Fortunate enough to see Donovan in concert, circa 1977 opening act for Yes.He played all of his hits,"Sunshine Superman","Mellow Yellow",and this song...,had a band backing him up,great show!
The first record I ever bought was a 45 of Mellow Yellow by Donovan in 1967 and I still have it. It's still my favourite Donovan song, followed by Sunshine Superman and Hurdy Gurdy Man.
Although Donovan has declared in several interviews that it was indeed Jimmy Page who played the famous guitar solo on Hurdy Gurdy Man, John Paul Jones, Clem Cattini and Jimmy Page himself have said that it was actually Alan Parker.
Alan Parker played the electric rhythm guitar, Donovan played the acoustic rhythm guitar, and Allan Holdsworth played the fuzz lead guitar. He told me that Jimmy Page was indeed at the session and that he borrowed Allan's guitar, a heavily modified Strat, but didn't get along with it, and no one can remember for sure if the solo was Holdsworth or Page. He did say that John Bonham was nothing to do with it, and that Page and Jones hadn't yet met Bonham at the time and were trying to get a band together with drummer Mac Poole.
1968 was one of the worst years ever in USA history (2020 and 2021 are trying to challenge that!) Fortunately we had great music to keep our minds off Vietnam and every bad thing. One of many psychedelic songs to hit the top 40 in the summer and fall of 1968 which became big hits.
There is a missing verse that George Harrison wrote: “When truth gets buried deep Beneath a thousand years of sleep Time demands a turn-around And once again the truth is found.”
Anyone else wish they could go back in time and hang out with Donovan and his friends?
If you did, watch out for the zodiac killer.
Yes
Of course! His friends were the beatles lol

1968 wasn't all that bad, at least to my parents because it was the year I was born.
Thanks for posting this treasure.
This video rules!
Just saw the movie Zodiac .....great song, disturbing movie😟
Damn the guitar and drums!!!!
Such a psychedelic time.
Anyone find it ironic that Hurdy Gurdy Man does not have a Hurdy Gurdy played anywhere in it.
Great video accompanying the song.
