"If you can be judicious on the throttle" means anything can be a beginner's bike.
Weight, nimble handling, price, and under 60hp should be the top priorities. Half this list should be second bikes.
Hey, my first bike is an 81 xs1100. Back in the day it was a monster, but 40 years later... Well, it's more like a Rebel 1100 if it tries really hard. I guess it depends on environment, age, size, etc....

I feel like a new rider having previous experience with Manual Transmissions is a huge help with power/speed modulation…..having previous experience with MC Bikes also would give you a solid wrist for Steady Throttle Control in varying surface conditions.

Well now we know why spite is the way he is... He was forced to own an ugly street 750 when he wanted a nice scout 60... And everything went downhill from that point onwards... He had the potential to be an actual motorcyclist but he was forced into the harley simp lifestyle... Tragic tragic 😢.

Honestly, the best beginner bike is the one that fits you, your budget, your style, and your maturity. My first bike, which I got just in July, is a 2005 Honda VTX 1300 C. Wasn't my first choice (I wanted a Vulcan S), but it's been a great bike, and as long as I respect the torque in lower gears, it's fine. (1000+ cc is very different on a cruiser than on a sport bike.) As for size, I am 6'5", so that big bike doesn't feel big to me.
I'd also recommend getting a bike that can do highway speeds without struggling. So, that means getting a bike with at least 500 cc.
I 10000% agree with everything you said. My only experience on a bike was the 2 days at the MSF course. I wanted a honda rebel but the 500 despite being highway capable didnt doesnt have much power past 75mph and i feel like you might need more to get out of a bad situation at those speeds. Plus you grow out if it quick. I got a 1100 as my first bike and in lower power modes its actually easier to ride then the old beat up 300s they had us on in class. Maturity level 100% plays a role. And ive been on a 650cc street bike and thats a way different beast then my rebel 1100

I'm 55 years old but my Z900RS brings out the inner squid. Bikes make me feel young, act young: that's why I ride.

I finally passed my driver's licence. On A rebel 1100!!!! I love it as my first and probably only bike I will ever own. The way it rides is perfect for me, as of right now. I got the automatic version (DCT), thinking it would save me some troubles. But in the mountains I switch to automatic and you lose the ability to use the clutch during slower maneuvers. So... It's a challange to say the least. But once you get used to it... And Letting the engine purrrrr a bit.... It's a fine beast.

I’m in college and it’s my first bike. I got it for $3,400 with only 720 miles; it’s been an amazing introduction into my new favorite way to travel!
My 1st bike was a used 1973 BMW R60/5 that I bought in 1980. That was a 4 speed, 40hp bike with low compression base gaskets installed cuz no lead gas. I wore it out covering about 20 states. You don't need huge bike to enjoy riding.
I started on a Honda CTX700n. Has a decent seat height for anyone over 5’ 6” and it doesn’t sound weird like the Vulcan S since it has a 270 degree parallel twin. It’s basically the new rebel but made back when nobody wanted it.
Started on a Vulcan 800 Classic. Perfect bike to learn on for a full grown man. Big and bad, but easy to handle. love this bike.

As someone who started on an HD 48 can confirm the 1200 sounds intimidating at first but was easy to manage!
I started on a Harley Softail. It was nice. Super comfortable and easy to control. Upgraded to my Road King Special the day it came out though. Needed the touring frame for my cross country weekend adventures. 😅
Hard disagree on the S40.
Where I live,most people getting a cruiser as a first bike buy something like a Yamaha Virago 125 or 250, Honda Rebel 125 or 250, Suzuki Marauder GZ125 or GZ250, etc. (I started on an Aprilia Red Rose Classic,also a little beginner bike). The bikes on this list are all midweight bikes,I guess you can start on them,but they would actually be better as a second bike,after getting some experience on something smaller.
My missus had a Virago 250 for her first bike. Nice little bike which was easy to handle but really gutless. Good enough for her starting out though.
I am the proud owner of a Marauder 250 and man, I love my little bike! It's low on power, but a nimble featherweight and outside of the highway it's capable to keep up with bigger bikes with no problem whatsoever.
Where you live people are probably tiny and poorly fed I'm guessing. 125cc is laughable and dangerous in a country with real roads and traffic.
@@Hendoneesia You're guessing wrong. Where I live,people are on average 180-185 cm tall and weigh around 70-80 kg,and we have traffic that's pretty average for European standards. We just don't have that "no replacement for displacement" mentality,and don't think that only worthless losers ride anything under 1000 cc,here it's perfectly normal for a beginner rider to start on an actual beginner bike.

Truth. Rode an s40 at the MSF course and boy was it better than other lower displacement cruisers.
I got one, and a 2019 HD Roadster. I ride the Suzi when I want to enjoy the ride, pleasantly cruising along at 70 mph becoming one with the thumping of the monocylinder; the Roadster is when I've done something bad and deserved to be punished.
I started on an S40 and sold it to my friend so he could start riding. They're pretty sprightly for a tiny thing, and they're light and low, perfect for anyone.
Also I accidently wheelied it at a light because I didn't realize I was still in 3rd when I stopped
I chose the 2021 Kawi Vulcan S. On my learners in Australia. Am 5ft 6, female, 51 years old and about 200 ibs. Found needed a bigger bike than Honda Rebel due to my weight. Loving the bike and loving learning.
Nice. I'm in a v similar boat. Just bought a kawi vulcan s 2016 as my first bike after getting my learners in aus. Practically same height at 5ft 7. I found the rebel a but cramped when I sat on it at store too. The vulcan was much more comfortable and felt fine when I went for a test ride. How are you finding it after 4 months of riding now?

@@robertleonard4995 Im 22 and got a v star just a few months ago as my first. I got the 650 custom, and love it. I think its perfect commuter, good sound, and sooooo comfy. My friend says its comfier than harleys. However, I do like power and wish it had a bit more to give. Maybe the 1100 wouldnt be so bas in my situation. But objectively, the 650 V star is such an amazing bike. Clutch is a bit funny at first though
@@mariogutierrez2965 I've had my 250 on the highway, I've pushed 80 mph, I've been on rt 1 from Massachusetts to Maine as well, at some point I'll up grade, but it's very comfortable.
As a Vulcan S 650 owner, I can’t see how you would say a M50 is better….you and yammie confuse me every time when you roast it when it out-performs all the other bikes on the list besides the rebel 1100

@@Hendoneesia straight line performance and turning are both things the 650 does better than most on this list. Also has better fuel economy. Also has lower cost to own as far as maintenance and reliability. These are factual statements that can be backed by 3rd party research. Nobody “shit all over” anyone or anything except you in a pathetic attempt to stir up an argument you think you can win. Nobody wins when riders fight one another. Thumbs down and scroll past. ✌🏼 also, I do own sport bikes as well. And dedicated cruisers. All are nice in their own regard.
My beginner motorcycle is an 07 V Star 1100 Classic.
Love it.
Started out on my Indian Chief bobber. I know it isn’t the recommended starter bike, and it’s very expensive (in Europe it’s 20K), but it has very controllable power and once you get a feel for the clutch in 1st and 2nd gear, I find it very forgiving. Also: it was my dreambike from the getgo and I will probably ride it for many years to come. Also I’m 6ft1, so a scout, rebel 500 and the like make me look like a normal guy on a pitbike.
What I don't like about this lists is that they always recommend new bikes for beginners. Let's be honest, if it's a first bike you're looking for to learn to ride a motorcycle, once you become more experienced you probably won't keep the bike and will want to upgrade to something better so it makes no sense on buying a brand new beginners bike in a dealership. My current bike which is my first bike is a 2003 Honda Shadow ACE 750 which I got for $2,600 and has less than 30k miles on it. I've had it for 1 year already and is my daily driver to work. Why spend $7k, 8k, 9k for a brand new bike that in 2 or 3 years you will most likely sell to upgrade for something better?
Most people will buy another bike, yes.
But if one actually is aware of the fact beforehand, one can make a very carefull and thought thru decision to buy the bike they just KNOW and FEEL deep down they will ride for years and keep for yrs if not tens of yrs.
Everything changes, things and situations passes day by day second by second but there are some things that just works better than others. Its all about finding this something as soon as possible to not feel like u lack something, be it a Motorcycle or something physical.
@@shuttzi9878 most kids first car is a used one. It's the same with motorcycles. If you're rich and want a new bike as your first bike, by all means. It's your money but most of us would have to get a loan for that and it is not smart to go into debt for a new beginners bike
@@jonathanmolina3529 Yeah it’s not a good idea to go into debt for a first motorcycle, but I’ve fallen in love with mine and I intend to keep it for around 5 years at least. Or until it gets too expensive to keep running.
Personally I see these bikes as good first new bikes, especially as I’m British so I’ve got a few years of cheap low CC beater bikes off Facebook marketplace before I can actually ride something I want to
That's why I spent $12k on an Indian Scout Bobber for my first bike. I'm not going to upgrade any time soon, if ever. I'm 44 and know exactly what I want, and it's not some bull$hit S40 or Vulcan S.
Stop trying to apply your own situation as a "one size fits all" to the rest of us.
My first was a 1200 Sportster. Really enjoyed it. I sold it 5 years ago and am trying to decide whether to buy something now. Haven't decided but I enjoy the videos.
Just bought a 2016 Bonneville yesterday and I have no clue how to ride a motorcycle. Gonna try to ride it around a parking lot today.

Yammie proper enjoyed it well enough. Perfect middle of the bell curve for cruisers, 7/10 for a beginner, 5/10 for an experienced rider.

well at 66 yrs. old, my first starter is the Rebel 500. it's quick first 4 gears, and the last 2 will get you flying down the road. it's only 416 lbs, anyone 5' to 6' can ride this bike. being new( i used to ride 40 years ago) on a 1200 or bigger twisting that throttle without experience can get you into trouble fast. i really wanted the Honda Fury, 1300 cc's, glad i i had not so good credit. i love my 500. it's perfect for new riders. that's my story, and i'am sticking to it!!
Fully agree, im 175cm (no idea how many ft) and this bike is perfect for my needs. As a beginner, 500cc is plenty to learn with and enjoy. If down the line i want something better thats fine, but this is a bike i dont ever really see selling.

I got my very first motorcycle at the beginning of august and i got a 2021 harley davidson iron 1200. Its been a great bike to learn on and just cruise
I know an 80 year old who cycled the country who loves his Suzuki S40 because he knows he has to live within his own limitations. That is the far end, far beyond beginner, far beyond the era of expert.
I started on an FZ-07.... now I'm on a Scout Bobber 20. I will always recommend the FZ/MT-07 as a starter bike. She was forgiving enough to let me make mistakes but never really left me looking for more.

I have an MT-07 and I think the clutch control is touchier on it than it is on any cruiser. If you can master the MT-07, moving to a cruiser feels like riding a recliner.

I've been riding a long time. The first bike I could ride on the street was a 1970 Yamaha 360 two stroke enduro. The bike I had the longest was a suzuki GS1100E. I loved my 700 Fazer and Z900RS. I'm still looking for my perfect bike. So many to choose from an so little time.
1:18 - I wouldn't own an S40, but it's a simple, inexpensive, reliable motorcycle that many riders have learned on. It has its place, and anyone looking for a simple, cheap, no-frills way to get on two wheels could do a lot worse than the S40.
I’ve been looking for an S40 for my partner to learn on after she does her course. It’s light, the ergonomics fit her tiny frame well, and she likes the style. Important to like the bike and feel comfortable as a new rider.
I’m 26 and my first bike about two months ago was a ‘95 Honda shadow vt1100c. It’s manageable and I was able to comfortably RIP THAT THING within two days and only previous dirtbike experience. Lots of dirtbike experience but still.
My first bike was a Honda VTX 1300C. I would not recommend it as a beginner bike, but I was 41 and very careful, so I made it work.

I just bought a 750 Honda Shadow aero as my first street bike and I'm only 5'11 and 140lb so its a pretty big bike for me and the only experience I have was riding dirt bikes about 10yrs ago and if I can learn on a cruise anybody can, all you have to do is take your time and respect the bike and it will come to you

s40 is the coziest little bike ever, you can drop it in the river and it won't squeak more than usual when you start it back up

The Vulcan S is the best bang for your buck. The bike is beautiful and rides smoothly. I have the 2021 Pearl White. Not sure why you think it's hideous looking. Everyone who's sees it asks about it and say how cool looking it is. Harleys are over done....blah

Of that bunch I like the Suzuki M-50. The price isn't that bad, it looks good (to me), and the reliability plus the fact that it's shaft drive would be what draw me to it. I have to admit I like the M-90 and M-109 as well.

I drive its predecessor Marauder VZ800. M50 / Intruder VZ800 is basically the same except fuel injected, shaft driven and some cosmetic changes. And yes, it is a good beginner bike for a mature person. Not very heavy for a cruiser and still the engine is surprisingly perky. I mean, it is no naked sports bike but 0-60 in bit over 5 seconds is nothing to scoff at to get some juices flowing in your veins during take offs.
Bought my first bike 6 months ago and it’s a 2014 sportster 883. Been a blast learning on it and I love the way it makes me feel!
Bought a 2017 Rebel 500 not even a week ago. I'm loving it so far.
There's no such thing as beginner bikes, there's only wrist responsibility.
I mean, you're not entirely wrong, but there's something to be said about bikes specifically designed to be more appropriate to beginners. Yes, anyone can theoretically start on anything with enough discipline, but not only will they learn more about riding, they will also do it at a much faster pace on a smaller bike, and usually with less money at stake as well.
I had a 1200custom sportster 100th anniv. Great bike. Then got daytona 765. Out grew both and got a custom 1650 wide glide.
Commented on ither vids about gettin another bike. Found a clean 11 R6 and got a great deal on it. Ride it home today!!!

I just traded up to a sportster s. But the bike I traded in I learned on for 5 years before I spent big boy money. I learned on a Vulcan s and I would highly recommend the abs version of it to anyone new to riding. The front end is so light and flickable while the rear stays planted. Leaning into a corner is a breeze on it. Takes a bit more effort from the sportster. Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend the Sportser S too. But only for someone who wants fz09/mt09/660rs speed. Which is what I was looking for.
I just picked up my first bike. 2018 Honda Rebel 300 ABS. the plan is to get really comfortable then work my way up!

The scout 60 looks amazing
The Scout 60 actually does have the 6th gear from the Scout. They basically just skipped 5th gear & kept the same high end gear for highway riding. The ratios are the same as 1-2-3-4-6 from the Big Scout.
Facts! My brother has this bike and it certainly performs on the top end.

I almost bought a Sixty but thanks to supply chain delays I got a full on Bobber. 5th is the gear for cruising 50-55mph. I'd be really, REALLY sad without it.
What does Spite think of Moto Guzzi, they refreshed the V7 with motor of the V9 . I own a '17 V9 bobber and love it.

Rebel 500 is perfect for small people. Low seat height with just enough power to get up to highway speed and light enough to handle at walk speeds.

The Triumph SS 900 has a 30" stock seat height. 65HP and weighs 454lbs dry. It can be lowered another 1.5-2" with rear shock replacement.
NO beginner, no matter man/woman/tall/short should get a bike any heavier IMO. They all stay up well cruising hwy speed but the real test is 20 or less mph. Tight turns, parking lots and idiots who park after you, in the way. For a beginner, weight is your enemy until you get some miles under your can.
The SS 900 is not my first street bike, it's my 6th, but I haven't ridden in 25 years. I've owned 2 Sportsters, liked them a lot but not for me anymore, I'm 68 and not interested in wrestling 100lbs more than my Street Scrambler. It's enough bike for my purpose and very fun. Lots of customization to do also. Love it.

My first motorcycle had 17hp (Honda Rebel knockoff) and felt like a lot to me at the time. For a broke college student it was perfect.

Spite, I bought 2 Kawa 650 vulcans for me and my wife. I drove 1900 miles in my minivan to pick them up. Then I towed them home. Almost 4k miles round trip. That was about two years ago. Got her on the two wheeled journey for the first time and got myself back on two wheels after 20 years because of the Vulcan 650 and then my wife sees your video raggin on the bike....Just saying.
The Vulcan S is awesome. Literally every nitpick he has on the bike is completely adjustable.
The second picture of the poison garden is Blarney castle in ireland. The one where you kiss the stone etc. I worked there for a time. I recognise the cages and the bench and the garden.
I love my Vulcan S, just slap on the performance pack and it’s 👌

I think the issue people have with the Suzuki S40, is that they don't understand it. It's a dirt-cheap bike, nearly unchanged since 1986, and is a blank slate. They make a great bike for absolute beginners to rip around on, they can do highway speeds easily, and they're bulletproof. I'd never recommend a mechanical novice get a carbed V-Twin, but a carbed single? yeah why not. Belt drive is great, there's a great aftermarket for the bikes, and the community support is fantastic. And with how light it is, if you drop it, you will have zero trouble picking it back up, and finding replacement parts is dirt easy.

Suzuki Intruder 1400, my first bike and fantastic!
First bike was/is a Honda vtx1800... Definitely the fastest thing I've been in/on in my life but after almost 4000 miles this year I can say it feels slow.
You guys should make a video about the speed wars and the bikes that were involved. Ex. Blackbird, busa 1st gen and 2nd gen, zx-11r,zx-12r, and zx-14r.

One of my favorite videos. My first bike was a Vulcan S and while it fit, I felt like it was very dorky and weird to ride. Now I have a Softail Slim and while the torque scared me a little at first, it is a tame pig and a great bike for someone with 3-6 months experience. Great Harley to learn on, I would be curious to see you guys do a review on one.

@@Hendoneesia I mean it isn’t a terrible bike and some colors were kind of cool depending on the year, you just will confuse a beginner rider who thinks cruisers are meant to rev out and have no torque in the lower power band, when in fact it is the opposite.
I've had a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 custom for over a year. Nice bike...except for the vibration around 68-70 mph. I asked the dealer and checkerboard owners on YT. YEP.. "Don't worry about it" was the answer.
As a Yamaha Bolt owner, I'm not sure why it's disliked so much. Sure it's a direct competitor to the 883 but in my opinion better in almost every way. The bike is still plenty of fun and has enough power to get out of its own way. I'd take it over the 950 any day.

Consider that a twin-motor, blown, stretched turbo Busa means you won't have to upgrade soon, plus is handy on days you leave late to work.

My first motorcycle was a 1996 Honda VT600C ( Shadow) it was enough bike to learn on for me, but after a while didn’t have enough torque and I got a 2009 Ninja 650R as my second motorcycle

lol i bought a Vulcan S, love it for my first bike. But tbh, already pining for something with a tad more personality. Handles wonderfully and she ain’t slow at all, but the cheapness in materials remind me more of a rental jet ski than my personal motorcycle. The sound does suck as well.
But for the price, I am over the moon ($4k 2k miles). I would say it doesn’t look amazing, but it got compliments all the time. Just like my first car, I will always have a bit of nostalgia for it.
But that’s the problem. I am feeling nostalgic and I STILL HAVE IT😅

New rider here at 56 years old, been riding a Yamaha vstar 650 and am now looking for something more as on the highway my vstar feels like she is working so hard. Ofcourse I am in love with the triumph rocket 3 tfc but all my research says it is not for beginners. What would you recommend? Thank you.

My twin sister had 1 years ago and she let ride it. It was a decent bike, I wasn't in love, but I also fail to understand the hatred that bike often gets.

I wonder if they will ever mention anything about the Yamaha Stratoliner 1900, amazing bike! First bike I ever sat on and am still riding it to this day! I even put 23,000 miles on it last year during the 'rona lockdowns.
Does anyone know which one would be good for a 13.5 mile commute each way, I usually work early morning so traffic is not much of a concern. I like the look of cruiser bikes in comparison to sport bikes and commuting with bike beats riding the train.
Yammie, let me help you out: S40, TU-250x, Eliminator 450, anything from Royal Enfield, nothing from Harley, Rebel 300 or 500. Vulcan S is the extreme upper limit. Under 700 cc engines is an easy guideline. Reasonably reliable (sorry, HD) and reasonably inexpensive repairs (sorry…um, Europe). Japanese and Indian (nation) pretty much own the new rider market.
