    I worked on technology in the late 90's that used a 3 camera system that we mounted in a Cessna 210 to do what this drone is doing right now. We worked out 'signatures' to determine pests, fertilization, water, etc. A side benefit turned out to be 'drift'. We got involved in a big case where a spud farmer next to a barley farmer lost 1/2 his crop due to drift. We were able to map the extent, estimate yield loss, etc. 21st Century farming is amazing

    This drone system would also be good for property security, with the benefits of taking operator error out of the flying process. Pretty cool how things have progressed. Have a great day.

    Another great video. Google now thinks I am obsessed with farming videos, not really, but it is interesting to see how modern farming is carried out. What the other farming UA-camrs miss is the succinct informative commentary on what is happening, which you provide in abundance, which is great. Keep them coming.

    Is there an efficient drone service to apply spot treatment to those areas? You once showed that application in a previous video.
    I remember the payload being limited, but it has to be much less expensive than flying the real plane. Plus you can use the GPS coords from the Quantix mapping to precisely apply the treatment.

    • @Ricefarmingtv
      @Ricefarmingtv  5 років тому +6

      Hi Steve, I was looking through my retreat maps that there wasn't a field that we retreated that needed less than 20 acres of spot-spray. Not in the same area of course, but like 20 acres here and there around a 150 acre field. Maneuvering over 150 acres and hitting 20 acres is still faster with a plane. That speed lends itself to a cheaper rate too. You're right, a drone's payload is still a little too small even to treat 20 acres. Too many tank refills and battery exchanges. That is payload issue is still the limiting factor. We need the drones to hold as much as the planes. But this idea of taking specific gps coords from the Quantix is right on the button. We still need to create a software ecosystem where this data can seamlessly translate. Quantix maps, identifies weeds, you check and confirm, Quantix sends coords to plane or drone and there you go! It's still very early for all this technology...but we can really start to see how it will all integrate into a lot of precision and automation.

    Seems like a job better suited to a satellite. With enough deployed and shared (think live view google maps) you could plot/save all your property lines/limits and have this info each day, not just when you fly the field. Privacy issues, what privacy issues 😜

    • @ke6gwf
      @ke6gwf 5 років тому +1

      You can't get nearly good enough resolution from satellite to get the kind of detail that you need for this level of treatment and crop care.
      Sat is great for checking forests and overall conditions, but they only get resolutions of a few inches per pixel, rather than this kind of resolution, which since they are hundreds of miles away, isn't surprising.
      Also, since you mentioned Google Maps, most of the imagery in the Satellite mode, is actually from airplane mounted cameras. They just kept the Satellite name since that's what it used to be, and what is still used in the low resolution areas where no one has done aerial photographic surveys.
      Around populated areas in the US, they are constantly out taking updated footage whenever the weather is good and clear so they get good results.
      I have a friend who flies these surveys around California, and they basically just fly all day long doing racetrack patterns over the areas they are told to, with special stabilized cameras looking through the bottom of the plane.
      Watching how long it takes for an area to get updated after new construction happens is always interesting!

      I know. There is a $5,500 option too. It's a tough drone to swallow but lets hope as technology advances, what we're seeing now becomes a bit cheaper. Plus it's important, I think, for the farmer to consider how this tool can save him/her money. How fast will that $8,000 be returned? We're sell rice at $21 a sack (100 lbs.)...so a 380 sack yield bump over 1,200 acres returns the investment. Can I get that in a year...maybe/maybe not. What's that an extra 32 lbs. of rice per acre? Seems within reach.

    How much would neighboring farmers pay to have this done if they don't want to do it themselves?

    And because this is linked to farming that will cost about the same price as a new Mercedes car for nooooooo reasons whatsoever and probably monthly subscription for life and the rest of it to milk you dry. heh,
    i am sure i can get free/cheap apps and a normal drone to do all that for 3 times nothing.
