Proud New Orleans expat here, just asked my 8 year old kiddo who was playing, and without even looking at the screen, he said “Dat’s Dr. John!” (With a ‘duh’ look on his face) ⚜️
New Orleans jazz fest. the rain was pouring down, thousands stood there waiting, thankful for the rain because it was hot that day, and in walks dr john and he says if you are crazy enough to stay I am crazy enough to play,,
Sometimes when Dr. John is playing, I can clearly see a boy and his dog playing and growing up together, his sound somehow encompasses the true joys of life.
Every master throughout history has taken a simple theme and then embellished it with endless variety, imbued with a unique spirit, all the while making it seem effortless. All anyone else can hope to do is copy them and achieve a tiny fraction of their original organic improvisation. Thank you Dr. John!
Dr. John has such EFFORTLESS control, rock solid timing, and SLIPPERY transitions. I saw him live probably 18 years ago or so with my Dad. We couldn't understand a single word he spoke, but who needs words when you can speak like this ; )
@@therabidscorpion Yep he did. He kept playing some guitar, but after his finger was shot (!), piano seemed easier. Most of us probably would’ve given up then, but as a teen who was born and raised with reverence toward music, and who didnt have many other options due to a checkered legal past from his youth, it was inevitabe Doc would find any way he could to continue with music
So glad i met you Doc . You were so kind to me and i even carried your famous snake walking cane . When i shook your hand and thanked you . I said i waited 2 hours outside to speak to you and 20 years plus for this meeting . It was a meeting i will always treasure . Still miss you Brother where ever you are Mr New Orleans . R I.P My friend
Absolutely magnificent! All you need is Mac Rebennack and a piano. I've spent so many hours listening to this most beloved artist. When the day comes that he passes away, there had better be a statue of his ass alongside Louis Armstrong, Professor Longhair and James Booker or I'll be one mad m f.
Marshall Clyburn Dr. John would never ever call him "Satchmo", his father taught to call him Mr. Louis Armstrong.!It shows the respect they had for the Blues.
His piano style, timing and rhythm were above and beyond. What a talent he was. Rest easy Doc anyone who has heard you play knows how amazing you were and we are blessed to have clips like this to always remember you with and show others to your wonderful world of musicianship. Thank you for all you did for us all to hear, remember and cherish!
Mac is one of the best Musicians to ever play an instrument.. When i saw him play with Leon Russell, i had to change my Underwear, It was that Great. Cousin Figel
Cousin Figel When and where did you see them play together. They were friends, at least back in the 70's. Of course they knew each other much earlier than that.
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Maximilian Garrett I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
When I get the blues I ALWAYS call Doctor John, works every time, washes em right away!!! Smooth slidin' on them golden keys in Heaven now, thanks Doc...❤🙏❤
Sweetest reverie his versatility and virtuoso on the piano a musical peak performance he left a music legacy for generations of jazz aficionados to rediscover. His picture with bandana and top hat makes a great book jacket for his memoirs.
This is extraordinary. By rights it shouldn't work. It's so understated it's almost funny. And at the same time it's completely captivating. They absolutely broke the mould when they made him.
Hey Mac, You are the man! Most piano players jump up to those high notes right out of the gate....you make us beg to hear some highs - and we love you for that! Respect!
RIP Mac. I was hooked to Dr John's music from the moment I heard, and watched, him play and sing "Such a Night" on "The Last Waltz" film. An accomplished musician, most of all, a superb pianist/keyboard player, Dr John was an outstanding interpreter of Blues and Cajun music, but also equally at home with jazz and swing. I loved this man, and always will. God bless you Mac.
Thankyou DrJohn for all the fantastic music plus from my discovering you via The (The Band breakup line up) on The Last Waltz , to 😊❤❤❤ Byron Blues Fest Au live
Absolutely a certified doctorate class,no pun intended,in the blues....even if u don't play the piano ,or any instrument....your now vertifi ded on the blues, by none other than the late great Dr. John....t.y man. Priceless!!! ..
What a talent! So sad to hear the old master has passed away. RIP Dr. John, thank you for the great music you brought to us. May you sing with the angels Night Tripper god bless and fly high.
for me personally, I find that practicing will only take me so far. You gotta feel it. This man feels it. I think he always has. I love this man. So amazing.
When you listen to Russian Roulette “Van Morrison and he sings “I'm going down New Orleans, I've got to see Dr. John Got my mojo working everything will be fine” you know a man has left his mark on music. Dr.John will live on in his music and Influence long after we are dust.
Such respect for this gentleman, Longhair, and Toussaint. I just wanted to ask if there is a name for this song if there is one. I can't gather a particular composer because it has stride, ragtime, blues, gospel, all right there with this liquid smooth transitions the 1-4-5 is buried deep under the modulated things he's doing. This is incredible and just as difficult as classical to play. I'm not aware if this is an actual song I'm not up on New Orleans music catalog. My wife and I honeymooned in New Orleans and saw the Allen Toussaint tribute show at Hard Rock then the real thrill was at Snug Harbor seeing Ellis Marsalis (RIP) live. He did a version of "Someday Mr Prince Will Come" by Miles Davis that was incredible. The roots of so much music comes from New Orleans, jazz included. If anyone knows the name of this, if there is one, please post.
Such a great soul and gift who I had hoped to meet in person by somehow stalking one day in New Orleans (lol). Thanks for your contribution, not only to music, but to humanity in how you used your obviously divinely inspired gift/musicality to engage the soul in the myriad of contemplations life brings, from the highs to the lows, and all of the 'funk' in between (hehe). :') 🎹🙏
I shared this clip with an old friend who is a long-time jazz/blues fanatic, and he replied that it was dull, repetitive and didn't "go anywhere" or build into anything interesting. As a pianist myself I feel it grooves along nicely with interesting little peaks and teases, and resolves well. Just wondered what you other musicians or jazz listeners think? Am I just a deluded fan who's hearing something that's not there? 🤔
This was a DEMO of SOME of his devices on a simple chord progression, for the benefit of us viewers. Catching up to a bunch of these is nice work, to play em or just listen. His body of work is loaded with involved stuff on many levels.

Shit, that must be an amazing moment!!!!
Thank you for this🧡
It is amazing what he can do with a 12 bar blues.
RIP Dr. John. I hope you are on a great galactic ship to infinity and beyond!

We lost a legend. None like him! Everybody keep playing whatever you can to keep this music alive.
I do, as often as I can ! x.
He is so effortlessly good.
2024, Dr. John continues to amaze a generation
Dr. John has such EFFORTLESS control, rock solid timing, and SLIPPERY transitions. I saw him live probably 18 years ago or so with my Dad. We couldn't understand a single word he spoke, but who needs words when you can speak like this ; )
Yup. I understood every note
And on the 7day, Gog listen to some piano blues, and saw that it was good. And He called it I Am Dr.john.
Hard to believe he started out as a guitar player.

RIP you FANTASTIC CAT, you. Miss you already. Thanks for all the great music.
Dr. John is the reason I got into piano in the first place.
Alvin Fritscher aw yisss. For me it was Fess and Hugh Laurie
Same here. I played piano already but he's the reason I learned blues and boogie and it's just about all I play on piano to this day.
Mine was jerry lee lewis, but i love the doctor, its one of my favourites too
Beautiful. He's a National treasure.
Now that's some proper blues piano! Down and dirty and greasy, with that great left hand. Never fails to satisfy. Thank you for posting!!

What about champion Jack Dupree and fats Domino
Jimmy Yancey is one of the most inspired piano players I've ever heard. I love his style.
John Clearly- could almost fill his shoes if he passed away. I pray that day never comes.
I never heard this number before -- very good. Dr. John is a great hero of mine, and he just got better at the piano the older he got. RIP Mac

He was so talented, and very intelligent when interviewed. He was a force for integrity and honest playing...
He is a force 😎
Cooking up a nice bowl of Gumbo with dr John playing in the background. Life is good.
Yeah man, it is indeed good after all.

I thought of Leon Russell, listening to this wonderful shot of blues energy! Piano love hits hard.

Max is having a hell of a good time in heaven's funkiest blues bar.
Thy will be done in heaven and on earth. Great vibes.
I love the way the bass echoes the treble (the right hand). This is not easy but it just seems so natural for him. I wish he was still here...
