That one young man had it right. The primary issue in the Philippines is that corruption has almost become a part of their culture. It is not only a systemic issue, but also a moral one. The reason why Filipino politicians are corrupt is because the catamaran operator is also corrupt. The corruption permeates all of society. One thing he didn't quite address is that the Filipino people learned this from the Spanish colonists. It's also a big thing in Chinese culture, (bribes) both of which have had tremendous impact on the Filipino people.
Unfortunately, this won't end well for ordinary Filipinos. They are an industrious, hardworking people, but, as a people, there needs to be a paradigm shift in how society in the Philippines operates, not just their political systems.

Maybe change needs to start in the individual scale. Filipinos seem to think that the country's fate solely depends on the leaders in power, and expect them to turn things around by themselves. It seems enough people have no concept of self-improvement, let alone self-criticism, thinking that they can't be part of the problem too.
But that's just my opinion. I always hope for the better.

As I Filipino-Taiwanese, I found similarities between Taiwan and the Philippines in this election.
We're both young democracies that got true democracy within a few decades (Lee Teng-Hui in Taiwan, and EDSA in the Philippines), we're both under the shadow between the US and China, and we share a martial law period (except that Taiwan had a longer one).

As a Filipino who grew up abroad, I can see things that Filipinos who lived their entire lives in the Phillippines can't see. The entertainment industry and politics are entertwined. There's no boundaries celebrities think they know best and they think they know enough to work in politics. But honestly the reason why they're getting into politics is because they LOVE fame and money. They don't love to genuinely help people. They ingeniounly help because they love the attention they get. The people who vote for them are fanatics its really like a cult. This goes the same for the beauty pageant industry, but thats another topic for another time. *And this is just my opinion only I'm not saying I'm right by no means.*

Things need to be better and that young man in the video is correct, more needs to be invested in education. That way in future elections the Filipinos are well educated to see through the BS and vote wisely through what they can calculate is in the country’s best interest.

They spoke of battling corruption and the issue of Philippine sovereignty, particularly of the West Philippine Sea, then claims that the current administration is doing a great job. There's a huge disconnect. Truth is, the current administration is one of the most corrupt in PH history, not to mention that some of them were done at the expense of a proper pandemic response. The current president has done nothing to protect the sovereignty of the PH. In fact, he did the opposite--he has shown favor to the Chinese government A LOT MORE THAN the Filipino people. In 1986, the authoritarian dictatorship was replaced by liberal democratic republic.
However, the new liberal government was inefficient, ineffective and elitist.

This drove the people to a point of desperation to vote for authoritarian brutes.

This is wrong! You don't understand the situation at that time. You can't expect magic after the peaceful revolution. You need to understand that there's a need for transition and it was not easy.
The Philippines at that time is under heavy debt from the World Bank due to the previous administration's corruption. There was a moratorium from the WB to pay and restructure debts. How can the Aquino government at that time be able to develop the country and pay obligations when there was no money? You need to sell some of the government assets that are difficult to maintain and you need to borrow again from the World Bank to continue to fund the basic services for the people and pay the government's obligations.
Unfortunately, borrowing again from WB could mean more conditions. In short, at that time the country is under a "debt trap" brought by the previous administration of Ferdi Marcos. Also, the regime of Cory Aquino suffered two coup attempts that made the country unattractive to foreign investors.
It was only during the time of Ramos that the economy stabilized and slowly improve. The Philippines was then called the "Tiger Cub of Asia". Unfortunately, that did not sustain as well when it was hit by Global Financial Crisis. Not only the Philippines suffer but many Asian countries as well.
Then, it was followed by the regime of Gloria Arroyo which is more colorful and controversial. GMA's party is PDP-Laban which is also the party of President Duterte. Now, why do you blame those leaders when they're not all coming from the same party?

@@xiuxoio Well, if you think that BBM is the right guy for you, then, it is up to your conscience. No politician is perfect anyway. But, let me try to correct some things.
The goal of Edsa is not to give a good life to all Filipino people. That's impossible! A good life is a result of your hard work and sometimes, luck. Not that someone is going to give that to you. The goal of Edsa is to topple the dictatorship and bring back democracy to the people without external restraint or threat.
The second goal is to lessen the effect of inflation which is brought by corruption, high foreign debt, and economic instability. The famous slogan of Cory Aquino at that time during her campaign was, "Mahal na presyo ng galunggong", "Tama na, sobra na!". In her slogan, you can sense that she wants to save the poor from bearing all the hardships brought by the high inflation. "Galunggong" or "blue mackerel scud" at that time was the only cheap fish that can be afforded by the poor. So, she never promised about good life but hoped for everyone to have a better country and tomorrow.
A good life for everyone is every individual's dream and this can only be achieved when the country and the people work together for the common good and to make a difference. Unfortunately, this may probably not happen anymore, for a lot of Filipinos nowadays become more fanatics of iconic people and idols rather than loving the country. I just hope that the President you voted for could make a dramatic change in your country.

It's your ordinary Filipino that is the most corrupt. They willingly sell their votes every election and then complain that they stay poor because of corruption. They rationalize their wrong doings all the time. So this is a vicious cycle that will be hard to break and the Philippines will continue to be the poor man of Asia.

Its because after EDSA revolution there was no change. We were promised of a better future, yet we were disappointed. Terrorists, drugs, rebels were so rampant after 1986.. tragedies were not properly responded especially during typhoon Haiyan. It was during President Duterte's time where we can freely go outside at night without having fears of being attacked by drug addicts or communist rebels in the countryside. We have freedom of information, but sometimes some mainstream media focused more on negative documentaries about the Philippines rather than the good side of the country. That is why foreigners mostly heard about our country as poor, dirty, chaos when in fact there is more good things to see here in the Philippines. Now, most of our provinces are almost free from communist rebels unlike before. So people nowadays don't easily believed the mainstream media, because they can also be a source of disinformation especially if they are against the leader/politician. Now I can see progress here in our province, with more employment opportunities rather than going to manila, it's because of increase in investors who are not anymore afraid of communist rebels being harrased just to pay revolutionary tax.

We're already reaping the rewards from this, poverty rate went down from 26% in 2015, to 21% in 2018, FDI Net Inflows peaked in 2017 and 2021, our semiconductor manufacturing industry has been growing 10% year-on-year since 2017, there are ADB and IMF trajectories that we could surpass other country's economies, like Thailand, if we keep this momentum. That's why we need to sustain legislative momentum on reforms, and the Liberal Party and Leni won't be the harbinger to it, because they're center-left and only focused on subsidies, than actual systematic reforms, it would be the Libertarian Right of PH Politics, such as PDP-Laban and figures like Duterte.

There are some people who are smart enough to accept both money and vote the candidate they truly want, but there are some people (I PERSONALLY know those people) who will vote for the candidate that gave them the bigger money.
Remember, a candidate for a Congressman may need more than 100k votes in a big city to win, but a candidate running in a province may only need ~50k votes or less to win. That's why the candidates from small provinces can afford those outrageous amounts of money to buy a vote.

They are looking into the past, feeling nostalgic but can you really blame them? More than 30 years after the fall of Ferdinand Marcos, the many successive goverments have failed to improve their living. their biggest "commodity" is still workers, barely improvement on infrastructure, and pagpag is still a thing.

To an extent, I agree. But it falls apart when the government itself will make you an outlaw and punish you for taking the initiative when they fail. And the politicians here do it a lot, I’ve seen volunteers go missing just because they weren’t voting for someone else and a mayor try to cut the power of a rally that threatened to do his job better. Filipinos are industrious, but it means nothing when they are punished for trying to succeed at all.

Most are voting for Bongbong Marcos and Leni Robredo (these is what one of the interviewee meant when he/she said the media only focused on 2 presidential candidates). Isko Moreno, Ping Lacson, and Manny Pacquiao are also among those who have significant number of voters for the presidential race. Sara Duterte will probably have a landslide victory for vice presidency with Vic Sotto and Kiko Pangilinan as distant 2nd and 3rd placers.
