Neat! In order to conceal the “gap” in the center of the pillar that can ruin the illusion, try using a FIRST SURFACE mirror. So named because the reflective layer is on the FRONT surface rather than on the back. The “gap” appears as 2x the thickness of the mirror due to the silvering being on the back. When the silvering is on the front, there is no thickness to reflect through so there’s no visual gap. Nice work!
@@GoofBall-bu1hv When you position two mirrors face-to-face, you get a repeating reflection of a reflection called an “infinity mirror” effect. Unless your viewpoint is actually in between the mirrors, you won’t see too much of the “infinity.” However, if one mirror is a half-silvered (aka a one-way mirror which is reflective on one side but non-reflective on the other) you can position the mirrors face-to-face, look through the BACK of the half-silvered mirror and see the “infinity tunnel.” Since most mirrors are silvered on the BACK, any item touching the front surface will be reflected but you will also see a gap between the object and its reflection which is twice the thickness of the glass. If the mirror is silvered on the FRONT (aka first surface) any object touching the front will show NO GAP between the object and its reflection. Look up “infinity mirror how to” if you want to find out more.
I've had this cute dwarf mini for months and wanted to do something Moria-ish for him. I had a vague idea to do something with mirrors and pillars but everything I came up with seemed meh. And then this video pops up! Clear, inspirational and funny, I immediately subscribed. Thank you for the awesome build!
It's about as functional as I could hope to make it (it's like a frankenstein's monster of bits and pieces of furniture, shelves, tools, etc). Maybe for my 10,000 subscriber celebration ;)
Ive become fascinated with book nooks and exactly what you've done here with mirrors and glass, to give it the illusion of a much bigger space. Magical.
I watched this with my 7 year old nephew, when you’d finished he commented ‘this is the bestest thing I’ve seen ALL DAY!’ We also both agree that this is an awesome build!

Such a wonderful build! The mirror effect is amazing. You inspired me with your Skyrim booknook to start building miniature stuff as well (stirsticks galore), since you made it seem so simple (as in, you can just start with a few basic tools), so I've been building tiny furniture for the past week and absolutely loving it. Can't wait to slowly build up my arsenal of tools and materials and start taking on bigger projects. I finally have a hobby. That's new. Thank you for showing your process so well, and always providing a materials list. I really wouldn't have known where to start without your videos.
That's awesome! I'm so happy to hear you've found yourself a new hobby (albeit, a time consuming, at times incredibly frustrating hobby)! Collecting tools and materials is the best part.
I have never been able to get over the sheer monumentality of the architecture in the LotR universe. It has always fascinated and horrified me just how unbelievably grand and fucking massive it is. I think you doing the stairs at the front REALLY helped portray that.
Wow looks great! I've got an idea when I saw it with a light on: two warm yellow leds in the torchlights on the columns instead of one light in the celling. They could make it looks even better.
This is amazing!! Also a tip...if you ever have shiny surfaces, rough them up with sand paper or cross-hatch with the blade(just obviously be careful w/the latter), and glue should stick fine! Thanks for the awesome make!
That strange moment, then you remembered those runes from the extended edition of LOTR books and translated then as "KazadDum". Fill myself 15 yo again. Nice!
The inscription on the big doors (west gate) was actually "The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs." :-)
Yes, that would have made it even more awesome. NerdForge used a fire effect with a diagonal one-faced mirror for her "Infinite Library" Book Nook, he could do something similar here. Or maybe for the next project.
Looks fantastic! should try an anti-reflective coating on the outside of the front mirror. Might help with the glare/reflections of the room to make it more transparent towards the inside.
Good idea. I think it might have been the quality of the two way I used as well--I didn't want to spend too much on something if I wasn't sure how it would turn out. For the next infinity box project I'll be a bit more comfortable getting something a tad better.
I've seen computer cases that use this kind of mirroring too for the front face, looks really nice. GameMax Abyss probably the best example of it I've seen.
Oh wow, this is fantastic! Was thinking up ideas for a LOTR themed book nook and this is real close to (but way better than) what I was thinking! Also awesome to see another Canadian Hobby Channel out there!
looks great ! while watching this vid, there comes the idea to make a different box with an infinity gauntlet and use it as a blueray box. thanks for this
I'm starting my own project. Go wish I could show it here but., This video was extremely helpful.. I love the detail and your base knowledge of The Lord of the Rings such as the 90° angles versus the rounded look for the dwarfs.. I wouldn't have thought of that. Anyways, you do a d*** good job. Thanks for the info, keep making them ill, keep checking them out.
I love that you said "I dunno... je ne sais quoi?" which literally translates to "I dunno, I don't know what" which never really answered your initial I dunno, even though it sounds like an answer. I love learning bits of French you notice funny things.
I enjoy your projects - creativity, attention to detail and craftsmanship is outstanding. On this project I understand the huge scale of it, just would have maybe used nano leds and made torches on the columns with a flicker circuit(?) and a little plant growth / fauna at the entrance, and wear to the rune text. My thoughts anyway... Great job!
you could use those mirrors to make the occult object known as "The Devil's Toybox" essentially a box with mirrors on all sides that when closed demons supposedly makes noises inside the box
