The European hornet attacked the red wasp because hornets use smaller wasps as food for their larvae. The hornet will kill the red wasp, fly off with the protein laden thorax to the hornets nest and pass it to other hornets who will chew it up some more into a paste, and the wasp paste will be fed to the larvae (grubs) in the cells.

I saw two European hornets fall into the lake I was fishing in as they fought. I watched them in the water for over half an hour until the drifted out of sight , still fighting! They dont give up even while drowning!
Yeah, waaay better UFC. This was actual weapons based combat with the opponents fighting for their lives using each others' stingers. Like ancient Roman coliseum fights where they killed each other using various weapons at their disposal.
That hornet is probably going to feel the effects of that sting and bite for a bit. When a bee stings it'll leave a pheromone scent that'll alert the whole hive. Red wasps can not only sting but can also leave a pheromone that'll like the bees also alert the whole hive. Now if there was a nest of them that European hornet would not be so lucky.
But let's not forget that the hornet is very strong and that hornet also has a hive full of its team and he can send destress calls but not through pheromones. So he may not be screwed.
The hornet, unfortunately, acts much more carefully when within the nest area. There the hornet isn't careful, because it "knows" the wasps only respond to the pheromone when the nest is threatened. In this case, no wasp will help against the hornet. Wasps really only use the alarm pheromone when the hornet attacks the nest or its entrance, which never happens because hornets tend to avoid nests, or at least prevent the garrison wasps from attacking.
It's like these wasps have some kind of psychotic need to kill each other for no reason whenever spotted. It wasn't so long ago that I once found myself accidentally interrupting a fight between a red wasp and a yellow jacket over on a sidewalk. The red wasp ended up flying away while the yellow jacket had started walking off _after_ having been completely bisected.
The reddish wasp is either Polistes carolina or Polistes rubiginosus--two very similar species that essentially need examination under a microscope to separate. The hornet is, of course, Vespa crabro. True hornets will use other wasps (and bees and many other insects) as prey to feed their own larvae, after making a "meatball" out of the thoracic muscles (which power the wings and legs) of the prey. In Asia, large hornets even use smaller hornets as prey!
I like how the stray ants are just randomly wandering around. They might be looking for an opening to nail one or both of the wasps, but I'm not seeing the numbers of ants building up. If those kids kept watching they might notice a rather interesting ant trail start making it's way towards these two, ants are unafraid of wasps or hornets and would happily eat both of them! OM NOM NOM!
I searched and searched for a hornet vs wasp 1 on 1 like the book hornet vs wasp and ive found it it is the fight you suddenly found this and recorded it just made my day
I can't even watch the video with out wanting to flee, I actually started to rise from my chair around 40 seconds when the yellow jacket started flying and making a buzz, my brain is like "NO!, GET AWAY!"
I have no idea what you guys are doing to get them to attack, but I have numerous paper wasps species around my home, including the red paper wasp, and have yet to get stung by any of them. Paper wasps are some of the more docile social wasps, yellowjackets are rude and short tempered and hornets are far worse than both (and aren't even native to America). Most, especially paper wasps, can remember individuals, and will either not bother you if they know you and you don't bother them, or show extra aggression if you were ever a threat. They'll also probably not like you if you remind them of someone they don't like. Red paper wasps are among the more aggressive ones, but they are still nicer than a yellowjacket and way nicer than any hornet. Personally, I was rooting for the paper wasp, even though it definitely lost. Those hornets don't belong here and are more likely to be a nuisance. Red paper wasps may be abnormally mean but hornets are just bullies.
@@chitinskin9860 First half is true, most paper wasps are peaceful. But I would be VERY careful with saying "way nicer than any hornet", because all wasps vary in aggressivity. European hornets in my country (Central Europe) are incredibly docile, and I don't think your wasps are "way nicer" than them. Is it possible to touch the nests of your Polistes wasps without taming them?
I just love how there is a few gnats circling them just watching. Im imagining the gnats are there to hype up the fighters. Or there acting as the refs...
European Hornets are much more aggressive than the Red Wasps. Red Wasps look ferocious and pack a powerful sting, but generally will not attack people, as would a Yellow Jacket or Bald Faced Hornet. Red Wasps are known to build giant Super Cell nests underneath expressway bridges and over passes. A European Hornet resembles a giant Yellowjacket and has the same wavering flight pattern as a Yellowjacket. In my experience, they aren't nearly as aggressive as Bald Faced Hornets, which will attack if one gets within 50 yards of the nest. The sting of a European Hornet is nasty, though and they will approach humans if they smell perfume, cologne, or if there is food around. I have not observed this behavior from Red Wasps.
In my days I've seen a yellow jacket brutally rip shreds out of a fly. Was almost like it was raping it with its stinger. But nothing beats the time I saw a Wasp and a Spider fight over a dead Bee . The Wasp picked up the Bees corpse, was finding it difficult to carry whilst flying, accidently flew into a Spiders web, and just like that it was on. They went at it fucking hard. But by the end of it they both died due to the venom and butchering of eachother. The metaphor was like "you died for something that was already dead".
AA Barbone i beleve you,i onse saw two spiders fighting over a dead ant, while i was watching they got frightent and one of them dropped it and then i held it for them so one of them can take and on end one that held it at the first place took it
