Nixon looks better and better over time especially compared to many of our leaders today. I've had enough charisma. I'll take competence and intelligence any day. Nixon, now more than ever.

Charisma, at least partially, can be defined as the ability to capture people's attention. For better or worse. It is about the last/worst reason to choose any kind of "leader ".

What I love about Nixon is that he was incredibly articulate, yet plain spoken at the same time. A real class act.
He was the respectable, and sometimes rare, combination of being extremely well-educated and articulate but not being pretentious or condescending. We should all try to be like that.

My father was a true conservative and a very astute political junkie. He always said that someday we would all recognize what a great president Nixon was.
I find it astounding he felt he had to resign. Yes he made an error of judgement as we all do but he was an extremely descent man and a good leader. A certain other individual who has made many errors " we know who " feels he should get another crack. God help the West. He wouldn't be fit to shine President Nixon's shoes.

As a liberal I can recognize what a great president he was and I'd vote for him if he was still alive. I believe his sincere interest in world peace and in improving the standard of living for all Americans could greatly reduce the rift between left and right--he'd bring the country together instead of splitting us further apart. Of course we'd still argue, but the extremism on both sides would likely subside.

he was a terribly savvy politician and had a realistic vision of foreign affairs no doubt, he garnered the 'hate' of those hard to the left which went a long way with those leftists who 'influenced' media that then went on a crusade to bring him down, and were successful.
perhaps another legacy of his is being the first prez to run smack into a horribly biased 2 tier

The thing is, by current standards, Nixon is quite charismatic. Combined with his eloquence and obvious intelligence, he would be a force to be reckoned with today. Just look at how well Polievre is doing in Canada right now - he's the only "complete package" I can think of amongst western leaders.
Also consider Justin Trudeau and his reputed father Pierre (who Nixon dealt with throughout his presidency). Both of them were/are charismatic with little substance, the present one showing less of both. Both received support of the type of Canadian that likes the attention from foreign celebrities and media. In my foreign travels I never once was asked about an actual proficient Canadian PM. Only those two.

well that's a new one -- 'charismatic', I'm a strong supporter of Mr. Nixon but that characteristic is not one that's typically used, but I'm sure he would approve.
Mr. Nixon was terribly shy and intimidated by East Coast Ivy leaguers, he did not do well with small talk nor did he make friends easily, but when a friend he had their back that was what took him down. Sticking with Alderman and Erlikhman when he needed to walk away from them...

Yes , Nixon had human frailties and a temper from dealing in politics. But he was and is a good President. Patriot, pro military, peace through strength, was in favor of small government rather than bureaucracy.

it strikes me the folks who are commenting positively were not around during Mr. Nixon's time, many folks supported him even in his downfall, but many folks 'hated' him as well, and used Watergate as a vehicle to justify their hatred, kinda like, of sorts, what Mr. Trump is experiencing.
one piece of Mr. Nixon's legacy is China, the other is the former USSR, both he had much influence of and he's proud of that. He took on a heck of a mess in Indochina but still extricated the US out of it as he campaigned on.
he was hardly a perfect individual but one could not question his loyalty and dedication to the US...

Nixon was the opposite of Trump.
It's funny because up until the Watergate nothing burger "scandal", Nixon was WILDLY popular among great sections of Americans. His 1972 election was virtually flawless (520 electoral votes which remains the 3rd highest of all time behind Reagan's 525 electoral votes in 1984 and FDR's 523 electoral votes in 1936) but it was the amount of popular votes that Nixon amounted that remains his greatest domestic political victory. Almost 18 million more people voted for Nixon over die hard liberal George McGovern. That remains the largest amount of votes for a Republican candidate over a Democratic challenger in American history. And what makes it even MORE remarkable about that election victory is that it was the first election held after the passage of the 26th amendment which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. So basically you had youngsters and pretty much kids voting en masse for a guy who was at the time seen by the media as a stiff relic from the Eisenhower 1950s. After all Nixon lost (barely) to the charismatic and handsome Jack Kennedy in 1960 and Nixon won (again barely) in 1968 almost completely due to the deep political divisions within the Democratic party at the time over Vietnam
I just realised that Richard Nixon and I were born on the same day, January 9. I also believe in results and in what someone believes in, the cause, not if a leader is charismatic. Discipline is a very underrated trait, which is a shame actually.
I'm finding these old interviews fascinating, i remember Nixon when i was growing up but wasn't interested in politics as a kid.
Watching these old Nixon interviews draws a parallel with the great rock bands of the 60's and 70's. One could listen to the current crop of dreary music and ask "Why can't we have great song writers and bands like we used to have?" Where are the Richard Nixons of today? Did the media kill them off?
I must remember that line for my next job interview.

Correct - and on the surface, without the knowledge of the things he did, he may SEEM charismatic. But once you draw back the curtain it is impossible to separate the man from the deeds. In this very interview he discusses his compelling interest for promoting peace. A generous term to describe this would be disingenuousness - a more accurate phrase would be outright lying. Now whether he is lying to himself as well as his audience, I don't know. But torpedoing the Johnson peace talks to help his election chances in '68, widening the war into Cambodia (which ultimately led to destabilization and and ultimately a bloodbath) and Laos, slow-stepping our withdrawal from Vietnam so that it took 7 long years to get our last soldiers out after he first took office, the outrageous and nonsensical carpet bombing of the North in 1972 long after he had started pulling our soldiers out, the mining of Hai Phong harbor, the attempted coup in Chile which almost plunged that country into a civil war - all these things, and many more, do not speak of a man that truly believes in peace as a core philosophy. I simply cannot assign charisma to a man that lies with every breath that he takes. Even his friends - and there were very few - found him to be cold and duplicitous.

37th President Richard Nixon was a good president in a very turbulent time, not that much different than today. His message to us is chose substance over style, need over want, skill and wisdom over flash and appearance.
All the folks capable of this kind of analysis on the fly are in the tanks of thinking these days.
I wish he were still around. A great president and intellectual.

Generally speaking, when living in a free democracy, a politician depends on getting elected. So, I agree with mr. Nixon about substance, the cause you truly have to believe in, and in being effective implementing that cause as it presents itself in all its aspects. But as with marketing, a politician has to pay attention to those voters: what do they want, and how can you package substance and voter needs into one trustworthy message. I don’t have the answers, but as a politician you have to pay attention to both sides to be successful, like being elected in the first place.
I miss Mr Nixon, in spite of his flaws, he was 10 times a better man than the present sitting members of the GOP

I cannot think of a single other politician and/or statesmen who compares favorably against Richard Nixon. But I also like Gavin Newsome -- not because of his looks, but because I believe he understands, more than many, how government actually works.

Nixon was charismatic in his own unique way. One measure of a politician's charisma is when comedians make fun of you (which is their patriotic American duty!), is it funny? Dan Akroyd's Nixon impression on SNL were the funniest things I ever saw, because Akroyd made fun of Nixon's unique quirks. Unique = charisma. Unique = memorable.

To say that the most important asset of a leader is to believe in the cause is absolutely true, in an absolutely political sense. (If Nixon could qualify this statement he would add that the cause is not important as long as the leader believes it, but there have been, and are, a great many terrible causes with very powerful leaders.) It does make one wonder about most Democrats since 1980s, who in my opinion have never really believed in much of what they officially advocate for--healthcare for all, paid parental leave, high taxes on the rich etc.--and campaign on them just enough to get the office, but cannot deliver.

Growing up I was told about bad Nixon was. That he was caught doing some political B.S. What he's done pales in compared to what's going on today. What a smart man, and a great President if you ask me. Subsequent Presidents have done much worse but they just dismiss everyone as idiots instead of Nixon who had the balls to resign.

They never showed us any of Nixon's speeches or moments in California public schools. I think they were afraid that the general public would remember why they liked him so much. I hate all the blue states that hide the truth. He was an amazing speaker.

I've always admired and respected President Nixon, but honestly, in a world of superficialities and sound bites, to NOT care about personal charisma is to put a nail in your own political coffin. Sadly, it was charisma over competence that gave us the twin horrors of Clinton and Obozo. So to all those republican politicians out there, for the sake of your political careers and our country....at least TRY to act like you've got a personality!!!
We also need to change education, and teach kids about the dangers of charismatic leadership.

Nixon was a good president
I've been telling people for years he was a great president. I grew up, like many others, thinking he was a bad guy, a cheater, a crook, etc. but when I looked at his actual accomplishments, I really believe he's one of the top three presidents. He was actually worked for peace, since him they just drop bombs. He foresaw the corporate takeover of America and created institutions that still protect us to this day. He enacted legislation that still protects the environment. He enacted laws protecting human rights. I believe the reason his name was dragged through the mud for half a century is to make an example of what happens to presidents who stand up against corporate abuses, because nobody since him has really done much to slow our degradation to plutocracy and corporatocracy. All candidates are now pre-approved by the corporate overlords.

Nixon is a great example of why being intelligent is not enough to be a good leader. I am convinced he would have been a better secretary of state than a president. and also that he would have been a much better secretary of state than Kissinger.

Maybe but it's hard to know. Fun fact though: Nixon was actually the first major political figure to tell Trump in a letter that he should get into politics. This happened about 40 or so years before Trump went into national politics. Apparently Nixon at the time saw a lot of potential in the still very young but brash and wealthy real estate developer and business man from New York City

Actually, when I think of the Cold War victory, Nixon was the starting pitcher and Reagan was the relief pitcher. By the time Reagan came in, the score was 10-6 for the United States, so all Reagan had to do is not give up a grand slam homer.

The more I learn about JFK, I realize he was shockingly incompetent. The Bay of Pigs fiasco, the Diem fiasco in South Vietnam, the Khruschev Summit fiasco.
Nevertheless, we may have been lucky that JFK's Hollywood looks won in 1960. Nixon would later say he did not yet have the foreign policy mastery in 1960 to do what he did achieve as President: "defeat the Soviet Union without starting World War III."
