- I do not own the copyrights to any of this. I know many other fans missed the premiere of Daniel Johns new song 'Aerial Love' so I recored it on my phone and put it on youtube. I was nervous as hell to watch this. I mean, Dan hasn't been on stage for...what, like 5 years or so? And even then, it was just a few shows. It's been like 7 years since he's actually _released music_. I mean, we haven't really seen Dan on a stage or putting out music in forever.
Also, given how long it's been, I think part of it is that people are just _so not used_ to hearing Dan again. This new single of his, Aerial Love, is...very very average imo. *_But_*...he's _already proven countless times_ that he's a creative genius. If anything, his best work by far, imo, is Diorama, through Dissos, into Young Modern. All 3 of those albums are genius...and the previous 3 are incredible in their own way as well.
*_As long as he's truly passionate, creative, unique, and willing to try new things_*, I'll listen to whatever it is. Who knows...maybe the album will suck and he'll really have to re-think things, and maybe _try harder_ next time.
Or...the single is just radio-fodder(sadly) and not even very good at that; but the album itself is experimental and trippy and creative and eccentric and idiosyncratic and eclectic and everything I've come to love about his songwriting. I _really_ hope that's how it ends up. I can't imagine Dan releasing something he wasn't utterly proud of. He is a perfectionist(this is a good thing imo) after all. Crossing my fingers....
I'm more than happy if Dan wants to explore pop music; hell much of Silverchair and the Dissos was pure pop perfection. Remember...the Beatles were pop. As was Prince, REM, the Beach Boys, Nirvana, and even My Bloody Valentine....when you examine MBV's songs closely, it's the most gorgeous dream *_pop_* ever. It's not a dirty word. MOST of the best artists made *pop music*.
So, if he wants to explore that, or EDM, or reggae, or jazz fusion, or metal, or the blues, or whatever...I'm ALL for it. As long as he's still as passionate, interested, curious, and adventurous about music and songwriting as he's always been...it'll be amazing.
