My husband is originally from the Chicago area, but I’m from Archer City. He told me once he’s never been hotter, and also, never been colder than in Archer City, Texas. Between heat, cold, drought, and torrential rain it’s just an extreme climate there. But what can shock me most is the biting cold on a clear, fine-looking day. That paradox is even in the film.
I can vouch for the authenticity that The Last Picture Show...presents.. That movie captures the feeling, the austerity, the undercurrent sadness of a changing world. I appreciate so much that Mr Abernathy is making the effort to preserve. Fortunately the Last Picture show in Stamford Texas has been saved ...its been restored...its the show that kids went to in the same era that they did in the 1951 era Last Picture Show.
Thank you for saving this landmark of American cinema. The Last Picture Show is a National Treasure and so is The Royal. Thank you Abbey and all those who preserved this icon site. I hope to see it before I go,
I applaud you sir, for referbishing a part of your local history that would have been lost forever hadn't you stepped in and rescued it from what would have been Oblivion, congradulations on a job well done!
I used to live out at lake kikapoo. Larry McMurtry is the best writer I have ever read. As is the last picture show I wish I was there to help you. Thanks brother
I'm from NE Oklahoma. I was one year old when the last picture show came out. I'm heading to Archer City next week because of the impact it had on me. My grandfather who was from Hominy, OK was friends with Ben Johnson who was from Pawhuska, OK. I've been looking forward to this trip for many years. This Is a pilgrimage for me in a sense. I call it a national icon.
I walked into the Royal theater 7 years ago not knowing this story. Thank you very much.

I've visited twice and I appreciate it a heck of a LOT!

What year was this shown? Is this current?
It was shown in 2000, say so in the description
Nothing changes the memories from our youth. Alas, too many of them are not revived like this old burned out movie theater.
Who said true grit is dead?
Great reason for texans to stay in Texas....
106? Geez....that's hot!!! Lol
Really, try Big Bend in August or Houston (with that humidity) anytime from Late May to early Sept.
@@cameraman655 Yup. That's Texas for you. I live here too. It's super hot during the summer months for sure!

Landmark? Maybe? National icon? Let's not get carried away.
