    Some clarification for the part where I said "...I always felt Star Wars was pretty agnostic when it came to social issues".
    I was not saying Star Wars never used world issues or events as inspiration for its story telling, (Nazis, Vietnam, etc), but illustrating there is a difference between using events of the past to inspire your storytelling art, and using your storytelling art to inspire change in your present day.
    It seems in the past, if you wanted to see Star Wars as simply the fun space adventure, you could. If you wanted to see allegory you could, but I always felt the delivery was crafted through a looking glass of the past, not a magnifying glass of the present.
    Granted the execution and reception of current Star Wars politics and past Star Wars politics might have more to do with social media, but that's another conversation. I wish I had gone into more detail about this in particular, and "agnostic" isn't the word I should have used in hindsight, but you can't edit a video post upload, but thank goodness for the ability to pin a comment.

      Jeremy Jahns that's very true. I haven't heard anyone compare it that way but I think it explains why so many are rallying against the new movies.

      Very well said. So far I think Rogue One has done the best job with retaining the fun spirit of Star Wars, while having serious themes.
      It didn't revel in on-the-nose twitter fueled snark or subverting fan expectations in a reactionary way. TLJ was flagrant in that regard. Was it surprising? Sure. But the shock of surprise wears off fast.
      Nearly every choice made for the sake of unpredictability and "killing the past" resulted in a story that is no longer interesting or intriguing. No one I know cares about how the trilogy will end any more... and that can't be good for business.

    I think it safe to say that Disney is mishandling Star Wars, not just in the cinematic department, but in other things as well!
    Like - What are the 2 things that Disney made with SW video games after acquiring the franchise?
    1) Shutting down Lucas Arts.
    2) Giving the license for future SW games to EA - One of the most corrupt and hated companies in the gaming industry!

    • @masterpenguin8472

      There is a group of elite people hell bent on destroying the USA, and every memory of her. The Disney corp is just doing what their bosses want, which is to destroy one of the biggest American made franchises, and that is Star Wars and Lucas Films. Their next step is to destroy American made Marvel comics. And, Disney is throwing everything they can to destroy Time Warner in hopes to get DC and destroy those American properties as well.

    I could have excused Leia pulling a Mary Poppins through space. I could have excused that painfully long side-quest of Finn and Rose through the big mean capitalist utopia. I could have excused Rey being stupidly powerful for no discernible reason.
    I could even have excused that travesty that was Admiral Gender-Studies *extremely unprofessional* attitude towards Poe, and the contrived plot of her not telling him the plan when all their lives *hinge on her plan*
    But what I will *never* forgive. What I *refuse* to accept, is turning Luke Skywalker, the HOPE of the rebellion, the ETERNAL OPTIMIST, the BELIEVER IN REDEMPTION, that he just *pussies* out of the galaxy, and lets it go to shit after trying to *murder his nephew because he was having a bad dream*
    The man who said this: "I cannot kill my own father. There is good in him."

    Just speaking for myself, it started back in The Force Awakens, when Leia bypasses Chewbacca and goes to hug Rey upon their return. Just going to say it, that hurt to see. But, I thought, whatever. Fast forward to TLJ, the incredible buildup of Rey holding out Luke's lightsaber and he..what. Throws it over his shoulder?? Right there I *knew* Star Wars had gone in a new direction, one that I was not interested in traveling. No hate towards anyone but Lucasfilm does not get any more of my money. Han Solo, after the original films, lived a life of failure. Failed as a father, husband and eventually as a smuggler. Killed by his son that he loved. A sad death.
    Luke, failed as a teacher, Jedi, uncle, and brother. Indirectly responsible or the death of billions. Succeeded only in the end saving maybe 20 people?
    Leía failed as a politician, general, and mother. And any success she has in the next film will be off screen. And a failed promise as a character with the force.
    The characters that we the fans loved all failed. And have symbolic at best success in the films.
    I don’t understand how they could do this and not alienate some fans. Doesn’t mean there is any right disrespectful to the folks who make these movies. But I believe that is a root of all the anger. The sadness that we feel to how these characters were treated has hardened to anger. I’m just bummed. Wish I like this direction, but I don’t. Wish the folks at Lucas well. But this universe is not for me anymore.

      Disney and Lucasfilm are still getting a mixture of reactions. A lot of people seem to think the solution is an "origin story" about whatever character, but they're just setting themselves up for more disappointment. Oversaturating with separate storylines isn't the way. The saga trilogy was already mucked up anyway because of Carrie Fisher's real death and whacking the character of Han Solo in "The Force Awakens." Reminds me of Kathleen Kennedy's own words back when a fourth Jurassic Park movie was put on hold after Michael Crichton died, saying his death took the wind out of their sails and they weren't into it anymore (for a while, anyway).

    The Last Jedi is if they made a new Middle Earth trilogy after Lord of the Rings where Aragorn turns out to be a POS king. He runs away to Moria because Gondor was a bad idea. A NEW Dark Lord, who is basically Sauron named "Bloke", suddenly shows up and is more powerful than Sauron. It goes unexplained where he was during LOTR. He ALSO sets his army up in Mordor with orcs that only look SLIGHTLY different. Instead of an unlikely hero like Frodo, who is great because of what he chooses to DO, we get a strong female character who is only great because of her magic powers. She kills Bloke in the 2nd movie of the trilogy, dethrones Aragorn, and does all this without struggle. But you only think that sounds dumb because you hate women.

She did all of this without training I might add. It's also important to note SHE is the one to give advice to Gandalf about how he's been screwing up and how she's got to go save Middle Earth on her own without him now. That's how awesome of a character she is...

    The biggest mistake Star Wars made is ignoring the Extended Universe.. They literally have 100's of stories that they could pull from, ideas that they could utilise to build the franchise, but they do nothing with them. The MCU exists because of the comics, they cherry pick ideas they love and use them to fill out their own original ideas. Star Wars could do the same, but instead they don't have a clue what to do. They keep looking to the past films and it's just not satisfying.

      @@legotech101 The EU wasn't trash. I understand the complications in trying to reconcile all of it together into a cohesive and consistent narrative. But to say it was trash is ludicrous. They could have used the EU characters and history and brought that to life on the screen, in the same way as the MCU has done from the comics. That would have been amazing, especially the Timothy Zahn novels. The Jaina and Jacen story would have been 1000 times better than the hacked up mashed up frankenstein thing that is EPS VII - IX. And then as a big ole FU to the fandom they not only said nah, we are going somewhere "new", all those novels and comics you bought, all the merchandise involving EU properties...that's all fan fiction.

      If they kept it canon, they would not have had enough freedom to create new movies and believe it or not : MANY people aren't familiar with the expanded universe. The expanded universe must be a bonus and the movies must NOT depend on it.
      The only movie that made that mistake was SOLO by putting MAUL in it and what did that lead to ? People getting confused on why is a guy that DIED in the previous movies still alive after all these years. Heck, even people who watched both Clone Wars and Rebels didn't understand how he got here.

    • @bobbymaycry9748

      Well if you read Marvel comics you would know the MCU overly retell those stories to fit the screen. And not always for the better, some are even weakened to spite the Fox counter part (Age of Ultron)
      Take Homecoming for example, I don't recall Peter being a crying b+^%> relying on Tonys A.I. and even crying for his name. And that's not even going into how much the MCU has butchered Flash Thompson. A character the late and great Stan Lee loved creating character development for has resulted into "Parker Pe^%$"

    Thanks for saying this in an intelligent and approachable way. It is an issue, it does need to be talked about and it's far too easy for movie studios to try to paint everyone as racist / sexist / misogynist for not being wholly supportive and lovestruck by every character, joke and plot element. It doesn't help that there are a few muppets out there who do phrase their arguments in unpleasant ways making it easy for studios to cherry pick examples of bad reviewers.
    For me, the original movies do feel disrespected. Characters have been neutered, killed off-screen, diluted, and assassinated to make way for political messages dressed up as characters. I've nothing against the idea of a female Jedi, I'd have *loved* to see a Mara Jade / Jedi Leia / Jaina Solo character in there, but Rey's come from nothing, and is effortlessly a better pilot than Han, and a better Jedi than Luke, and just doesn't feel like a real person. "The Force is Female" slogan is needlessly divisive.
    They also feel rushed and like they're shrinking the universe (which apparently ONLY contains Star Destroyers, Death Stars, TIE Fighters Jedi, X-Wings and "Yo momma" jokes)
    Five planets blown up in Episode 7. Zero response from the rest of the galaxy. 95% of the Rebellion wiped out in Episode 8. How are we at episode EIGHT and talking about a "spark" that'll ignite a flame? If you're reduced that much by episode 8, you're not a spark, you're a dying ember.
    Hope Disney listens and weaves their politics naturally back into just being the subtext as opposed to being the ONLY message these movies put across.

      Some very good points made and I agree, especially with your second point. After reading a lot of the expanded universe with some great character developments and adventures for the characters I loved in SW, it is difficult to adjust to the new Disney narrative where the characters have all failed and had their lives fall apart since the OT, only for them to return in the sequels as different characters who are only there to be killed off for the sake of adding drama. I never imagined watching ROTJ that that was the end of those characters' stories, only that is was an end of that chapter and the beginning of a new.

Yeah, us older fans didn't like them as much as the OT, but we STILL WENT. All 3, opening night, multiple times. And whether you liked them or not, we were all Star Wars fans and we talked about our disagreements with the movies civilly, for the most part. This time, we are not going to see the movies anymore. And if you DARE express your "displeasure" with Disney's handling of the franchise, there is no civil discussion, it IMMEDIATELY turns into a screeming fit where I find out I'm a racist, sexist, bigot who isn't a real fan. Sometimes it's actual LFL employees who decide to insult me. That's nice.

    The thing with the prequels, as much as I dislike the first two, they still are a Star Wars movie.
    They are good fun, and let us explore the different worlds like Naboo, Kashyyyk, Utapu, Kamino, Genosis, ect...
    We got to see cool characters like Maul, Dooku, Jango, the Clones, all the different Jedi, and Grievous.
    There were emotionally involved scenes like Order 66 and Anakin and Obi-Wan's final conversation.
    I haven't felt any of this from Disney's movies. The planets they visit are either similar to Earth, or just rehashes of the OT planets like Jakku (Tatooine) and Crait (Hoth). It seems like they've condensed the universe, and it doesn't really feel like star wars to me...

    Solo bombed because:
    76% of the audience didn't like "The Last Jedi" (according to Rotten Tomatos actual audience score, WITH the half star reviews INCLUDED, which RT drops from its scoring algorithm).
    Then, when fans say, "hey, Disney, Lucasfilm, we don't like the hardline feminist and SJW propaganda film direction Kathleen Kennedy (head of Lucasfilm) is taking Star Wars, Kennedy, Rianne Johnson (director of TLJ...and Looper), and others start berating fans (aka customers) on social media.
    Then, Disney doubles down with Solo, playing around with Lando's sexuality.
    Combine this nonsense with Kennedy telling fans she can do whatever she wants with Star Wars because she's bringing in the big money and people will buy tickets regardless of how her personal agenda invades the film.
    What results is fans, customers, keeping their wallets closed. Which brings me to another great Kathleen Kennedy quote, "I don't owe the fans anything. I owe something to the company I work for."
    Well, with her mismanagement of the Star Wars franchise and mistreatment of "the company-she-works-for's" customers on social media, hopefully she won't work there much longer.
    Another problem Disney needs to address, besides a Lucasfilm management change is they need to hire WRITERS to write the scripts and hire a director to...direct. With Kathleen Kennedy's corrosive meddling, writers could craft agenda and twitter free stories.
    Thanks, Mr. Jahns for bringing this story of how Kathleen Kennedy is destroying Star Wars to a wider audience.

      I was never a huge Star Wars fan. I was a fan but not like how some people are. But when force awakens came out I was excited and overall it paid off I enjoyed it. When rogue one came out I was like neat. I watched it and enjoyed it. But when last Jedi came out I was excited and then.... not. It just felt like it wasn’t part of a trioligy and so much wrong. And then solo was announced and I couldn’t care less. I’m all Star Wars out. Add in the ball drop that has been the battlefront games as well and Star Wars is no longer the power house it was. The ball has been dropped to often now and with them pushing such social commentary into their films they don’t even feel like a fun sci fi flick anymore.
      The Star Wars name alone isn’t enough to make these films powerhouses anymore.

    1) TLJ and the general direction of the franchise are hated by many fans. 2) KK is hated by many fans. 3) Avengers and DP2 are competing with it. 4) Memorial Day weekend in the US, people are having BBQs and chilling with family. 5) SW always does poorly in China. 6) Marketing for the film was poor, no hype, and many don't know about it. 7) Not Harrison Ford. 8) Not really a necessary story, no one wanted it and it doesn't connect to the current trilogy. 9) Movies are getting pricey.
    10) Widely known production issues. 11) Very "meh" reviews. 12) Big weekend for sports, especially overseas (Champions League final last Saturday night, which is huge all around the world). 13) Last SW movie 5 months ago. Yes, Marvel is succeeding with 3 movies a year, but they have worked hard at building a franchise over 10 years that has rewarded fans. Lucasfilm have a bad relationship with a lot of the fandom currently.

She insulted the fans that kept this franchise alive and made the purchase even desirable for Disney to begin with. I’m not giving them my money. I’m done. And I don’t even feel conflicted about it, because TLJ was actual shit. It ruined SW. So I don’t even have to worry that I’m missing anything of quality. Kathleen Kennedy managed to sink what should have been an unsinkable ship. She’s made wrong decision after wrong decision, and she refuses to even admit any of them. I get wanting to garner a new audience, but chucking aside the older fans; the people who supported the franchise thick and thin, bought your merch, helped keep the franchise alive even after the PT. It's like a restaurant owner telling there loyal customers to piss off. It is poor business practice for the sake of an agenda. So yeah; I have no regrets not seeing Solo. If she does not want older fans like me to engage, cool. I'll spend my money elsewhere. Marvel's making great films, anime and manga have been captivating me.
      Overall, I truly believe if LucasFilm just swallows some humble pie and admits that there were a group of fans taken aback by TLJ and the current direction and promised to change, I believe that would go a long way. Jake Voronkov i guess you can call empty characters, pointless out of place plot lines, giant plot holes, and injecting politics into a beloved franchise "something different" but I'd call it garbage. You know a movie is bad when it degrades other movies along with itself.
      Oh and no one is upset at "change". They are upset at bad writing and how horrible the og series has been treated by people who clearly don't like it let alone know anything about it. The fan base had open arms for this new trilogy, they just didn't expect it to be handled this poorly.

      I definitely get Jeremy's point but then Lucas has always used real life as a metaphor or reference in his movies, even before he sold it to Disney. Example: he based the Empire off of Nazi Germany and the space dogfights off of WW2 dogfights. Palpatine's rise to power was based on Rome or Nixon or Hitler coming to power. Lucas even specifically said ROTJ was a metaphor for Vietnam. So yeah, putting nods to real life events in SW movies is not a new thing.

      Hate has been plaguing Star Wars since before the first movie came out in 1977 and it never left. None of this started with The Last Jedi. It just got renewed, and so the cycle of hatred exchanged members once again. And TLJ is the worst Star Wars movie ever made and critique is more than deserved.
      Completly changing the formular and tone of Star Wars was just a bad idea, If you want to continue an existing Saga successfully.
      It never even tried to continue the story and exchanged it for some cheap jokes. Thats not storytelling to me. Why even call it SW Episode 7,8,9 then

    • @darthbane5676
      @darthbane5676 6 років тому

      Cas ual I honestly have a hard time believing we saw the same movie, but you can go on hating the movie all you want; that’s fine with me. It doesn’t annoy me anywhere close to as much as the people who attack the actors and directors for making something they personally don’t like for months on end, insult anyone who actually enjoys the new content, and try to ruin Star Wars for everyone who doesn’t think it already ruined itself. Even if Star Wars isn’t for everyone anymore, it’s not right to tell people how to feel or bully actors off of social media for a piece of fiction.

    • @IdocarebutIdont
      @IdocarebutIdont 6 років тому +1

      People really shouldnt insult other people because of some fiction. But there still needs to be critique, especially for Rian Johnson.
      Star Wars just has influenced too many lifes and became way too big to be handed to some random director who doesnt seem to understand the core.
      Its like a million dollar chinese restaurant hired a new chefcook, whos capable of making some food, but has absolutely no knowledge about good asian food.
      Of course longtime customers will complain If it doesnt tastes like good asian food anymore. Some people will complain in a gentle way and some wont, thats just human.
      But maybe you should exchange your fucking cook If so many people are unsatisfied, instead of blaming the customers who just expected the brands old quality.

    I didn't dislike The Last Jedi because I am a die-hard Star Wars fan and Rian Johnson totally crapped on the Star Wars lore, which he did. I hated The Last Jedi because as a movie, it was absolutely terrible. It had the worst writing and plot progression I have ever seen. The movie abandoned reason and logic in order to shoehorn the most forced plotline I have ever seen. It was just a horrible movie. That's why I hated it. And that, compounded with the fact that it's Star Wars, and Star Wars is supposed to be awesome, made it even worse.

      This is exactly what I've been saying, it doesn't matter that it's Star Wars, it could have been any franchise, it was just a terrible movie. It was a High-school project movie with AAA special effects. I've literally watched a movie about a tire that roams the countryside exploding people's heads that had a better plot and did a better job of simply being a movie and not a badly stitched together mess of 20min clips with almost no ties to each other.

      I agree. Dont consider myself a hardcore fan, enjoyed the world lore and found the original movies, enjoyable, but not fantastic film-making That said, The Last Jedi was an ATROCIOUS piece of cinematic SHIT Every other scene was a What Da Fuq moment for me They destroyed the well-established world lore, the timing was HORRIBLE, the film-makers seemed not to know the source material, or even what genre and type of film that they were even trying to make, and the dialogue was CRAP....NOTHING original was brought to the actual galaxy far, far storytelling, AT ALL.... TOTAL character assassination (in the case of Han Solo, BOTH figuratively and literally) performed on the original core characters of the Star Wars Saga...

      But the side plot you're talking about made up about 20 minutes of the overall movie, are you basically saying that because of the small side plot not being too great (which I agree with) ruins the rest of what I believe is a good film? Overall to me the positives massively out way the negatives and this is my problem with TLJ critique because it seems to all focus only on very small parts of the films that people didn't like.

      I'm guessing TFA is one of them--he was way over the top when that movie came out. I left the theater disappointed after my first viewing--I had reserved two showings that opening night--so while I waited to see it again, I watched his review...needless to say I was wondering if we'd watched the same movie. I was shocked how much he liked it, and so I thought maybe it was me. Then I watched it the second time that night...and hated it more. When I got home and saw more praise from other sources, I knew we were in trouble--something was wrong...REALLY WRONG. It didn't make sense to me--but then other voices clapped back at the love-fest, and a real debate began. The fans of TFA couldn't really argue effectively against the criticism, but they always had this ace up their sleeve: "wait for the next movie and it will all make sense--it's the first movie of the trilogy, be patient--etc"...they no longer have that. Maybe they felt more betrayed than those of us that didn't like TFA...and then came SOLO. It wasn't enough that Rey was a Mary Sue, they had to turn Han into a Gary Stu lol--but in SOLO's defense, no matter what happened in the movie, we knew he and Chewbacca weren't red shirts. SOLO suffered because of TLJ--there's no other reason. Sure, it wasn't a good movie, and had more of the same SJW-type bs in it, but people had already made up their minds they weren't going to see it (at least they weren't going to give DIsney any money to see it--I'm sure they'd watch it if it didn't cost them anything). That's on TLJ, plain and simple. I'll never forget how Jeremy was..."on the fence" about TLJ--I had watched it opening night too, and was thinking to myself "There's no way Jeremy is going to praise this monstrosity!"--when he said he had to see it again to solidify an opinion, I LMAO! I was like "nope, it really was that bad, and he doesn't want to believe it". I think that disappointment allowed him to see TFA in a new light--to really see why so many of us criticized it from the very beginning.

      "Unique" literally SW Phantom Menace ends with Skywalker destroying a space station, and if you want to say "there's much more to it than that" there's much more to the new movies, but you can easily make something seem unoriginal when you break it down.
      The prequels aren't special, they're just as unoriginal as any other movie, only with the added bonus of crappy dialogue, say what you will about the rose and finn scene, at least I didn't have to put up with that for THREE MOVIES, like I did in the prequel.

    Omg, I need to address the midichlorians issue. It doesn’t change anything about the Star Wars universe. The reason being, the closer you look at something the more detail you see.
    A universe is infinite in every direction, including inwardly; that is why there is a quantum scale, it shows some of the building blocks to reality. The physics of the quantum scale are entirely different and weird, and I don’t see why it would be any different in Star Wars. In fact, I think it’s a natural explanation for some of the properties of the force.
    Furthermore, if we had the technology to look even closer to quantum particles, I’m 100 percent certain we would discover even more because that’s how infinity has to work if our model of the universe is correct.
    Midichlorians are a logical byproduct of the reality portrayed in Star Wars.
    Being mad at that concept being introduced into the story is like being angry that you found out you’re made of atoms.

      This such an educated answer. To be fair, I was just starting primary school when the Phantom Menace came out so I didn't understand the concept anyways, but I didn't think it was a bad creative decision at all. I just assumed he was taking some sort of blood test just to assess his genetics and health. Didn't really seem like a childhood destroying concept that the internet ranted on about years later

    Star Wars could make $500m a month, if the movies were of very high quality. This was not because of fatigue. Three big reasons are.
    1. Characters and story took a dive. The new movies were rehashes of the old plot, and characters were mediocre at best.
    2. People are sick of having far-Left, inter-sectional, Marxist/ Postmodernism ideology, pushed at them through games, movies, comics. They want quality stories, not high budget political indoctrination.
    3. The Fans got fed up with having their concerns belittled, and being insulted. I have never seen an imdustry treat their customers so badly, going so far as to say that males, who make up the majority of SW fans, are not wanted. When you spit this right in the faces of your customers how can you not expect a backlash?
    When you hand your customers a crap product, ignore their objections, and then insult them to their faces, you have just killed your business.

      m chlfx you’d have to rewatch the film with an open mindset and looking for the flaws that may oppose your world views. It’s challenging to see if you aren’t looking for it but when you do you’ll understand people’s complaints. I don’t know if you’ve ever read or watched something as a kid and watched it again as an adult and you see it much differently. A similar thing happens when individuals watch something, each person gravitates to things differently. For example in the force awakens when Finn grabs Rey’s arm and Rey tells him to let go of her one person might see that as a great achievement for empowering women, and breaking social norms. Others may see at as contrived, unnecessary, and way out of the realm of a galaxy far far away, as well as belittling men. Two very different interpretations and imo equally valid, getting mad at the other side doesn’t help either side.

    • @mchlfx
      @mchlfx 6 років тому +2

      I don't see how that empowers women or belittles men. People look way too deep into things. Star Wars isn't and never will be that deep. The morality in Star Wars is almost completely black and white, which is childish, and not at all reflective of real life. What I took from that scene was that Rey didn't really trust Finn, and with good reason. And I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it.

    The Current state of Star Wars is a state of denial. Star Wars fans are _pissed_ . I know, not all of us, but a pretty significant portion of us. The thing is, it's not just about Last Jedi. It certainly _started_ with Last Jedi, but the way Lucasfilm employees have handled the anger has just made everything worse.
    I _hated_ Last Jedi. The treatment of Luke Skywalker was wretched and ignored everything about his character, Poe and Finn were reduced to bumbling comic relief, a painful amount of the runtime was devoted to a pointless and illogical plan that never made any sense, while Rey was elevated to godlike status. In Force Awakens her strange abilities were an interesting mystery - how does she know all the things she knows? In TLJ, we learn that...there is no reason. She's just that special. She is the absolute _definition_ of a Mary-Sue character, which removes all interest.
    So, having created a film that's torn a dedicated and devoted fanbase apart, how do the high muckety-mucks at Lucasfilm respond? With insults. Accusations that critics of this festering turd "can't handle strong female characters". Accusations of misogyny. Here's the thing, Lucasfilm - the only people bringing up Rey's sex are yourselves. Nobody else cares, except insofar as it clearly influenced the way she was written.
    If the leadership at Lucasfilm aren't interested in listening to feedback, the result is obvious - backlash. Boycott. Loss of interest in their products. That's why Solo is bombing - it's not about Solo, it's about Star Wars, and the way it treats its audience.

    Here's what happened to me. I saw Force Awakens and, while there were things I didn't like, I overall thought it was good. I was excited for TLJ. I came out with bits that I liked, but something in me hurt. I couldn't put my finger on it. Then I saw it again. The wound of Han Solo's fate, which hadn't yet healed upon hearing the news of Carrie Fisher, was made a gaping hole seeing Luke fade off into the sunset at the end. To me, THAT killed Star Wars. It was as if Disney literally told me, my hardcore fans for parents, and everyone who loved the movies before that THIS was the end, at least for us. It wasn't even a good note that it went out on. It was like Rocky V, Transformers The Last Knight, or Batman and Robin all rolled up into one. The worst part about it, is that those in charge decided that it was in their best interest to insult the people who loved Star Wars and that they only want new fans. The line "Let the past die, kill it if you have to" stood out like a sore thumb as their message to us. Thank you Jeremy for your thought provoking video. I hope you've taken the time to read this knowing that we the fans (perhaps former fans) of Star Wars will simply go back to watch the original, when Star Wars was still the fun space opera.

Us fans who loved these characters didn't matter. The new fans are now here... everything else didn't matter. I would've been okay with Han, Luke and Leia being killed off, but in a way that made it satisfying. But they didn't make It that way. So it hurts.

    The biggest issue i feel that went wrong with this is they didnt make a proper trilogy. There should have been ONE director or at least ONE vision for all three movies. All the great trilogies or plan a proper beginning middle and end to is cohesive.
    Think about it, the main reason people are pissed about stuff that happening in the Last Jedi is because nothing was delivered from the force awakens. The first movie of this trilogy hyped up so much things and it made Luke returning an important thing, it made mystery of snokes identity and reys parents an important thing and they made Rey and Kylos training significant, all for the last Jedi to toss all that away. Snoke died quickly with no backstory, luke died randomly without really returning to himself, Reys parents were nobody and Rey and kylo barely got any training. Just 2 lessons from luke for rey....
    Its like the second movie was its own separate movie with the same characters. Almost nothing was taken from the first movie except the setting they are starting in where Rey is already with Luke.
    Also i didnt mind that look was in a dark place but at least redeem him by the end. They tossed way luke and snoke in the lamest way. IF they were gonna do that at least give them a last hurrah. Like making a luke vs Snoke death match or something.
    Anyway with this lame second movie, there is also nothing to look forward to for the last one. I mean are we gonna watch Reys Mary sue ass beat Kylo again? She beat him in the first with no training, Beat him in the second with the force pull (he passed out while she was find to escape) and now we gotta watch a third beaten...... yay......
    . All in all i feel like Ryan Johnson just did whatever he wanted without actually thinking about a trilogy. He really set things up for a really lame last movie with nothing to look forward to.

    I'm glad Jeremy touched on the social justice thing. But I would say the reason Solo failed so hard was more about how the producers reacted to how the fans reacted. After TLJ, the fans reacted as Jeremy said. If they want social messages in their star wars, make it less heavy handed and still tell a good story. The creators simply called the people criticizing TLJ angry basement-dwelling white males who are too narrow minded. People got angry at that and said they are not watching Solo. And then people didn't watch Solo. And for some reason, Disney is surprised when the Solo boycott has been a big thing since the release of TLJ.

      In todays society when anyone make a point that you don't agree with either you are a racist or just a shit person. Many fans said that Kylo is far more interesting character and he should be the lead, people accused them of women hating and worst Disney legitimized these abuses against fans by saying fans don't like Rey because she is a girl. If you are not a racist or sexist and are misunderstood by people who think you are the reaction will not be kind. Now we have reached a point of no return where anyone who doesn't like Star Wars is a Trump Sumpporter and true fans who love all things Star Wars are supposedly enlightened.

      Saoirse Kavanagh Lucasfilm didnt know Carrie Fisher was going to die

    • @SaoirseK
      @SaoirseK 6 років тому +1

      Obviously they didn't, nobody did and Fisher's loss was devastating but my initial thought upon learning of her death wasn't "Oh, what are they going to do about Episode IX?" it was about her family and especially her daughter Billie. Fisher's tragic death aside, even if Leia featured in Episode IX I would still be of the opinion that the sequel trilogy has lost its main focus in having these new films solely focused on the conflict of a Skywalker protagonist. Yes, we have Kylo Ren as Ben Solo and yes he comes from the Skywalker bloodline but (and this is key) he isn't/wasn't portrayed or sold to us as the audience that he was the protagonist of the sequel trilogy no he was the villain and Rey was the protagonist.
      Whatever you opinion is of the Rey Skywalker theory, its fair to say that for us as a majority we were led to believe that after Episode VII Rey had a significant (past) connection to Luke we just didn't have the solid proof but the illusions, similarities, scene set up, story arc etc. were all pointing to Rey Skywalker and thus would've made the most sense considering that these new films would show the continued conflict of the Skywalker family with this new generation through Rey and Ben being cousins. I personally saw great poerty in that line of story writing but alas it seems that theory has been debunked unless JJ can make a serious 180 on Johnson's "reveal" through the words of Kylo Ren, a known manipulator and liar but that argument is for another day.
      Bottom line is from my point of view we've always had a Skywalker who wears the Skywalker name as the protagonist representing the light and him/her battling with themselves or a bigger enemy (the Empire) and that's how it should've continued (just my opinion). If we're genuinely to believe Ben is the Skywalker protagonist of these new films then its a complete copy and paste of Anakin/Darth Vader's story from the Original Trilogy. And another redemption arc story that's already been done and seen before through the eyes of Vader and Luke but hey, at least Luke was Vader's son thus a Skywalker (protagonist).
      It's just a damn shame what they've done with Rey's character (just my opinion don't hate me). Her being the first Skywalker protagonist (Leia never went by the Skywalker name & Luke was the main character) had such amazing potential and would've brought new life to the story through the eyes of a daughter trying to discover the past of her father and family she never knew. As i've said before we were all led on by Disney that this was the case, even people who weren't avid Star Wars fans who came out of Episode VII we're all of the opinion that Rey was Luke's daughter. It would've made the most sense to anyone who follows the Star Wars method of story telling with the Skywalker Saga. Rey Skywalker representing the light Ben Solo representing the dark. A duel of cousins so to speak but nope we were robbed. I honestly feel for JJ and wish him the best of luck for Episode IX I really do.

    • @frocat5163
      @frocat5163 6 років тому +1

      I actually think having Ben/Kylo die in the sequel trilogy, thus ending the Skywalker line, COULD be a powerful piece of storytelling. The Force essentially created a being to restore balance and after a mere three generations, the Force was done with them, and the line is dead. This could be particularly effective if Kylo were to help affect some kind of paradigm shift in our understanding of the Force. (Based on the current direction of SW storytelling, I sincerely doubt this will happen, but there's always hope.) If that were the plan, it would have made more sense to show Rey turning to the Dark Side while Kylo abandoned it. If Rian Johnson wanted to subvert expectations, THAT'S the way to do it. In fact, it almost seemed as if that's what was going to happen in TLJ. If you compare Kylo and Rey throughout the film, Kylo is calm, collected, and dispassionate throughout while Rey seems to continually give in to her emotions, particularly negative emotions. When she's fighting in Snoke's throne room, just look at the rage on her face while she kills the guards...then look at Kylo's face; he displays absolutely no emotion. Even they way they fight is the exact opposite of how they SHOULD; Rey is aggressive, going out of her way to attack while Kylo fights almost totally defensively, quietly and calmly dispatching any enemies who come close to him. Even in Rey and Kylo's Force DMs, Rey is yelling, angry, full of hate while Kylo approaches her with dispassion and calm. Kylo is ACTUALLY acting like Jedi while Rey is acting like a dark sider. Imagine how unexpected that would have been. That's almost Vader claiming to be Luke's father level of unexpected. Then, at the end of the film, Kylo returns to his mother, begs forgiveness, and rededicates himself to the Light, while Rey goes on a rampage and kills off the rest of the First Order, falling completely despite "helping" the Resistance survive. Then Episode IX would have to be a story told entirely on a personal level as Kylo/Ben confronts Rey to either redeem her or kill her. (I can't take credit for all of that. Anti-Trekker posted a lengthy review of TLJ in which he mentioned the Rey/Kylo switch; I just expanded on it a little.)

    • @SaoirseK
      @SaoirseK 6 років тому

      I see where you're coming from but I highly doubt Kennedy and Disney would've mapped out Rey's character from the beginning as her representing the light only then for her to turn to the dark side as its already been done and seen before through the eyes of Anakin/Darth Vader. But again, I see your point.
      I wouldn't have gone so far as to say Ben/Kylo was "dispassionate and calm" yes, he wasn't necessarily as vocally angry like Rey was (and she had every right to be) but Ben/Kylo is a trained manipulator and liar. He's to target and exploit his enemies weakness and to later use it to further his own gain. It's a trademark sign of one fallen to the Dark Side one in which Rey so far is unfamiliar with, thus is unaware its happening on her (her parents "reveal").
      Yes Rey yells, is angry and expresses her moments of hatred towards Ben/Kylo and Luke during parts of TLJ, but one can hardly judge her too harshly for that and her hatred is justified. For Ben/Kylo killing Han and turning his back on a family that loved him and for Luke who up and ran away from everything and everyone when the Galaxy and his sister needed him the most. Rey is still young to the ways of the Force and young herself in how best to channel and discipline her emotion and rage but she is learning and will put her natural skills to fight for good as it seems. But as i've said before, all of this would've had a much greater impact on her had she been revealed as the secret Skywalker of the sequel trilogy like her father once was. But that's just my honest opinion, we'll see how JJ best handles that in IX.

    • @frocat5163
      @frocat5163 6 років тому

      Actually, within the Star Wars universe and the mythos created over 40 years ago, we can judge her behavior specifically: It's literally the Dark Side. Hatred is NEVER justified for a Jedi. Period. That's the whole point of the Jedi - dispassionate detachment. Rey demonstrates the exact opposite of that, not once, but (as you point out) throughout the entire film. And there is no leeway given for acting with anger, hatred, aggression regardless of the Jedi's level of training or experience with the Force. In fact, the whole reason the Jedi took infants to be trained was so they wouldn't have the opportunity to act with those emotions before they learned of their connection to the Force...because it would ruin them before they were able to train. The fact that Rey's story and behavior is blatantly contradicting the established mythos is part of the problem. As far as the Force is concerned, Jedi NEVER have the "right" to be angry or to experience hatred.
