  • Well guys and gals, we finally made an effort to get out to Olympic National Park to catch a Steelhead in the famed Hoh River! Unfortunately for us, the fishing was trashed overnight by a rain storm that was unrelenting so we only fished for one half day instead of three. I will be back for another shot at these beautiful Washington Steelhead soon but for now enjoy this video of us being wet and cold! Thank you for watching and be sure to check out my new merch in the link below to help support the channel!

the only thing worse than driving 3 hours is watching a fishing video for 6 minutes before we even see the river.

The Hoh is a glacial fed river, and it takes days and days of clear cold weather to bring it into shape after a rain event. When all other rivers are low and gin clear, the Hoh, and Queets are looking good.

good on you for braving the elements. The lovely Hoh and Queets and even the Calawah are usually the first to blow out. The sol duc will give you about six hours after a storm, is usually the last to blow out and the first to come in.

Storms up there can stick within the mountains and end up dumping more water into the area. Now that you have experienced the event, have alternate plan on other streams, with more rain go smaller streams/rivers just incase as an alternative there are a few smaller rivers up in the peninsula. Some of theses can be fishable in higher conditions. your larger rivers like the Hoh tend to blow out more rapidly with heavier rains. Tough conditions in any event. I think most who fish rivers have been there in your situation, stay positive and keep after it, eventually your hard work and efforts will pay off.

Unfortunately we were just not prepared at all for the amount of rain that came! Next time there will be better planning involved but its looking like that'll have to be next season because ive moved from Washington to Colorado now. Appreciate you watching and leaving the comment, I figured the video would be a cool learning experience for others about how quickly conditions change in the rainforest!

Here’s a very helpful tip. If the water is high and you’ve drove 3 hours and don’t want to waste the trip, TRY BOBBER DOGGIN! watch some videos on it. I had to be the easiest method on the peninsula. And very productive. If water is fast. Use more weight. If the water is slow. Use less

I recently took 3 separate trips to the Hoh in the beginning of January, luckily I didn't experience that sort of rain, but have on many other PNW rivers both on the OP as well as other places. It is a beautiful, majestic, and frightening river, as flows can go from 1,000 cfs to over 20,000 cfs seemingly instantaneously ( It is in a rain forest), so don't get too down. I haven't caught a steelhead on the swing there yet, but as I am currently out of the country for the next six months, I won't be able to return anytime soon. But I will be back to hopefully catch my first wild OP steelhead sometime soon. Good luck and tight lines! Keep up the great videos, love seeing content creators in the PNW.

Its amazing just how quickly a river goes from Steelhead Green to trashed!! Thank you though, I dont plan on giving up anytime soon. I need to get a steelhead somewhere in Washington before I move though or im going to feel as though I really missed a great opportunity. Hopefully you get yours soon too once you return! Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment.

@@LifeOutdoors it was absolutely beautiful!!! I'm from Colorado so everything is completely different to anything I'm used to! I loved trying something new and seeing such a beautiful place! The sad part is getting to the PNW I already planned a bunch of rivers along the 101 leading down to the hoh river.... Planned everything out and as soon as I got there one by one day by day getting closer to the rivers they each started to close them down. Ended up only being able to fish the hoh out of the 7-8 rivers I had planned out.

    • @LifeOutdoors

Thats how trips go out here! You plan and plan then the rain says not this time. I lived in Colorado for a couple years and it was much easier planning long trips out that way, a little more predictable depending on the time of year.

That's the way it goes. I've been rained out many times when I lived out there which was a trip from B'Ham for me which required a ferry trip at Keystone and it was expense in gas money as well. I'm guessing you started out in the South Sound area (Olympia).

@@LifeOutdoors Looking at your site I see that you are from NE Ohio like me originally. I'm from Akron but have been in the Marquette area in the U.P. of Michigan since 1978, but visit my high school buddies in Akron once a year. I had originally thought that you were Washingtonians, which is why I referred to Bellingham, WA as B'Ham. I will be returning to Washington state this fall for an extended stay (maybe a couple of years). If you guys come up here this spring I'll take you coho jack fishing on Lake Superior.

@@LifeOutdoors Yeah, but I haven't lived there since '73. I lived in B'Ham the last half of '87, 88 and all of 1989. I took fisheries classes at Bellingham Vo-Tech. I intend to be moving back there this fall, or at the very latest next spring. Winters are just too long and cold here in the U.P. for an old fart like me. Although I can't see myself settling permanently in B'Ham, but I could see another two year stay. I may also end up in either SW Washington near Vancouver, or somewhere in Eastern WA near Pateras. The fact of the matter is fishing pretty much stinks around B'Ham, but not so bad in SW or Eastern WA depending on what species you are targeting. If I miss the U.P. too much, I'll just move back. You can PM me thru FB if you want.
