The reason there's only one Ice Climber in Target Test is because the original Ice Climber on NES had you play as only one of the climbers, Nana was player 2.
Ah yes the classic 'old nintendo reference' move.
Ice Climber is one of the more underrated NES games
@@DueNorthGaming The jumping is incredibly stiff in *_Ice Climber_* as the climbers have barely any horizontal movement with their jumps. The game's control really shows its age with how stiff and janky it is.
@@DueNorthGaming I beg to differ, the game has aged horribly compared to other black box games of the same or similar genre like Balloon Fight, Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Jr, etc.
I'd personally put Ice Climbers in the same camp as Mario Bros, still playable but not really enjoyable.
Man, I'm so used to the Ice Climbers in Super Smash Bros that I totally forgot that they don't actually go together by default in Ice Climber. It's weird thinking that it's only Popo when you're on your own, and Nana moves completely independently because she's controlled by another player.
The weird characters are definitely the more interesting to watch. Definitely hoping for Giga Bowser and the Wire Frame Fighters.
You can’t forget master hand, Crazy hand & Metal Mario bros.
There is a Giga Bowser vid for reference in the meantime. Three stages messes up Giga Bowser, only one of those can be barely completed.
@@5h3i1ah_and_Nik0 The heavier gravity would make it more interesting. I think if he's interested he could
Don’t forget the Sandbag
Damn, Young Link was literally everything or nothing !
Kind of makes him one of the best fighters in melee for that, he can stay near the ledge and not feel too pressured about coming back up with his masterful up b
not true, Ness got like 3 of the above targets with PK Thunder
All because of that chosen spawn point.
something to point out is that the climbers actually can switch based on their alt; in melee, the red and orange alts actually have you playing as Nana with Popo as the AI partner (in Brawl and Ultimate, i believe every second skin has you be Nana). For this reason I tend to refer to the ai climber as just that, "ai climber," since I usually play as Nana when using Icies and referring to my AI climber as "popo" would prolly just confuse people
very precise
It in melee too.
Most people refer to the AI partner as Nana. Rolls off the tongue much easier and people know what you're talking about (not to mention that's how it is internally)
i just refer to the second IC by their name, which is Popo since the red and white-ish blue alt is my go to when playing them
Ultimate's costumes actually have 5-8 as Nana playable
damn i knew jigglypuff was hard, but 21 targets? there aren't even that many!
jk
I accidentally zoomed through (hit the 8 key) and saw 21 targets. I thought "Oh, he used both single and double ice climbers and missed all of them. Wait, that's still just 20."
He unbroke the targets.
pokepress and created some
I can't believe Ice Climbers missed 21 targets in jigglypuff's stage
I'm sure SimpleFlips could route out at least 15 of them. The man got 11 stars in Whomp's Fortress during ESA's CoronaRelief Mario 64 Crowd Control segment.
No one else is going to do it?
*sigh*
YoU spAsTiC, iT wAS tWo tARgEts wIth sOlo aND OnE WItH dUO!!?,@$#^@&×;^■
whooooosh away my friends
2 targets missed for popo and 1 target missed for ice climbers not 21

Fox's should be possible with damage boosting.
No, its not possible even whit damage bost, because the electric things have a platform above, so he will be bouncing between the electric square and the platform
@@Brothe1383Oficial I'm not talking about vertical boost but diagonal ones at the corner.
Based on the layout, going straight into the target area seems difficult, if not impossible. However, if you could damage boost past the platform and get on top, you’d be able to make it.
EDIT: I heavily overestimated the power of knock back.I can only try it with Fox, and at 300% I don’t think I can even pass the second shock platform. I’m not knowledgeable of how Melee works to the degree where I can understand mechanics like that.
What about damage boosting off the bottom hazard?
@@littlebadassgaming It's not possible, unfortunately. Even at 999%, the knockback off the hazards doesn't scale to a point that you can even come close to the upper target.
I wonder how badly you'd have to nerf a character for them to be unable to beat Mr. Game and Watch's stage
play as sandbag
Little Mac with no Up B
Kain Tugwell-Fisher but ariels, it would be little Mac stuck the ground
Rankings now:
1. Peach (beats all stages)
2-5. Mario, Captain Falcon, Fox, Ice Climbers (1 stage, 1 target)
6. Ness (1 stage, 6 targets)
7. Luigi (1 stage, 9 targets)
8. Yoshi (2 stages, 10 targets)
9. Bowser (3 stages, 12 targets)
10. DK (5 stages, 13 targets)
That's Planet JFT's job! Not yours!
I feel it's worth listing Ice Climbers based on one or both: together at the top and just one at the bottom with a nasty 15 over 5 stages.
Like
11. Ice Climber (5 stages, 15 targets)
If you want, when referring to Popo alone, go with the word Sopo, which is what the entire competitive Melee community uses to describe a Popo with a missing Nana
Solo + Popo = Sopo
The Virgin Ice Climber Vs. The Chad Ice Climbers.
Thats probably the fastest ive seen the intro go! Thus music runs by fast
It would be great to get a complete update video after the 10-hour supercut, so we don't have to watch the full thing to get the updates
Good point.
Ok so i have only just realised that in Luigi's Target Test the platform is a GameCube. After 18 years of playing the game i have only just noticed
lmao really?!?! I noticed it first time I did it
This is just satisfying to watch. Nintendo should of just let us do this from the beginning.
Damn. Ice Climbers is so bad he missed 21 Targets on Jigglypuffs stage 😔
Is there a way the 20XX modders could port the SSB64's Break the Targets (or even crazier, the board the platforms mode) maps? Then you could do a series on how melee characters are doing on these stages.
I feel like the ICs could totally do Puff's stage (with Nana ofc) using some desync jank. maybe make Nana side-b target 9, then use Popo to cancel freefall using Up-B? and then use that Up-B to kamikaze the last target?
idk just throwing out ideas.
This really neat thank you for approaching it this way. I actually forget all the time how you only have one of them during their target test.
I must admit, when I was little, I thought Popo was alone on Break the targets because we once lost Nana on stage. I though that for years, and always wondered how it would be with Nana.
Did you try blizzard @ jiggs 10th target ? Double blizzard into side b recover?
from the left side - blizzard is their biggest hitbox
I was thinking the same thing, Jigglypuff should be possible if you can recover after it.
Maybe a slide off blizzard? You could probably desync and drag nana off the edge with a wave dash and then up b deep to save her
The difference between Popo (alone) and Nana & Popo in Young Link stage is like night and day
Good vide. I’ve been watching this series you have going on and I really like it. Keep up the good work
Results so far
8- Popo whit 15 targets missed
7- Dk whit 13 targets missed
6- Bowser whit 12 targets missed
5- Yoshi whit 10 targets missed
4- Luigi whit 9 targets missed
3- Ness whit 6 targets missed
2- Mario, C.Falcon, Fox and Ice Climbers whit 1 target missed
1- Peach is the only one who was able to break all the targets
It's amazing how little reach the Ice Climbers have in their hitboxes despite wielding giant mallets.
Eh, I don’t think it’s that weird honestly. Think about it, we always talk about how unique Ice Climbers break the target stage is compared to the others. Even the music is Icicle Mountain. They want you to feel like you’re actually playing Ice Climber for their break the targets stage. Also, yes, I would agree another reason is because it would have been way too easy with both of them. I think the correct way to do the series would be with both of them, but I think the fact that you tried them all as just Popo and only included Nana when Popo couldn’t do it by himself, was not only more in-depth, but a more enjoyable way to do this episode
Wow, Ice Climbers is by far the worst. I can't believe they missed 21 targets on Jigglypuff's stage alone.
Did not expect Y. Link's stage to be doable as anyone without a walljump.
I'm thinking Link and Mewtwo, despite having no wall jump, will be able to do young links stage.
Peach doesn’t have a wall jump and she did Young Link’s stage
Idk if someone said this already but you can change the music of target test depending of the stage you are in with certain input i think it was with the z button
You should do a speed comparison between the Ice Climbers stage with just one Ice Climber, and the Ice Climbers stage with both.
I wonder how all the 64 and Melee Break the Targets (and Board the Platforms) stages would play with Brawl’s character roster.
Also, I think one of the big issues with Melee’s version of Break the Targets is just how precise the hitboxes are compared to 64.
You never played Ice Climber (the Famicom game). It would explain everything about the break the targets stage. Basically, it's a recreation of the game.
I believe the reason is because the stage is based off the NES game where you only play as one character as well unless in two player.
Sopo can do Fox's stage with damage boosting, and the two climbers can definitely do puffs with damage boosting. Unsure about sopo on puffs stage though.
Theory: You could probably use the hazards in Fox's to get Popo up to that last target.
Yoshi's is probably possible with frame perfect side b tapping.
Edit: I'm also thinking blizzard might have a chance through the left side wall on jiggs.
Blizzard can't go through walls and I did a quick TAS with frame perfect taps and it didn't make much of a difference.
@@Snooplax thanks. Tapping makes a bigger difference with two climbers. Has been a while since I played melee.
This is somewhat of a nitpick, but you CAN play as Nana if you pick a color where she's the leader.
Yes, I'm pretty sure that is the case.
16:05)
My mans just wavedashed
Not sure if you already tried this but, you might be able to get the last target on Jigglypuff 's with their down special.
Though, I'm not sure if the move would be blocked by the wall or not.
You might be able to solo beat Foxes stage if you damage-boost off the bottom-middle hazard.
Ice climbers get a lot less height with their side b when they're separated too
In Fox stage you can hurt yourself with the lava block and make the same thing that you do in Falco stage
I'm pretty sure you can get the last yoshi target with a rising side b if you mash hard enough.
Mario’s score: 252/253
Luigi’s score: 244/253
Bowser’s score: 241/253
Peach’s score: 253/253
Yoshi’s score: 243/253
Donkey Kong’s score: 240/253
Captain Falcon’s score: 252/253
Fox’s score: 252/253
Ness’s score: 247/253
SoPo’s/SoNa’s score: 238/253
Ice Climbers’s score: 252/253
I got 253 cuz I’m counting the unused shiek stage which not only can everyone do due to being super simple but also only has 3 targets that’s how early it was cut from the game
Wow Popo immediately ditched Nana when he got when he needed in Zelda’s…
Wow 21 missed targets on puffs stage I can’t believe that
Good challenge! Thanks for uploading!
Try damage boosting in fox’s stage
Dang, I thought Ice Climbers blizzard would hit the final target in Jigglypuff 's stage, but guess not.
Thought, could you potentially damage boost up to the last target in Fox's stage?
11:17 You can see the disappointment in his eyes after not making that.
Could you not use the lava(?) blocks in Fox's stage to boost yourself up to the top with enough Knockback? If so, that would fix it so that most everyone could do Fox.
Is it possible to beat Fox's stage with just Popo if you use the burners to your advantage like you do on Falco's stage? It may have just crossed your mind because no other character has needed to do that, but maybe there's some complication I'm not seeing.
Can you damage boost with Sopo in Fox's stage to get to the top (the square lava cube in the bottom left of the group)? Or is there a limit to the height it gives after a while? Also they made it just popo in their stage because that's how their game was, they were emulating the single player map of 'Iceclimber'.
Ice Clibers are so bad they are able to miss 21 targets in a 10-target stage
Ice climbers down b couldve got that jigglypuff target
We don't need to see you doing the same stage twice in its entirety. When forced to use both Ice Climbers, you should have edited the video so that we only see you get the targets you couldn't get as a single Ice Climber.
Dang 21 on Jigglypuff? Below even bottom tier smh)
Did you try getting hit on those bumbers on Fox´s stage as solo Climber? I can imagine getting a lot of %s and a little TAS might do it?
Yes I tried that and how much damage you have doesn't effect how far you get launched so the bumpers did not help on that course
You can probably damage boost in fox’s stage and get it with so-po
16:04 HE WAVEDASHED!!!!!!!
1 Ice Climber vs. Kirby Target Stage.
Is this why Kirby's Target stage got nerfed.
1st, & Do Kirby Next, Pls Kirby Is The One True OG Thicc Boi
Wait Kirble
perhaps you can use tas if you cant do one
IC had big nerf in Ultimate.
Wait how did you miss 21 targets on Jigglypuff's stage?
14:55 Hmmm, Down Special didn't work on there either?
Down special won't go through walls I tried that
hell yeah snooplax time
Popo can do Zelda's stage and get the first target on Y. Link's stage: ua-cam.com/video/EoHRDk4-prs/v-deo.html
They only let you go SoPo in Break the Targets? Wack.
What’s the ranking? ( thank you in advance)
Blizzard didn't work for Puff T10?
It'd still be 1 target left.
Let's see what Kirby can do
Pretty sure he'll get every target besides Young Link and maybe one target from the Puff. Keyword being maybe.
Cool
Oh god I said just popo as a joke
Cool content, it's just way too long. Should consider either optimizing target breaks or skipping any part that's not challenging
YL rip

Nope

CURRENT CHARACTER RANKING
1st: Peach - Perfect
2nd: Mario, Captain Falcon, Fox, Ice Climbers - 1 Stage, 1 Target Missed
6th: Ness - 1 Stage, 6 Targets Missed
7th: Luigi - 1 Stage, 9 Targets Missed
8th: Yoshi - 2 Stages, 10 Targets Missed
9th: Bowser - 3 Stages, 12 Targets Missed
Last: Donkey Kong - 5 Stages, 13 Targets Missed
Sigh... so close...
Oh, well... I'm at least glad they got so far! That just goes to show the power of teamwork!
(Though, I *am* wondering if you tried their Down-B...)
You’re missing Sopo bro
you should probably separate the Popo and Duo runs since they are kinda drastically different
Planet JFT down b freezes opponents, no height given
@@coleminer8847
I was thinking maybe they could Down-B through the wall where that one target was.
