I carve a lot of found wood, carry a small folding saw in my truck. Fun carving, I will carve a few of these while waiting for my grandson to get out of karate, they don’t want to many people inside because of Covid so I wait. This video will help thank you!

I'm brand new in my whittling journey, only been carving for a few months, but its so exciting that the first video I watch on carving is done on willow wood. There was a massive willow tree in the town I grew up in that just recently was struck by lightning, splitting it in half and dropping a huge mess of branches right off the side of the road. Well I've been carving long enough to know not to pass up free wood, and its especially nice because now I have a little piece of a tree that was already old when I was very young. I carved a little mushketeer (anthropomorphic mushroom guy who's wielding a branch like a sword) and then a great horned owl that was blessed with some really interesting grays and browns running through it. I hope to learn a lot from you!!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Something that's simple to do to get your feet wet but still look like something when you're done.
It is always good to see someone share their knowledge of whatever they do. I have always said that the knowledge I have can never be taken away from me But by me sharing that knowledge and possibly have someone a bit better is always good. Don't hoard your knowledge , share it and help someone become better at whatever that task is.

very cool video.. seems 99% of whittling and carving videos on youtube involve power tools and dremels. I like to do things like this on the go. while out on a walking trail and what not. thank you for the inspiration

went out into the woods earlier to walk off some stress, found a really cool stick and brought it home. then i remembered why i bought that folding knife years ago and started whittling off the bark. now im in bed about to turn in and imagining all the coffee, olive oil, and beeswax scented old spirits i'll be gifting to friends from now on. your tip about observing people and imitating their lines hit like an epiphany, too. thanks for the lovely video (and for not using any other tools but the knife). i'll be coming back to your channel once i got the hang of the old guy

A trick from model making that might be worth trying - add some washing up liquid to the coffee, it's a surfactant so will break down the surface tension so it will run off the raised edges and lie more in the recesses instead. It doesn't take a lot, just a little squirt then give it a stir. You can also use alcohol, most model makers use IPA as a surfactant when making washes, but any detergent will also work and it's cheaper. I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have here though since you're putting it on a porous surface so it might just soak in rather than run off, but it can't hurt to try
Oh and another trick to seal it - PVA glue with lots of water and a little of your surfactant of choice then put it in a spray bottle and mist it, because it's been watered down it dries to a clear, very thin but plasticky skin, if you do it right you can barely tell it's there but it's pretty effective at sealing everything in and protecting it, and it gives a more natural look than varnishes

Great job. They look very nice. I make these a little bit bigger about 3in.Wx 8inL and I hang them from trees in the woods as I'm hiking or bushwhacking to kind of spread the spirit plus I can imagine the look on peoples faces when they happen to lookup and see one hanging from a bush or tree.

Very cool video. My very first carving was with an X-acto knife in a piece of Manzanita. It was a wood spirit, but I actually carved the whole body, including the legs and feet. I gave it to my Uncle who was an Art professor at the time. Manzanita is a very hard wood from the hills of California and Nevada. Subscribed.
Been woodworking for awhile, stumbled on your channel and for the first time in a while I was wow'd and inspired to try something completely new. I had been thinking about making some walking sticks and if I can incorporate something like this that would be awesome. New subscriber as of today!

When I'm carving I always have a bottle of super glue handy, quicker and cheaper than a trip to the ER for stitches. 🥴
Styptic pencil's good too. Stops the bleeding pretty quickly. 👍
Lol stitches... try some pine or spruce resin...have it right beside your work station. Pretty wicked cool stuff... smear some in a fresh cut, it wont bleed much and it will begin healing it as well as cleaning it from bacteria, fungi, viruses etc. I'm a new carver but also got into the natural healing of plants and saved a lot of blood loss because i did lol. Haha 1st time with a new stihl limb saw it skipped and tore a good bit out of my hand... it was nasty, but not deep. I also pack my bandage with this stuff. A salve is what i do.

I was doing this with a dull knife,and I cut myself badly. No crocheting for me for a week or two. Make sure you wear carving gloves and have a sharp knife.

Mine are nice and cheap from the local hardware shop, just make sure they have a high level of cut resistance and I make sure mine are as skin tight as possible so I can still have good control. 👍

They're from my local hardware store, the brand name is Blackrock. Whatever you look for just be sure they are comfy, tight and with a high cut resistance. Hope this helps!

Where did you buy the Black Rock carving gloves, please? They look so comfortable. I checked Black Rock website, but none looked like yours.
Mine are from my local hardware store, you could also try trade stores. If you can't find them, have a chat with someone in store they may be able to order some in for you, if not they could order in a selection for you to try, some suppliers are happy to send samples if it means they get sales.
Thanks for your video. I tried the coffee stain and it looked really nice when it was wet. But when it dried, the color was gone. Any idea what went wrong?
Could try a thicker coffee mix (ie less water more grounds) or ive sometimes applied multiple coats until I'm happy with the finsh

I would really like to know what kind of wood you're using. I'm having trouble finding wood soft enough that it's easy to cut but hard enough that it doesn't crumble.
Most woods I use are sycamore, bay or willow as that's what I have access to. Keeping it soft is really down to keeping it green (like it's just been cut) if your wood feels a bit hard and it's looking dry, soak it underwater for a few hours. I keep all my wood submerged in water until I need it.
@@SpoonsandSpirits Ok thank you. I can try to get some of those woods. I have pine and maple and maple just doesn't work well for me. I soak my wood for about a day before I use it, but I will try using green wood too.

Not really yet, most fruits are good to carve. Recently I have been enjoying Bay, not a fruit I know but very nice to carve.

God instructs us not to make any images of anything in the heavens above, the earth beneath or the waters.... this is idolatry in God's eyes... sorry but... everything is permissible but not all things are beneficial== 1 Corinthians 10:23
Please note the context of the verses addressing idols. They pertain to creating figures for worship, which is idolatry. God has no problem with creating artwork- keep in mind the instructions for building the Ark of The Covenant and the Bronze Snake. God did not intend these objects to be worshipped, but He clearly did not object to us creating representations of living beings if He actually told the Israelites to do so. It becomes idolatry when we let artwork take the place of God- either by actually assigning it deity or even by allowing it to become a bigger part of our lives than God is. Both of these approaches would be idol worship. Also the Corinthians passage you noted is referencing the obsolete Jewish food laws. The passage does not mean that literally everything is permissible. Thanks to Jesus and His fulfillment of the Jewish law, those regulations and sacrifices are now not necessary, but the 10 Commandments still hold. The laws regarding the worship of objects are never revoked. So if you believe that a woodcarving is idolatry, then of course don't participate, but also do not say it is permissible. You can eat pork, but Paul never said worshipping another god out of courtesy to others was excusable.
