Wow Ty for the series it's great when people share there experience with others I'd love to see how our ancestors sharpened the razors and what there edge would of looked like cheers
Hey DrMatt357 - thank you so much! I've been struggling for years with cheap hones, and pulled the trigger on a Coticule a couple of years ago thinking it would solve all my problems. I had exactly the same issues as you using slurry like it says in the instruction! I just watched your 3 part series, and tried it again with no slurry, and have just experienced my best shave from any previous hones. I feel I'm on the right track thanks to you, still got a lot to learn, but wow, this is a step change for me! Regards from the UK.
Cheers. I'm experimenting with a little trans Ark following other finishers...seems to produce pretty nice results. FWIW, stumbling on these videos inspired me to pick up my first coticule from Jarrod. Will definitely try the slurry-less technique when I get the stone. Thanks for sharing these videos.
Hi Dr Matt. Thanks for making this series definitely did learn a thing or 2 about using my coticules. Speaking of cheating, I do sometimes go from a coticule to a Jnat with very light slurry. I believe that the entire progression does somewhat reflect the finish. For example. When I do a one stone hone using my Mikawa nagura set followed by a tomo the edge is a lot more comfortable than just doing a synthetic progression then tomo nagura. Also I have a 7 Jnat progression from soft to hard, when I use that, again it's different. I wouldn't be good at explaining the exact theory but I believe that each progression plays a small part in the finish after a bit of experimenting, I found that the edges look slightly different too on different progressions with the same finisher. Thanks again.- Mark
Thank you for posting such great information! I am reading online that black ark stone is the finest of arks, have you tried any black ark stone after coticule?
I ended up with a coticule in a box of oil stones from a old tool box. I had no idea what I had and used it as a fine grit oil stone for all of my hand tools. Never understood why my edges ended up so nice. A little time in the dishwasher pulled the oil out and it works great in water now.
You've forgotten Part IV: THE SHAVE ! Yes, I know that you've posted a link in another video where you can see a shave by your friend, but I 'd love to see YOUR shave with the YOUR cuticle technique. It would be really cool!! XD
dr matt, if I would have to choose between an ILR or a coticule which stone would it be? For optimal use, what are the ideal measurements for a finishing stone? (in mm or cm?)
They polish as they abrade or cut!! They are slow but they are a hell of a finisher!! It just takes about 75 more laps, and it beats the hell out of a coticle!!
Hi Matt, as always great video.. Enjoyed it ! Could you please give us the reference of this translucent stone you're talking about ?, here can we buy it, if you prefer you can pm me.. Thanks so much.
Chris Picking - The Trans Ark. I bought from an individual. Don't know of any vendors that have them. The one I have is a vintage one sold by Norton. They're out there. Check eBay.

I know this is from a while ago but I do have a black Ark. video where I do just that.
Greatly enjoyed your coticule series. I have my Dad's barber's hone he used in his barber shop. Would your coticule technique apply to that also?
Most likely it would Jerry. Email me a picture of it and I could tell you more definitively.
Thank you for your series on the coticules. I definitely am going to get one and try it.
Thanks Leon. There is a fourth or update video to the series. Check my channel.
Another great series of video's.
Nice vintage Norton hard ark haha, I want it! Love Arkansas honing, can't wait to try it with my coti arriving tomorrow.

I know many guys who use oil. It works fine. I just find it a bit messy and the clean up is a pain.
Awesome series Doc. Thanks

Thanks for posting. Great info!
I use the suehiro 20k after any finishing stone and it does improve naturals and synthetics
Cheater! LOL
+drmatt357 hehehe! True

More food for thought!
You presented the most complete series on razor sharpening razors that I've found on YT. BTW, what kind of doc? I'm betting DC.
Mike B - Thank you and... Correct-Amundo!!
@@drmatt357 Knew it. Me too. Are you part of Mark Studin's group, Academy of Chiropractic? You look kind of familiar.
@@mikeb7914 - I was many years ago for a very short time. I got tired of his "The Sky Is Falling" mentality. It was exhausting!
Do you flatten the coticules?
Have you shown the microscope image after the Shapton and before the Coticule?
I don't know if I have in the series but I have plenty on my computer if you'd like to see them. email me: drmatt357@hotmail.com
Huuum. Soap/Glycerine....
So, when/what time to do this?
After or before to put the coticule in the running water and the stone get sticky?
After Bruno if you want. These are just a few things some people do to go even further than running water.
A car shampoo would have a much higher lubricating ratio than dish soap if you wanna try something weirder
White toothpaste polishes pretty well too
I'm curious...how far do you go on the Arkansas after your coticule edge?
Only 20-30 passes as it gets really sticky. You can add a drop of dish soap and that will get you even further.

I know you put up your email a while ago, I just want to make sure you're still ok with it
drmatt357 is there any way I can get you to email me or pm me? I have a few questions I'd like to bounce off of you regarding finishing with cotis

going to finish watching this but the smith honing oils is terrible product that should not be used on the stones.
Kyle Kelly Don't know about the Smith oils but this is a water based product that rinses right off.
Why not?
