I saw The Carpenters live in New Jersey about 1974. Karen was no longer drumming; she stood out front and wore a long red dress. I have never heard such a beautifully expressive voice as hers and doubt if I ever will again. I remembe I was sitting at my desk at work that Winter of 1983 when news came over the radio that she had collapsed and died. I cried then and I still cry when I hear her recorded voice, especially this song. Rest in Peace, Karen. We'll always love you.
51 years have gone by since this beautiful song was released. It will continue to be enjoyed till the end of time. Karen had the voice of an Angel. A voice that was stilled much too young; but will never be forgotten.
What a voice :) No Auto tone or those new fandangled tools they use to record artists today.... Just a beautiful lady singing a beautiful song with a beautiful voice.... You rocked Karen
recorded in 1 take! at 21 years old! singing the lyrics off a napkin! enough said of the greatest most moving rich beautiful intimate haunting female singer of love and romance songs ever!...
+Greg Johnson Excluding the jazz greats - Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, Vaughn, Clooney, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald. Carpenter was a pop singer. You could say she was one of the best in pop OF HER GENERATION. That's about all though.
+J gwynn I think she holds her own against any of those who you named. Just because she's of a different genre doesn't make her any less talented than any of those big names.
+Greg Johnson agreed.. her voice is the most moving, intimate, beautiful rich voice i have ever heard and will ever hear.... she is the EPITOME OF a singer who sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU!... her voice is romance and love, always will be... could have sung anything and made it a "experience"...
+Greg Johnson You're so right Greg; she sang with some of the best and more than held her own, she could read a music sheet, sing and nail it in one take, was better LIVE than anyone I've ever heard and I've been on this planet for going on 7 decades and have heard them all. She gets to your soul like no other, and least we forget what an incredible drummer she was, that places her in rarefied air.
John Lennon once saw Karen sitting on a bench in Central Park.He told her she had a wonderful voice. He also told another famous singer ( I cant remember who ?) that Karen had one of the the best female voices he had ever heard.
This song is haunting and beautiful. It is one of my earliest memories of childhood that I always refer to whenever I feel blue or just want to reminisce. It was an honor to grow up with this in my life. At 47, I just wanna go back sometimes... but, then I think that I can always have Karen with me on my iPod! The Carpenters were the best!!!
this is pure music ,she sings from the heart ,its not that other artists have forgotten how to sing its just plain and simple ,they are not talented like Karen, today its about the money not the music
I cry to. I remember exactly where I was the day she died. At my uncle's house in Arlington, VA. I was 13. I must have listened to Rainy Days and Mondays over and over. I miss her. I miss the days when music was fun.
Karen didn't need any hype to display her immense talent. Not only her beautiful voice, but her ability to feel the words in her renditions. May her voice live on forever
Possibly Karen's greatest recording (among so many other greats), and one of the greatest soft rock ballads of all time, for sure. The combination of Richard's fantastic horn-rich arrangement and Karen's soulful vocal rendition is incomparable.
At age 10 , she was 21 , and I was whooped on Karen , that whooped grew bigger over the next 12 yrs , then at 21 the news left me heartbroken , still I pray the day I leave this earth , and be reacquainted with her heavenly voice. I can listen to her for endless hrs as I drive 18 over 47 states , the calming effect she has on this trucker is beyond what words can explain. When everyone these days seem to be in a driving frenzy to turn their ride into their caskets , Karen so often helps me to keep it all in perspective. Although she left us 31 yrs ago , still she often helps me to find that peace in a mad mad world. The thought of the after life if it exists , makes me wonder if one day , I find her singing in the heavens as heavenly as the day she left us , and it become something to embrace and not fear.
Good stuff. About listening to Karen while driving "on the road," check out Dave Alvin's "Downey Girl" (it's on UA-cam). Written and sung by an aging "alt rocker" who came to appreciate Karen as he matured, and learns to enjoy her "sweet suburban songs" as he drives along the highway "a thousand miles from home." Alvin was from Downey also.
so glad to read someone else loves her like me, I will search her out as well, I need to hold her and assure her everything will be ok , she, s in my life from morning to night , playing constantly , singing , telling me of her lonliness,
There are many female artists or vocalist but only a rare few can claim to have the best vocals in the world and give heart felt performances. You can't help falling in love instantly with them, you're frozen in time, it's unforgettable. I'm 62 and still admire Karen so much, she irresistible. Other women who have great singing voices, Barbra Streisand, Patsy Cline, Whitney Houston, Mama Cass Elliot, Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton-John, and Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You".
Such a beautiful lady both inside and out. We lost you too soon. Thanks for the great music. You are one of the few who could perform with out a recording.
It saddens me that no one ever talks about karen carpenter and how great she was. u never hear about her being an influence on todays singers. its sad. but then again there is no great talent left in this world.
actually many singers to tout her as both their favorites and a influence, there is a video here on youtube where the list of singers tout her greatness, i love k.d. lang comparing for example her to a "female nat king cole"... allegedly, sinatra said she was the only female he would ever pay money to hear sing, she was the favorite singer of engelbert humperdinck, shania twain, gwen stefani, and more... paul mccartney said she had the greatest female voice in the world when she was alive, john lennon told her, her voice was fabulous", streisand told her she had a 'marvelous instrument"... justin haywood of the moody blues, also like mccartney thought she had the greatest female voice in the world, donna summer loved her, petula clark said she her voice had mystery and had something that she her voice didn't, dionne warwick compared her voice to smoky wood and great that is, so the list goes on and on from other well known singers to today's singers you just have to look for the compliments..
I love THIS performance of Superstar - it's about the best there is of her performing this classic on UA-cam. She's got a bit of life in her on this ,a bit of 'bounce' - her movement is great and she let's herself go, rather than being stitched up (yeah - in spite of the dress!). Richard is 'up front' with the Wurlitzer - not lurking in the shadows and that's good to see. Love her fringy, glossy black hair on this - almost in her eyes and she's clearly loving singing it - and it SHOWS.. I've got the very same vintage electric piano here (in storage). Unmistakeable sound.. Magic stuff - magic period, and yeah. .... unrepeatable.
+jezkn She always looked uncomfortable when she was fronting and not behind the drums. This isn't any exception. Great tune, but she looks wound tight.
+J gwynn Completely disagree - I mean the dress doesn't help, which does 'wind her up tight with those 'Mr Spock' shoulders and wraps her up like an Egyptian mummy. But it's a BEAUTIFUL and relaxed performance. Look at the hand movements at 1:06 leading into her starting to bounce around a bit at 1:14 as the rhythm picks up and the telling facial expressions. Then she swops the mike round to the other hand at 1:48 and starts to sway around a bit there. She really OWNS this performance. It's such a moving song and she FEELS that emotion in it here - you can see it in her face, her movement and her voice.Of course she's 'wound up tight' dress-wise because she's got immense body issues going on under that - and she needs to keep it all under wraps but it's still a wonderful performance. One of her best. And without those unrevealing 'Victorian dresses' -' it just wouldn't be Karen would it?Clearly - others here feel the same too. But she's never going to be doing a 'Rhianna' is she? (and would we want her to)
+J gwynn It had to be this way, because Richard and their manager knew that she was only 5'2" or 5'3", and as the crowds got larger, it was time for her to take a back seat as the band's full-time drummer, and focus more on her vocals, since the drums were obscuring her appearance from the audience. When you are trying to give the audience their money's worth, life in the entertainment industry is a real itch!!!!
I saw them in Raleigh, Greenville and Fayetteville N.C. in the 70's. Love4d them then and love them now. Read her biography. So sad. What a voice. God bless you Karen and Richard. You brought happiness to my life and soul!!! R.I.P. You deserve it!!!!
It's a well known fact that these kind of extremely talented individuals only pass our way but once, although I am happy to say that I have had the hounour to share your songs and your unique singing voice R.I.P Karen.
+Chris Montignani You don't know what you're talking about. Those kinds of slogans aren't evidence-based. There are extremely talented individuals working their entire lives and doing amazing things. Streep's been acting for 40 years, same with Dustin Hoffman. Rolling Stones are practically in their 70s and still working! Jeff Beck and Clapton - in their 70s. Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone. All and many others have enormous bodies of work and were at the top of their games for nearly their entire lives.
Karen Carpenter really knew how to sing and perform. In this song, she holds everything in reserve until about the 3:19 mark, then she "lets loose" there for one note. Contextually, it's brilliant, yet so understated.
Awesome song!! I love it!!! She was a great singer. It's too bad no one could save her. I would hope now a days we could have. But she is at peace and will always be loved by those of us who continue to watch these videos.
You're just a bit younger than me - I fell in love with this song/voice when I was ten or so. This woman's voice can take you places like none other. I long for the (apparent) days of youth & innocence. I've got a large majority of their songs on my ipod as well.
Karen was 20 yrs old when she recorded this. This is a clip from a summer replacement music/variety series called "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" which ran from July 6th to Sept 7th 1971. Superstar was released as a single on August 12, 1971. Never intended to be released as a single, it was just an album cut. DJs starting getting requests to play the song. This demand fueled the Carpenters to release it as a single. It reached its peak, #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1971.
eight people were born AFTER the 70's. good luck in your search for the genesis of music. (if you have been to a wedding in the last 40 years you would most certainly know who the carpenters are)
Probably. He did the majority of the arrangements. He is definitely the underrated part of her success since he really understood how to get the most out of her voice.
I agree "Why did she die?"...but I can't (won't) name someone else instead She is sadly missed by many of us. Believe me if either Paris on Kim died there would be many of their fans very sad........just like us missing Karen Carpenter. Have a nice day Roberto
It's true. And not uncommon in most Carpenters songs to sense that Karen was somehow still holding back, that her voice was so powerful and rich, there was more there if she needed it.
There are no singers with the range of Karen Carpenter in this world today, she was the Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady of her profession, once in a lifetime!
This song is not known, comparing with their other songs. But it gives me such a positive-melancholic and nostalgic feeling. This song was original written by Leon Russell. But Richard rewrote its lyrics for Karen before they released their cover version. "I love you" by Leon means "love" after physical relationship. But "love" by Richard means "being a big fan" of the superstar. I like the lyric version by Carpenters because I can imagine that a girl admires him as a plastic love.

You never heAr a voice like this ever again
Definitely

THERE WILL NEVER EVER BE ANOTHER KAREN CARPENTER, GOD GIFTED HER WITH A VOICE TO SING TO THE HUMAN HEART
Nobody but Karen.....
THE BEST FEMALE VOCALIST IN ANY GENRE OF MUSIC. PERFECTION
GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL KAREN CARPENTER. 🙏🙏🙏❤️🔥♥️
Almost 45 years and this still brings tears to my eyes.
Me too dude.
Me too as well😪
This lady was a Heaven sent Miracle! Nothing wrong with a man crying!
It's kind of amazing that she was only 20 or 21 here and her voice had such a maturity to it.
When she hits the first note of ANY song it almost rips your heart out....or is it just me!?
VirgoSwan58 No, it's not just you.
Good to hear! XXX
Karen had a perfect pitch voice in my opinion and that made her voice AWESOME. Truly one of the few GREATS...
Today's music couldn't compete with this!!!
What a voice :) No Auto tone or those new fandangled tools they use to record artists today.... Just a beautiful lady singing a beautiful song with a beautiful voice.... You rocked Karen
Her transition between octaves is what sets her apart. Those low notes give me chills.
recorded in 1 take! at 21 years old! singing the lyrics off a napkin! enough said of the greatest most moving rich beautiful intimate haunting female singer of love and romance songs ever!...
Best female singer in the history of the planet.

I love it Lily, screaming hyenas, :)
The best love song of Carpenters. Karen was the Elvis female. The biggest diamond voice of world.
Very good, Marcio. The Elvis female! Perfect. Elvis was the greatest singer/entertainer ever, and Karen had the best voice ever! Thanks!
But the Solitaire Karen's version is a very much better version than Elvi's.
John Lennon once saw Karen sitting on a bench in Central Park.He told her she had a wonderful voice. He also told another famous singer ( I cant remember who ?) that Karen had one of the the best female voices he had ever heard.
I think she was the female Sinatra.
Yes
its her hair......heavenly hair.....heavenly everything........
One of the most beautiful songs. Karen had one of most amazing and powerful voices. R.I.P.
Tell me a more beautiful song ever recorded! Amazing! Karen had the best voice I have ever heard on any recording.
Still to date 2013, the most beautiful haunting vocalist I have ever heard, she really was very special!
this is pure music ,she sings from the heart ,its not that other artists have forgotten how to sing its just plain and simple ,they are not talented like Karen, today its about the money not the music
Karen had such a beautiful voice. I could listen all day long.
agree, and i've literally being doing so for decades now.. i always listen to a carpenter song once a day...
Marilyn McCoo and Karen Carpenter probably the two best at that. Listen to "Last Night" if you haven't already ;)
Her signature voice will grace us for all time, lost too soon, but never forgotten
To this day I still miss her beautiful angelic voice. she will forever be loved. Thank You Karen.
Beautiful woman, angelic voice, thank you for sharing your God given talent with us. Gone but absolutely never forgotten
She had a beautiful voice. You don't hear any voices these days like today.
Possibly Karen's greatest recording (among so many other greats), and one of the greatest soft rock ballads of all time, for sure. The combination of Richard's fantastic horn-rich arrangement and Karen's soulful vocal rendition is incomparable.
Even though this was written& performed in the 70,s it has a sound & beat that could stand up to today's music
No, written in 1969 by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett.
Even though? 😀
She had a golden voice and a gentle spirit. Thanks for the memories Karen, your voice lives on. maurive
I could listen to Karen's voice all night long. She was taken from us at such a young age. Rest in peace Karen. You are deeply missed.
At age 10 , she was 21 , and I was whooped on Karen , that whooped grew bigger over the next 12 yrs , then at 21 the news left me heartbroken , still I pray the day I leave this earth , and be reacquainted with her heavenly voice. How can Karen still have the most hunting voice? Way above all the other living diva singers. The Carpenters will rule!
Karen s voice is one of the best female vocals of all time!!!
A great song!!! A Wonderful voice!!!

you talk about a once in a lifetime or two lifetime voice! and a RELIGIOUS experience being on this set and hearing THAT VOICE!...
Una belleza de canción e interpretación, que ha permanecido por años.
Such a beautiful lady both inside and out. We lost you too soon. Thanks for the great music. You are one of the few who could perform with out a recording.
So wonderful. Wish she was singing to me. Thanks.

Great song and great singer too! Classic!
A beautiful, virtual artifact in the history of the American landscape, and continuing.
Wow what a beautiful voice stirs love and emotion in me like no other. Much Love to you Karen RIP X

Their work will endure for ages...
Oh yes. Having produced this, they are immortal.
It's a well known fact that these kind of extremely talented individuals only pass our way but once, although I am happy to say that I have had the hounour to share your songs and your unique singing voice R.I.P Karen.

Sigh. You missed his point.
Karen Carpenter really knew how to sing and perform. In this song, she holds everything in reserve until about the 3:19 mark, then she "lets loose" there for one note. Contextually, it's brilliant, yet so understated.
One of the most amazing, naturally talented voices i have ever heard, and ever will, always remembered Karen x
It's just utterly beautiful
Every note of her hauntingly beautiful voice is absolute perfection, Without question the greatest female vocalist in history!
Great singer!!!
My favorite of all times!
k.c had
the most beautiful voice i ever herd!!!!
Outstanding voice. She's legendary. Such a sad soul. RIP Karen.
Their greatest triumph and a signal turning point in their music, the first of many turning points in their music. Oh to still have her with us.
Miss you, Karen Carpenter!! --------------------------Wolfsky9
AND TO THINK SHE RECORDED THIS SONG IN 1 TAKE! THE LYRICS WROTE ON A NAPKIN! AND 21 YEARS OLD! MINDBLOWING AMAZING ISN'T IT!...
EXACTLY!!! Karen was such a beautiful human being, she had such a magic about her that is so rare.
I love so many of their songs, hard to say which I like best! This one is in my top five!
Still can't believe she's gone!
Priceless!
BEST FEMALE VOCALIST. GOD GIVEN TALENT RIP. ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
11 people gave it thumbs down? They have issues.
Joel Cocke they are probably deaf.
Karen was 20 yrs old when she recorded this. This is a clip from a summer replacement music/variety series called "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" which ran from July 6th to Sept 7th 1971. You are right, I think her had the best voice I have ever heard
a heavenly voice she had
Angel's voice
CARPENTERS: Forever in my life, forever in my heart...
My favorite all time song by The Carpenters. Karen you left us way too soon.😢
What a voice. Never replicated and smooth as silk❤
eight people were born AFTER the 70's. good luck in your search for the genesis of music. (if you have been to a wedding in the last 40 years you would most certainly know who the carpenters are)
Really, there was a time when you had to have talent to be considered entertainment. I miss those days.
I love this song
Sensational voice
here we are, 2022 & still on my list,,,,,, RIP Karen
I remember not going to school one day and saw this performance on the Michael Douglas show in 1971 I was 11
This song just gets to me and i have no idea why? ❤️
BRILLIANT
Probably. He did the majority of the arrangements. He is definitely the underrated part of her success since he really understood how to get the most out of her voice.
I agree "Why did she die?"...but I can't (won't) name someone else instead
She is sadly missed by many of us.
Believe me if either Paris on Kim died there would be many of their fans very sad........just like us missing Karen Carpenter. Have a nice day Roberto
With the times or against the times. You figure it. But it lasted. A female singer with no equal, that is what we have!
It's true. And not uncommon in most Carpenters songs to sense that Karen was somehow still holding back, that her voice was so powerful and rich, there was more there if she needed it.
very great song
At least you got to see them live, that will be a good memory.
Greatest female vocalist, bar none.
Un super Hit the Carpenters en la Exquisita Voz de Karen Carpenter una de Las mejores voces femeninas del Mundo año 1971
Such finesse
I wish i live in this period..
Thanks so very much!
It will always be Yesterday once more or may be Only yesterday.
Teardrops are falling..
Haunting
Someone please tell me why the carpenters have NOT been inducted into the R&RHOF? I just cant comprehend it!
There are no singers with the range of Karen Carpenter in this world today, she was the Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady of her profession, once in a lifetime!
Las emociones más sutiles y auténticas sólo ella puede transmitirlas
This song is not known, comparing with their other songs. But it gives me such a positive-melancholic and nostalgic feeling. This song was original written by Leon Russell. But Richard rewrote its lyrics for Karen before they released their cover version. "I love you" by Leon means "love" after physical relationship. But "love" by Richard means "being a big fan" of the superstar. I like the lyric version by Carpenters because I can imagine that a girl admires him as a plastic love.
My grandma loved listening to this spng when she deep-fried puppets. She was Presbyterian.
