I've wanted to make this video for a long time, and I hope you enjoyed it, even though it was not Magic: The Gathering. While I would love to SOMETIMES talk about board games and other nerdy things in the future, I do want to emphasize that this channel is primarily a Magic: The Gathering channel, and that videos like this are fun little treats that I may do from time to time.
Tolarian Community College As one of your bosses, man you've got a lot of us now, I approve of this video and future non MTG videos as well. I like board games as well as MTG so reviews for other game products helps me just as much as MTG. And this video really captured how confusing I felt when I played Star Trek Catan at Origins last year. So many better Cantan Variants.
Tolarian Community College If you want a Sci-Fi themed Catan game, I would recommend the spinoff game Starfarers of Catan. The aesthetic design is overall better and there are so much more new mechanics not found in the original game! Seriously I think you should play Starfarers of Catan and see how it compares to Star Trek Catan. It's not officially Star Trek but I sure enjoyed it! Edit: In this game, you actually MOVE SHIPS to places instead of building "ship chains".
"Sir, we are running out of things to eat. The crew is dying! What do we do?" *looks out window* "Hey, I think I see a McDonalds on that planet! Let's go!" I'm with you on this one, Professor. FOOD? SERIOUSLY?
What this game does evoke is the image of the Enterprise carefully synchronizing its orbit around a gigantic yellow planet, to dock with a space station shaped like two giant golden arches. Everyone on the crew pools together their orders and spare change, and they send an away team to pick up the hamburgers. And then a red shirt dies of food poisoning.
Awesome first board game review! This review is going to help me out in my future, for sure, as I may have purchased this over the original. Thanks Professor!
Tolarian Community College I'm ashamed to say i don't own Catan yet, also, will boardgames reviews become regular or is it just something you wanted to do to warn people from buying this particular one?
Ohh! Very interesting, I like the diversifying into board games. I mean, there is a limit to how many MTG expansions and products you can review each month. But board games are many, varied and sadly often not worth the price. If The Professor is going to continue helping us geeks choose quality merchandise outside card games, I'm all for it!
I can see your points and criticisms as valid, especially the lack of thought in designing the board pieces. However, my interpretation of the ships as roads is that they represent standard patrols of that space, signifying that trade is possible.
I didn't even know Catan existed before today, but still I really enjoy the video, you're the kind of person i'd listen to all day long. You have to be a great teacher :)
I'm liking how thorough your board game review is, even though I already own plenty of games, I would still like to see more. I also enjoy that you threw the D&D starter kit in at the end, I usually refer to that as 'D&D the Board Game'.
You missed the changes in it. Board set up is different, the amount of city and towns are different and how you can level them up, as well as the obvious 'hero cards' (support cards) It's the combination of the 3 that lead to more rounded games.
Oh heck yes, more videos like this PLEASE! I have Star Trek Catan. I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. My wife isn't fond of Catan, and we live an annoying distance from friends, so having four people together doesn't come up often. After watching this, I'm glad it was a gift. There are so many locations they could have used. Triskelion? The Mutara Nebula? Dammit, Mayfair Games, give me a reason to say "What does god need with a starship?". You've got 79 episodes of TOS, 22 episodes of TAS, and six freaking feature films! That's TONS of content, even if you didn't want to delve into the novels and comics, or Next Generation and beyond. Dilithium is also traditionally shown as being pink or purple! Not a canister of green glowing stuff that you'd think would somehow turn a bunch of turtles into teenage ninjas? Cut Janice Rand some slack though! The poor gal just passed away. The Monopoly card certainly doesn't fit into the TOS/TAS universe. Maybe the Star Trek Online universe, where the Ferengi have joined the Federation...
Congratulations on hitting your goal, professor. I am hoping you don't burn yourself out on promising X amount of videos per week. Stay steadfast, that is the reason people contributed in the first place. I appreciate your enthusiasm for community and your videos helped teach me that buying from Target or Wal-Mart won't support the Magic community. Magic is extremely overwhelming and you helped me get started. Thanks so much for these great videos!
This was a great video branching out from your UA-cam roots as a Magic: The Gathering channel, Tolarian Community College. I found it insightful and your presentation of the product in this case, "Star Trek Catan" to be grade A material. I look forward to seeing more reviews of games in your collection. I'd be willing to send you a copy of a Milton-Bradley attempt at a classic TSR style board game that I have for review with a self-addressed label for return shipping and be willing to provide communication for its return and money for its return. The game in question is "Hero Quest".
Great job on this video. I wondered if you would ever make videos on something not magic like you mentioned in a previous video. Request: would you consider doing a video on D&D and how to get started playing it? Keep up the good work professor
Thank you for this video professor. If you are looking for a space exploration themed board/card game I was wondering if you have ever tried the game: Eminent Domain? It captures the feel of surveying for new planets to explore. Then you decide to go the peaceful route and colonize or the not peaceful war route of conquering the planet. Once you have attained (either colonized or conquered) the planet you surveyed you can then build up a research engine or interstellar sort of marketplace to score victory points. In the end each planet you colonize or conquer scores you a set number of victory points to go with your research and marketplace vistory points you can earn. Whomever scores the most victory points wins. It scratches the itch for me of a space themed exploration game and is also fun for me pesonally as I enjoy deck builder games that have a small board game component to them. If you are looking for a game like this then I would recommend checking it out and if enjoying it - to give the expansion a try. Grade from me A-. The small detraction comes in the fact that the original game does not (or did not when I first played it) automatically come with a some small subset of planet cards known as "Prestige planets" which are highly point driven and have little to no usefulness in terms of the planet contributing to a marketplace nor aiding your research. Had it automatically come with them (I recommend them) then the game would be a solid A. I would happily watch a review of your take on Eminent Domain should it be of some interest to you. Thank you for all your hard work on your channel. I find this and all your videos to be very valuable! Thank you!
Even though this video makes VERY valid points about the breaking of theme and blandness of the components in ST:Catan, I'd still rather play this version than that 90s children's bible art Settlers of Blechh.
While I'd like to see MOSTLY MTG, I was also not disappointed to see this in my feed. I think your review style lends itself well to coverage of games as a whole...and you've built up a good deal of credibility from your reviews of products by actually broadcasting the testing just as much as the actual review. I think you could probably do a review of a game every 4th to 5th video without really disappointing anyone.
Good video. I look forward to more of these. I think it's good to branch out into other traditional gaming topics if you are going to be doing more videos now
I've been waiting for this ever since it was mentioned in that podcast you did. It's a cool supplement to your usual content. Would you care to rank the captains? And if you want a thematic space opera, look at the nightmare that is Twilight Imperium.
That reminds me of some really old games i used to play, one is literally called space opera, which is a sci fi version of dnd. And another one is called leviathan, which was a starship battle game. Both of these were fun to play.
I work at my local game store and I always use star trek catan as an exemple to point out the difference between typical Europian games and American Games. American games deliver on flavor, a nice glossy board, beautiful art work, a greath theme and often (not always!) compansade by not putting enough resorces in delivering good rules. European games deliver a very tactical challenge, and are often games baced on resorce management, they do however fail on delivering a good theme, and most games end up being about medieval farmers. For instance, Catan, one of the most well known European style games, is able to throw out there intire medieval theme and replace it with star trek, with out changing anything rules wise. For the last 15 years or so, you see greath Europian style games from the states, like Dominion or Ticket to Ride. Or very flavorfull American style games from Europe.
I like to collect good tabletop games, so coming across others who love tabletop games is always a treat. Really enjoyed the vid, and hope that more will be coming.......in addition to more MTG vids of course :-). Some pen and paper D&D vids perhaps?
this was super phoned in. there was potential for so much variety. like each player being a different race. Starfleet, Klingons, Romulans, Cardies? the Robber could be a Borg Cube.
Even though I am not a die hard fan of Star Trek, or Catan. I still found this to be useful if I indeed wanted to purchase this in the future. So, yes, it was of some help to me indeed. Thanks!
Hey professor will you be doing a deck box or binder review soon I enjoy your reviews very much. I purchased the ultimate guard deck box flip n tray and xeno skin zipfolio just due to your reviews and not disappointed as of yet :)
There is a extension for this one where you have a board (no board pieces like catan). You have more options. But still the same plastic pieces and unlogical source cards because you use everything from the base game
Love the episode, I think I wouldn't mind a longer episode if there's a few expansions being explained I do want to know about the rest of the sellers series I played it once I enjoyed it I don't know if I want to spend all that money on all all the things I hope you will continue to help me make good decisions on many of the products for my cardboard... And now board games, awesome
Wish I had seen this before I bought Star Trek Catan. My family played once, was extremely disappointed in the experience, and it has lived on the game shelf, undisturbed, since then. On a more positive note, we bought it at Gen Con, and it was really fun to see Wil Wheaton unfairly/appropriately win the tournament that was played with oversized pieces.
Great video! Excellent and funny review! I'd like to point out, though, that if you buy a new box of Catan today, you don't get the wooden settlements and roads. They are all plastic now. Compared to those the Star Trek ones are fine.
Hey professor, since you looked at something other than magic im wondering, whats your opinion on the new Force of Will tcg, from what ive seen and played its just like a smaller version of edh .
im a total catan nerd. i have reg. catan, cities and knights expansion, and the $150 15th anniversary edition. so excited when i saw that tcc loves catan too
Is it worth going to a draft or even sealed for MM15? I'm pretty new to MTG, been playing for only 3weeks, but I learned a lot. I don't think Id do particularly good in any event but I like collecting cards. It still is a lot of money, since Im just a casual player so Im debating whether to go or not, because MM is only every 2 years. Please help.
I would love to see you make a new channel for just this kind of thing. Especially when people want a break from magic. They can just pop over to the Professor's Table Top Lounge. Value the input on this. Thinking about trying net runner for instance. Is that worth picking up.
Please professor give us more tips on how to build a cube, I was finishing up mine but I wont buy the most expensive cards until you finish your series on how to build a cube because I may change something.
I got this as a present. My sister found it cheap. I already had Catan and I didn't see the need for another. I gifted it to them so they had a Catan they could play.
If you are doing videos on games other than magic the gathering, i hope you do videos on accessories for those games, such as storage boxes for games that have a large number of expansions or sleeves for odd sized/odd shaped cards. I'd especially love to see one for the sleeves, as a number of games I own that use cards (Dominion, Discworld, Once Upon a Time etc) have cards that are of a size and shape that are unsuitable to Magic sized sleeves,
I have the dragon shield yellow sleeves. I think I might be doing something wrong because the sleeves are bending in the corners and have chips on them on the side and can be ripped easily.
At the very least, each color could have been a different faction from the show. One player plays the Federation with Constitution class starships. Another player plays the Klingons with D7 Cruisers. A third player plays the Romulans with Birds of Prey. And the 4th player could be ... um ... the Tholians, I guess? And the Robber could have been an Orion Pirate.
If you like deck building games I'd suggest marvel legendary or dc deckbuilder. My girlfriend and I recently bought the resident evil deck building game with all the expansions for 85 as a bundle at my lgs so the jury is out on that one. We also have pandemic, smash up, munchkin, king of tokyo, sentinels of the multiverse, and all the expansions for each because im a completionist. I enjoyed this thoroughly. Maybe you could do a sponsored video for mass drop or something bi weekly to make this a new segment. Keep up the hard work!
I like the video, professor! Would you do a video reviewing Munchkin? It is a very funny parody of role playing games. Also, my LGS has started selling a brand of sleeves and deck boxes called DEX Protection. Would you review those sleeves and deck boxes as well? Thanks!
Oh nuts, he is doing Board Games now that is so great thank you. I love playing all games but it is so hard to get people to play or really do anything with me at times I don't know why but sometimes it makes me think that everybody hates me or something. Too bad this really doesn't do anything with Catan except give it a little Star Trek flair and by that I mean a little flair. Last thing I really liked how you popped in more and made both points and jokes.
Tolarian Community College If I'd ever been a fan of Star Trek, I'd more than likely feel the same way. My only exposure to Levar Burton was Reading Rainbow. There we go. Reading Rainbow Catan. I'd play that.
D&D Starter Kit! Please Review it Professor, I've recently been looking to get into D&D. Also a "How to start playing D&D" video would be super appreciated!
This was a thorough review and reflects the quality and impartiality that make your reviews stand out. I, as many other Magic players I'm sure, am a player and fan of the Catan series of games. However, Magic is the reason I come to your channel. I worry as you pursue the allure of critiquing the offerings of nerd culture in general, you dilute the specific flavor that satisfies my, and presumably others', thirst. I was really hoping to see you tackle the controversy over retail cost v. secondary market value of the upcoming Modern Masters 2015 set or review some artisan version of some accessory I hadn't heard of before. I realize a lot of people have asked you to branch out in other direction, but as you pointed out in your first Twitch stream, (paraphrased) there are many other channels that specialize in those other things and have perfected their niches. Maybe not the review you offer for this product, but certainly this type of product in general. Of course, this was the first non-Magic relevant video you've posted, and maybe it'll just be a once in a while occurrence. Or maybe mine is a minority opinion and most people are equally interested in seeing non-Magic content. Based on the comments so far, that certainly seems possible. For me, this is a distraction
Tolarian Community College it, please give us more :D
And congratzlations with the succesful Patron ^^ :D :D
Maybe make a new channel where you review more games. Just an idea that came to mind professor.
Professor can you do kmc super series vs dragon shield regular and kmchypermat vs dragon shield flat
Tolarian Community College As one of your bosses, man you've got a lot of us now, I approve of this video and future non MTG videos as well. Love this addition to your channel. You already are a trusted source for reviews so expanding to other products is win/win for everyone. Well done!
Awesome first board game review! This review is going to help me out in my future, for sure, as I may have purchased this over the original. Thanks Professor!
Kainius The Great Original is awesome. Get the original.
Tolarian Community College I'm ashamed to say i don't own Catan yet, also, will boardgames reviews become regular or is it just something you wanted to do to warn people from buying this particular one?
I second this, very dissapointing, but good to know.
Thanks professor
I like this new trend of videos I think it's a great idea and I will be telling all my friends to tune in.
I really like the idea of board game reviews! Keep them coming, Professor.
So glad you decided to do a boardgame video!
YES!!!! more games reviews! I love it!
Very informative video as always.
I love your 1st boardgame video =)
Very good review. It's cool seeing you expand into things other than MTG every now and again.
Hoping to see more boardgame content in the future. The channel is growing in a good direction. :)
I didn't have a copy of Catan, so I picked up ST Catan at Target on clearance for 25 bucks. For me, it was an easy decision.
The same with me. I don't care what people say Star Trek catan is a fun game and a nice break from the norm
Ohh! Very interesting, I like the diversifying into board games. I mean, there is a limit to how many MTG expansions and products you can review each month.
But board games are many, varied and sadly often not worth the price. If The Professor is going to continue helping us geeks choose quality merchandise outside card games, I'm all for it!
The way you review things works very well for board games. Can't wait to see more.
This is hands down my favourite version of Catan. Little tweaks make all the difference.
You missed the changes in it.
Board set up is different, the amount of city and towns are different and how you can level them up, as well as the obvious 'hero cards' (support cards)
It's the combination of the 3 that lead to more rounded games.
Also, thumbs down for the game not having Latinum.
"Fails to offer any new game play".....said right after complaining about the new game play.
I agree. His reiew was not good. He missed out on so much.
I always see this game at my local game shop and, as a fan of Catan and Trek, have wondered about it. Glad to find this review. Thanks, Prof!
KUDOS PEOFESSOR!! You are covering everything that I love!! MTG and STAR TREK!!! AWESOME keep them comming!!!
Outta the park Professor. Keep em coming.

I like the idea of you doing board games! Great video!
Prof, I wish you did more of these board game "is it worth it" videos. Your critical analysis works well for board games.
OH MY GOD YES! Something other than MTG!
I love love love your MTG videos, but I also LOVE seeing you branch out to other things! Go Professor!
Yes! very excited to see you branch into some other cool games!
Thanks! I follow you for the MTG, but this video really helped me!
I never played Catan but I loved the game review. Can't wait to see more.
This channel has made a magnificent step in the right direction
You should have done the review holding your Worf mug.
Mrtfarrugia Damn it. You're right.
Tolarian Community College You can even find raktajino recipes online.
I kind of liked that you changed things up. I got interested in this channel because of magic, but I like board games too.
Great job on this video. I wondered if you would ever make videos on something not magic like you mentioned in a previous video. Request: would you consider doing a video on D&D and how to get started playing it? Keep up the good work professor
I enjoyed the video! I hope you do some more reviews of games on occasion to mix things up a little.
Thank you for this video professor. If you are looking for a space exploration themed board/card game I was wondering if you have ever tried the game: Eminent Domain? I would happily watch a review of your take on Eminent Domain should it be of some interest to you. Thank you for all your hard work on your channel. I find this and all your videos to be very valuable!
Thank you!
YES !!!! OTHER REVIEWS !!!! This is what I've wanted :D Awesome video !!! and yeah... I LOVE CATAN !!!
If you are a Star Trek nerd like myself, I love this. Play it a ton
The record scratch on food resource and your face were priceless. Made me laugh for real
Even though this video makes VERY valid points about the breaking of theme and blandness of the components in ST:Catan, I'd still rather play this version than that 90s children's bible art Settlers of Blechh.
More of these types of videos - yes, please.

SO glad you're doing Board Game reviews. I have considered this game and I'm glad I waited. The original is clearly the way to go.
Yes yes yes! More boardgame reviews. This is great
This was perfect for me, my family was just discussing whether to get this or vanilla Catan!
Good video. I look forward to more of these. I think it's good to branch out into other traditional gaming topics if you are going to be doing more videos now
OMG! Absolutely can not wait for Boss Monster! I think its good, but I want to see what you have to say about it!
I've been waiting for this ever since it was mentioned in that podcast you did.
It's a cool supplement to your usual content.

I won't be buying Star Trek Catan but I did get some solid entainment from your video!

Also post this on the board game geek website. I'm sure they will appreciate the opinion. Thanks again for the video.

The board game reminds me of the original series. It uses the same planet over and over again with a different tint... Aaahhh the good ol' days.
Hey professor! You should make some instructional videos on how to play some of these games!
I was wondering wether to buy one or not so thanks for this review.
I got this as a present. My sister found it cheap. I already had Catan and I didn't see the need for another. I gifted it to them so they had a Catan they could play.
I dint own catan yet and thought about getting this, glad I watched. I think I will buy classic and leave myself open to getting expansions
"The Professor Rips Apart Star Trek Catan"
BrokenChampion Food. I mean...COME ON!
Great! Loved this video, never played Catan, but looks a lot like Carcassone?
Bagend123 Very different gamestyle. Carcassone is another favorite of mine.
Thanks! What about Catan Trails to rails? :)
If you are interested in using the support cards from Star Trek Catan in the original game, take a look into the Helpers of Catan scenario.
This should have been called "Catan: The Marble Game" based on how the boards look put together.
Thank you
Can you do a review of the KMC Hypermatte Premium?
Hey Professor, mind doing a review on Tzolkin? It's a pretty good boardgame.
To be fair the catan expansions have boats that are used almost exactly like the spaceships
Gary Leavitt Also, maybe I should read your introductory comments before I spout off about a sentiment you have already addressed. Carry on.
Woah, thanks Professor. You saved me forty bucks.
Nuts. What a disappointment. Well, thanks for saving me the cash, it's an extra dominion expansion for me!
