  • Pamela Harriman was a wealthy country girl with big dreams. During a time when women only dreamed of equal opportunity, Pamela used her refined manners and seductive prowess to woo powerful men in high places. Her ambition was tantamount, and by entertaining romances with famous men, she climbed her way to the very top. She was, in every way, both a masterful businesswoman and a bewitching lover.

In WW2 Pamela dropped them for Britain, "entertaining" American politicians for her father-in-law Sir Winston Churchill.

I admire her for her ability to take charge of her life and determine her own path, especially decades before the '60s feminist movement. But yikes! Her habit of using people for her own ends---the sole purpose of which was to gain wealth and status---speaks of psychopathy. A complex personality.

I found it pathetic. She couldn’t make her successes without riding the coattails of another. And it was the rich. Did she ever truly love or live? Seems she was always looking for how rich she could become.

Women throughout the millenia have used their bodies to gain wealth and status. It's hardly admirable, and it's certainly nothing new.

Pamela Digby was born into a faded aristocrat family way out in the boonies. She was neither pretty nor educated. She was teased for being plump and for wearing bad clothes. Her birth, nevertheless, opened doors for her. Read Christopher Ogden's bio on this interesting woman, Life of the Party. She faked it until she made it, marrying well several times. She was close to the Clintons. She died a wealthy woman.

Whilst she might not have been one of the great beauties of her age, she knew how to please powerful men - and not in the typical way people assume. She knew how to entertain, make them feel at ease. I think she was a great listener; made them feel important and soothe their egos; knew how to prepare their favourite drinks and how to dress in a way that pleased them. I read she was skilled with gifts - picking out just the right cigarette case or some other charming item to please her current man. She most likely had an intelligent approach to everything, knew how to run a household - perfect home with flowers, dining table, wine cellar and foods - those sorts of things. Plus I would assume she had a soothing speaking voice that would relax a man as he unwound in her company - she'd take charge, where she was able, to deal with anything that was bothering him. There are many qualities that can make a woman who isn't a beauty knock out the prettier competition - I think Pamela was one of those well-rounded women - while her aristocratic and Churchill connections would make her attractive too. It isn't generally the most beautiful women who live the most successful lives.

Sexual attractiveness - plus being immensely capable in terms of knowing how to present well and run things. A man likes a woman who can make his domestic set-up as luxurious and agreeable as possible. You also need to be good at conversation and entertaining at an elite level - and particularly good at listening. Courtesans were very different from mere prostitutes. They were career women of a kind - and could be both very rich and immensely powerful with salons where they entertained political luminaries and aristocrats, etc...

@@bullirish By definition courtesans are prostitutes for wealthy men- neither sister was a courtesan which is having sex for money.
