Always have your personal belongings go along with you at the same time. Often, moving companies are part of crime rings and hijack for ransom. Sue both companies for lost and punitive damages for emotional distress.

Only choice is to move together with your furniture or buy new furniture. If you compare prices with renting a U-Haul to buying new furniture then prices could be cheaper, the same, or more expensive.

The comments "attorney! Sue them! Go to court", brilliant idea. Do you really think that if this family saw this that they would think "oh, okay, no one ever told us to do that, we never thought about it, thanks for the help!"
