Thanks for this, I was watching thinking "nah, the colours are too messy, it's freaking me out" then suddenly on with the brown and all was well. Genuinely inspiring stuff
Paint wise use Vallejo over Citadel - model wise I broke mine down into smaller sections, as I wanted a really scruffy work area, where an Ork Truck was being serviced and stripped of valuable metals. Cheers Guy Orks rule my Work Bench, that and Necromunda bases.
Who would have thought that three years later this video would help me identify those pesky sprue bits still attached to the centers of the barricades, right before I'm about to go out and prime my Octarius terrain? Thanks Guy!
"If you're just starting out, don't waste your money on Citadel Paints." I cannot *stress* enough how accurate this is. Vallejo is cheaper per milliliter, higher quality, comes in an even larger range of colors, and comes in those convenient dropper bottles that won't lead to you running through your paint quickly or having it dry out in a year.
I moved my Citadel mediums and varnish to droppers as it's less chance of contaminating them and i get more precise ratios. Other than that, I don't have any problems with the jars and paint drying out. Just make sure the pot is closed all the way and don't get paint up on the lip. Another benefit of the pot is that you can more easily brush out that last cubic mm of paint without needing to add flow improver into a dropper to recover every penny of paint.
Nice vid. I like using Citadels sepia wash on metallic machine parts, it gives a nice built up grease look to engines and pistons. Even putting it on the bottoms of sheets to give a great worn look.
The other thing I tried that worked out better than expected was to use texture paints (mars iron crust for example) painted into the corners of scenery pieces. Gives them a nice deserted, no-one has swept up in decades, kinda look. I then use a shade colour the build up. I’ve also used the astrogranite debris in corners and edges to give the fallen plasterwork look. Man I gotta start painting again.
I literally prepped them all an hour ago. Only missed the one connected to the light blubwire hahaha, I feel so successful! Til tomorrow when I start painting and I quickly realize I'd need to do 100 of these before I could do them as well as this video 😊
@@MidwinterMinis it an Ork thing I think. I got out my old def coptas recently and noticed spots that still had sprue in them lol. Thanks for the videos, looking forward to more.
Personally I would not recommend using a spray primer when its rainy but it seems you got good results. You've got some real talent at this whole painting thing. You are definitely worth subscribing to
Yeah, me too, but I had committed to doing this project on a particular day, and as soon as I opened the door to start priming it started raining. I just stood in the doorway and sprayed in silent sadness, haha.
Totally agree with the citadel stuff especially their metallics, If you want some serious hard working metallics then the Vallejo Acryllic Metal Color range is awesome, they're meant for airbrushing but can be brushed on straight out of the pot and no other paint range can beat it. The Army Painter also do some decent metallics as well their Gun Metal is a great alternative to Leadbelcher.
Fantastic video yet again. Great tutorial with excellent production, and the time stamping and list of paints used are excellent as well. If I could make one suggestion; have another look at which tags you’re using on your videos, as the “up-next” and “suggested” videos on your content are all weird Elsa-gate style exploitative videos. Maybe avoid the “howto & style” category?
Thank you!... and yeah, I totally agree. Oh my god, those videos creep me right out. Hopefully it's just because the video and my channel are new, so it's still finding the right place for my videos in its algorithm.
My Leadbelcher from two years ago looks fine. On the other hand I've had terrible experience with the Vallejo paints I started out with five years back, they were guff and inconsistent when I got them.
To give you a little feedback. Very good looking models and devent quick job, defenetly. But why didnt you do the bulbs in a transparent yellow finish? Except the broken one. That would give the impression of a dark bad orc party :D The lying around tiers, for my feeling a little to blue, I would maybe do them with another black wash to seperate them more from the blue metal to be more like tires.
Guy you forgot to drybrush them with rust both in heavy format and in lightweight so it gives a better complexity of weathering! See Penny's photo managed to creep in for a second or two?
Ooo, good question! Y'know, I still think of myself as an airbrush amateur, so I'm not sure of the exact advice to give, but I usually just spray at 30psi, thin with water, but make sure the consistency is very light. Aim for something like really horrible "low fat" milk, or artist ink.
Hi Peter, I got my setup from Everything Airbrush. I have to say, they were absolutely exceptional from start to finish, definitely in the top 5 customer service experiences I've ever had. I don't usually gush about stores, but holy balls, they really were amazing.
Egads man! Why did you have to make the tutorial so creepy .. contrasted with your friendly voice and wholesome manner of speaking, i didn't even realise I was creeped out until minute 10
I agree that citadel pots aren't the best but it's also your fault for not being careful, most of the time I see them in your videos they're not properly closed
To be fair, in regards to the Citadel paint pots, you NEED to take care of them if you want to make them last. That isn't a guarantee they will survive, but you need to clean the rim of the pot after every use, or else you risk a build-up which will cause them to not seal properly, which will dry them out. Yes, the pots could be designed better, but it's up to the user to properly take care of their equipment too. Also, I doubt they will ever switch to droppers, because more dried up paints = more sales on overpriced paints.

Still holds up well Guy! You've definitely refined your style since, but this does show you're a natural at videomaking!
absolutely awesome tutorial, love your very clear step by step process. Makes life much easier for us noobs.
You're so welcome! Glad you found it useful :)
HaHA
This will be very helpful when kill team: octarius box comes out, especially with those cheeky hidden sprues in the terrain!! 😄
those damn rouge sprue bits

Awesome tutorial, thank you very much! Just got the speed freeks set and an airbrush, so this one's perfect practice for me!
Welcome to Airbrushtown, matey! Enjoy your stay
These look terrific! I'm getting a Kill Team Octarius box and this technique will really come in handy. I'm going to need that DIY dip recipe.

Yeah, it's a shame that advice is so important, given how superb the Citadel range used to be.
debatable whether it's "higher quality".

Coat de Arms still sells paint. If you want real Citadel paint, it’s still around
Craft paint is cheaper. Just add a few drops of el-cheapo brand paint to distilled water and matte medium to get perfect paint for minis.
Man you make me want orks so bad 😭 but only just re starting the hobby and already got 4 different armies I want to build 🤣
Another great tutorial. Chuffed to see my models featured and yes what are the chances, Sand stone Necrons and Guardians Dark Angels in common.
Bonkers! We should have a game if I'm up in Scotland at some point :)
Midwinter Minis deff. Plenty tables at the ready.

Great idea! That's one of the washes I don't actually have... maybe it's time to take a visit to my hobby shop :D

Excellent tutorial! Lots of great tips and tricks in there that can be used on all kinds of models or terrain pieces.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)
I started laughing so hard to the duncan at 14:04

That was so freaky, fs
“A nice tabeltop standard”
*what do your display models look like if that is “tabletop standard”?!*
Haha, the trick is... I never paint display models ;)
Well done. Looks great
I missed those parts inside the windows with both sets I did...
It's too easy, right? They look like they're part of the design :)

Thank you! I made it :) More coming soon.
Thanks. Well paced, informative. I would love to see how you might do grime or rust streaks? Have subscribed.
Thanks for the feedback :) Great idea, I'll consider that for a future video.
Wow this looks great dude. Going to fire up the compressor and see if I can give this a shot.
Thank you, kind sausage.
As an American I’ve never heard the word shonky but I’ll be sure to incorporate it into my vocabulary
Amazing tutorial! Keep up with the generous work!
Cool work! This is a great pace

Sure! You can obviously work these suggestions in, but this was a speed paint, not trying to make every little thing just right. Just, good enough ;)
Really good...again
Too kind! :)
I've just got this ,starting on it tomorrow nervous
I will so use this on my kill team box :D....IF I GET ONE!
Still available for preorder, hopefully you got one :)
So great!
Di9d you also paint the Speed Freeks cars? I'd love to see a series with one car in each video.
I have them, but haven't painted them yet. Maybe in a future episode!
I do miss the old GW paint pots.
Things of beauty ;)
Great Tutorial...
Thank you!
Good tutorial, music, commentary - sub for me 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it Tommy! :)
One last step you could do is drybrush gently some dusty sand color on the pieces, as they are lying in the desert and sand gets everywhere
Yeah, you could do!
Big thanks.
You're welcome!

With scatter terrain models like this, you can really go to town on weathering :)

Do you not find halfords primers goes abit rough or just me?
Oh... I invested a lot on Citadel paints :( I've had them for almost a year now, and no issues but... should I be worried?
Where did you get your airbrush and compressor from please? Looking to get into airbrushing and also in UK.

Banksy! 😍
Try getting some kitchen towel. i.e. Blitz for drybrushing. It's much less likely to flake off and get paper on your brush.
Yeah! I usually use a little slice of MDF, absorbent without making a mess :)
Well this is going to be useful...
Great vid
Use a large drybrush? That confused me when you used a small citadel drybrush
I use old size 2s for small drybrushes ;)
@@MidwinterMinis ohhhhhhhhh.... Ok
Rumour has it; if you store GW paints upside down, any "drying" prevents further leaks.
Instructions unclear, dislocated neck reading labels...
wow thanks

Union Flag.
It's only a Jack if it's flying on a Naval Jack Mast.
Apparently that whole Jack/Flag naming convention is just made up. It can be either, on land or sea.
