Troy, you are a blessing to the world of bow hunting. Every bow hunter should see this video. You smashed it yet again with common sense and thank you for sharing. Almost every broadhead thread on earth has some ding dong saying they won’t use it again because “it doesn’t make a good blood trail”! What the broadhead CUTS is what matters because every broadhead makes a hole of some sort. The blood that comes out of said hole is the blood trail. Dull blades usually mean less cutting, heads that lose blades stop cutting. This is all simple stuff that doesn’t need to debated. Facts are facts.

True story. Shot 2 this year front shoulder both lungs with almost 700 grain arrow. Hardly no blood at all less than 40 yard trails and heard both crash. This man is spitting facts.

I think you make all kinds of sense and I've liked what you been saying for a good while now. I've been bowhunting 30+ years , gun hunted for a time but fell in love with bow and arrow. I was fed the bullshit from the beginning, it was right when mechanicals "flappers" were just starting to show up, I was using aluminum arrows and 3 blade wasp heads with my weight being around 450-500 grains, never had lost a deer 🦌but after some bad advise I got me some toddler arrows and ofcourse flappers, well I lost 2 deer in one season. Now even though I killed near 20 deer that season losing 2 was Terrible to me and ofcourse it was my fault, not anything to do with ultra light arrows and shitty broadheads. I kept using the light stuff and only took high percentage shots at broadside or quartering away deer and I did pretty good but I was constantly looking for something better and thanks to some guys like you that I began hunting with I started changing my setup, yes slowly but progressively getting heavier and now a days shooting single bevel and never looking bsck. I've never really went heavier than 500 grains but I think thats about where you start seeing all your good results and I'm sure it gets better from there I have found a killer system for me. I still shoot 100 grain heads , I just put brass inserts up front, I use PSE Black Mamba arrows and I have the ability to use weight tubes inside the arrows for serious weight if I want to, and I'm shooting Helix single bevel broadheads and love them so far. I've killed 5 with them and 5 pass throughs about 100 yards between all of them, not much tracking when you see them fall😮
All truth. Smoked and antelope with a rage hypo right above the heart ran seventy and tipped. Tried trailing blood just for practice.... and nothing for sixty-five of those yards.

Got em flying straight with Raven HD arrows and 125 single bevel Iron Wills. 22% FOC with 177 lbs kinetic energy near as I can figure. Wait till the wife sees the card bill this month.

I learned what you are demonstrating with the boards first hand many years ago with a 150# or so sow. I was on the ground and hit her dead broadside through both arm pits. Entry and exit were both blocked by the meat of the front legs while it ran. I only had a few drops where I shot her and then zero blood after that. Luckily, it was wallowing in the wet mud just before I shot. I had to track dirty water droplets instead of blood. She only made it about 60 yds and died. Had I not been in the middle of a button wood swamp I would have seen it fall. Had she run much further I don't think I would have found her given how thick the area was.
Not bow shots, but had 2 deer double lunged one with a 20 gauge slug and one with a .50 cal muzzle loader, neither left a trackable blood trail. Both deer where recovered, the one taken with the 20 gauge we back trailed a very short blood trail from where we found it but only about 10 yards and then nothing. Much easier when you watch them fall. Keep up the great content, working towarda adult arrows just have to get the process started.
I'm convinced your spot on. Been hunting 30+ years and tracked a bunch of deer. Anyone who has tracked a deer has seen blood trails that stop and start at distances we can't explain. Your explanation of a shoulder hit makes it clear we can not expect blood to pour out continuously. I believe we need grown up arrows and broad heads based on your research. Since many of us are getting old, can you put out a video of bolts and broad heads for those of us using crossbows? I'm not convinced we're getting the best advice from manufacturers. Color of blood is more important than quantity, even though a painted forrest is more exciting. And just cause it's dripping on the ground doesn't mean it's not gushing inside.

Great stuff! Plus people forget about the pesky membrane that lines the entire chest cavity…which likes to slide right over the hole as well. That’s where 2 holes are always better than 1 philosophy comes into play. Happy hunting!
Great example and oh so timely. I arrowed a Mn whitetail doe two night ago. Pass thru with 125 G5s. I watched the deer die about 30 yards from impact. With snow on the ground I was kinda shocked by the lack of blood. I made the shot you are talking about in this video, Took out both lungs. Thanks for the explanation this makes total sense! Ps are we related, I’m slightly nuts as well🤪
Shot a Texas hill country whitetail with 30-06, both lungs and heart. He ran about 15 yards into a cedar break and was the devil to find as there was almost no blood. Keep up the good info, next season I will be bow hunting and what you are saying makes a lot of sense to me and looking forward to putting it to use.

I am kind of new to bow hunting (on my 3rd season of seriously bow hunting) and there are so many things that you bring up that I haven't thought of on my own but make so much sense when you explain it. Thanks for being honest! I've learned a lot from your videos this hunting season. I now sharpen my own fixed blade broad heads and they performed much better than any flapper I used to shoot and I did not have to blood trail my deer.
I totally agree on the 3D targets being off on good arrow placement, and agree on how your arrow hole can shut on/off. Another problem is with shots being to high and blood stays in the chest cavity.
Great simplification of a real-world scenario. I hit a buck at 15 yards with a 20 gauge slug who ran maybe 30 yards & never dropped a speck of blood. You can’t predict how much fluid is going to leak from the hole you’re creating in your target bc anything can happen.
I found many many moons ago, that the hide of the animual can stop almost all blood from comming out to make a blood trail. I shot a deer that was a "perfect shot" center of the lungs, arrow went stright through plenty of bubbly blood on the arrow, some at the scene. However that was the only blood that leaked out of the deer. it went about 30-40 yards with no trail whatsoever. The reason for this was at full draw, the deer decided to chew on the other side of its behind ( head hiden by the body) I heald for a long time waiting and finilly released it. perfect with no bloob. I got the dog out of the car and found it. When skining it I found that both the entrence and exit were covered by the hide and fat because of the twisting of the deers body at the time of the shot. Never do that again.
I now myself place the shot when the front leg goes forward and I have been very successful doing this,I don’t shoot through the shoulder any more,but yes it does happen every once in a while.Good video again Troy
I have learned from watching your content and I appreciate it. I have learned a lot from watching your video on broad head sharpness. I never reused broad head blades but I’ve always just took them out of the package and used them not giving it a second thought. Now I sharpen the brand new blades before I use them. I have noticed a huge difference. However, I will always use my mechanicals micro diameter light arrows. Maybe if I ever get the opportunity to chase elk or pigs maybe I’ll change my arrow set up and broadhead, but my set up doesn’t fail if I do my job.
I have only taken 1 Deer with a bow. The shot was a double lung pass through at about 8 yds, a hoof print from disturbed leaves at 15 yrds. The first blood was discovered at 30 yrds. The Deer was down at 40 yrds.
I figured this was common knowledge, along with lack of exit wounds decreasing blood trails, and bedded wounded deer picking up leaf litter/dirt blocking the blood flow.

I hunt Minnesota whitetails they weight roughly 200 to 250 pounds i was using flappers weight of arrow was low 400 grains last year I shot 2 deer perfect double lung shots both went over 1 mile later before we tracked them down and shot them again so i decided to change my setup to 550 grain made a huge difference shot a 185 pound doe went 40 yards and die crazy blood trail keep doing what your are doing i am convinced about the ashby foundation
Not just bow shots. I shot a buck with my carcano through the shoulder blade and he didnt leave a drop of blood for 30 yards, when it started coming out his nose. But finding blood then was moot because he was dead two steps from first blood.
This is true even with shotgun slugs. 2 bucks this year, we recovered both by the way, each went 50 and 90 yards respectively before the blood trail started. Both shoulder shots.
Makes sense. You kind of remind me of a smartass I know (me) only on thousand mile an hour juice, us old guys got to spread the knowledge one way or another.
Equipment does matter, no doubt. You need a real broadhead for starters, a real arrow with plenty of weight for momentum,and ofcourse FOC.Frankly I blast thru boar hogs shoulders being the heart is tucked behind them in most instances. I shoot 80 pounds PSE EVL 32 with a 550 grain arrow. Since I changed up to a COC and heavy arrow, i've gotten great results. Boar hogs simply don't give the best blood trails like a sow because the shield is wet, and begins to seal the wound. But you'll do enough damage and enough blood to find your animal. A sow, is like killing a deer practically. They tumble over within eyesight. Nothing better than crashing shoulder with a 80 pound bow that rips. The bone smashing sound is ridiculous and the boars sometimes can't run and tumble and fall when you break both shoulders. Great info here. If you don't have enough ponies in your rig, you gotta learn shot placement that fits your rig.
I'd sum it up this way... if you miss your mark and hit back/guts you want large diameter broadheads. If you miss your mark & hit forward/bone you want heavy arrows & single bevel. You choose.....
Been shooting heavy arrows for 2 years now. Killed 2 deer and didn't need a blood trail. Saw them fall over. Troy this would have been a good video for Dilbert to make an appearance!
@@RanchFairy yes sir! I switched to the non-serated Hornets this season via your recomendation and have had two kills. Slammed both in the shoulder. My last shot did damage to the front leg bone and caused it to shatter, the critter fell over, went through one rib, heart and lodged itself in ribs on the other side. I can only imagine the damage an iron will or tuffhead would do!! Thanks for everything you do Troy!!
I agree with you Mr. ranch fairy .It’s my belief that people who are in the market for Broadhead gravitate to mechanicals because they look so cool. Who cares how cool the mechanicals look. A fixed broadhead has a better chance of going through the animal without deflection this is fact. Blood trails are overrated. Fix broad heads Pass-throughs have less resistance then mechanicals. Fixed blades make a better Cut because the Broadhead is not shifting like a mechanical does. It’s a no brainer.
Shot 1 doe with my bow this year. Left and right was perfect but she ducked me pretty good and I broke her back shooting a 28 inch 400 spine with a 100 gr mechanical at 65 1/2 lbs of draw. Half of my arrow went through her. She was about 100 lbs (Florida deer) and I wasn't happy. I'm going back to a 550 spine and at least 125gr magnus stinger. That should be just fine for 80-150 lb whitetail
Heavy arrows work! I've shot multiple deer now and had very little blood but I watched where they went and they died where I lady saw them go. Yes shot placement helps! I've had to track deer on one lung it's no fun. Since switching to a heavy arrow and the Magnus set razor they don't go far
The people that say they never miss have obviously never been hanging off a tree for 6 hours in 20 degree weather having to piss so bad that their back teeth are floating. Just throwin that out there

A 590gr Apollo 4 feather fletched 125gr magnus killer bee a 20yd full frontal shot from 15ft with a exit through the back of the left shoulder as I watched his direction of travel about 20yds from the shot I seen a bunch of leaves fall from a small tree not a drop of blood on the trail he took nor was there any blood anywhere but found him 20yds from the shot laying against the small tree he crashed into .. I am definitely a believer in RF God Bless Americans
Years ago I had a bolt stick into my leg on the side of the calf muscle. It was impossible to clean out the wound because all the different muscles moved at different angles and rates. It was extremely difficult to get everything lined up to get a hole clear down. Not only does the shoulder move but various muscles work slightly differently from each other and move at different rates. I wonder how much of the blood we find from certain shots is actually blood from cutting veins and arteries in the muscle itself and not even from the chest cavity.
When you track you can tell shoulder blood splatter vs arterial squirting vs coughing droplets. In my experience most blood in trails is shoulder blood. If they fall it really gushes from the holes though.

I shot an elk and 2 deer with the same 2 blade broadhead and they didnt go more than 100 yards total and didn't have crazy blood but they didnt know what happened and didnt run. Had one other one with massive 2 blade that didn't go far either but didnt die fast enough before i bumped him. Ran another 200 yards and end up dieing found the next day. Wasn't much for blood with that one. Took a while to find.
Shot a big buck this year went through the meat of both front shoulders took a chunk out of the bone that connects to the shoulder split a rib (using single bevels) and took out the aortic vessels that come out of the heart and run down the front legs went 40 or 50 yards and tipped over he couldn't even run he just staggered the whole way like to so a speed setup do that! Fear Of Change. Real change vs. fake change. I'm not from out west so I'm not setup for the ground. Big advantage since concealment in a 🌳 is going to produce more positive results with less blown hunts. How about changing to a system? 1. Hunt closer to game. A single animal @ 10-15 yards offers much more than seeing like 7 deer a sit that r all 50-75 yards away. A bow setup that @ close range ( which longer bowhunting seasons afford u for more opportunities) to shoot @ multiple angles. When the game is close u simply ready yourself for 3 spots & u don't have to bellow @ the animal like a cow looking for it's calf. 2. A centershot bow with stout arrows & broadheads built with integrity will get u there & u don't even need a 90 or 60 day RF Warning. God forbid a 30 day warning which is nothing but a stay of execution from the Governor 🚫. Shooting 3D targets b4 season helps with this setup quite a bit. Put ZERO targets broadside. The FOC setup shows u where your exit hole is when your tip is sticking outside the target. Your brain will do the rest to adjust when it comes to your aiming point. Coincidentally a quartering shot from above gives u the angle that u need to have your arrow while it has its maximum power & momentum to enter above the top of the dreaded femur & punch through meat & cartilage to exit tight behind the opposite front shoulder low. U won't need much power for the exit there compared to a quartering away shot where u r expecting possibly too much of your setup. Like RF said in this video. Bloodtrailing should not be an issue unless u r 1 that adheres & then panics to a RF 30 day warning 😴.

Same! Last 3 deer towards the end of this season I changed shot placement and they went 25yds, 35yds and 40yds.
Unfortunately, I still shoot flappers and twizzlers as I've not made that change yet. It's on my list.

I got the dog out of the car and found it. When skining it I found that both the entrence and exit were covered by the hide and fat because of the twisting of the deers body at the time of the shot. Never do that again.

Just standing around or on the move? Avoiding the shoulder altogether seems the best way to me. Not possible in many circumstances I know.
I have learned from watching your content and I appreciate it. I have learned a lot from watching your video on broad head sharpness. I never reused broad head blades but I’ve always just took them out of the package and used them not giving it a second thought. Now I sharpen the brand new blades before I use them. I have noticed a huge difference. However, I will always use my mechanicals micro diameter light arrows. Maybe if I ever get the opportunity to chase elk or pigs maybe I’ll change my arrow set up and broadhead, but my set up doesn’t fail if I do my job.

I have only taken 1 Deer with a bow. The shot was a double lung pass through at about 8 yds, a hoof print from disturbed leaves at 15 yrds. The first blood was discovered at 30 yrds. The Deer was down at 40 yrds.
I figured this was common knowledge, along with lack of exit wounds decreasing blood trails, and bedded wounded deer picking up leaf litter/dirt blocking the blood flow.

He likes it for Whitetail (550-600gr) . I'd add: 15-20+% FOC.

I hunt Minnesota whitetails they weight roughly 200 to 250 pounds i was using flappers weight of arrow was low 400 grains last year I shot 2 deer perfect double lung shots both went over 1 mile later before we tracked them down and shot them again so i decided to change my setup to 550 grain made a huge difference shot a 185 pound doe went 40 yards and die crazy blood trail keep doing what your are doing i am convinced about the ashby foundation

Not just bow shots. I shot a buck with my carcano through the shoulder blade and he didnt leave a drop of blood for 30 yards, when it started coming out his nose. But finding blood then was moot because he was dead two steps from first blood.
This is true even with shotgun slugs. 2 bucks this year, we recovered both by the way, each went 50 and 90 yards respectively before the blood trail started. Both shoulder shots.
Makes sense. You kind of remind me of a smartass I know (me) only on thousand mile an hour juice, us old guys got to spread the knowledge one way or another.

Equipment does matter, no doubt. You need a real broadhead for starters, a real arrow with plenty of weight for momentum,and ofcourse FOC.Frankly I blast thru boar hogs shoulders being the heart is tucked behind them in most instances. I shoot 80 pounds PSE EVL 32 with a 550 grain arrow. Since I changed up to a COC and heavy arrow, i've gotten great results. Boar hogs simply don't give the best blood trails like a sow because the shield is wet, and begins to seal the wound. But you'll do enough damage and enough blood to find your animal. A sow, is like killing a deer practically. They tumble over within eyesight. Nothing better than crashing shoulder with a 80 pound bow that rips. The bone smashing sound is ridiculous and the boars sometimes can't run and tumble and fall when you break both shoulders. Great info here. If you don't have enough ponies in your rig, you gotta learn shot placement that fits your rig.

I'd sum it up this way... if you miss your mark and hit back/guts you want large diameter broadheads. If you miss your mark & hit forward/bone you want heavy arrows & single bevel.

@@RanchFairy yes sir! I switched to the non-serated Hornets this season via your recomendation and have had two kills. Slammed both in the shoulder. My last shot did damage to the front leg bone and caused it to shatter, the critter fell over, went through one rib, heart and lodged itself in ribs on the other side. I can only imagine the damage an iron will or tuffhead would do!! Thanks for everything you do Troy!!

I agree with you Mr. ranch fairy .It’s my belief that people who are in the market for Broadhead gravitate to mechanicals because they look so cool. Who cares how cool the mechanicals look. A fixed broadhead has a better chance of going through the animal without deflection this is fact.
Blood trails are overrated.
Fix broad heads Pass-throughs have less resistance then mechanicals. Fixed blades make a better Cut because the Broadhead is not shifting like a mechanical does.
It’s a no brainer.

Shot 1 doe with my bow this year. Left and right was perfect but she ducked me pretty good and I broke her back shooting a 28 inch 400 spine with a 100 gr mechanical at 65 1/2 lbs of draw. Half of my arrow went through her. She was about 100 lbs (Florida deer) and I wasn't happy. I'm going back to a 550 spine and at least 125gr magnus stinger. That should be just fine for 80-150 lb whitetail

Heavy arrows work! I've shot multiple deer now and had very little blood but I watched where they went and they died where I lady saw them go. Yes shot placement helps! I've had to track deer on one lung it's no fun. Since switching to a heavy arrow and the Magnus set razor they don't go far

A 590gr Apollo 4 feather fletched 125gr magnus killer bee a 20yd full frontal shot from 15ft with a exit through the back of the left shoulder as I watched his direction of travel about 20yds from the shot I seen a bunch of leaves fall from a small tree not a drop of blood on the trail he took nor was there any blood anywhere but found him 20yds from the shot laying against the small tree he crashed into .. I am definitely a believer in RF God Bless Americans

Years ago I had a bolt stick into my leg on the side of the calf muscle. It was impossible to clean out the wound because all the different muscles moved at different angles and rates. It was extremely difficult to get everything lined up to get a hole clear down. Not only does the shoulder move but various muscles work slightly differently from each other and move at different rates. I wonder how much of the blood we find from certain shots is actually blood from cutting veins and arteries in the muscle itself and not even from the chest cavity.

When you track you can tell shoulder blood splatter vs arterial squirting vs coughing droplets. In my experience most blood in trails is shoulder blood. If they fall it really gushes from the holes though.

I shot an elk and 2 deer with the same 2 blade broadhead and they didnt go more than 100 yards total and didn't have crazy blood but they didnt know what happened and didnt run. Had one other one with massive 2 blade that didn't go far either but didnt die fast enough before i bumped him. Ran another 200 yards and end up dieing found the next day. Wasn't much for blood with that one. Took a while to find.
For low light shooting, have you thought about a removable housing for the pins to let more light in? I already shoot peepless because of you.

Shot a big buck this year went through the meat of both front shoulders took a chunk out of the bone that connects to the shoulder split a rib (using single bevels) and took out the aortic vessels that come out of the heart and run down the front legs went 40 or 50 yards and tipped over he couldn't even run he just staggered the whole way like to so a speed setup do that! Fear Of Change. Real change vs. fake change. I'm not from out west so I'm not setup for the ground. Big advantage since concealment in a 🌳 is going to produce more positive results with less blown hunts. How about changing to a system? 1. Hunt closer to game. A single animal @ 10-15 yards offers much more than seeing like 7 deer a sit that r all 50-75 yards away. A bow setup that @ close range ( which longer bowhunting seasons afford u for more opportunities) to shoot @ multiple angles. When the game is close u simply ready yourself for 3 spots & u don't have to bellow @ the animal like a cow looking for it's calf. 2. A centershot bow with stout arrows & broadheads built with integrity will get u there & u don't even need a 90 or 60 day RF Warning. God forbid a 30 day warning which is nothing but a stay of execution from the Governor 🚫.
Shooting 3D targets b4 season helps with this setup quite a bit. Put ZERO targets broadside. The FOC setup shows u where your exit hole is when your tip is sticking outside the target. Your brain will do the rest to adjust when it comes to your aiming point. Coincidentally a quartering shot from above gives u the angle that u need to have your arrow while it has its maximum power & momentum to enter above the top of the dreaded femur & punch through meat & cartilage to exit tight behind the opposite front shoulder low. U won't need much power for the exit there compared to a quartering away shot where u r expecting possibly too much of your setup. Like RF said in this video. Bloodtrailing should not be an issue unless u r 1 that adheres & then panics to a RF 30 day warning 😴.
