This is a great idea I would have never thought of this. My brother is trying to do the same! He wanted to use a road till to get the grass out and replace it with wild flowers. It would be a lot of work, but your idea is smart. Cardboard is biodegradable and it saves on throwing it in the trash. I will definitely be telling him this idea.
I am looking forward to seeing you bring down those bricks from the fireplace. You are both always hard at work. Keep up the great things you are doing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜

Not unlike yourselves, I take advantage of the tree trimmers mulch as much as possible. They will become your best friends if they know you're receptive of receiving it. It's my understanding, they struggle to find a place to dispose of it. Mulch has unlimited uses, love your resourcefulness. Peace...

My uncle bought an old house in the country near Cardiff. Behind a wall he found a raffle ticket dated 1910. It was for a shotgun being raffled among other items to raise funds for an injured farmer who was no longer able to work

At first when I saw 👀 you collapsing the cardboard I thought that you were going to toss it. I thought "no" you should use it to kill off any grass area you don't want. THEN, as I watched further that is exactly what you ended up doing. All the larger pieces of cardboard have so many purposes, even laying down on the floor in areas that you are renovating. Use them as drop clothes.

I think your riding lawn mower would come in handy on many jobs around your place, you can buy a wagon for the back of it & load it up with the mulch or whatever & drive it to where you need it!We have a little 4 runner that has a wagon that hooks to it for that purpose,& my husband also built a wooden box for the front & back so that he can get our wood from where it is stored to our back door,so many options!Love seeing you two working together, reminds me of my mom & I remodeling her 130 old house she lived in at the time!

Oh my gosh, your wildflowers were from California, being poppies and such. We just had a massive wild flower bloom in California due to a lot of rain in the Winter and Spring. California has many different ecosystems because of how diverse it is. There are hot desserts, mountains with pine trees and snow, semi-desert areas, fertile valleys, coastal beach areas, with some being all pebbles and cliffs, while others being smooth and sandy. I believe there are 13 different ecosystems, making a huge variety of plants and animals.

YES!! Amazon boxes can be a real pain in the rear!! I also live out in the country (Sweden) and order most of what I buy off of Amazon. I had no idea what to do with all of the BOXES that I had left over from my purchases. That is until I'd watched a few gardening DIY uploads on UA-cam.
Since my homestead/property is a forest property AND it is located on bedrock with only about 1 ft. of soil before hitting "the mountain" and being that it used to be forest and still is surrounded by forest, I have dense thick roots crisscrossing all throughout my yard/garden area. A pain to dig to remove the roots, not to forget all the WEEDS that were what is supposed to be my lawn...
The video/upload said to place a thick layer cardboard on top of the "grass" where you wanted to create your garden/vegetable bed, frame it with wooden boards and then add good soil on top of the cardboard, to which ever level depth you want. Of course, if you want it to be deep, you need to add as many boards in height as you want. This will kill off all the weeds as well as the cardboard adding to the benefit of the soil.
Same as you can use the smaller cardboard boxes, rip them up in smaller pieces and add them to your compost pile. Without the freakin plastic that they seem to love... I totally hate that plastic!! Plain uncolored cardboard and not shiny in your compost every few levels, will also add to the nutrients when it decomposes and your chickens will help in rooting around in the compost, mixing it while hunting after grubs, which in turn, lowers your feed bill for the chickens... Win win all around.

What you're doing with your wildflowers idea is wonderful!!! I have neighbors (I live in the country) who mow ALL of their acreage even though they don't even use it. I so wish they would allow it to grow into meadowland for the wildlife, especially bees! It upsets me to see all of it mowed so unnecessarily.

Hi I love watching your videos. Alex I wouldn't touch that wooden framework or the bricks in the fire place without consulting a structural engineer. Who knows that framework may be part of what is holding up the ceiling in your room. I'd take off a bit more of the plasterboard above the fireplace to make sure the bricks above the fireplace are the original bricks and also that the "transom" ( may be wrong word) that used to be holding the bricks above in place, is still there. But that's just me. Maybe being over cautious.

I should think that the facing on the fireplace would be idea for installing the tiles you find mud larking and digging. A few drops of oil are easily obtained for the barrow by taking it over by your car and pulling out the dip stick and letting the oil drops fall into the wheel axle area. Trick also works great on the car door hinges too.

That fireplace holds promise... I wonder if there will be a proper space behind! And those beds will look beautiful, though pine mulch tends to be quite acidic, so wildflowers native to acidic would thrive. You probably have them growing around you...Agrimony, Lady's Bedstraw, Betony, Meadow Buttercup, Common Cat's-ear, Cornflower, Ox-eye Daisy, Foxglove, Knapweed, Ragged Robin, Wood Sage, Devil's-bit Scabious, Sneezeworth, Common sorrel, Sheep's sorrel. All of these like a low ph.

Ladies ladies ladies you both deserve medals for all the work you do.
I look forward to seeing the fireplace bricks come out, amazing find there Alex.
Love the wild flower patch idea it a great use of the mulch. I
I remember arranging with tree trimmers years ago for the mulch to be sent to an allotment that I helped out at, I also remember shovelling 20+ wheel barrows full of it to create more stable ground on the paths in between 6 huge veg beds. Hard work really does pay off so huge pat on the back to both of you. I haven’t watched your content for a while as I have been super busy however I’m dedicating some time to binge watch the videos I’ve missed over the next few days 🙂 xx

I wonder if you should paint your room as a break from the fireplace deconstruction.

Do you have an architectural scrap yard or antique store near you. Even a charity shop or salvage yard. They might have the pieces for your fireplace that you are missing or something similar to use at a lower cost. I am sure everything will love the wild flowers including the schoos.
