I don’t know what it is, but IMO your skating looks the best on venture lows. Always bolts, very steezy, just relaxed and lots of style.

@@bendegros hey, off subject, going to try thunders after 15 years of not skating (venture) . going for titanium 8" trucks, what type of board would you recommend? I saw you mentioned a narrow wheel, but not sure about pop and manual point. thunders used to scare me because they were so twitchy, however i think experimenting with bushings might get me to where i want to be with the thunders, but oh well im pretty much starting over as is so its the perfect opportunity to try something else. thanks man

I traded a joint for a brand new pair of Ventures in 1998.
Where I'm from there was this budget brand called Venture that sold the cheapest sneakers ever(plastic soles) and if you came to school wearing them... I'll just say, "I learned how to fight because of Venture sneakers"
They also sold things like school binders, socks and the worst clothes ever.
This older kid(at the time he was also a thug, thief and addict) asked me if I wanted to buy his complete for $10.
I asked, "why only $10?" he replied, "I need smokes and the board is crap" I knew skateboards at the time and he didn't. It was a brand new-ish ATM blank with Venture trucks and 48-mm spits.
He said his mom had gotten it for him at the Bi-way(a dollar-store type store before dollar stores were a thing)
I knew better because "double kick-tails" and Popsicle shapes (fuck i'm old) weren't at all common, and you couldn't even buy a piece of shit 80's shape skateboard made by "cash-in-on-trend brands" from any store besides the one skate shop in the city that hardly anyone could afford to go to.(places as small and out of the way as this were a nightmare for skaters shopping in the early 90's)
He really thought that the Venture trucks meant the whole set-up was crap, AND he even took the time to try and scratch off the name on the base plate as to not be subjected to ridicule.
I made the offer of a joint, and he was delighted...not as delighted as I was though. SCORE!

This review was actually helpful and entertaining, I have tried both Indies, thunder, and ventures, but I agree on that fact that its just something about the ventures that makes them nostalgic and cool. I really like riding tight trucks so that's a + for me. Thank you btw, nice video. Good flat ground.

I loved those trucks growing up. I skated them recently actually. I agree that the main reason I like them is for the nostalgic feeling. They also feel great on ledges. After skating Aces I don't think I could ever go back to not being able to turn though.

Been curious about ventures as i only picked up skating again last year, hadn't skated since school years. Loved trucks that didn't turn back then and currently skating tensor lows and loving the feel. Really wanna try some ventures now too cause i love trucks that don't turn. I tried someones board that had indies but couldn't ride it cause they turn so sharp. I would love indies or thunders if i did more in bowls though. Cool vids, love the honesty in your reviews.

yea, I agree I feel the size of decks will go down back to manageable sizes, I think big board trend will stop and people will go back down to at least 8.0.
I personally can't fully understand why people ride such big boards.
I think 8.0 (or Wade Desarmos ) 8.06 is a spot on size for me. plus that shape is amazing.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 років тому +3

I don't think we will see bigger decks disappear at all. They are better for most people. Right now though it has gotten hard to find anything in the 7.75-8 range that isn't a kids deck and I think we will see a resurgence in decks of that size.

    • @elijahmiller6187

I think bigger boards work for a lot of people nowadays and broke the stigma that larger boards weren't meant for street. I started skating an 8.0 in middle school and for the most part rode nothing but that size or up. I'm skating an 8.5 now and I love it. I. Also im pretty tall and wear a size 13 shoe. I think smaller decks can make a comeback tho because people still want em.

Had Venture Low 5.0 for a few months now ... My tricks aren't hollow so they are a bit heavier . My setup is really heavy for a 7.75 , there are people with 8.0 that are heavier than mine , but I never had a problem with the turning , if anything , I love it .. I'm quite heavy and having trucks that don't turn and have hard bushing is a life saver for me , I tried Indys and Thunders from friends of mine .... Thunders turn way too much and indys just feel weird to me when I'm doing a manual and I'm trying to turn , I end up losing the manual because the turn is weird .. But with Venture Lows... Everything works perfectly , and I'm the only one in the park who has Venture , which makes me feel special .

Same here. I just got the V-Hollow Lights low 5.0 and I really like how they feel while skating. Tbh I expected much less turn, then I got after watching some Venture Reviews. A friend of mind got some cheap Destructo trucks which ride really solid, so I expected more of this type of riding. Neverthless I really like them so far!

@@dannybrandon2822 I know Ventures turn fine . Sure Thunders and Indys turn more , but Venture will be fine 99% of the time , Only in very sudden turns they won't turn enough but you can still kickturn . And usually after kickturns I bust out manuals so I get extra cool points with Venture :P

Had some Jack Curtain Ventures and they had super hard white bushings and they didn't turn (and I got used to it) they had a weird colorway so I gave that setup to a poor adopted kid thinking I would just get me a set of silver Ventures and no biggie I was so surprised when they showed up in the mail with those see thru red bushings all soft and squishy and loose and they turned just not all that well , I tried to replace the bushings with bones hard but again because of the shape they still didnt turn right so I got some Indy bushings w? a cylindrical bottom and a barrel top and they turned (or didnt) like the old Jack Curtains. Come to find out on Slap that a team rider for Venture also replaces his bushings with Indy and swears by em. Love the vids keep em coming

Hey Ben I have bones hard bushings and was able to fit them in my Venture lows with the trucks original top and bottom washer, I also put the extra washer that bones includes under the bottom bushing. So it goes: original bottom venture washer>bones washer>bottom bushing>top bushing> original top washer.
I originally put them on per the instructions, but felt like it made the board really aggressive and unstable so I switched it up.
I’m 240lbs and have only been skating for a couple weeks hence why I didn’t want a loose truck for wheel bite etc..
Will this bushing set up affect anything negatively?

Have been looking at all of the 5.2 lows for a fair while but since I’ve already have a pair of Indie 139 Standards and some 147 Thunder Hollow Lights II I wasn’t going to get a pair. But then early this week I saw a deal that was around 60% cheaper and pounced. Now I have a truck that is even lower than the Thunders yet retain that hefty weight of the Indies. That’s going to be an interesting ride.

I have to say that I was very impressed with my Vs! Turning wasn't so bad for me - maybe the Highs have a bit more room for turning? Manuals were a piece of piss on these & it shortened my wheelbase even smaller than Indy's do, & for me being a short guy this is great as it helps my board pop a little faster!

Growing up in small town Indiana there was only one BICYCLE shop in town that carried any skateboard gear at all and that consisted of spitfire classics (off-white), bones reds, black diamond griptape and mini logo blanks in about 4 different colors and as cheaply made as they were they were not cheap (40 bucks in 1996). So... when you saw a dude riding one you just knew something unexpected had happened to his real board and he had to decide whether to spend 50 on a decent deck from ccs and wait 10 days to skate again or had down to Bickles and skate a mini logo immediately and it was the saddest bit of understanding...

low trucks equal more board feel I'm sure.. everyone rides high for higher pop... anyways I miss my low ventures it was truly snappy for fliptrix. now I'm on low Indy's with a 7.875 polar deck. 50mm wheels and hard bones bushings.. kingpin clearance for bushings and plates is a struggle on low trucks. I'm a 90's rider. I shall buy ventures again soon. however grinding down my Indy's have brought that light feeling and the kingpin clearance is alot better on Indy's. Indy's do look the better truck for sure

Happy with my aces so I don’t think I’ll ever ride them

      Conor Judge that’s why.
I’ve always wanted ventures cause they’re cool. But since rising aces I can’t imagine ever getting a set of ventures

I think that if you put the non-forged baseplate that will help with the wheelbite. Me too i was putting washer under the bones bushing!!!!

You can simply put the raiser pads instead, it can prevent from pressure cracks and better absorb the impact while landing tricks.

loved ventures as i prefer really tight trucks. i had a few baseplates break on me over the years though, was when i was younger n jumping down decent size stuff though. bought some thunders a few years back for street board n they've served me very well since, very good truck for people that like em tight i reckon. Bought some indies for a bigger bowl or vert deck. Feel a little less stable on em than the thunders, maybe just due to bigger setup? or dunno if indies just turn more whereas i prefer less turning trucks.

Ben you gotta do the 144mm indys? I feel like no one skates them but they are awsome, i cant stand 139 indys on 8 board then i need thunders. 144mm feels so good on 8.25 and they are not as heavy as the 149, i dont know if people just dont really know about them.

I know it probably takes a while to review decks but you should review a ccs blank deck. I just picked one up for $24.00 bc i am very broke. Have not swapped it in yet but I guess I'm curious to see if it is actually the same quality of a name brand deck.

How do you not get insane wheelbite with lows and decent size wheels? I got some Tensor magnesium lows and I put them on with riser pads and tightened them with bones bushings and I couldn't use 52mm wheels with them, the wheelbite was so bad that landing any trick was like hitting a pebble. They work with my 47mms but I want a bigger wheel for street.

    • @gromitmitten7803
      @gromitmitten7803 6 років тому

AD1 I recommend adding some venom downhill bushings to the tensors low. It helped tremendously with wheelbite and just the overall feel of the low 5.75s I had. 52mm was the biggest I was able before wheelbite became an issue. Have fun!

I found myself comfortable riding 8inch decks also. The problem is there is only one company I know of that has offers an 8 inch deck with a wheelbase bigger than 14.25. Real is the only company I know that offers 8 inch decks with a 14.38 wheelbase. So if you like a larger wheelbase, one bigger than 14.25 on an 8 inch deck your choices are limited.

DGK definetly has 8'' decks with like 14.5'' wheelbase. I think I remember seeing even sth like 14.9'' wb on a DGK deck.

I really want to try that venture lows 5.2 and put in my bones medium bushing. Im just not sure how will it feel when it comes to turning

    • @00010075

for what it's worth, I've been riding the venture low 5.2's from 2012-current exclusively with the bones medium bushings. Instead of keeping the bottom washer on like Ben, I put the og top washers on (not the thin washer that comes with the bone bushings). I absolutely love them! Personally I like looser trucks so I only tighten them down just enough for the nut to be flush with the kingpin threads. I think they turn great and I never had issues with them cracking.
