One of the greatest first symphonies of all time !!!!!
Except Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart (!), Haydn, Mendelssohn, Sibelius.
@@Piflaser And Mahler!!!!!
@@scottmiller6495 And Mahler, yes, of course!
Indeed it is, as Tom Service pointed out in his Series "50 Greatest Symphonies." Not only is Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony included among those 50, but also his First, saying Tchaikovsky's "First Symphony is one of the most important markers in the symphonic story in the 19th century, the piece in which a new type of symphony - absolutely Tchaikovsky's own, and Russia's too - is not just glimpsed, but claimed, staking out the territory his next five symphonies continued to explore. And as well as all that historical significance, it's also one of the most irresistibly attractive first symphonies ever written."
And Shostakovich
And Glazunov (which set up the stage for the establishment of a major publishing firm and ushered in a new(er) era in Russian music during the remaining decades of the Russian Silver Age)
And Nielsen (the daring, coming of age Nordic modernism of a work that challenged the German School of composition that dominated Scandinavian musical establishment at the time)
Gergiev has a genius ability to bring the full emotional resonance of Tchaikovsky and the Mariinsky Orchestra is superb. These performances so far exceed the usual interpretations that it's like listening to Tchaikovsky for the first time.
I agree with you completely. Great comment.
Listening to Tchaikovsky for the first time is the worst. But every time you listen to him, it gets better and better. His music is the best the last time you ever listen to it
@@michaelpaulsmith4619 Not very known in the West, Yevgeny Svetlanov has the same genius ability.
The interpretations of western conductors often go in the direction of circus music, they exaggerate as they think, that the russian soul is the soul of foolish people. Karajan is the worst, he may have a lot of benefits, his Tchaikovsky is not a part of.
@@Piflaser well also Karajan was talking about himself and his interpretation of his story, ( why he always exagerates the fortes and pianos, thinking that it is what will make him interesting..instead of truly listening to his true Voice and the resonance of it ) , not about the human soul, which is about what we are choosing to create and how much we are owning the act of connection to our Source, what we came down onto this earth to see clearly and understand the importance of ; )
There is an almost manic feeling about this performance, with winter dreams taking on the dark shades of nightmare at times, and sudden bursts of energy pouring through a score usually taken more lyrically. Gergiev's interpretation is idiosyncratic, but, at the same time, both wholly Russian, and also in tune with the conflicted complexity of the composer. There is greatness and originality to be found here.
Great ! Valery Gergiev is truly a great conductor and the Mariinsky musicians are among the best in the world.
❤😂🎉😊
I love this music of Valery Gergiev 💕💜
So perfect 🥰
Grazie maestro, grazie tutti.
Pace.
Great Tchaikovskynian
sound.❤❤
Fantastic! Gergiev, Mariinsky and Tchaikowsky ❤❤❤
When the cellos begin playing the theme of Adagio cantabile, it feels like my heart would make a volt.
Wonderful ❤❤
Absolutely fabulous!
The greatness of
clarity and warmth. 😊❤
Marinski Teatre , is beautiful ❤
And Gergiev and Mariinsky make so much of it - especially the Adagio cantabile is heartbreakingly beautiful.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this is his best symphony.
❤❤❤❤
❤ This is from the Russian soul - it makes my heart beat faster. Thank you Valery Gergiev and Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra!!!! I cannot hold back tears when the heartbreaking theme in Adagio cantabile begins.
Extraordinary:, the conductor and players have their hearts and minds engaged here in an immensely under-rated work (in the West), their music, after all. The playing is passionate, accurate and Gergiev does a fantastic job- such as holding the pauses.
You're exactly right...
Grazie per averci regalato queste meraviglie. Gergiev, per il repertorio russo, è insuperabile.
This performance is so much better than the one given by the NY Philharmonic.
43:32 is an encore. The Polonaise from Eugene Onegin.
so you can read in the subtitle to the left
Thank you!
Korrigieren Sie bitte meine Fehler!
You're so right! Karajan's version is much below this wonderful music with Gergiev. He is one of my favourite conductors.
Excellent performance! Thank you!
The first time that I heard this Symphony was in 2013; it completely captured me with its overtly evocative imagery and emotional palette, how the master intertwined the two into a coherent and beautiful whole which uplifts the spirit and caresses the senses. Ever since, it has been one of my favorite Tchaikovsky symphonies, together with his 3rd and 6th.
That encore tho! 👏👏👏👏👏
Hermoso bravo
Orchestra bravissimi direttore Eccellente
Director y orquesta siempre espléndidos. Y la música: qué bello descubrimiento.
(ad interruption at start of 3rd movement)
1:18 begins | 14:35 gentle flute | 21:35 heroic trumpet | 24:30 3rd movement | 35:03 ending preview
Oh! What a fabulous concert. Although the tempo for the 2nd movement is too fast (I've yet to hear it played at Tchaikovsky's marked speed) I can forgive everything for the sheer Russianness of it all. This symphony caused the composer much heartache and, although it has its faults, as Tchaikovksy himself said, 'It is still better and more inventive than many of my later works.' The encore is a joy and there's not a soul on earth who'll be mistaking this for Brahms. What a magical performance. Thank you for sharing it here on UA-cam.
I agree with Tchaikovsky- give me this sparking work over the tedious dullness of the fifth symphony any day.
@@paulybarr Yup, # 5 puts me to sleep after 5 minutes!!

Pure perfection ❤
Bonjour quelles belles musiques ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
An exemplary performance of this symphony by Russians.
It is essential for a good performance of this symphony that the viola, cello, and double bass resonate well.
Music really shows the national character.
In Germany, France, and Italy, each orchestra has a strong national character.
When Russians play Russian music, the performance becomes rooted in their DNA.
Other countries cannot imitate it. That's what it means to be from the same country and language as the composer.
Kocham i pozdrawiam z Polski.♥️♥️♥️🌷🌷🌷
Entusiasmante, travolgente.
Not harsh and heavy but
with great warmth
and color ❤❤
His eccentric gestures are unique
Exceptional. Thank you all so much.
this is so good!!!!!!!!!!!
Grande. Es la mejor interpretación que he escuchado. Gracias
Highly recommend the documentary 'You cannot start without me'.
Gergiev=genius

And this was composed at the age of 26. What genius, what a marvellous composer. They are unrepeatable. Why is it that nothing like this is composed today?
Society today is too stupid and shallow to produce artists of this caliber again.
good job
Very interesting where the contrabasses are placed relative to the first violins. I think that's part of the reason for the perfectly tuned fifths.
What an interesting observation. I didn't even notice the positions.
Haven't heard PIT's First in decades. It's like discovering a lost masterpiece! The "Onegin" encore is superfluous. Unwelcome after this magnificent work.
Oneguin is never superfluous.
@@victoriaherrera7724 In this particular instance, it certainly is, detracting from the too seldom performed main work.
He found his baton! Yes!!
It was under his toothpick all the time!

21:15 horn solo is epic
Gergiev with baton, he often uses a toothpick or even his bare hands. He is often at the same time emotional and in cold blood.
I prefer bare hands. They are more expressive.
What is the piece played during the introduction? Seems familiar - something from Nutcracker?
I figured it out - Symphony No. 6 :)
Segundo movimiento de la 6 sinfonía!
Olen kuullut tämän livenä Pietarin Filharmoonikkojen soittamana kolmisen vuotta sitten. On uskomattoman hieno kipale. Varsinkin toinen osa on upea. Suosittelen käymistä Pietarissa konserteissa... sitten, kun tilanne taas sallii. Tsaikovskin haudalle vien aina kukkaset samalla.
Danke, sehr informativ, ganz neue Aspekte, hatte ich bislang übersehen!
Your time stamp for the last movement is incorrect. It starts at 31:35 and not 31:55.
Nice version, although I do find a bit on the harsh side !
that corn=ductor man he looken a lot like beethoven but taller and with haircut great work by all!
What music is the intro? Is that tune from Symphony 1?
The 1st symphony got nadezha von meck to pay money...legendary stuff.
Ah, yes. Haven't heard her name in quite a while. We all owe her a humungous debt of gratitude for her faith in PIT.
The second theme of the first movement reminds of the second theme of Russian National Anthem.
Next time show the man with the camera the viola section before the concert...
Ahhh, that's better! Listening first to a square northern Europe interpretation with a German orchestra and a conductor from northern lands above...the conductor just didn't get it, though also from a cold land...
It must be a hard symphony so that a toothpick is not enough for Gergiev to conduct, he needs a full baton
14:35

Magical! I have always loved Tchaikovsky's First Symphony much more than his Second and Third. The "Victor Book of the Symphony" said sometime around 1950 that this is the worst First Symphony ever written. This claim remained completely unsubstantiated, and for me, utterly incomprehensible!
Shame about the spoiler in opening credits ;-)
