Set in Montana in the 1920s, Jane Campion’s hotly anticipated new film is an enthralling revisionist western awash in sublime expanses and nuance, capturing a landscape and a people driven by the fantasy and folly of western expansion. Adapted from Thomas Savage’s cult novel of the same name, THE POWER OF THE DOG tells the story of successful rancher brothers George (Jesse Plemons) and Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch, also appearing at the Festival in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain) Burbank, whose relationship sours when the more mild-mannered George marries local widow Rose (Kirsten Dunst).
Rose and her son Peter (Kodi Smit- McPhee) arrive at the Burbank ranch - seemingly wholesome and naïve - attempt to fit into the family’s complex dynamic of new money, but are continually stymied by an unspoken brotherly bond. Phil’s past as a classics scholar at Yale is barely discernible as he sports a tough and dirty exterior, while frequently referring to the antics of his mentor Bronco Bill. Cumberbatch shines in this ferocious performance as a cowboy to the core, whose hurtful, macho quips toward Peter and his mother hint at a simmering menace and a capacity for erratic cruelty and violence; a kind of camouflage that only serves to repress deep-seated trauma and latent desire.
Proving once again that she is one of today’s greatest filmmakers, Campion delivers a fascinating study of masculinity and internal torment, subverting the codes of the western - and of the male gaze - in a universe that is always shifting in tone, rendered with stunning cinematography by Ari Wegner, a disorienting score by Jonny Greenwood, and a terrific ensemble cast.
Jane Campion is a New Zealand-born director, screenwriter, and producer. She is the second of seven women to be nominated for a Best Director Academy Award, and the first woman filmmaker to receive the Palme d’Or, for The Piano (93). It would be my favorite movie we're it not for another Jesse Plemons movie, I'm Thinking Of Ending Things. That was my favorite this year but this was a strong runner up.

I do not get this movie. Nothing happens.
Darling, a sexually abused gay cowboy with ptsd, who abused everyone around him sees his only friend and brother get married. The brother is equally nasty. He brings home this woman she says I can't play the piano, he buys a piano and insists that she play in front of the Govenor no less, she says no alcohol, he fills the place with booze, then tells brother she said he must bathe infuriating him. Then George leaves house full of alcohol and her gay son and leaves her with abusive brother. Brother goes nuts, son kills him.
You obviously did not get it. So much happened in the movie. It was incredible. It just wasn’t spoken. I suppose you thought Mad Max Fury Road was just a senseless car race in the desert and then they all raced back to where they came from.
You can always watch it again, this time paying more attention. I think good films really warrant multiple viewings, there are many films where my initial viewing yielded pretty mediocre to lukewarm response, but subsequent viewings completely changed my mind. Also, try watching the film without distractions - don't watch it on a phone or computer, instead try to catch it in cinema or on a big screen with curtains down and sound cranked way up. Viewing a film should be a devoted experience, you will be cheated out of your own enjoyment if you don't commit yourself fully.
If you think nothing happened then I’m sure you didn’t pay attention to the movie at all.
I didn't like it either but it's a really good film, the atmosphere, acting and themes are on point. Got bored while watching it but honestly can't get it out of my mind. I mostly don't like period pieces (bar Robert Eggers' masterpieces) or straight up dramas so I accepted it was a me problem.
Just me that thought this movie was very overrated? Beautiful, great performances, well written. Just disconnected and an abrupt ending serving little pay off.
Great cinematography but the film was a snorefest
It is a disgusting film hurting innocent animals. Benedict should be ashamed of himself. I don't think he can call himself a vegan anymore after what he has done for the movie. He should learn to have some principles.

You are dumb when you think that they hurt real animals ..on film there are always fake animals so greenpeace or other animal safety projects just wouldnt allowed these movies...beside it must look realistic..im a vegetarian too but i dont think i would life in 1925 long...
