      Hi, Thanks for the video. Question can you please list every fish you have in your aquarium setup & the type of turtle you have, please? I want your same collection of fish & same type of turtle in my new 400 gallon fresh water tank. I really like the way the fish & turtle interact but i need the full list of every single fish you have & turtle type. Just so that i can easily order my new school of fish & turtles for my tank. I promise to post a video for you of my setup. But i need help with choosing cool fish & turtles.

      Hey have a question would really like a response when possible can you put a turtle with a giant gourami I wonder because it has a long dangly feelers on the bottom of the fish which fish use to navigate the bottom of the ground and those feelers are really long however it is a large and aggressive fish so wondering if I can mix it to extremely aggressive even could take on my Oscars and kill them if I let it but I took the Oscar out obviously I took the Oscar out and he is with a bunch of other cichlids and he is fine and also the Oscar is almost nearly full-grown and no match for the guarana my Grammy's about 14 in big and growing possible 15 in at current size despite the size I feel that the turtle would probably have a worst bite than the gourami considering it snaps

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  4 роки тому +3

      @@nicolemorin6795 there's a big risk on both sides but more so for the gourami feelers. There are two ways this can work out. Either yhey are introduced when the gourami is young and small and more agile and active to avoid being bitten. By the time it gets bigger and slower, the turtle wouldve lesrnt it is not food. Or introduced when it is big which means it should be in a tank or pond of substantial size making it very possible just base off the size of the habitat. But if the giant gourami is grown out and kept in a tank that is only just fitting, that will be tok dangerous. Remember that no matter, a level of risk remains.

    A lot of it depends on the species of turtle. Northern Map Turtles are one of the best choices when it comes to keeping turtles and fish together. In the wild, their diet is mostly insects and crustaceans. RES are very aggressive, and fish are their primary food source.

    I started with a 20 gal. about 2 months or so ago and had 1 slider, 1 goldfish, a koi and a pleco. All was well and koi outgrew the turtle and is now twice his size. Added another slider about a month ago, upgraded to a 75 gallon tank and added 2 smaller koi. Big mistake because I noticed when feeding this morning that one of the new kois is no longer in tank. I searched high/low and all I can come up with is that they ate it...Sucks!

    I keep my Brown Roofed Turtle with 10 fish. They've been with the turtle for four months and no losses have occured due to predation since introduction.
    There were initially 18 fish; 2 died due to suffocation as they got stuck on an ornament, one got killed by her own mate after breeding, I sold five and one is in my shrimp tank now. That leaves us 9 fish but I recently got another fish so that makes 10 again.

    I have a male river cooter loving turtle. He is sweet to me and to my goldfishes. Never hurt them and they had baby fishes recently. I have a 4000 gallon pond so I decided to buy a female for him. I got a female yellow belly slider a third of his size and much younger. Probably 4 months old and Joy my male is almost two yo.
    She chase the fishes and bite the tails. I noticed 2 with injuries in their tails.
    So I had to bring her to a 50 gallon tank until I decide what to do. I can give back to the store but I don't want because she is too cute and I love her already. Do you think by growing older she may calm down and stop chasing the fishes? I made the pond when Joy was one year old. Please help and thank you in advance.

      I'm actually in the early works of creating a vid on my top fishes to keep w them. Had to do a lot of experimentation and observation before i could share a list. • @chukwuemekaonyema2716
      @chukwuemekaonyema2716 5 років тому

      @@SGBeardedAquarist Yes the Convict was doing amazing and got bigger than my juvi jack dempsey. I also have a surviving gold fish in there that is huge. I always put fish in through the acclimation process with bag of fish in tank and keep turtle out for a long time (30-90 min) so the fish get familiar with the hiding spots and such. My canister filter tap had broke (eheim pro 2) and I reorganized how water flowed. I seen the convict get caught. Not sure if the new flow of water made it underestimate its options of how to get away or what but I had high hopes. I have Canister and 2 power heads so there is a lot of current. My turtle is big though (8 inch shell from bottom measurement). I have seen exactly what you say where if the fish is very ACTIVE, it loses interest. At first I thought turtle only liked bright fish but that was not the case. I have some good hiding spots and bridges which i see the dempsey take advantage of. Here are my list of fish below. My turtle was always significantly bigger than all of them.
      Great Danillo's - bought a school of like 5 and down to my last 1. They lasted over 6 months, still not sure how they get caught but they did the best. Fast, short fins, active, seem intelligent
      Barbs - fast but not that active. They did ok but possibly water parameters caused them to give up. I just started seeing them dissappear. Last 3 went missing all in the same night.
      Goldfish - only 1 survived and still alive till this day. Turtle still tries to get it from time to time but too fast
      Big Snail - no chance. Sooner or later turtle gets too bored and goes after it
      Convict - Did well but...(story above)
      Jack Dempsey (Juvy) - doing great and still growing (2 inches tops)
      BTW, this is in a 75 gal now. I want to try Haps but hear they grow fast and eat other fish so want jack dempsey to get descently bigger before I try to introduce one. Was thinking of putting a bala shark but was told they get aggressive and big. Dont want the turtle to have issues since the turtle is the primary focus of tank.

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  5 років тому

      Wow thank you for sharing! I would have thought that by the time a turtle is 8 inches itll be too big, slow and more herbivorous to be that interested in fishes. You mentioned barbs, what kinda barbs were they?
      And yes, bala sharks get huuuuuge. Not sure about aggressiveness but just housing them itself would be an issue.

    • @chukwuemekaonyema2716
      @chukwuemekaonyema2716 5 років тому

      @@SGBeardedAquarist Thanks for responding! I have had the turtle for 8 months now roughly and it was probably 5-6 inches when we first got it, standard legal size I guess since you cant buy them too small. Mine has a diet of turtle sticks/pellots, shrimp pellots and assorted lettuce. It will literally eat anything in the tank, even the left over fish pellots and flakes. I am continuously making an effort to feed it a balanced diet and not over feed.
      I had tiger barbs. I had about 4 or 5 initially. They are fast, small fins, they did amazing! When I first introduced, I remember waking up to 1 on the floor, must have tried to get away from the turtle? But the others did well. They werent that active like the Giant Danillo's but they were fast and the turtle never got close to them. One day they were all gone and I think it may be related to water parameters. My son threw something in the water which may have impacted them, so I consider tiger barbs good options.
      I have a 75 gallon tank and dont plan to go any bigger so the shark (if it even survived) may not have been my best long term fit. I'm curious how an eel or other style of fish would work with the turtle.

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  5 років тому

      I feel you about turtles eating anything; mine eats all the fish poop too. And yes its always a balance between their hunger and over feeding. Too little food and fish become the food. Too much and its bad for them. Keep me posted if you ever give other fishes a go! :)

    My turtle has like 5 minnos and 1 goldfish as tank mates she once in awhile chases them but can't catch or likes the company of. As long as I feed her she seems to ignore the fish and they get along just fine. All were initially feeder fish to begin with but she ate the ones she either didn't like or caught off gaurd and ate what she could and lost interest in chasing the rest. Feeder goldfish is to big now for her to try going after and the minnos have hiding places and mostly stay in a group so she no longer messes with them either. I feed my turtle on one side of the tank and the fish on the other so they don't compete for food and it keeps them seperated and focused so they don't have any issues. I would like to add a few other fish but don't know what kind to add just yet as my turtle did eat a plecostomas I added awhile back rip sqweegy but have yet to replace him as a plecostomas is a pricey fish to replace over and over.
    Love your videos and experience. Would like to see your turtle ramp and bask spot if you have one and how you set it up looks homemade and looks great.

      If you get the turtle as a small baby probably. Some fish will pick on s real small turtle tho so watch out for that. If the turtle has never ate anything but turtle food and not fish once he grows big enough to hunt the fish he probably won’t bother. That’s been my experience for years. Bigger the tank better they chances they coexist as well. I have a 125 gallon and have never had a single issue between two painted turtles and various fish for years.

    My turtles are super aggressive...the two of them no longer can be kept together and I have to use a separator to avoid them biting each other, they are 2 years old. And keeping fish with them is giving them live food - I tried guppies, shark fish, tiny prawns, orange fish, plants....none survived over a day 🤦

    Could an American bullfrog cohabit with a red-eared slider under any circumstances? Our local Petco sometimes accidentally imports tadpoles in with their feeders.
    I would love to "save" one, but if it turns out to be a bullfrog, then we would not have enough space to accommodate it.
    We also have a red-eared slider whom I was hoping we could house in a large outdoor enclosure.
    I know putting it with a turtle doesn't seem like "saving" it, but at least in a pond it would have a chance to escape, unlike in an aquarium that uses them as feeders.
    Adult bullfrogs are also somewhat less defenseless than tadpoles.

    How about feeding? Can fishes and turtle share food? From what I see from my Google search, their dietary is difference, but i guess both of the fishes and turtle would snatch the food irregardless of whose food we are pouring in

    • @SGBeardedAquarist
      @SGBeardedAquarist  2 роки тому

      While there are slight differences in their diets, both generally do fine with each others diet (note that fine does not mean optimal). Turtles may require more calcium content and older turtles may do better with lower protein amounts, but you can easily find a fish food that is a good in between or fix a mix of turtle and fish food and even if they each get a mix of both, theyll be fine.
      This is especially true if you're keeping red eared sliders/hardy species of turtles and most species of fish. If you're keeping delicate species or turtles or fish with very specific requirements, you may need to take more precaution.

    Would a suckermouth catfish be ok to house with my yellow bellied slider and painted turtle? I read somewhere that you don’t wanna keep them with pig-nosed and soft shells, because they’ll suck on their shells and it’ll cause inflammation or death. Is that the same problem with other turtle species too?
