If you look closely, they avoid displaying the character *during* the warp. That's simply to avoid having too much of an hassle in managing the transition in the lighting. (It shows the character in the tunnel, camera change view and the character is not seen anymore but he's already set to be in the other world's lighting. Wrap is done and, after the camera move back and you can see the character lighted properly.) The wrap itself is done with a simple after-effect on each of the 2 camera. The 2nd camera (displaying the cave background) has a transparency mask technique applied to it which has its mask update with a kind of transitional clouds texture to its mask channel. While they could have used VE-Graph, there's absolutely no need for it.

Honestly, more than even the graphics being impressive, whoever is doing the art/story direction on these Unity shorts needs to be put in charge of something bigger. They're all incredible. This one especially. But all of them, honestly. Got a somewhat spren+radiant vibe (Stormlight Archive) from the guy and his techno-owl's relationship. Great presentation of that kind of concept. Definitely would love to see more of this, in any form. Great performances, great visuals (esp. in real-time), great audio, astounding visual direction and concept.

Nice work guys! Really loved it. The direction is awesome and camera angles used. Really loved that switch of hand holding a bag/case, from starting it switches from right to left hand of character and sudden changed at 3.01 frame to right hand and again changes to left hand at 3.13frame in video. I hope this was intentional and added the value to it. Suggestion: But the little sound of changing hand was needed I guess. I might be wrong. Hats off for team. All the best!!!
Wow....am working on a project regarding this world underneath Earth, but this took it to another level. i never regretted choosing Unity as my game engine of choice. This enigine and its asset store have things wide beyond ones imagination
The new tech makes rendering easier, but the majority of cost of these productions comes from creation of assets and animation, which is as expensive and time consuming as ever. There were some big improvements, like digital sculpting and photogrammetry - they improved quality/realism, but I think they didn't really reduce time and cost. Also: realtime engines require more effort in baking and optimisations than offline renderers, so there are some disadvantages too.
@@m778nz8 I think he's just referencing the way Oats picked up and continued the Adam demo. Though to be honest, I prefer the work that the Unity demo team has done on this and previous projects more.

If they did have to hack it, but it still runs great, looks great, etc, they then give that feedback to Unity and hopefully that thing they had to "hack" gets taken into consideration to be reevaluated and done better/differently, or something new gets added to handle whatever had to be "hacked".

That looks pretty damn impressive for a real time render. Unfortunately, demoing videos like this on UA-cam isn't ideal because of the compression UA-cam inherently adds to videos. Makes it hard to see the true quality/resolution of the original render. The latest Unreal engine 5 demo still looks more impressive but this is very good. 3D engines and rendering techniques have come a long way since the early 2000s.
@@reaperrg93 There is no connection here. "Real-time" can use any amount of baking, from zero to a ton. Real-time in the computer graphics world just means you're rendering at least 30 frames per second and even that's debatable. A tech demo could claim "real-time" and run at the 24 fps movie standard or even lower. A framerate as low as 16 fps could be perceived as motion, perhaps even lower with motion blur.
Either that, or it wont have any real content.. either way it's not cost efficient. Games are not a charity after all, it's a business^^ Another point would be that this runs at 30 FPS on a pretty high end system. Which is still impressive, but for a game to actually sell copies it should at LEAST run 60-120 FPS on high settings with such a rig. So that.. i dunno.. the average user / 5+ years old computers can run it at all.
Like others have said budget is a huge reason. Creating a small confined tech demo with this level of detail is one thing, creating a full game that has this level of attention to detail in every part of it would require a TON of money, time, asset creation etc etc. Plus you'd be targeting only high end gaming PC's (VERY few PC gamers buy GPU's over ~$250-$350) and maybe the next gen consoles coming out holiday 2020. That's a pretty small market for something that will require a HUGE budget. Very little chance of making a profit on that.
Brilliant work. There were many moments where the story and the fidelity together made me forget I was watching something rendered in a game engine. I would love to see a feature-length version of this.

It most likely means something with a Titan-V or GTX1080ti/RTX2080ti ... they're hyper-cards but still consumer class, not Tesla/Quadro workstation monsters.
This is highlighting the work done against the nVidia RTX cards, that have a focus on realtime raytracing, which this scene doesn't really use but the fast buffer flushing done with the RTX stuff also makes a lot of the other neat shaders used in this scene playable at a reasonable FPS. The entry level RTX card is about $350 iirc but still pretty powerful. This is what they mean by consumer class PC, something with 16gb+ of DDR4, RTX card and a quality CPU (i7 or equivalent).

Anyone who's worked a graphic related job would tell you this. Which isn't to say Rebirth isn't good though, it's still very impressive.
Technically, people could make one right now. If it was a PC only game made exclusively for the highest end hardware. Which, is obviously not really a good business model.....so they won't.
I like the direction you guys are going with this. This could be a new medium. Real-time Cinematic movies running on consumer-class desktop PC. The only thing missing is "interaction" with the movie. Imagine telling a story in this high detailed visual presentation that can present choices to the viewer, enabling story branch with multiple outcomes. Otherwise, this is nothing different than a pre-rendered short film we get in abundance already. Can't wait until VR is also capable of handling this visual fidelity. We're maybe 2 decades away?

Why there aren't games with this kind of quality? We always see beautiful render demos but not 1 single game that looks like this.

Technically, people could make one right now. If it was a PC only game made exclusively for the highest end hardware. Which, is obviously not really a good business model.....so they won't.

I like the direction you guys are going with this. This could be a new medium. Real-time Cinematic movies running on consumer-class desktop PC. The only thing missing is "interaction" with the movie. Imagine telling a story in this high detailed visual presentation that can present choices to the viewer, enabling story branch with multiple outcomes. Otherwise, this is nothing different than a pre-rendered short film we get in abundance already. Can't wait until VR is also capable of handling this visual fidelity. We're maybe 2 decades away?
if only cyberpunk 2077 could look like this, this demo certainly has that cyberpunk vibe
