  • "The Grenoside Sword Dance is a unique sword dance. Although many of the moves it contains can be found in other sword dances, the dancers wear clogs and perform a breakstep between figures. The dance also features the ritual 'beheading' of the captain near the beginning of the dance." (from the website)
"The six dancers are numbered anti-clockwise in the dance. Dave Brookes, the captain in the fox hat, sings the calling on song as the team are lined up in two rows of three. So, starting from the right of the picture and going anti-clockwise, we have 1 John Newman, 2 Malcolm Harper, 3 Derek West, 4 Steve Mettam, 5 Mike Steel, 6 Gerry Bates. The musician is Ray Ellison. This appeared to be Steve Mettam's very first dance out with the Grenoside team!" (noted down by Ashley Powell of the Grenoside Sword Dancers, 1 August 2024).
