  • In this video, Phil Spencer looks at the decision of Lee Carsley to call Morgan Rogers up to the England national team for the fixtures with Greece and Ireland.
Rogers left Middlesbrough FC in January 2023 to join Aston Villa, just six months after arriving from Man City.
But after conquering the Premier League and Champions League, Rogers will now represent the Three Lions - something that could offer a huge financial windfall to Michael Carrick's team.

Was Morgan Rogers a good piece of business for Middlesbrough? Comment below and leave your thoughts!

The first thing that I noticed about Rogers was his attitude. When AV first started sniffing around, I told one of their forums this lad has undoubted ability, but also has his head screwed on. I remember the 2nd leg against Chelsea, his head never dropped and probably scored the goal of the game. He deserves all he gets, and as a role model for others, he really stands out.

Absolutely right. You don't improve at the rate he has unless you're humble and willing to learn and take advice from those around you. He's clearly done that at Middlesbrough and Aston Villa and the results are clear to see!

In hindsight Boro have obviously been short changed via the fee, but the biggest win from the Roger Morgan episode is a massive neon sign flashing "Boro - we turn unspectacular Blackpool loanees into Internationals in just six months, come to us", and thus we have lured Conway (offered more money by Hull), Morris, Hamilton and Doak. Roger is free advertising for Boro that could abstractly benefit us more than cash in hand. Keiran Scott needs a statue eventually

A really good way of looking at it. I definitely think our reputation for developing players has helped us to get the 3 you mention!

Excellent business by the looks of it that Phil. I don’t feel so bad now about Morgan leaving.

Top deal for Villa as it has turned out despite many Boro fans saying at the time they had Villa over on the fee, but he's shining for Villa & now an England call he must be worth double probably triple the full fee with add ons & both our clubs have done well out of the deal which keeps a good relationship between our two clubs, good luck with promotion this season, hope to see you back in the Premier league ... Up the fuck'in Villa!!! 😉💜💙💪✌️

I'm so pleased he's doing well for you! What do you think about how Finn Azaz has got on? He's turning into a very good player indeed, in my opinion.

stop chatting S most boro fans didnt want to sell and were not happy with the deal, rogers always showed real potential hence why we put sell on clause for him. So when Rogers goes to a top club we'll get a sweet few million.

@jplester9719 who's talking S ? The boro are a buy low sell high club now the juninho ravanelli days are well gone no a lot of fans didn't want to sell morgan but In our position financially as well as domestically we've no choice hence the morgan transfer so called saga?! Which was a success initially but okay could of been more profitable UTB

was hardly a surprise windfall when it was one of the clauses when we sold him, it was always going to happen

@borodav24 Not sure you can say he was guaranteed to get an England call and play in the Champions League!

Sensible and forward thinking from the Boro Hierarchy. I remember the sell on clauses we had in the past, that created unrest, so they have obviously learnt from the poker game that top level football has become. Saying that. Villa got the better part of the deal by far. UTB

It's never going to be perfect losing a player who had become some important to the team, but with the benefit of hindsight, I think we did well enough out of the deal and reinvested well too.

@@BonkersForBoro, As Carrick said about the deal, " it was beneficial to all parties concerned". I agree with you, we got a massive profit and invested well, and Villa got a player they seen great potential in, and backed their gut feeling. Hindsight is indeed a wonderful thing, and retaining our biggest assets will require reflecting on past deals and who ultimately benefits. I think the way we dealt with Ipswich's advances over the summer proves that.

When we sold him he was the only player showing form, ifvhe hadn't been sold we could well have made the play offs.

@@TertiaryScroat he was certainly our best player in a largely crap fiest half of the season!

He's been a Premier League player longer than he's been a Championship player now - mental, isn't it?!

  • @chrisredmayne

Honestly that's not great still, should be been 15m with 10m add ons. An England cap add on should never be a million, if he makes it to England he's turned into a 30m player at least so it should be MUCH higher! A much better deal for Boro would have been to keep him and get into the play offs last year... But if he wanted to leave I guess there's not much you can do these days

    • @BonkersForBoro
      @BonkersForBoro  2 місяці тому

It's true, you can't stand in a player's way if he wants to move. As for the fee, I know in hindsight we can say he is worth much more but less than a year ago there were doubts about whether he was ready for the PL - he was still very raw and far from the finished article!

Nice sell on clause will also be triggered soon i suspect when he joins top club hes too good for Villa.
