  • How Filthy Is The British Countryside - Part 1
As the only road throuh my town is shut down due to a sink hole. I decided to take my wheelbarrow, and see how much rubbish we could pick up on as we head towards the local tip.
I live out in the countryside, so this literally is the only road to get to each town, which made it even more shocking with just how much rubbish found. I couldn't believe how little I travelled and how many bin bags I filled.
This is going to have to be a series as I barely made it over 200m and the tip is over a mile away, so be prepared for some more serious barrow action coming soon.
    Until Next Time,
    W.T

Welcome to the world of Volunteer litter picking! If you are still interested, there is a large community on Facebook and UA-cam of volunteers who go out on a regular basis. I personally find it so satisfying to do it and give back to the community I live in! The first time I litter picked a two mile stretch of low trafficked country road I was shocked at the number of bags that I filled. It illustrated just how careless people can be.
There was an arrangement with Powys refuse collection service that we could use their brown refuse sacks (provided free to KWT) and have them collected with my own household rubbish.

I used to be a lengthsman for my local parish, duties included clearing drainage runnels, cleaning and trimming round road signs and litterpicking. I worked the lanes, no main roads or B roads. It was obvious that a lot of the litter was from only a few individuals who drove the lanes a lot, the same items thrown in the same places. As it happens there was one particluar spot where the was dozens and dozens of small gin and tonic cans. I speculated that someone must have been drinking on their way to or from home and chucking the cans to hide the fact from their partner.

Picking litter by hand from the ground will have you drenched in sweat in a couple of hours too. Amazing exercise.. Remember to stay hydrated. I filled approximately 10 large plastic (gardening?) bags with litter over the summer, walking in my local hilly terrain. Must have logged at least 10 miles by foot searching for little litte pieces of trash that exist in places that rarely or never gets cleaned. It's satisfying time spent because of the exercise and the goodhearted nature of the activity.

Many people come up and thank me, but there must be millions that just treat this beautiful planet we are lucky be be on as a rubbish dump. The more people start to realise we are on a finite planet, which can only take so much, the better for all humans and other animals on it. As Joni Mitchel sung "You don't know what you've got till its gone".

We're in a lot of trouble. What people don't realise (I hope it's just that they don't realise) is that with, particularly, the plastics - those plastics fall apart and infiltrate the soil and eventually the water. They don't biodegrade - they just become fragments too small to handle and eventually notice. What happens to them, when disposed of properly, might not be wonderful but at least when they're all known about and in designated areas - there's a chance they can be processed more safely. We're poisoning the soil and water we need to survive.

Glad you did this… anytime I go away and come back the one thing that irritates me the most is the state of litter everywhere..it stands out more and I can’t imagine what visitors think.
Motorway hard shoulders, normal streets, green areas are all a disgrace. I’ve been out and gathered 3 or 4 bags in about 100meters… you should get a litter picker to save your back. Personally I think local councils should make the fast food outlets pay for this… the majority of what I get is from Maccies, subway, Costa, Greggs and Starbucks.. all local to me. If they want to have a shop they should be paying for the clean up in their areas. Keep it up mate but be ready for it to be never ending. Great video

    • @GoldilocksZone-665
      @GoldilocksZone-665 День тому +1

The government can apply taxes, to fast and processed food, for supposedly health reasons - so why can't it do the same to pay for cleaning up what their patrons discard on roadsides? It's a similar situation where I live only I live about forty miles from the nearest fast food outlets. I think people go to their FF restaurant, buy their chicken nuggets or whatever, and then have a nice drive out to the countryside to throw their litter out of the car window.
Turnip needs a, yes, litter picker stick for reaching into bushes and over walls. A sturdier, two front wheels, cart type thing. Much stronger bin bags, and a resignation that he will probably have to keep doing this for the rest of his life. The dirty baggages, casually tossing their waste aside, aren't going to ever stop being dirty baggages.
And people are quick to have a go at the local councils for not clearing up the litter but those vehicles aren't designed to deal with the almost perverse natures of the litter droppers (they put their rubbish in bushes and throw it right back from the roadsides). Certain things start becoming swiftly friable, like carrier bags and paper items, and the grass grows over them - they fall to pieces when trying to pick them up. That bit of the job, I think, is best attempted when the weather is warmer. Frozen earth partially covering a discarded carrier bag is a nightmare to deal with. Winter is ideal for picking up cans and bottles (because we can really see them and they don't fall apart).
Also, Turnip, how about some pre written stickers for your bags to say something like "Don't worry - this is litter collected from the roadside and I'm coming back for it." and then you don't have to keep returning to that one hidden spot (which you may lose track of) to pile your filled bags up. You could then put the bags, once they're filled, on the walls or something without worrying either that people are going to see you and think you are fly tipping or that you're going to forget where they were. That was fifty meters so it wouldn't have been too difficult to keep carrying the filled bags to the same spot. When it's four miles of litter collecting - you won't be able to do that. Also, maybe the wheelbarrow/cart isn't going to be as useful as you imagine. I just walk around carrying my refuse sack. Much more mobile!

Also brought a shovel to clear years of soil buildup in the gutters and scoop leaves into landscape trees that will love the nourishment. Anyway, the rubbish is annoying to see so nice to bag it up but once you start and think "oh at least a half a bag there" ...2-3 full bags later I had to leave them and come back with the car to get them! And then over New Year's, new garbage already tossed by literal and figurative "Tossers"! from their cars😠. The trash here is a clue to the type of people who toss trash - mostly McDonalds food/cup trash, 7-11, booze bottles (all sorts) cigs and vapes!🤷‍♂️

You would need a skip to do the same trip not a few bin bags. Except the council only want people to attend the tip by vehicle. People dump anything now. Lots of people don't have cars or want to pay £35 for the council to collect a bulky item. The council also control how many times a year a vehicle can visit the tip. 🙄 Their plan don't work.

I have a job with a local council and will take it upon myself to litter pick, although it is not in my job description but I always like to go the extra mile. One thing for certain is I have learned just how filthy and disgusting this vile little country is. It is something resembling the 3rd world. It amazes me how quickly I can easily fill a 70 litre refuse sack.
All I can say is well done for your work and I'm sure many people will respect you for it. My parents ingrained in me from a young age to hold on to my litter until I get home. It annoys me when I see people just throw their litter on to the ground.

In 1990 a campaign called Clean Up Australia Day began, where volunteers across Australia worked together to clean rivers, oceans, parks, roadsides etc. It has grown into a massive movement and in the process has educated people about littering. Tourists comment about how clean Australia is now. There is very little litter to be seen along roadsides. We still have fly dumping unfortunately, but it's not so common.

White goods in the woods is a feature of British life .
The latest trend in my village of North Yorkshire ,is to fill one's garden with waste . Yer milleniums seem to be lacking the required understanding of the purpose of dustbins and dog waste bags , the responsibilities associated with the management of a dustbin , and dog waste bag , and their role in life to keep the shit down and respect one's neighbours and community .

You asked who these empty cans of gin and tonic belong to? Well, not many people know this but when the Queen Mother was alive and living at Clarence House, every now and then she liked to let her hair down and have a bit of fun.
Queen Mum had a very discreet chauffeur with whom she would conspire and when they thought they could get away unnoticed, she liked to go for drives up north.
By the time they arrived in Yorkshire, she would be half cut and had a lot of fun tossing them out the window. It was a game they played, how many could she land in the same bush.

I used to work in a shop on a retail park.
On slower day's or if i was working at the front of the shop I'd look outside to see what was going on. You'd see cars park up opposite the shops doors, car doors open and see people emptying rubbish from their cars on to the floor or throwing it into the bushes. It drove me mad, especially when the bin was next to the car.
The other thing is children in the car would see them doing this, which is just teaching the next generation to do it.
Late spring to early autumn when the shops are all closing up and the sun is still up, you'd see how bad the car park was. A sea of litter with the wind blowing it around like tumbleweed. The retail park employed someone to clean this daily, but they'd be there at 7 in the morning for an hour when the majority of it has all blown away.
As for the gin cans in the bush, your theroy on giw they have got there is probably correct. Alternatively it could be a couple of people in the way home from work having a drink and a chat then throwing their waste.
Unfortunately there for every 8 persons discarding their waste, it appears only 1 is picking them up.
