This is five days after the release of BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME, which may explain some of the audience spontaneous reactions to lyrics from that record.

Yeah. It's insightful. "Love Minus Zero" is so new, most of them didn't know it yet. You can hear a couple people laugh after a couple lines (meant well). And though some lines of his poetry can evoke true laughter, "Love Minus Zero" is a love song (possibly the most beautiful love song ever written). But it isn't funny. I think Bob really wants the audience to pick up on that, the essence of the song, and make a connection/get some feedback, you know? Especially with how personal his songs are. It'd be so hard to do that kind of job. Anyway, what a great show!

Thank you. What a treasure! Great distraction from the political nonsense happening in the US. Absolutely no one like Dylan. Great sound quality for that time and loved the audience reaction.

I know exactly what you mean about the 'sound' of this recording - it might be a little vintage, even 'tinny', but it really captures the sound of the room, almost the air in the room. Listening to it is like pulling a genie out of a time-capsule.
The girl, next to the taper, who chuckles when she hears the line: "That someone thinks they really found you", if she was - say - 20 years old that night, is now 71. Hopefully.

I took a highschool classmate of mine to see the evening show. I had seen him before in 1964 at Wilson high school gym in Long Beach and would see him again in Long Beach in December but it was my friend's first experience. It's safe to say her life changed that night. Of all our other classmates she and I are the only ones we still care to keep in touch with. I owe him my awakening.

I decided to become an English teacher when I heard him sing "Blowin' in the Wind" at the Newport Folk Festival in the summer of 1963. I had been studying math and physics at Boston College until then.

I still crack up every time I hear him do "If You Gotta Go." Love that silly subterfuge, "It ain't that I'm wanting anything you never gave before, It's just that I'll be sleeping soon & it'll be too dark for you to find the door, So, if you gotta go...", & that amazing B side of Bringing It All Back Home. Sure it's been said a trillion times, but add one more here now: at almost 71, I am more amazed than ever at the enormity of Zim's output, with him then not yet even 24 yrs...so fkg extraordinary... & he was so much more self-assured, deliberate & unrushed at the Civic than up the road a year+ earlier at Royce Hall. Too bad he & his buds had to put up with so much crap at the Bowl later in the year, when they tore through with that big electric brain-mind-spinal adjustment... Ahh, the magic of the time. Thanks for the jig, Mr Pig!

At this point Dylan was blossoming as a songwriter. Still considered a folk singer. He was also still not the huge star he became after releasing "Like A Rolling Stone". Fantastic tape recording and a superb historical document.

Such a Treasure, golden years ago and a really excellent recording. The Taper's chit chat during Baby Blue adds to the authenticity of the moment. Bob is my main music source, still bringing the best on home to all. Thank you for this presentation, Swinging Pig. Much 💛🕊️🌞!

Can’t believe I only recently found this channel! Subscribed. I’ve been a big Dylan fan my whole life. Recordings like this really appreciate how Dylan uses the harmonica in his songs... he introduces a new scene, a passage of time, or something completely different like raw emotion with each harmonica fill. He’s preferred himself to be described as a poet in the past but as great as his words are, it’s hard for me to read them without the music. They just need a voice and a harmonica and It seems to me like he writes with the two in mind. Like he is thinking: “is this something Bob Dylan would say?” I always wondered if he thought he had cornered himself with the image he created of himself and that’s why he was always trying to change. Reminds me of his “Life is about creating yourself” quote in the documentary. Cheers!

Brings it all back, I live about 10 minutes from it. Santa Monica is very expensive to live in now. Too hip for me. Started my first rock band in 65. Remember listening to Bob on my AM car radio. This is a fantastic tape. Thanks for sharing it. It's part of the holes in my past I get to fill in, little by little. I lived 40 min away then, didn't have money to go to these concerts until 68-70.

Intelligent audiences...I love listening to that era. Even by 69, the beatnicks were over taken by crowdies, power chord heads who couldn't be bothered to shut their mouths during a song. I was just listening to Joni Mitchell isle of Wight festival 1970. People were frightening her.

  • @edited7382

It's so nice to hear a great live version of this that isn't interrupted after every line/verse with people yelling "Woo", in order to bring attention to themselves and let Bob know that they appreciate a particular line, or harmonica break. Audiences were quiet and respectful back then. Unfortunately, people are DEvolving.

Amazing the ambience from the SM Civic Auditorium is definitely on this vintage1965 tape. It’s a real good audience tape- Love Minus Zero/ Mr.Tambourine Man/ She Belongs to me/All I really want to do - performances all sounds great from Dylan’s vocals. “It’s all over now baby blue” I enjoyed & you can hear the tapers mentioning going back stage and also say something about the record(maybe comparing the song to the album? I forgot
Which song they were referring to). Thank you SP!

Sure the audience reacts to the new songs that they don't know yet, but I think it's also because these lyrics present such undisguised truths that nobody else says...this man breaks new ground in poetry. He does this as a matter of course and shouts this in the audience's ears if need be..In love this courage

Yeah, but he hurt himself physically anf during his healing he probably had some insight as to he had really become. Dont you think his genius was too much even for him at times?
Plus he got married! And was having kids.
Noone really knows how badly he was injured.
Dont you think he had some kind of religious, mystical experience?
How many great ones have said:"The muse (voice in our heads) comes from another world. Dylan learned early, probably through his discussions with Woody and his early ramblings in the South, that people are in it for themselves and family first! Genius is never understood.
In his later interviews he challenged the interviewer to try and write some of the stuff he was writing. And then asked why he doesn't do it the same way he said I did it once I can do something else now. Dylan tolerated little or no hypocrisy.

@@johnholland723 he was burnt out and hated the booing. Look at the videos of him saying that. He was getting death threats. I also believe he was on heroin as most of the rock stars around that time were. He left the scene for lots of reasons and cleaned himself up. Did he really have a severe accident? Some say no others say yeah? I think he hated the booing more than anything and put out like 5 albums in 3 years? Who does that anymore?
