Performance spotlight featuring Vic Firth Signature Artist Russ Miller! This video is excerpted from our new Factory Tour DVD! Take the tour yourself at: vicfirth.com/tour
how could anyone think this guy is anything but great, not to mention one of the best sounding kits ive ever heard. thanks COdrums ill have to google that Steve Gadd guy you mentioned, sounds like he might be a good one.
Parts in particular the swing section from about 3:40 reminds me of the late Martin Drew. The late-great Oscar Peterson's drummer. Very impressive, musical, and passionate playing by Russ Miller. Let's wish him a long career of great playing for us to enjoy.
Yeah I'm 14 years, i play drums since I was 7 and when I finish highschool I'll study music ! But indeed, when i was younger it was all about 'faster and harder'. But I think (however I reallyyyy don't think I know as much as I'll later) that I've learned that music indeed isn't about faster and harder and who has the better technique. Its about groove and feeling and emotion. Steve Jordan, Dave Weckl, Simon Phillips are one of my favourites. Sorry for bad english btw ! Long live music (:
"Just started? I've been studying drums professionally at the highest ranking institution in Australia for 4 Years now and trust me I understand." Good for you. I'm sure you'll go very far, but again, being 19 has a lot to do with it, mainly on the maturity front. Give it some time. "Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Vinnie Colauita are only a spec of what I've been studying all my life and aspire too." Again, good for you. Those are great influences. Keep it up.
incredible sounding kit. the wood hoops make such a difference as well. and i really like the added touch of putting wood hoops on the yamaha sub-kick (subwoofer mic) at the front of the bass drum as well :)
Everyone of the people who didn't like this can for certain not even come close to what this guy can do. Just shows that when somebody puts the time and effort in to perfect something there is always the jealous ones that use the thumbs down so that they feel better. Sad really..
RUSS MILLER HAS BEEN AN INFLUENCE IN EVERYTHING I DO, SINCE I WAS BABY, AND NOW THAT I'M 18, WITH 10 YEARS OF KNOWING THIS GUY, HE IS A LEGEND AND A HIGHLY DYNMAICAL FLAVOR MAN! AND HE'S GOTTEN A LIL CHUBBY! :D HAHA
There's a jazz instructor at my school named Russ Miller. He's a sax player though. This Russ Miller is great though too! Great control. And that kit looks awesome too.
"Music is not a popularity contest." Spoken like a true 19-year-old. You don't understand how the world, or for that matter music, really works. I'm glad you've got some excellent schooling and influences behind you (believe me, you have no idea how glad I am you don't cite Joey Jordison *at all*), but again, you've got a LOT to learn, and only a bunch of that learning can be achieved through time and experience.
He likes one for a harder attack and the the felt beater for feathering the bass drum for lighter styles of music. It makes his bass drum sound more versatile. You can look up Russ Miller actually talking about the Mapex Falcon pedals and how he sets em up.
Right and left feet will usually have slightly different levels of strength, which will result in slightly different tone. The right foot in right-handed players is generally a little stronger, and thus yields a slightly more solid attack (vice versa for left-handed players). This guy has a more solid beater for the left foot (based on what I can see), which may be intended to compensate for this.
My god--- If I were half good player he is... I wond't be writting this comment! II keep watching this video he is so great at drums! But most important... The sound of the kit and the sound of his playing!
@ninjamanfromgreece, I don't think he's using the Vic Firth HingeStix, he's using his signature "Hi-Def" vic firth stick which has a black logo right where the sweet spot is for cross-sticking.
K custom special dry ride my friend....I own one and they sound and play amazing... so much fun to play it, though I can't do it as much justice as this man obviously haahahaa
the ones on the snare drums are fibreskyns from remo,, i can't really tell what the rest are..But judging from experience and by the crown logo on his first tom, and having a very open vintage sound, i would guesstimate that it would remo Vintage Ambassador or Vintage emperor heads..This however is on speculation..I'm sure you could research it on Remo's website..
From Russ Miller's site about his gear. Heads: Remo - Coated Ambassadors on top of toms /Clear Ambassadors on the Bottom. /20” D.Weckl Remo Muffl for kick/ Fiberskyn 3 Diplomats on snares. / Powerstroke3 Renaissance on Kick / Custom PHX Signature he
Is there a way to know what head configuration is he using... I see those are Remo's... But what... Emperors, Ambassadors... The bass sounds amazing, buy the kit sounds like a whole drum family... Incredible!
photographerjonathan I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but several people in Africa, two in North Korea, and one in Mississippi were all just saved by Vic Firth drumsticks.
Curious that i had seen that rim type only in snares, and this time all drums have it except the snares. Does anyone know the effect this rim type has on the sound of drums?
show me a video response of your technically accurate chops. I'm not a full time music student but I listen to some drummers and surely russ miller is one of those who I'm listening to.
nice solo...just the right amount of creativity...dexterity... cluttery and 16 notes db at a nice tasty tempo never gets old on my ear.
This just gets better and better as it goes along.
Awesome solo! Great dynamics and control!
Amazingly tuned drumset! It rings so sweet!
how could anyone think this guy is anything but great, not to mention one of the best sounding kits ive ever heard. thanks COdrums ill have to google that Steve Gadd guy you mentioned, sounds like he might be a good one.

I can't think of another drummer that has as much dynamic control as Russ does. Awesome!!

Absolutely one of the best drummers i have ever heard!! Awesome finesse he has !!! Such fluid grace!
Just found out about Russ today via Vic Firth's Facebook page, wow is he such an awesome drummer!
This is unbelievable. Those dynamics, the expression, everything. Unreal.
Parts in particular the swing section from about 3:40 reminds me of the late Martin Drew. The late-great Oscar Peterson's drummer. Very impressive, musical, and passionate playing by Russ Miller. Let's wish him a long career of great playing for us to enjoy.
Those melodies are amazing. The brushwork in part is unbelievable also. This is one of the best drum solos very entertaining.

Simply Incredible. Very very versatile.
So so Tasty a work of art !!!!
Gotta love those remo snare heads! And the sound of those cymbals! Loved the bebop set as well!
this guy is one hell of a drummer, absolutely mind blowing, very Weckl inspired
That kit sounds awesome 😃
This Drum-Setup would work for every drummer ;) Also Tom wood rims...even warm couldn't describe the sound
Nice kit, awesome skillz. Love it.
seriously, this is one of the best sounding kits ever!
That kit looks amazing.
4:12 - 4:26 best part for me!
seven steps to heaven's groove!!
Great drumming, I like the way you make song with the drums. You have a mental picture of the music notes.
incredible sounding kit. the wood hoops make such a difference as well. and i really like the added touch of putting wood hoops on the yamaha sub-kick (subwoofer mic) at the front of the bass drum as well :)
Fantastic!!
Thats a good cymbal set!
i love that kit!!!!!!
i can see some Steve Smith influences over here ;)
great player!
Everyone of the people who didn't like this can for certain not even come close to what this guy can do. Just shows that when somebody puts the time and effort in to perfect something there is always the jealous ones that use the thumbs down so that they feel better. Sad really..

Wow. Almost too relaxed. OMG!
Damn Russ is such a tasteful player! awesome!
What a player!
i have this kit in the same finish minus the18 bass and the wood hoops. my favourite sounding kit, my sound.
I love the hoops on his kit! Just like Matt Cameron
Very Nice!! And the mapex Falcons, best overall kick pedal imho.
For real tho...that kit sounds absolutely amazing. Looks good too ^_^
So warm
Wow! So soft - but absolutely strong!
3 way ostinatos! on point!
Seven Steps to Heaven quote @ 4:13

@Stareplue With you on the that one. Superb playing.
God damn! His bass drum and his floor toms can cause an earthquake!
Can't remember the last time I saw someone with two different bass drum beaters. Interesting.
Right and left feet will usually have slightly different levels of strength, which will result in slightly different tone. The right foot in right-handed players is generally a little stronger, and thus yields a slightly more solid attack (vice versa for left-handed players).

wow!
He's a combo of Thomas Lang, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, and Tommy Igoe all rolled into one! YES!
My god--- If I were half good player he is... I wond't be writting this comment!
II keep watching this video he is so great at drums! But most important... The sound of the kit and the sound of his playing!
Awesome dynamics. A bit rare in today's drumming scene.
I think he is playing a Yamaha Oak Custom drumkit... But with wooden hoops... Incredible sound!
seven steps to heaven
Please explain the correlation between a year of study, and me (or anyone else) caring what you think?
Great sounding Yamaha
@ninjamanfromgreece, I don't think he's using the Vic Firth HingeStix, he's using his signature "Hi-Def" vic firth stick which has a black logo right where the sweet spot is for cross-sticking.
wowzer's
Where do I get the bass drum head with the wood graphic from? Those are really cool.
HE USES THE MAPEX FALCON! YES!
flute is awesome

perfectionist much? that kit sounds great!
:3 he uses a mapex falcon double pedal :D awesome bit of gear, soooo damn light and smooth, its like playing on air :D
Look up the video "Russ Miller Mapex Falcon Pedal Set-up discussion". He explains why he uses the different beaters in the video.
Is there a way to know what head configuration is he using... I see those are Remo's... But what... Emperors, Ambassadors... The bass sounds amazing, buy the kit sounds like a whole drum family... Incredible!
whats amazing is this guy couldn't even play basic beats until he picked up a pair of the Vic Firth drum sticks
photographerjonathan I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but several people in Africa, two in North Korea, and one in Mississippi were all just saved by Vic Firth drumsticks.
What ride is that right in-between the k custom dry ride and the 16" A custom crash?
its so pretty...
I think he may be referring to Russ signature sticks, which are called the HD stick.
THAT SOUND
That is the sexiest set ever...
he has his own signature series Russ Miller HD model--u can actually see the video 4 it on this channel
Curious that i had seen that rim type only in snares, and this time all drums have it except the snares. Does anyone know the effect this rim type has on the sound of drums?
Couldn't agree more.. Superior brushwork.. just ridiculously melodic.
i found that interesting too, i guess he just likes the falcon more, but i've seen him use 9000's before.
show me a video response of your technically accurate chops. I'm not a full time music student but I listen to some drummers and surely russ miller is one of those who I'm listening to.
i think because the feets have two different "feelings" or maybe to accent he's left foot or balance them and make in the same volume.
He has his own line of signature sticks, so I would assume it's those.
nice turn-ups
what are the wood block type things on the snares called?
dat kick
WHICH SNARE DRUM IS THISSSSSSSSSS?????????? need to knowwwwww ;)
zildjian cymbals sounds very good in his hands...
I've never seen that snare, which one is it?
They don't show which sticks those are. Anybody know?
