Yeah. SMT has a reputation of focusing much more on the combat gameplay, compared to Persona which has focused more on the social sim and time management aspects ever since Persona 3.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance! So basically the opening choice of the game is essentially a campaign selector. The left choice leads to the new story created for the Vengeance version of V. The right choice leads to the story as it was presented in the original V. Just in case anyone needed that cleared up.
Fun Fact: The entire Persona series is basically a What If? spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei. Basically what if the world didn't end on and people could summon Demons by themselves. There was even a precursor to Persona titled Shin Megami Tensei If.
Enjoy the fun and pain that comes from the SMT. Have fun with building your character, and your demon army. Quick note: Buffs and Debuffs stack twice and matter a lot.
@@aerialmacaroon6312In SMT V, that is correct. The kaja/nada system has been overhauled to be like Persona, even including the Ma- prefix skills which is the first time the mainline game has included.
I was JUST reading an ad page about SMT 5 Vengeance, getting excited about the cool premise, and then THIS POPS ON MY NOTIFICATIONS, WHAT KINDA TIMING- Anyway, I won't be seeing this playthrough due to wanting to experience it myself someday, so instead I'll watch all your Zero Escape stuff! Have fun Megami Tenseing!
I had played the SMTV that was released a couple years ago, so looking forward to seeing you guys play it. I unfortunately didn't end up finishing it because I think it was during the time when something else came out so I wasn't able to get back into it. Edit: So realized what it was, it was Endwalker for FFXIV Expansion which is why I never returned to the game, so had nothing to do with anything other than my time was all put into the MMO. I'm ready to experience the game through you guys with SMTV: Vengeance!
Excited for you to play this! I’ve played a bit of Vengeance and I think it’s very approachable for newcomers. Your experience with Persona will help but the two series are still very distinct from one another. I hope you get to enjoy the game as much as I am!
I've actually never seen a shin megami tensei game before, I just know Persona started as a spin-off of this series and they have very similar combat mechanics
According to my limited knowledge of SMT, which consists of a few hours playing Nocturne and Devil Survivors, the story is much less about characters like Persona and much more about different ideology clashing. It's a very minimalist story, in some titles the characters are kinda mouthpieces for the different philosophies. From what I hear from several fans, some people love the approach, some less, and some people like it better in some game than others. SMT IV has slightly more focus on story, from what I've heard, and SMT III is kinda the Final Fantasy 7 of the franchise, like the most recognisable and the one most people recommand you starts with, though ironicly the one that is consodered to have the best story, in terms of routes, characters and how the different ideologies are presented is not a mainline game, it's a spinoff, Devil Survivor. Anyway, that's all I know of the franchise. I wonder, which route will you choose? Are you on the law side, or are you chaos guys. Or maybe something neutral? Well we'll see, I guess. Enjoy yout first SMT experience
Actually, only SMT 3 and 5 are have minimalist story (even SNES games had more going on). SMT 4 is much more focus on the story. And if we include spinoffs that are not Persona, Digital Devil Saga is also a good example
@@pmintertek Yeah, I still think SMT II has the best story in the entire mainline series. Sadly, it's never received an official international release/translation, so.... :(
It depends. SMT Nocturne and the original release of V were pretty light on story. Other games like IV and Strange Journey have a LOT of story, maybe even more main plot than the modern Persona series because of how much of the runtime ends up being social links.
25:14 Took me up to THIS point to realise the reason this voice sounds familiar is because it's Ferdinand from Ascendance of a Bookworm. Hey there, High Priest!
So what I heard was new players should play the original story first and not take her hand. The new story was explained to me as NG+. But I don't really know. My only experience is having played some of the 3DS version of SMT IV. I enjoyed it, but that was years ago. I'm considering playing this eventually.
Basically, the Vengeance story is "the same story, but because of a few other characters who are thrown into the mix, things get derailed about 10 hours in" and the game keeps zigging instead of zagging at various points. I don't think it's a good idea for people new to the game to play Vengeance first. As lackluster as the original plot was, it's kind of needed to know what the hell is going on in Vengeance, and why... most of it matters.
I kind of disagree since Pixel Partners is mainly play for the story not the battle grinding. If they play the original, the story will just too lackluster to even recommend them to play. Hope the new one does improve to interest them enough
The game developers say new players should play Canon Of Vengeance first. Its not really NG plus, its just an alternate story with both canons being stand alone. Everyone I've heard who have played COV say it is a better experience.
If you didn’t know this game basically has the entire English and Japanese cast of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Probably cuz they’re all contracted with Nintendo and this game originally was a switch exclusive
Gonna be honest i wouldn't have never thought you guys would play a SMT game because for what I know they are really difficult, honestly i thought the next Atlus game would have been something more like 13 sentinels aegys or something like that, but hope you guys have a fun adventure with this
Yeah they are hard as hell but fun and they also made the game easier I think because in the original SMT V you couldn't heal for free, you needed to pay macca to heal yourself (the ideology behind it: nothing is free in life). Either way I think they can do it, it also helps that they played Persona because now they have some basic turn based JRPG knowledge what will make their SMT run slightly easier.
I do have to point out that Canon of creation is probably the route you should have chosen, alot of what happens in vengeance relies on knowledge of creation some things just happen off screen, but smt is less character driven than persona and more idealogical of that makes sense
Young man, there's no need to be down I said, Young man pick your self off the ground You can slay here and I'm sure you will find The strength to grind all the time
You can pass to give a turn to someone else. This is good to hit weaknesses or if you need to heal twice, etc. passing does eat up your turn if you go through your party rotation once.
Oh my gosh, I can't believe how lucky I am! I was really hoping to be able to watch someone play SMTV:V, but since a lot of let's players/streamers I follow already played the original SMTV, there wasn't a lot of interest in playing the re-release. I can't believe one of my favorite channels is doing a blind playthrough! I'm so excited for this series! 💙💙💙
one thing you may have skipped over is that you can save at any time by pressing the left arrow, this is big improment saving tons of backtracking on death as the orginal you could only save on leyline fonts and as some bosses are pretty hard you could waste alot of time and helth running back up to them, now you can save directly before a boss battle saving a few headaches
Cool. Played the original, was kinda interested in this remaster, but not enough to replay it even with the new additions. So glad to join your journey and see what I'm missing out on.
An introduction to the stuff that will happen to anyone in SMT is an old video from Sirlionhart on youtube Top 10 Shin Megami Tensei BS Moments with Sirlionhart!
@@goldtooth8278 Important story moments from Creation happen off-screen in Vengeance and give you zero indication which ones are important. You'll be confused if you try to piece it all together with only Vengeance as context.
@@jacquespaught So if i get this right, theres like two concurrent things happening in the story and creation will give context as to why the other thing happens?
@@goldtooth8278 Basically Vengeance is a version of Creation that also includes some other characters that derail the story into a different direction, but the game constantly reminds you that the Creation story is still happening to a degree. It's constantly giving you "check-ins" with where on the Creation timeline you'd be, but doesn't give nearly enough information for new players to actually understand why that stuff is happening.
This is by design as it also gives incentive for new players to play the Creation route later to get the full grasp of the setting instead of treating Vengeance as the only part of the game needed. Nothing I've seen so far is crucial enough I'd say it's necessary to understand what's going on. The idea is that you're going "off path" by choosing to take the girl's hand at the beginning but the stuff that happens regardless of the MC's involvement is still happening "over there". The game is meant to be played in multiple cycles and this kind of thing is meant to "click" when you do. Now I won't argue this is a questionable design choice (most will probably not do a Vengeance and Creation playthroughs back to back) but it's the intent

I still can't believe that despite how huge the Persona franchise is, it's still a spin-off of a much older franchise.
It’s really telling when players are more eager for a Persona protagonist to be in Smash, than an SMT protagonist.
I think it boils down to people being more into the social Sim aspects of persona compared to SMT which is why it's more popular
