In this Shot In The Dark guitar lesson video, we will take an in-depth look at one of the last Ozzy Osbourne songs that the great guitarist Jake E. Lee performed on.
There are a lot of cool guitar riffs in this one and the solo is full of flashy 80's guitar licks. Tons of fun!
Before we get started, you will need to get your guitar into a tuning that is quite unorthodox. Jake E. Lee used the following tuning starting from the 6th string (F Bb Db Gb Bb Eb). That tuning is basically the standard half-step down tuning used by many rock guitarists, however, in addition to the that, Jake E. Lee raises the pitch of the lowest two strings in order to help facilitate the playing of the guitar riffs.
You will see people play this in a more standard tuning, but it is more more difficult to play that way. What we are learning here is exactly how the song was recorded.
In the first video lesson, I will show you how to play all of those classic guitar riffs, along with any of the guitar fills that happen sporadically throughout the song. The riffs in "Shot In The Dark" can be pretty challenging. You will need move around pretty quickly and play some large stretches. One of Jake E. Lee's favorite techniques is using large stretches, so you can't really play his songs without coming upon some licks or riffs that require you to really spread those fingers out.
In the second video lesson, I will finish up the song by teaching you how to play the guitar solo. The solo has some very fast legato work and once again moves across the fretboard at very fast speeds.
There is also a cool arpeggio section of the solo which is followed by a rapid tremolo picked section. The tremolo section should be performed with your picking hand wrist and forearm as relaxed as possible. Make sure you use very small but relaxed movements. Those movements should come from the wrist.
So I hope you guys enjoy learning the Ozzy Osbourne classic! I would definitely say that it is one of my favorite Ozzy songs. :)
Carl...
From the tuning to the melody...pure genius.Jake is responsible for not letting Ozzy sound like all the other 80s bands.
i've played guitar for over 35 years - i never did learn this and wow my mind is blown. Jake E Lee was the man and really was a fabulous player
Jake E Lee : "The song was originally written in [the key of] A, so you have the open strings that you can chug along with. The day before I was going to go into the studio to record my parts, the producer Ron Nevison told me; “Oh, by the way, ‘Shot In The Dark’ is in B now”. And I’m like; “Wait a minute, what?” He said; “Yeah, we moved it up so Ozzy’s vocals would work better”. Okaaay. So I had that night to figure out how to chord everything and fret everything, and it was just a lot easier for me to keep the open A chugging string, so I tuned that up to a B, a whole step, and I tuned the E, I believe, also up a whole step that they would match each other. So it’s standard tuning for E,B,G,D, and then the A and the E strings are up a little step. It made for some interesting chord inversions, so it worked out really well. During the Ozzy tours I would have a guitar specially tuned that way, but on the last Red Dragon Cartel run, we popped the song out, and I played it with a standard tuning. So, you can still play it in standard tuning.” (Interview with Eon Magazine)
Still is !
This is a testament to how great Jake E. Lee was!
And for me I thought this was one of the worst songs on the album. Just seemed to "commercial" and kinda watered down. The rest of the songs were just technically crazy incredible. But this is a fun song though I give it that..
But, isn’t this tune composed by Phil Soussan?
Genius. Who would think of tuning down those two strings to make it easier to play?? Umm, Jake would. Awesome break down and lesson.
Yes Phil wrote it while in his other band prior to being w/ Ozzy. But then he took it to Ozzy and the reworked the lyrics. Jake came up w/ the guitar parts. And this video is about the guitar playing in this song, which is Jake. Jake came up with his parts of how he wanted to play it. But, if you look at the Album Ultimate Sin. Jake collaborated w/ writing all the songs except for this one.. and this is the only song that didn't quite fit. For me always seemed like an after thought song or like a song they needed to make a full album and they went with it. Way to commercial and radio friendly compared to what Jake was writing. Most of the songs were about War, the after math of war etc. This was during the whole Russia, Cold War thing, where I remember our schools doing drills in case of a nuclear attack etc. But, all these songs are about that and then Shot in the Dark comes in and it's not related whatsoever to the theme. But this is Phils song Jake didn't get credit w/ writing.
Very much so!! And still is!!!
After Eddie heard Jake play at a show in the early 80s he approached him backstage and told Jake that he was the best guitarist he'd heard come out of california since himself. Ed hated the plethora of imitators that came after him but he knew talent when he saw it.
01:00 harmonics
04:33 main riff
07:25 clean verse
10:32 pre chorus
12:35 chorus
16:06 second chorus
17:50 bridge
19:40 outro filas
Carl, you're a badass guitar player...
Wow. This nutty tuning speaks to Jake's talent. And more so to your talent for figuring it out and being able to teach it.
I know this is like 6 years late lmao, but Im pretty sure Jake just tunes everything a half step down and just plays the 2nd fret wherever carl plays open strings etc. The palm mutes in the main riff are the 7th fret of the low e (now tuned to D#) etc etc. Don't mean to knock anyone, just saying this for anyone out there wondering. If you see jake play it live he always does it this way, so idk if he just plays it in Eb standard live cause he doesnt wanna do this tuning, or recorded it that way.
The tabs in guitar magazine in '87 showed the Jake's tuning and then all the rest as well.
Jake was like the Beethoven of harmonics I see. Needed this, riff plays in my head like voices now I can learn it. Good instruction and chops. Not mechanical but with emotion. You rock!!
Jake is such a underrated guitar player
Underrated by who?
i know it's pretty off topic but do anybody know of a good website to stream new series online?
@Camilo Rylan Flixportal :P
@Marcus Beckham Thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it!
@Camilo Rylan You are welcome =)
30 years after this song was released, I think I might finally be able to learn it! Great lesson.
Man, being still an amateur in guitar for various reasons, I can genuinely say how much I understand what you say. Soo tricky to play if one does not have the "picture" of this tuning/riffing. On the negative side (of mine), I could have simply looked out for it much earlier. Mistakes I am sad about (the least)...
It was actually originally recorded in 1983 by a British band called Wildlife who later became FM.
+Iestyn Davies Really, wow that's interesting for sure!!
+Iestyn Davies Just listened to it by Wildlife. That is way kewl!! Really appreciate it!!!
When someone says "Why do you need so many guitars?" This is the video to show them.
You would spend 90% of your time tuning if you didn’t.
Man I cant get enough of your videos. You've taught me so much over the years. Thank you very much carl, you really are great!
So
Lucky to have Carl teaching and learning notes.
Tks Carl
I just have to say, Carl Brown is fabulous. I actually see 78 thumbs downs, I'm thinking that just simply must be competitors of Carl. Carl is extremely good at teaching music and guitar and explains exceptional well. Thank you Carl.
You're absolutely right about Carl! This song is spot on, so the 78 thumbs down is just ridiculous! It's like having a thumbs down for a video saying 2 plus 2 is 4! It can't be anything other than haters, trolls, or just someone being an ass!
Jake E Lee doesn't get enough credit for how talented he was
By far, the best tutorial for this song out there...MASS props to you, sir!!👍
He has the best lessons period. It’s more for intermediate players too which is great he moves quickly which I love
😳😳😳😳
What a crazy tuning...
Great lesson. Brilliant song. And you realise how expert Jake is. he makes it sound easy
👍🏼Thanks. That tuning makes perfect sense now. 30+ yrs later… lol
Jake E. Lee is a Phenomenal player and writer!
Saw him with Ozzy in mid 80’s. Saying in front row being gagged by the fog machines. Just incredible!!!
JEL had an amazing flickback upstroke fluidity that gives this tune a great heavy groove.
You are just AMAZING... I, like many others, enjoy both watching you play and teach.
I've been trying to learn for about a year, I have these aspirations to play these types of songs. They sound awesome but also easy to me, But then I watch you play them and I'm like OMG I'll never be able to play this stuff. Thanks for what you do, it's great to see all that's involved to make such great sound.
1:30 Tuning. Great lesson and playing brother. Thank you so much!
Carl just echoeing some other comments! THANKS! We all appreciate your wisdom and dedication! ! This is a difficult song to translate and play! And with your lesson i have a great chance of playing it just like Jake!!! THANKS!!
Hi Carl, Your nut handles the bend and release very well, and your guitar sound is very clear for such an overdriven patch. It's great to hear good intonation and clarity. cheers
Carl,....with the manliest attitude I say ' I love you man !'.......been looking for a long time for a good lesson on this song...Thank you very much !!
"It's Jake E. Lee and it's got some tricky stuff in it."
Other quotes during this video:
"Water is wet."
"Red is a color Sammy Hagar likes."
"The sun is kind of big."
=D
Just busting your chops. Seriously, I'm a Randy Rhodes and EVH disciple, but Jake is the best guitarist Ozzy ever worked with. Go listen to Badlands if you don't believe me.
Great lesson brother. Thanks and God bless you for sharing your knowledge and skills with us newbies. Amen

Hi bro I follow you for log time ago and all the songs that I know are for you help thanks so much you are amazing teacher Meaby in the future you can teach us the solo of dreamer by ozzy I really would like Learn that thanks bro
I used to play this in a band 17 years ago in the tuning you explained yet I have forgot how to play it or what the tuning is , so I'm back 🤪
If I only learn to master this one song before I die I'll be happy
I can play the opening riff in standard Eb, but you're correct, its challenging.
Legend Music! Great guitar! Thanks, Carl!
May i ask you which amp and effectpedals do you use? This sound is so beautiful and has a good distortion...superb
Throwing my Floyd Rose in this tuning for just one song hurts but is so worth it
Funky tunings are a good reasoning for multiple guitars.
Agreed!!!!
May I ask what amp did you use in this lesson? 😎
When it takes me longer to tune for the song, then learn it. 😂
HOOOOLY SHIIIIIIT,ALL THESE YEARS LISTENING TO THIS SONG,& DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS PLAYED LIKE THIS @guitarlesson365song
awsome lesson. could you do sweet soul sister by the cult.
I like your teaching techniques:) This was awesome:)

Can you please do weight of love by the black keys!!!
this is great! thank you!
AMAZINNNGGGG
GL365S,
Does Jake E Lee use this tuning throughout this album? What about "Bark..."? Also, does he use in Badlands as well? I'm hoping he doesn't in the Badlands albums because I can play those will no problem. It was the album "Ultimate..." I always had problems with and the alt. tuning makes sense! Thanks for the enlightenment!
No. this is the only song he ever used this tuning on. Some background on this though - the day they were going to record this song, Ozzy wasn't feeling up to the original key it was in and that is why Jake tuned the E & A string up to match his vocal. Also, I spoke with Jake a couple years ago and (as you can see from recent video of him playing it), he has learned to play it in regular tuning - which is hard as hell - and a testament to what a badass he is - and doesn't play it with that weird tuning anymore. Also, this is the one song that Ozzy's bass player at that time, Phil Sousan, wrote on the album. It was not Jake song. Phil, coincidentally, went on to play with Beggars & Thieves, the band that Jake played in their video for "We Come Undone" just before coming back out in the music industry again. Ronnie Mancuso, guitarist for Beggars & Thieves toured part of Jake's first Red Dragon Cartel tour as his bassist. Ronnie was instrumental is getting Jake back in the music scene and form the Red Dragon Cartel. If you haven't heard Red Dragon Cartel yet, go get it NOW
scotto0010
Really appreciate the reply on my questions. Thanks! Yes, I've listened to the Red Dragon Cartel. I'm glad he's back playing again! Jake is a very clever guitarist and one of my favorite!
Great lesson. It’s always a pain to have to tune and retune back the guitar. You can easily play it without tuning and a capo 1st fret. Won’t work for the harmonics though!
great teaching im getting closer to randy
Your channel rules
Well i guess i gotta get a new guitar because i just setup my floyd rose to e standard
Thats how I got good at setting up a floyd....having to go back and forth from standard to half step flat...then I just got a second floyd guitar!!!!
I didn't even know about this song but it's pretty good. Also, do you think you could do Bang Your Head by Quiet Riot?
Very nice.
How are you getting that sound? Whats the set up? Pretty close!
This song wasn't it written by Ozzy's bass player at the time? Phil sausin or something Ozzy said he'd never play this song again live
It was written by Steve and Chris Overland with input from Phil Soussan when Soussan was briefly in the Overlands' band Wildlife. Sadly Phil Soussan appears to have forgotten he didn't solely own the song when he offered it to Ozzy.
When giving guitar lessons on two note diad or double stop chords being played, it would be helpful if you would just use two fingers, such as your index and middle finger, and left the other fingers completely off the fret board, so we can see the notes being played easier.
Then, show us with the proper fingers.
This particular song is one of the hardest songs to learn because the teachers don’t properly highlight the notes being played by leaving fingers not being used off the fret board,
The same with theQueensreiche stuff, and other songs structured around diad chords.
aw yisss! Ozzy Osbourne!
i love your channel! can you please do sabbra cadabra? no other channel has done it yet :)
Bravo !!!
What is that lock nut thing u mentioned in the beginning I'm so confused
also, what pedal are you using? Thanks
hi....this halftone below the original tuning of the guitar?
High Hopes by Pink Floyd please
Just throw that in, deedle deedle deedleee deedle deedle deedleee. Saw ya grinin on that part too. Micro expressions... show off. And Thank You too dude, most of all!!!
