Lennox package unit low on refrigerant

- This video was filmed during the summer, however I just got around to editing and uploading it.
I return to a unit we had to service twice over the summer. We added refrigerant both times and attempted to find the leak. I am going to do a thorough leak check to try and find this mystery leak- where in the world could it be.

I had the same type of a leak through the low pressure control and it was venting from the wires into the wire nut. We changed it out and I still have it in my van as a Trophy! I'm a believer!

I have had a few that i went ahead and replaced the Schrader valve stems and low pressure switch,being that i did get hit and miss,well that being said,on one particular one i did both high and low pressure switches and stems..being low cost items, and have yet to go back to recharge...but my gut lennox evap.coil ...?? ( hairline crack at header(s), as you mentioned , more than likely.

There is only so much we can do as contractors/ technicians.,especially when its a small leak..Defitinely a leak somewhere..

Thanks Joseph- it left me scratching my head since I was able to pull such nice tight vacuum as well- Just going to have to see what happens this coming summer
If it leaks again, lift up the cond. fan motor & shine a really bright flashlight on that microchannel on the inside & look for faint oil stain spots. That crap will drive you crazy with super micro leaks. But the oil stains are the dead giveaway that the leaks do exist 👍

Good video bud, i think you did all the right steps. If i was in this situation the following year that pressures were low, I would defiantly inject some dye. Sometimes with formicary corrosion it can really be hard to pinpoint on commercial units. p.s. thanks;)

I agree on trying higher pressure, I had a York package unit with a micro channel coil .I did a leak check with nitrogen and 410a mixture at least 325 on pressure to find the leak on the bottom corner of condenser coil. Great video thanks for sharing.

Ac service tech had a good tip on checking for leaks at schrader cores. He drilled a hole in a plastic valve cap and put bubbles on the valve cap. I have been using that tip since I watched his video. Thought to pass it forward.

You mentioned an internally leaking pressure control, leaking from the wires. I have seen that. It really blew my mind. In fact my boss missed it when he was in "I'll show you" mode. Neither one of us would have believed it if we didn't see for our selves. That particular job confounded all of us.
Two things.
Nº1: I know your hate it, I hate it and sure the most of the techs in this room hate it but: Some shoot o dye? as a last resort.
Nº2: I remember some of the high-techs here in his youtube channel filmed a couple of wires of a presure switch leaking... not sure if was Ulises Palacios, Eric Mele, Alex... didn't remember... but had a beautiful pair of wires leaking soooo good.

Thanks Juan- If I remeber correctly I did check the wires and switches and didnt get a hit but I would love to find a leaking pressure switch one day, just because there so rare. Im going to see if they call us back out this summer, if so I may need to add dye-- if so I will film a follow up

one of our priorities from the manufacturer a magic airhandler the capillary tubes are usually right against the blower motor housing and over time it made kinchs or small holes in the tubes. good for me able to find the leak right away but sucks for the resident tho. I hate these kinda leaks that are impossible to find. nice work

The nitrogen is added on top of the freon. I' wondering how the nitrogen and the feron can be separated.

Instead of using bubbles on the ports use a drop of nylog. So if you need to put your gauges back on you won't chance getting moisture in the system.
I'm really enjoying your videos.
Dont forget to pop the cover and check the compressor terminals bakelite for leaks. Some leaks will only show up with thermal expansion - UV dye additives sometimes help with finding that type, just be sure it is compatible with that type of oil in system.
Here come the "why aren't you using a bluvac micron gauge" and "you can't pull a proper vacuum without 18" diameter hoses" guys. I hate these type of leaks. I've been known to jack the pressure up into the 400-500 psi range. If it blows.....it blows.

Leave your gage on over night and check it in the morning

Try to spray soapy water over the microchanel coils and maybe you can see the leak 👍
I should have soaked it in bubbles-
Ninety percent of the time the leak leaves an oil mark... the problem is that annoying 10% in which it will leave an oil stain after years of refilling and the machine makes us look useless and some once I thought I heard her laughing at me
My old GE H-10 will detect the tiny amount of gas which seeps out the valve of a halon fire extinguisher.
I need me an H10- Ive heard great things about them

Hey Rick- If I remeber correctly, which I sometimes I dont, I think they where a pound ish low on the previous techs visits-- its in my notes attached to that customers account and since it was a few months ago that bit of info escapes me. I wonder if maybe my leak detector is or was having issues
You may want to try ultrasonic leak detection.

300 microns and no decay psh . If there is a leak you’re micron gauge isn’t calibrated no way you would achieve that on a leak. Idk how touchy that cps is but I always have the microns creep a little then settle on the bluvac gauges yours was just instant 0 rise.
I agree- maybe theres a refrigerant huffer in the area or they have a maintenance guy who likes attaching gauges everytime he visits

Hey Jimbola- Im satisfied with it so far, there have been two or three other occasions where I suspected a leak but it never went off-- which could be because there isnt really a leak, I know some customers who have preventative maintenance done and want there refrigerant levels checked everytime
Why not dye n bye that way if its does leak again that'll be Easier to pinpoint thoughts!
GeneK Hvacr die is a contaminant. Oil and refrigerant are the only things that should go into a circuit.
I would consider it as a last resort but before that I would repeat everything I did there, maybe up the pressures a bit and isolate each component of the system
So I had a York package unit. One circuit flat the other low on charge. Using an ultrasonic leak detector I found both leaks in less than 5 minutes. We had a safety meeting yesterday. One tech was having problems with pneumatic tubes leaking. Rats had eaten the tubes. I told him to use the ultrasonic. Everyone gave me sht about having one and some had never heard of it. Well this morning a tech was on a 260 ton chiller. He could not find the leak. He called me and asked me about my ultrasonic. I told him he could borrow it. We met at lunch and he got it. He just called me and said he had found a leak within 5 minutes and was searching for more. He’s going to order one today. The chiller is 134A my unit was 22. The ultrasonic leak detector does not care what refrigerant you are working on. If their is a leak it will find it. I have sniffers but I couldn’t tell you when they last had batteries in them. Best $500 dollars I ever spent.

Hey curious something I forgot to mention. On tube and fin coils the manufactures are rifling the tubes. They remove material for this process. It used to be if you had a leak it would be at the welded U bends. Now the potential is everywhere. I’ve found leaks other techs couldn’t find with sniffers. They were in the middle of the coil. You should try an ultrasonic. Anyway stay safe.
