that exact spec, due Jan, to replace our E-Golf. Thanks for posting the review
The lane assist default to on is a requirement of euro ncap.
It is the small annoyances which make or break anything. I am glad that you pointed out the air vent and steering wheel issues because these things do matter to me too.
Still waiting 16 months on for my ID3 family pro performance spec
If I had to pick either it would be Cupra every time, just not in that colour.
Source for the spoiler you added on the ID3 Richard? 🤔
EVquip
i wish there was an estate version of the ID.3; real frustration that everyone thinks if I want something good for family holidays I will be wanting an SUV. and while the ID.3 is bigger than our old golf, i want more boot space. it's not anywhere close to our 2004 VW Touran MPV built on the golf chassis
ID4 ..? It’s massive and comparable to Touaran
@@RSEV ID.4 is exactly the kind of SUv i don't want. I've encountered them in enough in Bristol to know they seems to block all light nearby, and are wide. I haven't checked out the ID.5 yet, maybe that is better. oh, and Buzz is (a) even wider and (b) even more expensive. pity
Vents under seat to back
Correct. Also you can turn the beep off and make the lane assist stay off.
@@simonmackie3481 mmmm turn the beep off? Please tell......
U have any suggestions?
my 2014 zoe has 4 speakers, heat pump, elevator in front motor...
It is you, it is OCD! I would likely do the same lining up the vents.
I believe lane assist auto on is a legal mandate for all vehicles from 2022.
