An infected uterus in a dog is called a pyometra. Pyometra is very common in the intact dog that has not been spayed.
In this video I cover how a dog gets a pyometra, how your veterinarian will diagnose a pyometra or infected uterus, and how your veterinarian will treat the pyometra.
An infected uterus (pyometra) in a dog usually develops shortly after the dog's heat cycle. The dog's heat cycle or Estrus helps to prepare the uterus for infection. The uterine lining becomes very thick and there is poor protection of the uterus when it comes to preventing infection.
Once the heat cycle is over, the cervix closes, but in some cases the uterus is now an ideal location for any residual bacteria to cause infection. Once the infection starts in the dog's uterus, it can grow out of control. A pyometra can become a very large infection. The pyometra infection will cause the dog to become very sick, and it can be life threatening. As the infection continues to grow, the uterus will continue to fill with more and more pus and bacteria.
The infection will then cause the dog to become lethargic, not want to eat, and sometimes develop of fever. If gone untreated, the dog pyometra is life threatening.
A veterinarian will complete lab work which needs to include a cbc. The cbc will show elevated white blood cell count from the uterine infection in the dog. Imaging like an x-ray (radiography) or ultrasound will also be needed to visualize the infected uterus.
Once the dog pyometra is diagnosed, the vet will put your dog on IV fluids and give antibiotics. Once the dog is stable, the dog will get surgery to remove the infected uterus and ovaries. The pyometra surgery is the same surgery as a spay, but it is more complicated and dangerous, because of all the infection.

I never knew this. My dog died during the surgery. They never stablized her before surgery. They phoned me and said it burst and they will have to euthanize her. She was 12yrs.
We loved her so much she was like a child to us.

I am so sorry to read this. You have my sympathy. Do know the spirit of your little dog lives on and you will be reunited. My little girl has just had this operation. Two vets within 2 days didn't diagnose pyometra, but the 3rd vet on the 3rd day did and the operation was successful, thank God. She means the world to me. Blessings from U. K.

Dog's souls certainly will Live on forever. And human souls are also immortal, but the difference is, animals are all Christians. Humans are not all Christians. If you want to be reunited with your pet, you have to go where they go. You have to follow Jesus. If you end up in Hell for eternity, you will definitely never see your pet again. They'll be in Paradise.
I pray you guys will be reunited with your wonderful sweet dogs!!!!!! ❤🐶✝️

Awww sorry reading this I lost my little girl 2 days ago I’m finding comfort in other people who’ve been through the same , we were optimistic about the surgery then the vet rang mid op said she’s got a growth mass could be cancerous or not but either way he can’t remove the uterus without moving this mass which is attached to her urethra an bladder so only option is put to sleep 😭😭😭😭😭
I never knew this could be so painful more than human family members

My toy poodle just had surgery today. The vet informed us that the chance of survival during the operation is 50/50. I'm thankful she got through it okay and hopefully will have a smooth recovery. I'm still so worried, though; I won't be able to feel relief unless I see her walking, eating, and playing like her jolly old self again. I wish I had found this video sooner so I'm more aware of this disease.

Right!! You would think as much as they push spays & nuetering that they would highlight the causes of not doing it. I was under the impression that they pushed dogs to get fixed just to not over populate and to have less aggressive male dogs. Had I known life threatening diseases would be the cause of not spaying I would have made this a priority years ago! I feel like a horrible pet parent 😭

i rescued a 15 year old Shih Tzu, turns out she was deaf, partly sighted, had to have her teeth clean and some removed, then suddenly she has heart murmur grade 3 to 4, then lung cancer but still goes strong and loves life, we didnt know if she was spayed i got her in december. 2nd april she isnt spayed she has a heat cycle very soon after i note something OFF back to vet. scan shows she has OPEN PYO. so the vet wouldnt do a spay because of her other health issues. so now on day 7 antibiotics and she is eating well, never had a temperature, loves to go out for her walks even before the diagnosis. So we are still moving forward. twice s day she has heart meds, and once a day her antibotic injfection. yesterday day six she ate all her food, her discharge is drained well she stopped smelling too.
thats important. PYO STINKS. if your dog has a discharge pyo STINKS.
so fingers crossed my amazing shit tzu bella will make it through this crisis too. honestly you would never think she had heart disease.

In your opinion what is best take a chance with a surgery on a 14 year old small terrier in great overall shape but with lifelong liver issues to avoid pyometra in the future or not spay and leave it as it is hoping it won't happen? I've noticed that she nearly not bled the past 2 cycles while in the past she had to wear a puppy diaper while in heat. I plan to take her to the vet as soon as I can schedule an appointment, unfortunately the clinic is closed over the weekend. Is there anything I can do to make the dog more comfortable in the meantime?

Hi Dan, please help me. Tomorrow is my dogs surgery. They say he have pyometra, she is 8 year old, never spayed and never gave birth. The only reason they say it is pyometra is because her CRP and WBC is high, but we did 3 blood test in 6 days, first was CRP 8 and WBC 18 000, then CRP 20 and WBC 18 000 now last test is CRP 64 and WBC 16 000, also she is normal, acting normal, eating and playing normal, there is nothing different in her behaviour. They also did 2x ultra sound, first they said it is not pyometra, now that it is. She did recived 5 days antibiotics and now they want to do surgery tomorrow. I dont know what to do. The reason we was at doctor is because she refused to eat for 1 day or drink and she had some wierd behaviour sniffing floor where she sit and also she cried and wanted to be hold 24/7 for whole day, but 2nd day she was better, now 7 th day she is last 5 days normal. Still i am afraid for surgery, what do u recomend?

Hi! I am sorry your doggy is not feel well. Surgery can be very scary. Sometimes it is easy to diagnose a pyometra, and other times it can be a bit harder. The tests a veterinarian does will help guide them to a diagnose to take the right surgical or medical steps to treat the problem or disease. There is no guarantee that surgery will find and resolve or pyometra, but if there is a pyometra your doggy will feel better and be healed after surgery. If there is no pyometra, having your dog spayed will prevent future pyometra. Please let me know how things go! Take care, Dr. Dan.

Also they did free of charge and cleaned her teeth as they found them with a lot of tar. She drinked little water, resting now. I wanted to ask, since she was 5 days on antibiotics + got them today and we have 1 to give her ourselfs tomorrow, but they said she dont need to recive more antibiotics after that, is this also ok? I have read online that usualy antibiotics are given post surgery as well. So she got 6 days of them before surgery and also will get last one tomorrow morning after which they stop giving. This last cycle she has been bleeding on and off. Sometimes small amounts sometimes larger. Sometimes no blood for a day and Im thinking its over next day starts again. At first it was more red. Now its thick and brownish orange.

It seems to be a much more intensive spay than the regular spay. Imo they both should be treated with the same urgency spays are widely cheap and sometimes free but the pyometra spay is $1000 - $1500 which is insane. She was completely fine with no obvious symptoms at all and one afternoon suddenly collapsed, I thought she was exhausted because we were sitting in the sun so I put her in her bed and stayed with her. The next morning I noticed some pus coming out of her cervix, she also didn’t want to eat and was lethargic. So I took her to the vet immediately. They gave her antibiotics, she was a little better ate and even took a walk with me. The very next day I took her to do the surgery to remove her uterus.. she came out of surgery barely moving and they let me take her home and gave me a treatment plan. She died a few hours later. Vet said her blood was already poisoned she had septicemia. What did I do wrong?? Please I can’t process this I feel so guilty what could I have done differently? Why did this happen??

The surgery for this is extremely overpriced. Few thousand dollars. Most people don't have 3 grand tucked away for a surgery

      @DanTheVeterinarian  6 місяців тому

It is an expensive surgery. Our clinic usually bills owner about 1k, but that includes everything from x-rays, lab work, surgery, post operative IV fluids and antibiotics. The emergency clinics are usually in the ballpark of 3k though. Always try to go through your general practice vet.

If its bacterial why not just pescribe antibiotics and see if it clears up instead of surgery

The infected uterus will cause the dog to go septic. :( It needs to go.

Is she spayed? If not it may be from her heat cycle or an infection try to convince your parents that something may be wrong!

Part of me doesnt understand why pet owners need to spay because i was ignorant and thought it was a liberal thing , like instead of drinking cow milk its almond. its like when God created animals he didnt know fully what He was doing and they need to be stayed . what about the wolves in the wild . i had to put my dog down today :( ah

Wolves in the wild get pregnant and don't have the issue. We get pets and don't allow their natural process to occur. We keep them locked up when they are in heat.
